dacm - stéréotypie

asp 2027
release date: january 1, 2004

dacm is a collaboration between the musician peter rehberg (pita), and the singer tujiko noriko, whose songs bring softness and melody, and punctuate stéréotypie with moments of solace. stéréotypie is a choreographic and theatrical proposal which presents a world where setting and human bodies can belong to the same visual intention. this is a place where fiction permeates reality through the fantasy of perfection; where the friction between perfection and imperfection seems more attractive than ever.

as the body, seen as a draft, is made to strive towards perfection - the perfection of a dreamed body. this ideal, as a conglomeration of homemade fantasies, seems to unveil the limitations and the obsolescence of making a fantasy of physical and mechanical perfection come true, and also uncovers all the excitement attached to this fantasy, by fulfilling obsessions about norms and evenness together with a certain imperfection.

november 2008 release ; a collection of peter “pita” rehberg’s solo (read: not-ktl) work for gisèle vienne & dennis cooper’s recent productions ... far more gestural & reserved than anything i’ve heard from him thusfar, with genuine snatches of musique concrète (listen to the sound-sample) lining the driving, pulse-oriented harsh-noise he’s more known for ...

peter rehberg: work for gv 2004-2008 cd
release date: 31.10.2008
total time: 54:36

all audio made by peter rehberg 2004-2008. for the following gisèle vienne productions:

'i apologize' (2004)
'une belle enfant blonde' (2005)
'jerk' (2008)

text written and spoken by dennis cooperaction on ‘murder version’ by catherine robbe-grillet & jonathan capdevielle
mastered at piethopraxis, köln, june 2008
artwork by soma
photos by gisèle vienne

peter rehberg’s collaboration with the paris based puppeteer and choreographer, gisèle vienne began in 2001, with the production of the dacm piece ‘showroomdummies’, followed by ‘stereotypie’ in 2003.

in 2004, vienne started to direct under her own name and began to work on pieces collaborating on text with us author, dennis cooper. this cd is a document of selected audio parts of all gisèle vienne productions made between 2004 and 2008, except for the epic ‘kindertotenlieder’, whose audio material was presented on the various ktl releases in 2006 and 2007 (emego 084, emego 085).

the range here is vast from the upfront noise excess of the ‘i apologize(2004) tracks to the lonely synth passages which were used in ‘une belle enfant blonde(2005), and the sad coda used for ‘jerk’, which began as a radio play for radio france culture in 2007, before being adapted for stage in 2008.

the opening ‘murder version’ is a version of the recording ‘meurtre’ by catherine robbe-grillet & jonathan capdevielle, which was released as a single sided 12” vinyl in 2005 (ubeb 001), and is to be considered as a tribute to the alain robbe-grillet film ‘glissements progressifs du plaisir(1974).

although this material was intended for consumption in a theatrical setting, it has been edited with domestic use in mind ultimately representing that the grey zone where puppetry, literature, contemporary theatre & dance, visual art, and extreme computer music meet.

devastatingly beautiful four part follow up to the acclaimed debut cd recorded in a former abattoir in angers, as well as a 16th century manor in the extreme west of france.taking the blueprint that was laid out on the first record even further, with the ecstatic build up of ‘theme’, the near psychedelic ‘abattoir’, and closing with the twisted romanticism of the closing ‘snow 2’. an upgrade both artistically and emotionaly.

as with the first cd elements appeared in the finished version of the theatre piece ‘kindertotenlieder’ by gisele vienne and dennis cooper, which was premiered in brest, france, march 2007.

a six part collision amongst the increasingly fading prescences between the light and the dark. this work came about as the two were composing sound and music for a piece by gisèle vienne and dennis cooper, entitled 'kindertotenlieder'. it must be stated that this cd is not the soundtrack to said piece, but a separate project. however, elements may appear in the finished piece which is to be premiered in brest, france, march 2007.

pieces were recorded in a resistance fortress in southern france during a thunderstorm. others in a wintergarden drenched in the sunlight.

may 2008 reissue of pita’s second & (imho) best album ; gloriously remastered by marcus schmickler during the summer of 2007 to reveal even further layers of detail / grit. housed in a digipak replicating the original tina frank spec, booklet w/ new liners by david keenan. if any one album stands out above the miasma of late 90s/early 00s digital-noise scrape, it’s this one ... highly recommended, especially if you’ve never given it due course ...

brilliant late 90s harsh digital collage from peter “pita” rehberg; in my mind the finest thing he’s done...

