  • objets rassemblés (4:23)
december 2010 release ; first appearance on vinyl since the 1971 philips prospective 21e siècle pressing of these two seminal suites by pierre schaeffer, widely esteemed as the canonic musique concrète pieces ...

one can only speculate as to what people thought upon first hearing the “cinq études” as broadcast by the ortf on october 5th, 1948 ; but the resultant butterfly-effect ripples can’t be ignored ... this music is the blueprint of literally all cut & paste / found-sound / collage music of the following six decades & it just as likely that the majority of “the music” we all hold dear wouldn’t exist were it not for schaeffer’s incredibly prescient vision ... which isn’t to overstate the historical importance over the quality of the piece(s) in question ; one need only to listen to the sound-sample to hear what is far from solely a technical feat (the winsome piano chords get me every time) ...

this luxury pressing (c/o, oddly, the french contemporary jazz giant dreyfus) issues both sets of pieces on a 180-gram, whisper-quiet pressing that makes it the archival-quality version to own ... utterly essential !!!

pierre schaeffer
5 études de bruits / étude aux objets
sortie : 2010

lionel marchetti / olivier capparoseqqus • grand véhicule” compact disc

    • eqqus (1) (6:56)
    • eqqus (2) (16:41)
    • eqqus (3) (9:28)
september 2009 release ; once again, the inimitable lionel marchetti (working with recent partner-in-crime olivier capparos) unleashes an impeccable 3333 suite of musique concrète (composed at the ina-grm during 2001-2002) drawn from “presences sonores et voix” by john oswald, pierre henry, pierre schaeffer, jean-luc godard, henri chopin, hans bellmer, charley patton (?), ingram marshall, charlton heston (?!?), alfred hitchcock (!?), and “divers hasards radiophoniques” ...

while the sliding, sub-low-end figures remind me a little of the recent/excellent g*parkreuters” lp, i don’t even have a framework for the austere, plunderphonic organizations the two get up to herein, with snatches of familiar foley & dialogue interwoven into the running narrative ... highly recommended !!!

    lionel marchetti & olivier capparos
    equus

equus is a collaborative work of musique concrète recorded in 2001-02 on a commission from the ina grm it is truly a delight for pogus to add this title to our catalog. as capparos notes:

equus guides us through human memory and history. it may sound a bit strange that sound & music would appear as a "vehicle", or as we had cast a lead into a labyrinth. this brings us to the question of whether we are alive or not; travelling the path throughout these soundings would drive us down and up our consciousness and our listening, not to mention that we are dead or alive.

olivier capparos is an instrumental and electro-acoustic composer whose work encompasses philosophy and literature as well as music. many of his compositions are focused on voice and its interpretation through loudspeakers. capparos was composer in residence at the ina-grm in paris (2001), the studio national des arts contemporains du fresnoy (2002 3), and at the argos center in bruxelles (2004). he has composed and conducted works for chamber orchestra, voice (soprano), violin, and piano, and has co-produced many other recordings and radio broadcasts with lionel marchetti throughout their long association.

lionel marchetti was born in france in 1967. his interest in music resides in the qualities of sound. he started to experiment by himself and later discovered the rich french corpus of musique concrète through xavier garcia. he is one of a handful of artists who in the mid- to-late 1990s took electro-acoustic music out of academic studios and into the free improvisation ring. a scholar who worked at the cfmi (lyon) and ina-grm studios and published a book on acousmatic composer michel chion, marchetti developed a set-up of microphones and loudspeakers he uses on stage along with tape recorders, prepared cds, motors and radios. he often refers to his instruments as an “electro-acoustic contraption”. his musique concrète studio work incorporates sound collage and academic electro-acoustic composition, though the level of poetry and refusal of genre boundaries in his music puts him closer to kristoff k. roll and luc ferrari than pierre henry or bernard parmegiani. following his encounter with metamkine label owner and fellow sound experimentalist jérôme noetinger in the early 1990s, a series of live and improvisation-based projects would run parallel to his more academic career. the marchetti-noetinger duo was the first of such projects and remains the longest lasting one. they are also involved in the audio- visual project le cube. in addition, marchetti performs with the influential improv collective archipel (with emmanuel petit, sophie agnel, fabrice charles, pascal bathus, and werchowski).

june 2012 release ; ... in what is essentially an answer to my long-unanswered prayers (was starting to have a crisis of faith there for a few decades) ; peterpitarehberg, in accord with the grm’s françois bonnet & christian zanési, has formed a new emego sub-label dedicated to issuing choice nuggets from the grm archives in contemporary high-spec vinyl pressings (if the production values here are anything to go by, this is going to be one hell of a series ; embossed sleeves with printed inners, tastefully re-configured art direction by stephen o’malley, mastering & cutting by d&m, ultra-clean pressings) ...

