matt davis / phil durrant / mark wastellopen” compact disc

  • open (18:27)
  • fist (23:30)
erstwhile press release...
matt davis: field recordings, electronics, trumpet
phil durrant: software synths and treatments
mark wastell: amplified textures

mark wastell and matt davis met and first played together in a workshop led by eddie prévost in london during the spring of 1996. soon after, wastell was invited to join chris burn's ensemble, in which he played with phil durrant for the first time. subsequently, phil and mark worked together in the quartets assumed possibilities and quatuor accorde, documented on rossbin and emanem cds, respectively.

the debut trio concert by davis/durrant/wastell took longer to organise than any of the participants could have anticipated, due mainly to matt's temporary relocation to barcelona. the three musicians didn't come together until august 2000, for a concert at all angels in west london. this was an all-acoustic incarnation: trumpet (davis), violin (durrant) and cello (wastell). a recording of this concert was issued on wastell's confront label as a limited edition cd-r, now long out of print.

when davis returned from spain in early 2002, the trio began to rehearse on a regular basis. arising from these intensive rehearsals was a new group aesthetic and a shift in focus from acoustic to electronic-based material. by this stage, durrant had developed a personal language using software synths and treatments and wastell had begun investigating a sound source comprising what he refers to as "amplified textures", into which davis' newfound interest in field recordings and electronics fit perfectly. open documents this exciting period in the group's evolution, with enough groundwork having been laid to develop a strong and unique musical identity but without the all-too-identifiable sound of a group overfamiliar with itself.

open was recorded in two sessions at lmc sound in march and may 2003, both superbly engineered by tom wallace. it represents the first recording of durrant exclusively using a computer, and points to a new direction for the london scene, one more organic and less directly rooted in the free improvisation of the 1980's. open largely consists of tiny, connected events, never drifting into excessive caution, always taking risks and ceaselessly pressing against the overhanging silence.

john butcher: tenor or soprano saxophone
phil durrant: live electronic manipulation and modular feedback

john butcher and phil durrant have both been prominent members of the english improv scene since the mid-eighties, releasing everything from solo records to being members of all-star orchestras. in 1984, they formed a trio with john russell, with durrant on violin, a band which is in its 17th year together. in 1997, the two began their electromanipulation project, in which durrant transforms butcher's sounds electronically in real time, interacting with butcher's live playing. the music has three potential strands; the amplified saxophone and two electronic processing chains - individually controlled by durrant - which are triggered by and/or derived from the saxophone's signal. no sampling is used.

this is the second cd which butcher and durrant have released utilizing this approach. the first was the critically acclaimed secret measures (wobbly rail), which was a recording of the first concert they played in this style in november of 1997. requests and antisongs captures the duo more than two years later, carefully recorded in a london studio by toby robinson. butcher demonstrates his seemingly effortless mastery of his instrument(s) throughout, while durrant applies all of the numerous live processing skills he's carefully honed, not least as an integral part of keith rowe's all-star mimeo electronic orchestra.

ticklish (10.2000)

micro-macro. electronic music between grooves and non-idiomatics. ticklich consists of the distinguished london improviser kev hopper (among others, stereolab, high llamas, cooperation with charles hayward), richard sanderson (cooperation with steve beresford/anna homler, simon fisher turner, peter cusack, kaffe matthews, blixa bargeld), phil durrant (cooperation with john butcher, john russell, thomas lehn, radu malfatti, the music in movement electronic orchestra), and the video artist rob flint.

their music occupies an vacant space. they take the best models of danceable, cool catchy electronic music into something free and pulsing. and visa-versa: from the abstract heights of improvised music, as they are scaled only in england, ticklish come across the clicks and cuts of post techno.

their music is groove without the dictate of the beat, cool without betting on the superficiality of a hook. and improvisation without "plink plonk."

this cd is their debut. the cover art is from rob flint.

1999 release ; domestic issue of the grob-labelqueue” disc, itself the debut from this keith rowe organized “orchestra” of electro-acoustic improvisors - an interchangable lineup (which differs from track to track here) involving peterpitarehberg, gert-jan prins, marcus schmickler, jérôme noetinger, cor fuhler, thomas lehn, christian fennesz, justin bennett, phil durrant, yannis kyriakides, and richard barrett, as recorded in germany & holland back in 1997 ...