a huge wall of surging, backwards chord changes (plundered from god-knows-where...) run through every fuzz / distortion / overdrive pedal / plugin simultaneously. unlike much disassociative “laptop” music, this has a palpable emotional heft to it... excellent stuff.

liner notes by david keenan

get out’ was the second full length album release by pita (aka peter rehberg). the folllow up to the award winning ‘seven tons for free’. its harsh use of available computing devices made it popular both in and outside electronic music circles of the time, especially the 11 minute anthem like 3rd track.

david keenan in his liner notes states that ‘get out’ “...stands as the first major musical laptop statement in the same way that jimi hendrix’s are you experienced album spoke for the most extended instrument-specific modes of the electric guitar three decades earlier.

out of print for over half a decade, now remastered and packaged in a 6 panel digipack. half the original edition was printed in red, the other in blue. this definitive edition comes in purple. extra content comes in the form of the 3 tracks which appeared on the the split 12” with kevin drumm released by boxmedia in 2000.

neither z’ev or pita need any introduction in these circles. these 2 heavyweights of experimental music have been associates for 2 decades. their creative collaboration came about after a meeting in 2004, which led to a monthly file exchange program in 2005.

instead of releasing results immediately it was decided to test the material in a live setting. performances were held in vienna and throughout the uk during 2006. ‘colchester’ is the final result of this process. a mesmerising and intense collision of z’ev’s acoustic percussion work and pita’s computer manipulation.

october 2007 release; a coruscating, corrosive (alliteration is fun...) collaborative work jointly composed/executed by marcus schmickler and peter “pita” rehberg.

it’s not all brimstone / hellfire throughout; the second piece devolves into subdued spectral smear after smacking us around for a bit with its fully-rectified stammer (which reminds of recent whitehouse more than anythings else...) ; other spots introduce jittery, off-axis grains that echo florian hecker’s recent work with wave geometry... but yes, for the most part this is the kind of ddd infighting that the two are known for in improvisational contexts (think marcus’ role in his duo w/thom lehn, peter in ktl...)

regardless of their modes of employ, these two are master frequency-range craftsman; both are in peak form throughout. highly recommended.

peter rehberg: computer
marcus schmickler: digital synthesizer, computer

peter rehberg (pita) and marcus schmickler have been two of the leaders in the electronic revolution of the last fifteen years, both on their own and in collaboration with others. one (snow mud rain) is the first duo cd from these two long-time friends and associates.

rehberg co-founded the massively influential mego label in 1994, and soon after began recording under the name pita. his first solo release, seven tons for free, came out in 1996 and was a kick in the teeth to all those who heard it, melding noise with techno in a blend the wire called ‘wilfully difficult’, a crucial formative statement for the then nascent eai world. since then, he’s continued in his ever-difficult path, both as a solo artist (get out, get down), and in groups such as ktl, rehberg & bauer, mimeo, and fenn’o’berg. recently, he’s been primarily focused on working with dance and performance pieces, with dacm, ktl and on his own, and now runs the editions mego label by himself.

schmickler has been involved with numerous projects over the past decade, including the seminal collective kontakta. while rooted in electronic music, schmickler also has a background in contemporary composition, having studied under prominent stockhausen collaborator johannes fritsch. as a solo artist, schmickler has created important works such as wabi sabi, sator rotas and param, as well as five cds under the name pluramon, including the just-released the monstrous surplus. he also has some long-standing electroacoustic collaborative projects, most notably with synth whiz thomas lehn, both in duo and in trio with keith rowe, and a gorgeous duo with pianist john tilbury, as documented on 2005’s variety. schmickler’s new solo release altars of science will be released later this month on the rehberg-run editions mego label.

rehberg and schmickler met up in march 2007, in schmickler’s piethopraxis studio in cologne, for two days of recordings. despite having barely worked together as a duo previously, the results were so successful that after two days, the record was basically completed. this is obvious when listening to the finished product, as a rawness and energy that hearkens back to the explosive power of early mego bursts from the speakers, further enhanced by the remarkable density and clarity of the recording.

this is the fourth solo album from groundbreaking sound artist pita (real name peter rehberg). his previous solo albums as pita (all on the mego label) have all been landmarks in electronic music. his sound ranges from furious to minimalistic, but always with the same uncompromising attitude. to be true to ones ideas when trends come and go is something admirable in every artist. “get off” is his most varied album to date.