... receiving an original copy of this, the final release in the famed philips’ “prospective 21e siècle” series from 1978 as a “parting gift” upon completing my 40-stereo-channel commission there last october was a real highlight of the trip ... it’s the “white whale” for many that seek out this stuff (having been issued in a single, french pressing ... unlike the many territorial issues of the other “21e’s”) ... covering a later composition sketched out by the grm’s founder pierre schaeffer, then realized by technician bernard dürr on the coupigny modular system(s), this gorgeously dynamic, bleep-heavypureelectronic music may come as a shock to those familiar with schaeffer’s oeuvre (esp. to those familiar with the whole grm / wdr divide) ...

... taken as a series of short pieces made in the mid-70’s on a boutique, one-of-a-kind analogue modular synthesizer, it pretty much can’t be beat ; dürr’s incredible technical skill in eking out all manner of deep voltage-controlled squiggle is highly impressive throughout ... the fm’ed oscillator timbres & deep filter-zap placements are all perfectly set according to schaeffer’s instructions, offering a beautifully narrative work that acts as something of an alternate history to the staid avenues of long-form synthesizer abstraction ...

... thusfar, i can safely say that this is my favorite release of 2012 ; it’s simply incredible on a multitude of levels ... naturally, it comes highly recommended !!!

    le trièdre fertile
    lp

    release date 05.06.2012

cut by rashad becker at dubplates & mastering, berlin, march 2012
    layout: stephen o'malley
    translations: valérie vivancos
coordination grm: christian zanési & françois bonnet
    executive production: peter rehberg

le trièdre fertile full version 1975-1976, with the participation of bernard dürr.

this trihedron, schaeffer's last piece, echoes the physicists "reference trihedron" linked to the three fundamental measurements of sound: frequency, duration and intensity. the basic signs of traditional sol-fa that enable to transcribe pitches, rhythms and nuances also correspond to these three measurements. however, it is precisely outside or beyond these parameters that, all through his life, schaeffer researched music. hence, qualifying this trihedron as fertile, is the confession "of a late repentance"

on the other hand, and against all odds, this piece was only composed from synthetic sounds, developed by bernard dürr. it is pierre schaeffer's only purely electronic music work. here, the synthesizer is rather monitored by sensitivity than by computation principles, thus letting uncanny structures emerge.

june 2009 release ; vinyl version, in a deluxe triple-gatefold, which reprints the epic liner notes of the cd edition in full ... needless to say, but it’s pretty great to have such canonic pieces as the russolo’s “chorale”, ruttman’s “wochende”, pousseur’s “scambi”, mumma’s “dresden interleaf”, boehmer’s “aspekt (listen to the sound-sample for the opening blast ; just bonkers) on “god’s format” ...

normally i’m not one for conceptualized compilations bridging the old with the new (especially ones involving dj spooky), although i have to make something of an exception here as this was curated with a degree of loving care that discounts my own petty concepts of right & wrong...

no excerpts, just a few hours of seminal early electronic transmissions coupled with a few contemporary-era odes to those magmatic magnetic aktions. a really nice overview: futurism to ‘cinema pour l’oreille’ to musique concrète to live electronics ... all over the first 5 tracks alone.

some of this material is available elsewhere but ... so what. it flows nicely, providing a listening experience akin to a finely executed dj mix. one of the better avenues to get your kid brother hooked on experimental electronic music’s many flowering pastures ...

an anthology of noise & electronic music #1
    first a-chronology 1921-2001

    srv190
    3xlp

the first volume of seven published from 2001 to 2011, curated, noted and edited by guy marc hinant.

    an unpublished history

this is the great beginning of a vast anthology of "noise and electronic music" that we plan for the following years in 7 double volumes. this volume begins in the 1920s, with the russolo brothers, and looks at each decade in turn - varèse, cage, schaeffer, xenakis, the great pioneers - the first traces of a music that was necessarily revolutionary: electronic music, created from nothing (and hence to be entirely invented). some pieces on these cds are certainly classics, but there are others, which, though old, were distributed informally or never even released. our more contemporary pieces are, wherever possible, previously unreleased. in fact, more than the half of what we listen here is unreleased and unpublished.

    ...

the gathering of eclectic noise makers

whereas composers like stockhausen, berio or pousseur had come from serialism and began making electronic music as a continuation of their work with traditional instruments, others such as boehmer or oliveros composed right away on electronic bases; there were those who invented new methods, like schaeffer and concrete music, others were outsiders, revolutionaries or visionaries like xenakis or cage, without forgetting the branch of sound derived from dada, the complex forms of free jazz, john coltrane, the acoustic and electronic improvisation scene, rock of the alternative, psychedelic and industrial varieties, the german wave of the 1970s, the last generation of electronic musicians from the beginning or middle of the 1990s, dj, reinventors of drones, painters or sculptors using sound, and process or software creators. the noise goes on ...
