2009 release ; 10th anniversary cd edition of this 2000 mille plateaux disc, documenting a february day spent in chris townsend’s big jesus burger studio in surrey hills, sydney, australia wherein paulpimmongough, christian fennesz, keith rowe, peterpitarehberg, and oren ambarchi set down to play & record some music ...

... seeing as this session is widely perceived as one of the “classicmodes in those processorially-challenged, early days of portable -computer-music improv (back when the out-of-the-box software solutions & readymade sound libraries were but myth) the re-arrival of this music in an archival format is an exciting prospect ; this digipack cd edition contains the entirety of the original cd release, with christian’s remix from the “maschinelle strategeme” compilation, and the quintet’s appearance at the “what is music?” festival (40+ minutes, all previously unreleased) ...

who would have thought a relaxed sunny afternoon, newfound friendships and some spur-of-the-moment would have resulted in what’s been described as ’one of the most compelling documents of both free improvisation and electronica (all music guide) ?

it’s the people involved in ’afternoon tea’ - originally released in 2000 on german label ritornell and now reissued on black truffle with a new master, bonus tracks and newly discovered live recordings after years of being out of print - that ensured it as more than a happy accident. the twin guitar presence of amm’s keith rowe and oren ambarchi and kindred spirits of the laptop - sydney’s pimmon, vienna’s christian fennesz and peter rehberg - made it a momentous day.

with all the players coming together during the 2000 what is music? festival, ’afternoon tea’ stands as a highpoint of the then-emerging intersection between powerbook performance and guitar improvisation. all subtlety, nuance and detail, it is a revelation of restraint. built on a steadying flow of burbling rhythm, the quintet slowly weave around each others’ sonics in layers to create a tonal palette immersive in its atmosphere and magnetic in its compulsion.

hindsight clearly reveals the heart of these pieces - important to note considering they were recorded at a time when laptop performance was an alien concept to many in experimental music, suffering controversy and backlash as well as an over-abundance of pale approaches from many who took it on as novelty as opposed to serious musical pursuit. those involved in the 'afternoon tea' session left their australian tour inspired, citing their merry time in the country eating, drinking and hanging out at the beach as well as their performances as a direct influence on their following work. many great live recordings were spawned from the tour itself including rehberg & bauer's 'passt', fennesz' 'live at revolver' (both on touch) and a collaboration between him and new zealand's rosy parlane (released on synaesthesia). additionally the seeds were sown for the fennesz classic 'endless summer' from 2001 (mego).

afternoon tea’ remains one of the quiet and real achievers for experimental music of the past decade.

remastered in may 2009 and with artwork designed by stephen o'malley.

thats right, they’re back!

after a hiatus of almost 9 years the legendary trio of christian fennesz, jim o’rourke and peter rehberg have returned with a new studio album. technically the first studio album as previous releases were edits of live performances.

they spent a week in studio gok sound, tokyo to lay down some stunning electronic works. whereas previously the emphasis was on a chaotic blend of found samples mangled through their mobile computing systems to create a humorous oddball sound, ‘in stereo’ implements a more wider instrumental palette of analogue & digital synthesis, guitar, piano, bass and percussion. what they do maintain is the ability to make a near psychedelic audio blend where its impossible to determine who does what.

released as cd digipack and gatefold double vinyl which features an extra slice of classic fenn o’berg magic beauty.

in stereo’ ... for you.

peter rehberg: work for gv 2004-2008 cd
release date: 31.10.2008
total time: 54:36

all audio made by peter rehberg 2004-2008. for the following gisèle vienne productions:

'i apologize' (2004)
'une belle enfant blonde' (2005)
'jerk' (2008)

text written and spoken by dennis cooperaction on ‘murder version’ by catherine robbe-grillet & jonathan capdevielle
mastered at piethopraxis, köln, june 2008
artwork by soma
photos by gisèle vienne

peter rehberg’s collaboration with the paris based puppeteer and choreographer, gisèle vienne began in 2001, with the production of the dacm piece ‘showroomdummies’, followed by ‘stereotypie’ in 2003.

in 2004, vienne started to direct under her own name and began to work on pieces collaborating on text with us author, dennis cooper. this cd is a document of selected audio parts of all gisèle vienne productions made between 2004 and 2008, except for the epic ‘kindertotenlieder’, whose audio material was presented on the various ktl releases in 2006 and 2007 (emego 084, emego 085).