“get off” was made over a two-year period, with most of the material originating from various 'live' situations. it was then compiled and completed during the summer of 2004 in relative isolation.

apart from his solo work, he also collaborates with choreographers gisele vienne (dacm) and chris haring, as well as being a member of the mimeo project.

the fourteenth installment in this series is a mini cd by peter rehberg. for his rework, rehberg used the recordings of the very first kapotte muziek workshop (and concert) held in september 1997, as part of staalplaat's 'masterclass' event at the korzo theatre, in den haag. rehberg moved away from the digital computer noise recently and for this work crafted together a beautiful soft but outspoken piece of music. the piece lasts 17:30.

if the sounds emanating from this disc seem alien, do not be alarmed. fremdkoerper, or "alienated bodies", is culled from a series of compositions peter rehberg constructed in collaboration with choreographer chris haring for a soundtrack to a live dance performance. you can't see the dancers, but you're invited into their alien world where bodies are absent, leaving behind shadows of their sweeping gestures, gentle flourishes, and violent peregrination. the music on this record is the infrastructure of the human body; at times it is pleasant, at others, horrifying.

since fremdkoerper was originally intended as a companion to the dance performance, it lacks the typical structure of his more conventional releases. epic drones lead into dramatic scores. moods change without warning. glitchy textures give way into thick, heavy tones. the transition from the subterranean rumble of opening track "mutisil" to the distorted raygun blast of "scream" is enough to reset your heartbeat (in fact, you can consider this press release fair warning). the hulking sine-wave drone of "1407" is quickly invaded by hungry extraterrestrials on "bite double." this is the record with which to test out your new stereo.

peter rehberg (b. 1968) is an electronic audio artist living and working in vienna, austria. he has given live performances, both solo and collaborative, throughout north and south america, europe, japan and australia. his resume of collaborators is as impressive as it is long, including luminaries such as sonic youth, amm, jim o'rourke, fennesz, zbigniew karkowski, kevin drumm, florian hecker, pan sonic, and keith rowe. rehberg took part in the 2nd göteborg art biennale (against all evens) curated by cm von hausswolff. fremdkoerper isn't rehberg’s first work with dancers. he's collaborated with tujiko noriko for two projects, as dacm, and is currently working with gisele vienne and dennis cooper on two new pieces.

the vinyl version of 2 is limited to 1,500 copies for the world and is presented in an old-style tip-on gatefold jacket with art-worked innersleeves. the 2xlp is pressed on 180 gram vinyl. a truly heavy collaboration.

ktl is stephen o’malley (sunno))), khanate) and peter rehberg (pita) - a threatening collaboration taking in parallel worlds of extreme computer music and black metal.

2 is the devastatingly beautiful four part follow up to the acclaimed self-titled debut and was recorded in a former abattoir in angers, as well as a 16th century manor in the extreme west of france. taking the blueprint that was laid out on the first record even further, with the ecstatic build up of ‘theme’, the near psychedelic ‘abattoir’, and closing with the twisted romanticism of ‘snow 2’. an upgrade both artistically and emotionally.

as with the first album, elements appeared in the finished version of the theatre piece ‘kindertotenlieder’ by gisele vienne and dennis cooper, which was premiered in brest, france, in march 2007.

stephen o’malley (soma) is a musician currently based in paris, france. he started the band sunno))) with greg anderson in addition to playing in the groups khanate, burning witch, ginnunngagap, æthenor, grave temple, and lotus eaters. he has collaborated with merzbow, julian cope, joe preston, attila csihar, lee dorrian, aaron turner, oren ambarchi, malefic, wrest, boris, earth, and z’ev. he is also a well respected graphic designer and does artwork and album covers for most of his own projects.

peter rehberg is an author and performer of electronic audio works based in vienna, austria. he has collaborated live and in the studio with russell haswell, florian hecker, jim o’rourke, christian fennesz, stephen o’malley (as ktl), z’ev, tujiko noriko, kevin drumm, carlos giffoni, mika vainio, zbigniew karkowski, rosy parlane, keith rowe, gert-jan prins, marcus schmickler, dennis cooper, jade, sunno))), lasse marhaug as well as being a member of mimeo. he also opertates the editions mego label.

collection of answer-pieces on the oeuvre of dave philips’ late 80s hardcore band “fear of god.” damn - look at that lineup... reads like my own personal mix-tape from the noisier end of the contemporary sound-terrorism/experimental music spectrum. few disappoint with their decisively short remix-blasts... just about as good as remix-compilation discs get...
