phill niblock
four full flutes

phill niblock's music has no precedents, invites no comparisons, and doesn't even suggest any metaphors to me. it is simply itself and must be heard to be believed," wrote tom johnson in the village voice a decade ago. the same is true today--no one is doing what phill niblock is doing. niblock takes the building blocks of music and stacks them in inimitable formations.

in four full flutes, adjacent tones beat violently against one another while clouds of harmonics hover above the wavering drone....when the piece ends, it takes the listener a few moments to recover. this physiological experience, when the ossicles slow their vibrating and the membrane hairs come to a standstill, is probably the only aspect of the music not regulated by the score....playing this compact disc in a different room or moving around the room while the disc is being played actually alters the outcome. similarly, the music can be experienced anew through different combinations, extra speakers, home stereo pyrotechnics, and volume level alterations. the effects intensify with louder levels of volume. the higher the volume goes, the higher you go. --neil strauss

the aural effect is minimal to the max, but it isn't simplistic. the tones vibrate and glow, the densely packed texture shifting hues like a sonic aurora borealis." -- john rockwell, new york timesthe four pieces on this 80 minute cd are for multiple tracks of alto flutes, flutes, flutes and alto flutes, and bass flutes, performed by petr kotik, susan stenger, and eberhard blum.--phill niblock

phill niblock (b.1933)
disseminate
mode 131

phill niblock (born in indiana, 1933) is a seminal figure in "drone" music who crosses the downtown and improv scenes. a characteristic of niblock's drone style is its subtle, gradual alteration of pitch which leads one to loose a sense of "time" and draws one deeper and deeper into the sound itself. the remarkable thing is that niblock achieves this effect by almost always using traditional acoustic instruments.

niblock is an intermedia artist using music, film, photography, video and computers. he initially was trained in the visual arts and worked as a photographer; he takes inspiration from minimal artists, including rothko, judd and andre.

he turns 70 this year and will be honored with many festivals and retrospectives of his music worldwide.

disseminate ostrava
in this orchestra piece, the players read from a conventional score. there is no after-recording manipulation of the material. the recording comes from the ostrava days festival in the czech republic, where the 41-piece ensemble ocnm is supplemented by members of the janacek philharmonic.

kontradictionaries
this work was written for the kontra-trio. the trio (formed in 1992) of bischof, mejer and bachmann concentrates on the sound of low wind instruments. the three wind contrabasses are used as sources for acoustic phenomena.

here, the musicians recorded "samples" of the notes in a recording studio. niblock then edited the samples, made pitch shifts of them, and combined this material in a multitrack score. there is no manipulation of the sound of the instruments, the combination of the different microtonal pitches and timbres of the instruments modifies the sound. the musicians later added "live" parts to the niblock multitrack-mixed-to stereo recording.

disseminate q-o2
written for the belgian ensemble for contemporary and improvised music, q-o2. the work creates a haze of slowly shifting, vibrating sounds.

the cover is an original photograph by phill niblock.the booklet includes an essay robert ashley and notes by petr kotik and the composer.

various artists | from brussels with love

the very first cd release of the classic 1980 compilation album from brussels with love, which was also the debut release from chic belgian indie label les disques du crepuscule (twi 007). originally released as a deluxe cassette/book package in november 1980 it featured 20 exclusive tracks from the international avant garde and new wave, as well as the celebrated factory records roster. then, as now, the contributing artists include gavin bryars, harold budd, dome, the durutti column, john foxx, martin hannett, richard jobson, bill nelson, new order and michael nyman. the programme also includes extended interviews with brian eno and iconic french actress jeanne moreau.

the cd has been digitally remastered from the original master tapes, and features 75 minutes of material. most of the tracks featured here remain unavailable elsewhere. for reasons of space just one has been deleted from the original cassette (a certain ratio), although this track is available on ltmcd 2443.

the 20-pages facsimile booklet features original artwork by benoît hennebert, claude stassart and jean-françois octave, as well as archive images and detailed liner notes.

sedimental press release...
fo(a)rm no. 4 (topography)
144 pp., 7 x 9”, perfect-bound, full-color cover
(with exclusive cd: ghosts and others by phill niblock)

fo(a)rm no. 4 (topography) treats the movement over, through or across a landscape and the act of documenting, utilizing or noticing an interaction with that landscape. it concerns a mapping of the points between self and space - traversing and/or transforming natural and urban environments. within these pages, intelligent perspectives find fertile soil.

included within are essays by sound theorist douglas kahn (noise water meat) on spherics and and cultural theorist steven connor (dumbstruck) on listening to sound-art, lengthy interviews with minimalist luminary phill niblock and whitney biennial artist julianne swartz, revealing articles on sound-installation projects by composers marc behrens and eric la casa, conceptual artist sreshta premnath’s carbon-paper traces of lived experience, public interaction and social sculpture by swiss artist san keller and portland-based sculptor david eckard, composer/improviser jean-luc guionnet’s series of “linescape” drawings, an historical essay on the holy wu-t’ai mountains in 11th century china by eliot weinberger, charles stein’s striking visual language works, poems by william fox, haleh hatami, andré spears, jibade-khalil huffman, and rachel daley and a delicately vibrational cover by sound-artist seth cluett.

(topography) also includes, in conjunction with sedimental records, the never-released and radically different sound-work by phill niblock, ghosts and others. this cd is only to be found in fo(a)rm....

i am happy to announce the long awaited issue fo a rm magazine 4 (topography issue) that includes an exclusive soundwork from phill niblock entitled "ghosts and others" pressed by sedimental. this release and expanded interview is the realization of a never completed project between sedimental and the now defunct publication n d. sound artist and composer seth nehil who is also 1/4th of publication fo a rm proposed completing this project and all parties agreed.

the material on the cd is a very different work that phill created for an installation at mj scumacher's studio five beekman series in march of 1998. because this material is much more of an audio collage/field recording than phill's typical composed droneworks he never felt comfortable for it to be released as a regular document but in fact it was his idea to include it with the interview i had conducted with him later that year in '98 to be published in n d.

phill has never allowed the document to surface expect for the free copies he has circulated over the past several years. this is the first formal, and only, release of the document. it is a full length cd.