the range here is vast from the upfront noise excess of the ‘i apologize(2004) tracks to the lonely synth passages which were used in ‘une belle enfant blonde(2005), and the sad coda used for ‘jerk’, which began as a radio play for radio france culture in 2007, before being adapted for stage in 2008.

the opening ‘murder version’ is a version of the recording ‘meurtre’ by catherine robbe-grillet & jonathan capdevielle, which was released as a single sided 12” vinyl in 2005 (ubeb 001), and is to be considered as a tribute to the alain robbe-grillet film ‘glissements progressifs du plaisir(1974).

although this material was intended for consumption in a theatrical setting, it has been edited with domestic use in mind ultimately representing that the grey zone where puppetry, literature, contemporary theatre & dance, visual art, and extreme computer music meet.

january 2009 release ; 4th album from stephen o’malley & peter rehberg’s kindertotenlieder...

this time around, the duo decamped to hoppy kamiyama’s gok sound studio, enlisting jim o’rourke for production duties as well as boris’ drummer atsuo (on the occasional thud / gong-blast) ; unsurprisingly this led to arguably the band’s most “accessible” outing, with the disparate digital-sound / guitar elements far less distant / misted than in prior outings ... hell, there’s even a regular “pulse” to some of this stuff (listen to the sound-sample) ; greatly removed from the beat-less vapor-trail of room-tone spectralia evident on the first three ...

a nice one, definitely ; can’t say for certain how i rank it amongst the shelf-load of ktl produkt until i give it a few more spins, but it fits the mood of this particularly cold / frost-bitten morning just fine ...

and how things have evolved. long awaited new album by the ongoing duo of stephen o’malley and peter rehberg.

ktl’s first full length release that is not commissioned work for theatre or film, showcases their approach to composition and structure as a highly active live band. whereas the ‘kindertotenlieder’ trilogy of 1, 2 and 3 were blurred washes of fog and noise polished in by ambient shine, iv  is a more direct and demanding beast, referencing such diverse projects as; volume era swans, mecca period cabaret voltaire, phase one wire, fushitsusha and this heat .....

developed and composed over the spring and summer of 2008, ktl brought the material to tokyo the following september and worked with jim o’rourke at the desk & controls, iv is a stunning new direction and great addition to both artists' already impressive canon.

the opening and shortest track, ‘paraug’ is a dark shadow of previous ktl sounds, with its blowtorch riffs and sub bass rumbles. this leads the way for the album's monster ‘paratrooper’. over 21 minutes of driving bass pulse interwoven with razor sharp guitar from o’malley & synth and organ blasts from rehberg. atsuo, from japanese top-rockers boris, glues it together with his arhythmic and punishing drumming. ‘wicked way’ is a breezy upbeat number, which if we were that way inclined would be the album's single. ‘benbbet’ on the other hand is whole different ball game: a distant guitar loop is joined by slamming no step beats and making way for a guitar riff to straddle all valleys and computer bass rattles. possibly ktl’s most detailed recording. ‘eternal winter’ is an exercise in black frozen resonant harmonics, whereas ‘natural trouble’ is a slowly evolving twister of a track which is both spontaneous and focused.

devastatingly beautiful four part follow up to the acclaimed debut cd recorded in a former abattoir in angers, as well as a 16th century manor in the extreme west of france.taking the blueprint that was laid out on the first record even further, with the ecstatic build up of ‘theme’, the near psychedelic ‘abattoir’, and closing with the twisted romanticism of the closing ‘snow 2’. an upgrade both artistically and emotionaly.

as with the first cd elements appeared in the finished version of the theatre piece ‘kindertotenlieder’ by gisele vienne and dennis cooper, which was premiered in brest, france, march 2007.

the legendary fenn o’berg are resurfacing eight years since their last performance. starting with this double cd reissue of their two albums; ‘the magic sound of...’ and ‘the return of...’, originally released in 1999 and 2002.

fenn o’berg (christian fennesz, jim o’rourke and peter rehberg) first hit the scene after a surprise appearance at the nickelsdorf festival in 1997. throughout 1998 and 1999 the trio toured extensively throughout austria, germany, belgium, france, italy, switzerland and spain, as well as shows in north america and japan. the highlights of these trips were presented on ‘the magic sound’. although they were not first group to utilise mainly mobile computing devices, they were the first to bring such a set up to venues that would not normally book or even be interested in such things. this resulted in some very polarised reactions from both audience and promoters alike. in many instances the group needed to ‘escape’ the city they played. in rome jim o’rourke was even given an acoustic guitar and more or less forced to play a short acoustic set before anyone could leave the building. despite all of this, there was a generally positive response, with some shows going down as local legend. however its worth considering that the technology at the tine didn’t offer the convenience of ‘plug in and play’ of current operating systems and applications. this of course led to set of recordings like no other. not only was the rule book ripped up but the tour book as well. each show became an improvised twisted journey through the various strands of electronic music where popular music sources (some more obvious than others) clashed with more academic tricks, but never sounding like being part of either.

