8mm (italy) #8mm 024 ep

pumiceprovidence” seven inch single record

  • awful and awesome (3:05)
  • fifteen inch guage railway (1:35)

  • we piss on their stuff (2:25)
  • wholehoof (2:25)
astoundingly great single by stefan “pumice” neville, recorded during his residency @ as220 in providence ... the kind of mumble-vectors that stefan has been pioneering for the last few years are, in my mind, right up there with those of sterling motherfucking smith ... certainly in the sheer range of neville’s private universe / bedroom trajectories ... add to this hacked consumer electronics and casual destruction of musical logic; there’s nothing about this that i don’t like ...

highly recommended, even if it’s a bit expensive for a 7” (an italian one, at that ...)

8mm 024: pumice 'providence' 7" vynil ep

new zealand based stefan neville is pumice. my first contact with his music was 'pumiceraft' (last visible dog, 2004), one of the best record of the last 10 years if you ask me. this new single ep, contains  4 songs recorded in us in 2006, during his residence at as 220, providence, ri. and it's supposed to be the new pumice classic!

tracks sound like the usual beautiful mix of fragile psyche-pop songs +  near droning rock, all mixed in a lo-fi punk style! comes in a classical snobbish cover printed by ilcanedicoda, with drawings by s.neville himself. 250 copies that are supposed to not stay here forever.

finally in stock !!! the cd version of the recent tipped bowler tapes lp, about which i had to say ::

that gauzy “pumice effect(caused by running the guitar signal [and possibly everything else] through a pair of baby monitors) is here in droves ; the songs are penultimately ramshackle in the now-familiar style (well, familiar to me ; i’ve spent the last year trying to track down everything i could by mr. neville) ...

there’s no denying that this music is 10 kinds of brilliant ; stefan’s just as likely to drop a ney-flute solo in the middle of a garage-rock stomper as ride a single chord into oblivion ...

pumice quo · sab 029

as the title self-effacingly implies, quo proffers a triumphant, primo slice of past pumiceisms: uncertain progressions, anomalous structure, inimitable guitar buzz, sublime melancholy, and distorted vocals (crooned, spoken & moaned). quo once more finds pumice cruising the convergence of pop, folk and noise strains with bona fide inner mystique. sputtering sub-underground skiffle aims for outer zones, diamond cuts of nervous guitar with pesky hooks that sting and tickle tread rough hewn punk turf, pop tangents charm with echoes of kilgour or knox, and woozy synth blurts & drones thread the patchwork patterns with hulk-like grace. with quo, neville's palette has shifted to include traces of useless hardcore, doo wop, and modern loner/lunar blues.

stefan neville, shamblin' on unhinged like a modern day hasil adkins, has been making music as pumice now for most of his life. through a steadily spewed stream of unique diy thud & ooze, mostly created on his insular own, neville has burrowed an incomparable place in the post-everything new zealand landscape, all the while making music that's his.

sab 022 pumice pebbles

island living affords absolute polarities in both geography and the psyche - tranquility & isolation. this duality is present in the music of pumice - the eccentric, flummoxing and oft-gloomy one-man band helmed by stefan geoffrey neville, a resident of the cultural hamlet of auckland, new zealand.

though pumice’s skewed take on experimental folk and pop songwriting is firmly rooted in the outsider vibes of downunder stalwarts like pip proud and alastair galbraith, the fruits of his labor are singular in scope as neville weaves his own personal mythology mired with comedy, melancholy, humility and tragedy and delivered with vivid clarity. pumice’s pesky brand of loner kiwi diy - precariously devoid of fatuous pose - is a colorful, desolate soundworld unto itself.

on pebbles, the umpteenth pumice full-length outing, stefan neville excavates the mutant rock of simply saucer & the idiosyncratic, rhythmic compositions of moondog (at his most playfully abstract), and re-contextualizes those touchstones via the pages of a mid-70s incredible hulk comic book.

pebbles offers the unlikely marriage of astute refinement and wild abandon, with songs uplifting & sincere, yet dark, with oddball substance to spare. featuring some of pumice's best makeshift pop songs to date, pebbles even manages a few excellently fractured instrumentals that harkens to david kilgour or the clean.

new (summer 2006) album from stefan... his familiar-yet-alien array of broken baby monitors & toy-guitar/drum-kit being just about the best thing ever; in terms of damaged lo-fi songsmithing...
soft abuse press release...
with songs nestled halfway between xpressway's searing static and flying nun's dark jangle, pumice's stefan neville has quietly created a unique brand of fractured pop since 1991. despite (or because of) his activity in new zealand's cassette underground for the past 15 years, neville has only recently begun to crawl into the consciousness of outsider music fans.

yeahnahvienna was conceived and recorded during an artist residency in vienna in 2004. neville's precariously arranged arsenal of cassettes, chord organ, vocals, drums and guitar has yielded a fragile and fractured masterwork. a stark and melancholic affair, calling to mind alastair galbraith, sun city girls and supreme dicks. through neville's layers of hiss and murk lie beautifully stirring & shambolic downer hymns.

need for a crossing: a new new zealand vol. i

trapped in splendid isolation on the verdant backside of the planet, the new zealand scene has evolved into as vivid and unique a beast as any you're likely to hear. thanks to recent expeditions, you can now enjoy its multifarious tweets and warbles for yourself, as the intrepid folks at xeric present need for a crossing: a new new zealand, an introduction to the latest generation of antipodal soundsmiths.

birchville cat motel takes the lead with an epic blast in the cale/conrad/sabbath vein, while the gentler ruminations of stefan neville illuminate both pumice and blowfly saint. brief appearances by leighton craig and gfrenzy are, in turn, reverential and shambolic. while making nods to both greek rembetika and raw americana, greg malcolm is the model of multi-dexterity, playing three guitars simultaneously (he uses his feet). antony milton lends a gritty and aggressive bit of soundscaping, which segues into the collection's soaring, cloud-busting finale by the outstanding peter wright.

it's a strange and exotic menagerie, and a welcome chance for the rest of us to hear what's happening in the new new zealand. exquisitely packaged with a 24-page book monographing the new zealand streets and roads of yesteryear.
