"the thousand symphonies"
(cat no. plana-h 31nmn.077)
digipack cd

alga marghen presents the first edition ever issued of dick higgins’ music. fluxus founding member, in 1958 dick higgins studied composition and experimental music with john cage in his class at the new school for social research in new york together with, among others, la monte young, richard maxfield, toshi ichiyanaghi, george brecht, allan kaprow, al hansen, jackson mac low.

in the spring of 1968 geoffrey hendricks and robert watts told dick higgins of a project that was afoot at douglass college, where both were teaching at the time, to organize a show around guns. at that time the usa police seemed to have nothing better to do than to chase down teenagers for possessing miniscule amounts of marijuana and throwing them in jail, thus ruining their lives. dick higgins decided it would be more worthy if one could set all the policemen in the usa to composing symphonies themselves. so he proposed that the beautiful music paper be machine gunned and that symphonies be derived from the result.

geoffrey hendricks arranged for captain toby of the south brunswick police to do this, which duly happened with a 9mm mp40 schmeisser submachine gun, filmed by alison knowles. a volunteer orchestra, conducted by philip corner and including charlotte moorman, performed nine of the resulting symphonies at douglass college on december 9th. the douglass concert was taped, but the only copy disappeared when the ars viva! gallery in berlin, germany, went bankrupt in 1984. the whole situation was documented with photographs in source magazine in 1970.

as philip corner, conductor of the recordings presented here, said: “leave it to dick higgins to come up with the most spectacular way to generate a page of patternless notes. once over this dramatic gesture with machine-gun bullets leaves a stack of paper full of holes. i had not thought of this before but there must have been a conscious connection to the social turmoil of the 60's - all too unfortunately, come back around to high relevance these days”.

first press limited to 500 copies with digipack sleeve, also including a 16 page booklet with full documentation presenting 2 texts by dick higgins from the 1960s as well as a philip corner testimony, original photos and original scores

release date: september 12, 2006 (cd)

before homer (simpson) there was arthur russell and his vision of a utilitarian and common social oasis. there appears to be in every state of the union a springfield, be it county, city or street. arthur imagined that his music could be universally accepted in each and every one of them.

springfield is one of the last compositions arthur russell wrote in his all too-short lifetime. arthur recorded over four hours of tracking with the intention of collaborating with a producer for completion. it never happened until now when the dfa accepted the monumental task of editing and completing the track. no overdubs were used with the exception of minimal keyboards on the remix. three versions are included with separate vocal takes. the result is a classic electro dub track that ranks beside arthur’s visionary club music and the dfa’s finest remixes.

the remaining tracks are some of arthur’s finest, most twisted moments, and culled from the unreleased 1985 album corn. see my brother, he’s jumping out (let’s go swimming #1), is the original (and no less stunning) version of what became the classic 12” released a year later. corn# 3 is a hypnotic instrumental with casiotone, cello and found water sounds while hiding your present from you (cd only) is a psychedelic blur that hints at the elements that came later with world of echo. closing out the album is you have did the right thing when you put that skylight in, arthur’s ode to his close friend ernie brooks home skylight. the heavy metal cellos rumble throughout as arthur sings, “it makes your place, your pad, a nicer place to be”.

springfield is a companion album to the critically acclaimed calling out of context, and offers further exploration of the genius of arthur russell.

calling out of context
(au-1001-2)

release date: february 17, 2004

12 extraordinary unreleased tracks from the timeless visionary genius of the new york underground.

when arthur russell died in 1992 he left an overwhelming archive of over a 1000 tapes that reveal the sublime genius of one of the most important musicians of the last 25 years. as a cellist, songwriter, composer, and disco visionary arthur russell consistently blurred the lines of our expectations of what pop music could be. originally from iowa, arthur travelled west in 1970 to study indian classical composition with ali akbar khan, befriended allen ginsberg, performed with alice coltrane, and then moved to new york in 1973 to study at the manhattan school of music. quickly gravitating to the then burgeoning downtown scene, arthur wrote and performed his minimal compositions (captured on instrumentals and tower of meaning. both to be re-issued by audika) and collaborated with a who's who of some of new york's most influential artists including rhys chatham, ernie brooks, david byrne, phillip glass, laurie anderson, jon gibson, robert wilson, christian wolff, john cage, arnold dreyblatt, and phill niblock.

it then changed by a mere accident. simply, he went to a disco. inspired by the sonic repetition and sense of community, arthur wrote and recorded some of the most important records of the disco era including 'kiss me again', 'is it all over my face', and co-founded sleeping bag records with partner will socolov releasing 'go bang' and the album 24-24 music. in 2002 audika records entered into an exclusive licensing agreement with the estate of arthur russell to issue previously unreleased and out of print material from arthur's vast archive. the first album calling out of context , features 12 previously unreleased tracks recorded during arthur's prime years 1985-90. the material is drawn from corn, an album that was completed in 1985 but never released, and an abandoned album recorded for rough trade as arthur had become ill. many of these tracks show hidden sides of arthur's talent and underline the loss of his great potential. contrary by nature, arthur's spontaneous reaction and altered perception to his environment produced music that remains challenging and contemporary. arthur's open hearted attitude to music was far ahead of it's time, and now that time is ours.

peter zummo
experimenting with household chemicals

peter zummo has been composing since 1967 and has performed his works for solo trombone and ensemble worldwide. he was a significant early founder of the 1970s and 1980s musical movement that included integrating and reinterpreting various genres, including western classical-music experimentation, american popular music and jazz, and the indigenous music of non-western cultures.