by 2002, the groups live output was drastically reduced due to all three members schedules moving in different directions. only two performances were committed that year, and although the sound was more polished and one could even suggest that ‘they knew what they were doing’, their polarising effect was still there. one show was a sold out over enthusiastic centre pompidou in paris, and the other a miserable ‘count them on one hand’ turnout at a jazz club in vienna. edited highlights of these shows made up ‘the return of..

since then the trio has been on a constant pause. in october 2009 they will get together in tokyo to record a new studio album planned for early 2010 release. this reissue is repackaged with new artwork by tina frank, and contains two bonus tracks from the same period.

brilliant late 90s harsh digital collage from peter “pita” rehberg; in my mind the finest thing he’s done...

get out’ was the second full length album release by pita (aka peter rehberg). the folllow up to the award winning ‘seven tons for free’. its harsh use of available computing devices made it popular both in and outside electronic music circles of the time, especially the 11 minute anthem like 3rd track.

david keenan in his liner notes states that ‘get out’ “...stands as the first major musical laptop statement in the same way that jimi hendrix’s are you experienced album spoke for the most extended instrument-specific modes of the electric guitar three decades earlier.

well, here it is!

the moment you have all been waiting for.... the arrival of the debut album release by peterlicker. despite following on in that terrible tradition of butthole surfers and throbbing gristle of stupid band names, peterlicker (newly reformed after 20 years of inactivity) have, against all odds, come up with a serious slab of modern electronic rock.

nicht comprises of five well crafted selections recorded over the summer of 2010. having got their previous noise free fall style out of their system on the limited cassette ‘last slave(demego 013), the forgotten sons of the viennese underground have stepped, dare we say it, into almost accessible song like structures.

however, this is no lightweights wet dream, and still pulls some heavy punches. with the sequenced pulse of ‘always right’ sitting tight with the near poetictunnel 47053’, the real-rock stomper of ‘c-slide’, and not forgetting the manic psychedelia of ‘schleim’.

its a classic, basically.

august 2008 release ; continuous live set pitting pita’s digital sound processes / tools againt z’ev’s battery (npi) of exotic / barbaric percussion instruments ... some nasty overblown granular drones & resonant scrap-metal tangle abound ; one of z’ev’s better collaborations in his recent rejuvenative phase ...

z'ev vs pita cd
release date: 02.08.2008

1 continuous track split into 11 parts
total time: 35’46

acoustic/digital presentation recorded colchester arts centre 17.10.2006
final mix by z'ev london 01.2008
mastered at piethopraxis, köln 04.2008
design by soma

neither z’ev or pita need any introduction in these circles. these 2 heavyweights of experimental music have been associates for 2 decades. their creative collaboration came about after a meeting in 2004, which led to a monthly file exchange program in 2005.

instead of releasing results immediately it was decided to test the material in a live setting. performances were held in vienna and throughout the uk during 2006. ‘colchester’ is the final result of this process. a mesmerising and intense collision of z’ev’s acoustic percussion work and pita’s computer manipulation.

october 2007 release; a coruscating, corrosive (alliteration is fun...) collaborative work jointly composed/executed by marcus schmickler and peter “pita” rehberg.

it’s not all brimstone / hellfire throughout; the second piece devolves into subdued spectral smear after smacking us around for a bit with its fully-rectified stammer (which reminds of recent whitehouse more than anythings else...) ; other spots introduce jittery, off-axis grains that echo florian hecker’s recent work with wave geometry... but yes, for the most part this is the kind of ddd in-fighting that the two are known for in improvisational contexts (think marcus’ role in his duo w/thom lehn, peter in ktl...)

regardless of their modes of employ, these two are master frequency-range craftsman; both are in peak form throughout. highly recommended.

peter rehberg: computer
marcus schmickler: digital synthesizer, computer

peter rehberg (pita) and marcus schmickler have been two of the leaders in the electronic revolution of the last fifteen years, both on their own and in collaboration with others. one (snow mud rain) is the first duo cd from these two long-time friends and associates.