these early meetings of the group have a certain “go for it” vibe that, imho, was smoothed out in later concerts (take it or leave it - personally i’m into the high percentage of “pile-ups” herein) ... but then again, aside from thom lehn (who sounds fantastic throughout - listen to the sound-sample for a few choice bleeps), i have a hard time making out most of the individual players, due to the number of redunant software & hardware processing & sampling algorithms being used at once throughout (remember, this was 1997 - i mean the g3 mac powerbooks could barely handle a single 16-bit 44.1k i/o stream w/ real-time processing ; much has changed in the intervening years) ...

while not the best representation of this particular group, it was most certainly the first disc of eai that many of us in the states got to hear, and such as it has a “time capsule” place in my heart ...

label: rossbin
format: cd
catalog #: rs007
time: 61:00

chris burn: piano, toy pianos
rhodri davies: harp
phil durrant: violin
mark wastell: violoncello

all works are quartet improvisations except 'related activity' composed by mark wastell and 'still point' composed by rhodri davies

recorded 7th january 2001 at gateway studios, london. engineered by steve lowe.

assumed possibilities comprises of four musicians who understand the meaning and use of understatement and close listening.

this quartets non-idiomatic music attains a minutely focused intensity, where the subtlest shifts in pitch, timbre and texture speak volumes.

though sounds sometimes sting and startle, the music carefully colours the aural environment, often hardly modifying the silence... growing out of and merging back into it.

the results are detailed, meticulous, precise and responsive. sensitive music for sensitive ears.

the recording of 'still point' marked the occasion of the quartets third anniversary in january 2001,their previous self-titled cd was released in 1998 to critical acclaim on confront recordings.

variations 3 - a london compilation (pd 10)

total time 77'39"

cover by clive graham
released 1998

jewel case cd with 12 page booklet

a third and final collection of lesser known & infrequently recorded artists living in london. considering its size, london is not well recognised as a centre for experimental and electronic music (at least not since the early 80's). additionally there is virtually no funding or support for this kind of music from within the system. consequently many composers and musicians who can fit in, work outside of the uk. naturally enough there are many diverse artists in london that carry on their work in isolation, both at home and within a great many unsupported clubs and venues. this cd covers my own personal favorite discoveries and rediscoveries since the release of variations 2 in 1997.

syngen brown
these 3 short pieces are the first releases by syngen brown. all the music is made using second generation sound sources in addition to his own environmental recordings.

wits
this is another debut. wits are 4 women (viv d. corringham, voice, electronics; sophia lycouris, movement; ashleigh marsh, keyboards, percussion; gina southgate, bric a brac), who specialise in live work. along with their use of conventional instruments (voice, electronics, keyboards and percussion), and a dancer, they also fill the stage space with a huge supply of everyday objects that are noisily explored and unravelled as an integral part of their audio-visual performances.

phil durrant
is best known as an improviser. mostly he plays violin in various ensembles and has featured on cd's with other improvisers including john butcher, chris burn, john russell, thomas lehn etc. he also works with analogue electronics, most recently with electronic improvisers mimeo. this piece was composed for a production of salomé given at st pancras chambers by the seven sisters group and uses analogue electronics.

voltage
are (moshi honen, guitar; sharon gal, voice, bass, toys; dennis austin, drums, percussion). this is an edited version of a live performance given at 'the klinker', one of london's longest running clubs for experimental music, film and poetry. this is their first available recording as voltage, although 2 of the members appear on mouthcrazy's 'open/open wide' on ass run vol.4.

clive graham
this recording is made from a variety of old half inch and quarter inch tapes that i have had lying around for quite some time. the last 5 minutes of this piece was previously issued on the wire magazine's subscription only cd 'the wire tapper 4' in august 1999.

andrew king
is one of the few young members of the traditional song forum, who specialise in the furtherance of traditional folk music within the british isles. he has previously released a cd of songs called 'the bitter harvest' (available via world serpent), that dwelt on the darker and less joyous stories within the folk tradition. this piece is from an american source and dates from the late 19th century and is for voice and harmonium. recorded at retina studios, september 1999.

aquiles panteleao
is a brazilian born composer who is completing his phd in electroacoustic music at city university. in 1998 this piece was awarded a distinction at the ars electronica music competition in linz.

bob cobbing
3 pieces from this senior member of the poetry and sound poetry scene, the earliest of these pieces dates from 1964. all 3 pieces were recorded at a reading given at the lewisham arthouse on 9.1.99.

hastings of malawi
are (john grieve, dave hodes, heman pathak). this extract was taken direct from the lp 'vibrant stapler obscures characteristic growth' that came out in 1980. most of the original 1000 copies were eventually destroyed, with around 300 copies that were actually sold. most of the sales would have been through the united dairies mail order list, who were probably their only outlet. all members of this group were involved one way or another in the very earliest nurse with wound records.