zummo is a wind player whose own performance is an integral part of his compositions. he has pioneered extended trombone techniques and also uses the dijeridoo, euphonium, synthesizers, and his voice in performance. he has an affection for band music and has main tained ensembles in new york city since 1976, including the peter zummo orchestras, zummo labs, the environmental combo, and the intermediate combo. most of the original group members are working with him to this day. his compositions for ensemble typically build on original melodies and melodic fragments, generating interactive situations in which the musicians explore the boundaries of common and extended practice.

an important subset of his compositions has been the many works created for choreographers. in 1985 he won a bessie award for a score for lateral pass, by trisha brown; two years later he collaborated with visual artist donald judd to create the score for brown's newark.

zummo's recordings are available on loris records as well as xi.

with accuracy and humor, peter zummo (born 1948) often describes his unique music as “minimalism plus a whole lot more.” he is an important exponent of the american contemporary classical tradition whose compositions explore the methodologies of not just minimalism, but also jazz, world music, and rock, while seeking to create freedom in ensemble situations. zummo’s realization of the contemporary urge to make music that behaves like “nature in its manner of operation” (john cage) is to encourage spontaneous, individual decisions within a self-structuring, self-negotiating group of performers. his scores provide unique strategies (such as a “matrix of overlapping systems,” freely modulating repetition rates, etc.) and materials for achieving that aim. song iv (1985), a trio version of the final song from the four-song suite composed for the trisha brown dance company’s lateral pass, is a continuous tabla-and-amplified-cello groove with trombone (with voice multiphonics) and vocal (russell) melodies and harmonies. instruments (1980) is a composition in seven movements for duet, trio and quartet. short phrases based on intervallic jumps are repeated at individual repetition rates; the ensemble listens for a unison playing of the phrase, and reverses the phrase at that moment. different notes sound together in unplanned ways, resulting in combination (bass) tones. the complete version of lateral pass (1985) makes its first appearance on disc and features a previously unissued performance of song iv for quintet. zummo with an x is an essential document for anyone interested in the multifaceted evolution of american experimental music, especially in the vibrant downtown new york scene of the 1970s and ’80s.

among the many composers who have drawn inspiration from the music of indonesia, the one whose outlook became most pervaded by the structure of gamelan music may be barbara benary (b 1946), co-founder and guiding spirit of new york’s gamelan son of lion. a quiet, self-effacing presence on the new york music scene for almost four decades now, benary has maintained a low profile, but behind the scenes she is well connected. a child of manhattan’s conceptualist movement, she was the designated violinist of early minimalism, a pioneer in american gamelan, and an early example of an increasingly frequent type, the ethnomusicologist-turned-composer. chances are you’ve never heard her music on compact disc before this, but new york’s downtown scene has regarded her highly for a long time. hers is a spiritual music, and the spirituality resides in the universality of her lines, universal because they are simple, particular to no one culture. like harrison and virgil thomson, benary has a faith in the power of music’s most basic elements, which she knits into intricate patterns before letting them unravel again.

the title aural shoehorning (1997) refers to the listener’s tendency to confront unusual tuning systems, such as those of javanese gamelan, by trying to “shoehorn” them into the framework of our familiar diatonic scales. heterophony is the overall theme of the piece, and the various ways in which a gamelan and a diatonic ensemble of clarinet/bass clarinet and keyboard percussion can interact as a mixed marriage in which neither partner attempts to convert the other. barang 1 & 2 (1975) are solo and duo explorations of a javanese pentatonic mode called barang. sun on snow (1985) is based on a poem of five lines, five one-syllable words per line, which can be read or sung both horizontally and vertically. the basic melody’s pitches are derived by assigning notes on the basis of number of letters in each word. the melody is then developed and elaborated in five variations. downtown steel (1993) is an adaptation for the instruments of the downtown ensemble of an earlier piece, hot-rolled steel, written for gamelan son of lion, whose keyboards are made of that material. the structure of the piece is based on an english bell-ringing permutation known as grandsire doubles.

thousand year dreaming (1990) was commissioned by essential music and was written with the musicians on this recording, their particular strengths and inclinations, very much in mind. it grew out of an improvisatory piece, nautilus, which art baron, scott robinson and lockwood realised in 1989. they found that the sound of conch shell trumpets, didjeridu and frame drums really flowered in the resonant spaces they were using for the piece. lockwood started imagining the sonorities possible with four didjeridus, gongs, conches and trombones and frame drums, all shaped by the penetrating and sensuous edge of oboes and clarinets.

four sections emerged to which she gave the subtitles: breathing and dreaming; the chi stirs; floating in mid-air; in full bloom. while most of the work is fully scored, it contains two improvisations: a duet for john snyder (didjeridu) and scott robinson (frame drum), and a section for all four didjeridus. in performance, at this point the four players wander amongst the audience, exploring the space’s acoustics, playing into a listener s shoulder here, a foot there - sonic massage.

when close to completing the piece lockwood realised that its underlying, generative idea was the gradual awakening and release of sonic energy, energy which i think of as coiled and latent, in breathing and dreaming, but with an embedded power which will nourish when summoned.

floating world (1999) is an immersion in place and transience. the composer invited friends who work with environmental sounds themselves, and who have a strong sense of place, to make recordings for her in places of personal, spiritual significance to them, so it is a collaborative work. from their field recordings (edited but not processed), and other sounds lockwood wove the slowly shifting texture forming floating world.