rehberg co-founded the massively influential mego label in 1994, and soon after began recording under the name pita. his first solo release, seven tons for free, came out in 1996 and was a kick in the teeth to all those who heard it, melding noise with techno in a blend the wire called ‘wilfully difficult’, a crucial formative statement for the then nascent eai world. since then, he’s continued in his ever-difficult path, both as a solo artist (get out, get down), and in groups such as ktl, rehberg & bauer, mimeo, and fenn’o’berg. recently, he’s been primarily focused on working with dance and performance pieces, with dacm, ktl and on his own, and now runs the editions mego label by himself.

schmickler has been involved with numerous projects over the past decade, including the seminal collective kontakta. while rooted in electronic music, schmickler also has a background in contemporary composition, having studied under prominent stockhausen collaborator johannes fritsch. as a solo artist, schmickler has created important works such as wabi sabi, sator rotas and param, as well as five cds under the name pluramon, including the just-released the monstrous surplus. he also has some long-standing electroacoustic collaborative projects, most notably with synth whiz thomas lehn, both in duo and in trio with keith rowe, and a gorgeous duo with pianist john tilbury, as documented on 2005’s variety. schmickler’s new solo release altars of science will be released later this month on the rehberg-run editions mego label.

rehberg and schmickler met up in march 2007, in schmickler’s piethopraxis studio in cologne, for two days of recordings. despite having barely worked together as a duo previously, the results were so successful that after two days, the record was basically completed. this is obvious when listening to the finished product, as a rawness and energy that hearkens back to the explosive power of early mego bursts from the speakers, further enhanced by the remarkable density and clarity of the recording.

fremdkorper

mosz 007 • 2006

if the sounds emanating from this disc seem alien, do not be alarmed. fremdkoerper, or "alienated bodies", is culled from a series of compositions peter rehberg constructed in collaboration with choreographer chris haring for a soundtrack to a live dance performance. you can't see the dancers, but you're invited into their alien world where bodies are absent, leaving behind shadows of their sweeping gestures, gentle flourishes, and violent peregrination. the music on this record is the infrastructure of the human body; at times it is pleasant, at others, horrifying.

since fremdkoerper was originally intended as a companion to the dance performance, it lacks the typical structure of his more conventional releases. epic drones lead into dramatic scores. moods change without warning. glitchy textures give way into thick, heavy tones. the transition from the subterranean rumble of opening track "mutisil" to the distorted raygun blast of "scream" is enough to reset your heartbeat (in fact, you can consider this press release fair warning). the hulking sine-wave drone of "1407" is quickly invaded by hungry extraterrestrials on "bite double." this is the record with which to test out your new stereo.

peter rehberg (b. 1968) is an electronic audio artist living and working in vienna, austria. he has given live performances, both solo and collaborative, throughout north and south america, europe, japan and australia. his resume of collaborators is as impressive as it is long, including luminaries such as sonic youth, amm, jim o'rourke, fennesz, zbigniew karkowski, kevin drumm, florian hecker, pan sonic, and keith rowe. rehberg took part in the 2nd göteborg art biennale (against all evens) curated by cm von hausswolff. fremdkoerper isn't rehberg’s first work with dancers. he's collaborated with tujiko noriko for two projects, as dacm, and is currently working with gisele vienne and dennis cooper on two new pieces.

1999 release ; domestic issue of the grob-labelqueue” disc, itself the debut from this keith rowe organized “orchestra” of electro-acoustic improvisors - an interchangable lineup (which differs from track to track here) involving peterpitarehberg, gert-jan prins, marcus schmickler, jérôme noetinger, cor fuhler, thomas lehn, christian fennesz, justin bennett, phil durrant, yannis kyriakides, and richard barrett, as recorded in germany & holland back in 1997 ...

these early meetings of the group have a certain “go for it” vibe that, imho, was smoothed out in later concerts (take it or leave it - personally i’m into the high percentage of “pile-ups” herein) ... but then again, aside from thom lehn (who sounds fantastic throughout - listen to the sound-sample for a few choice bleeps), i have a hard time making out most of the individual players, due to the number of redunant software & hardware processing & sampling algorithms being used at once throughout (remember, this was 1997 - i mean the g3 mac powerbooks could barely handle a single 16-bit 44.1k i/o stream w/ real-time processing ; much has changed in the intervening years) ...

