| here’s the vinyl version of one of my top 10 favorite records of 2004 - philip samartzis’ “soft and loud.” this item is entirely special for many reasons, the main one being that mr. joey rhyu - the force majeure behind the fledgling plates of sound imprint - decided to form said label to issue this record on vinyl, domestically, after (like many of you... well, 10 of you at least...) being wooed enough by my description of here on mms to check it out... this is exactly the kind of interconnect i had in mind when i started the shop; finding homes for challenging music(s) from afar... completely warms my heart...
what results; not just your average vinyl reissue, no sir... instead, this is beautifully mastered & rendered in full rti-spec: 180-gram vinyl, full color everything, each copy hand-numbered, even including an insert with the lines in english on one side, japanese on the other... the works; just about as deluxe a package anyone could ever hope for. my only gripe is that it’s limited to 500 (something like this should, you know, in a perfect world, be around for a while...)
here’s the original description i wrote of the cd version on philip’s own microphonics label (now o/p) when it first arrived (all six pieces from the disc are on the vinyl) :
the debut disc from philip samartzis’ own microphonics label, a set of masterful ina-grm-lineage sound-collage pieces constructed from location recordings, acoustic phenomena, and slight digital processing over the last 3 odd years. this record is quickly becoming one of my favorite discs of 2004, somewhat unfortunate that its circulation is finally taking root now during the waning days of 2004 (i’ve sent my “bests” lists out long ago). stands out like a marshmallow-coated ostrich in the landscape of hack cdr-only releases of improv scrabblings from rank and file composers... nuanced, dramatically jarring, and cohesively constructed electro-acoustic epics of the highest order. i strongly urge anyone who hasn’t heard any of philip’s work (or, in fact, anyone who wants to hear a sparkling example of digital-age musique concrète) to give this a few repeated listens. wonders will be revealed... |

| originally conceived for eight-channel surround sound playback, soft and loud is comprised of field recordings made in japan between 1999 and 2001 that were later arranged and mixed in melbourne over a three year period.
the objective of the field recordings was to document a variety of common environments in order to investigate the behaviour of singular events and their relationships to other sounds occupying the japanese soundscape. of particular interest is the cohesion with which artificially generated sounds are incorporated within the generally subdued natural acoustic environment.
soft and loud is the first release to be published on samartzis' microphonics label, and is the first in a series of works based on his investigations into surround sound spatialisation for installation art.
“philip samartzis is currently co-ordinator and lecturer in sound within the media arts course area of the school of art & culture, rmit university, where he is engaged in research into surround sound and immersive environments for installation art.
some of the outcomes from his research has informed a number of exhibitions including; unheard spaces (2004) presented at the candiani cultural centre, mestre, italy; presence & absence (2002) presented at statenlogement, hoorn; transparency (2001) presented at fondation cartier pour l'art contemporain, paris; soft & loud (2001) presented at central tafe gallery, perth; and dodg'em (1999), a collaboration with martine corompt, and first prize winner of the national digital art awards organised by the institute of modern art in brisbane.
as an independent curator he has organised two immersion festivals (1999 & 2001) as well as variable resistance, a series of international sound art presentations for the australian centre for contemporary art. samartzis has also curated variable resistance: ten hours of sound from australia for the san francisco museum of modern art and the podewil arts centre in berlin.
as a solo artist he has performed widely in australia, japan, europe and the united states, and has published four solo compact disks, residue (1998), windmills bordered by nothingness (1999), mort aux vaches (2003) & soft and loud (2004).” |
