peter wright "red lion"

you can remove a kiwi from new zealand but you sure as hell can't remove new zealand from a kiwi. such is the case with christchurch transplant, peter wright. over the course of a decade, wright has etched his name in glass in the annals of drone-world superstardom. and while i'm not sure what that really means, the point is that when it comes to soaring dronescapes, few do it better than peter wright. he has helped pave the way with contemporaries such as birchville cat motel and double leopards, but clearly has his own distinct voice. with his past few albums, wright seems the logical successor to native kiwi, sound manipulator extraordinaire, roy montgomery.

"red lion" is wright's latest incarnation and, once again, pushes the boundaries of what he can do with his trademark 12 string danelectro to the absolute outer limits. he pushes the limits of simplicity without ever breaking. wright's albums are a thing of sheer, pure beauty, existing in a vacuum where nothing on the outside can tamper with their grace. even with his lofty intentions, "red lion" is immediately approachable and grabs the listener from the opening notes. as always, peter wright offers up something wholly infectious and undebatably magnificent.

peter wrightmagpie attack on the back road to albert town” seven inch single record

  • magpie attack on the back road to albert town (5:13)

  • magpie attack on the back road to albert town (perdition mix) (5:41)
april 2008 release ; ... a completely gorgeous pair of short-form solo guitar & percussion (windchimes, from the sound of things) pieces by peter wright ... the first begins with a light mix of plaintive, chiming figures, then leaps out of its skin into a wall of rectified guitar-wall majesty (listen to the sound-sample) before filtering back into a drone cloud ... the second offers a mix of sparse-note playing over a reverb haze w/rising bowed-metal noises before dissolving into a bed of field-recorded events ... highly recommended !!!

need for a crossing: a new new zealand vol. i

trapped in splendid isolation on the verdant backside of the planet, the new zealand scene has evolved into as vivid and unique a beast as any you're likely to hear. thanks to recent expeditions, you can now enjoy its multifarious tweets and warbles for yourself, as the intrepid folks at xeric present need for a crossing: a new new zealand, an introduction to the latest generation of antipodal soundsmiths.

birchville cat motel takes the lead with an epic blast in the cale/conrad/sabbath vein, while the gentler ruminations of stefan neville illuminate both pumice and blowfly saint. brief appearances by leighton craig and gfrenzy are, in turn, reverential and shambolic. while making nods to both greek rembetika and raw americana, greg malcolm is the model of multi-dexterity, playing three guitars simultaneously (he uses his feet). antony milton lends a gritty and aggressive bit of soundscaping, which segues into the collection's soaring, cloud-busting finale by the outstanding peter wright.

it's a strange and exotic menagerie, and a welcome chance for the rest of us to hear what's happening in the new new zealand. exquisitely packaged with a 24-page book monographing the new zealand streets and roads of yesteryear.