while not the best representation of this particular group, it was most certainly the first disc of eai that many of us in the states got to hear, and such as it has a “time capsule” place in my heart ...

five years ago, 'faßt' declared itself to be entirely made up of the ‘mistakes’ and system errors of the digital processes rehberg & bauer had used in its making, thus finding themselves at the front end of an emerging tendency in new music that came to be known as ‘glitch’... frustratingly to those actively involved, because it freeze-framed the more critical dimension of such works into a genre that quickly became a gliché.

following faßt and ballt, and originated live on their tour of australia last year, passt completes rehberg & bauer's trilogy for touch; as such, it provides a window through which to monitor the progress (and atrophy) of this phase of development, now that the laptop seems as commonplace as the electric guitar.

visitors to last year’s sonar 2000 festival might have witnessed the spectacle of rehberg & bauer joining forces with merzbow, hecker, lopez, haswell et al under the sobriquet of the laptop orchestra – in itself a wake-up call, a performance wherein those with nothing to show you were being videoed, en masse, by those with nothing to watch.

a year on, those with nothing to say are busier than ever, producing cds whose distinguishing exteriors give listeners nothing to look at. in 2001, surface abstraction is easily output. passt therefore is an attempt to relocate this mode of music– making into something once again more progressive.

originated live on their tour of australia last year [what is music @ big_day out, sydney/revolver, melbourne and palladium, sydney], passt completes rehberg & bauer's trilogy for touch, following fa§t and ballt. 'revolver', tracks 7 to 13, is a recording of the gig itself in melbourne. the other tracks were edited from elements of the shows and then mastered. the venues where the recordings were made vary in character: palladium - sleazy, red light district, urban decay: revolver - classy, good p.a.: the olympic stadium [what is music festival] - held 70000 pissed aussies and featured red hot chilli peppers, nine inch nails etc. you can imagine... the introduction is provided by eric mitsak, some kind of local celeb, but now a cult figure and destined for, um, we are not quite sure. we are sure, however, that he'll crop up again.

august 2010 release ; 10th anniversary vinyl edition of this 2000 mille plateaux disc, documenting a february day spent in chris townsend’s big jesus burger studio in surrey hills, sydney, australia wherein paulpimmongough, christian fennesz, keith rowe, peterpitarehberg, and oren ambarchi set down to play & record some music ...

... seeing as this session is widely perceived as one of the “classicmodes in those processorially-challenged, early days of portable -computer-music improv (back when the out-of-the-box software solutions & readymade sound libraries were but myth) the re-arrival of this music in an archival format is an exciting prospect ; this deluxe, stoughton gatefold job contains the entirety of the original cd release, with christian’s remix from the “maschinelle strategeme” compilation, and the quintet’s appearance at the “what is music?” festival from that year (40+ minutes, all previously unreleased !!!)
weird forest press release...

ambarchi/fennesz/pimmon/rehberg/rowe afternoon tea 2xlp

who would have thought a relaxed sunny afternoon, newfound friendships and some spur-of-the-moment would have resulted in what's been described as 'one of the most compelling documents of both free improvisation and electronica' ?

it's the people involved in 'afternoon tea' - originally released in 2000 on german label ritornell and now available on vinyl for the first time with a new master, bonus tracks and newly discovered live recordings - that ensured it as more than a happy accident. the twin guitar presence of amm's keith rowe and oren ambarchi and kindred spirits of the laptop - sydney's pimmon, vienna's christian fennesz and peter rehberg - made it a momentous day.

with all the players coming together during the 2000 what is music? festival, 'afternoon tea' stands as a highpoint of the then-emerging intersection between powerbook performance and guitar improvisation. all subtlety, nuance and detail, it is a revelation of restraint. built on a steadying flow of burbling rhythm, the quintet slowly weave around each others' sonics in layers to create a tonal palette immersive in its atmosphere and magnetic in its compulsion.

hindsight clearly reveals the heart of these pieces - important to note considering they were recorded at a time when laptop performance was an alien concept to many in experimental music, suffering controversy and backlash as well as an over-abundance of pale approaches from many who took it on as novelty as opposed to serious musical pursuit. those involved in the 'afternoon tea' session left their australian tour inspired, citing their merry time in the country eating, drinking and hanging out at the beach as well as their performances as a direct influence on their following work.

'afternoon tea' remains one of the quiet and real achievers for experimental music of the past decade.

remastered in may 2009 with artwork designed by stephen o'malley.
