emerald cocoon (usa) #ec 007 ep
alone together (usa) #alone together 5 ep

pete swansonhigh time b/w trees” seven inch single record

  • high time

  • trees
january 2012 release ... fifth in the “alone togetherseries ; a pair of covers by pete swanson of dadamah (kim pieters, roy montgomery, peter stapleton, janine stagg) & gate (the dead c’s michael morley) ... both done in a strikingly reverent style (which is to say there’s a fair bit of overlap between pete’s production ethos & that of the entire kiwi underground) ...
emerald cocoon press release...

pete swanson
alone together #5 - high time / trees 7" [ec007]

pete swanson's love for the new zealand underground is no secret (rumour has it that he engineered the entire yellow swans new zealand tour of 2005 just so he could procure a copy of the pin group 'goes to town' 12"), so we were pleasantly unsurprised when pete turned in two re-imaginings of classic nz underground tracks as his contribution to the alone together series.

what surprised us greatly though was the form that they took: sparkling acoustic guitar, audible vocals, audible room tone – this was a pete swanson we'd never heard before. although his signature degradation systems are still in place (both sides end with a blown-out acoustic guitar emulating dirty-needled distortion), acoustic strings, four walls and a voice dominate, dislocated just enough to give you the sense that the world ends at your bedroom walls. this is a sound that shouldn't be unfamiliar to anyone previously baptised by 4-track channelled lathe transmissions from the bottom of the world. the dusty gems re-interpreted here are 'high time' by seminal christchurch kvltists dadamah (originally released as a 7" on the genius majora label circa '91) and 'trees' from gate's recent downer-techno masterpiece 'a republic of sadness', both are redolent of the darkest, coldest dunedin winter as imagined from half a world away.

edition of 300.

no label (usa) #ps vepa cs

pete swanson / scott goodwinvepa” cassette

  • untitled (1)

  • untitled (5)
october 2011 release ; ... one-off collaboration between pete swanson & scottoperatorgoodwin, hedging pete’s claustrophobicwall of crisp” with scott’s psycho-acoustics & poly-rhythmic clatter ...

... while a couple of numbers touch on the sort of industrial techno machinations you’d imagine in your mind’s eye when such a meeting-up is proposed, this is actually a rather nuanced & quite spooky, allowing the ghosts embedded in the duo’s machines free reign to act at will ... an excellent tape.
no label press release...

really proud of this one. vepa is a tape of pete swanson and i playing music together for the first time. for eight years we've been pushing each other to make the best music we can make by exchanging honest critique on each other's music and generally musing over expensive beers about why we even do this music thing at all.  usually we were too focused on our own projects to really jam out casually, but we made time for some sessions before pete left portland for nursing school at columbia.

for vepa we attempted to combine some approaches we've both been working on lately, namely pete's tape-saturated echo / loop processing and some of the rhythmic density we'd been exploring in operative. it pairs really nicely with pete's recent, excellent man with potential, but is much more destroyed and laconically paced.

pete swansonunlimited options” c20 cassette

  • unlimited options (1)

  • unlimited options (2)
june 2009 release ; second label-less tape from pete swanson, collecting his first solo material since a root strata cd-r from back in 2006 ...

recalling pita’s “get out,” the two-part piece here concerns a slowly rising chord progression put through a ringer of select distortion(s) ; first left to simmer (side a - listen to the sound-sample) then further processed into near-disintegration (side b) ... great stuff !!!

pete swansonghost o clock” c20 cassette

  • ghost o clock (1)

  • ghost o clock (2)
july 2010 release ; two pieces for guitar & voice from yellow swanspete swanson, “recorded between camping trips when everyone was asleep” ...

spry, anthemic work, oddly reminiscent of les rallizes denudes (pete’s done everything in his power to turn the distinct dry guitar/vocal tracks into a haze of time-based smear, rendering the elements all but indiscernable) albeit coming from more of a life-affirmative stance ...

excellent work, worthy of a weird forest-style gatefold 2lp housing ; for now we’ll take it on tape ...

no label (usa) #ps feelings cs

pete swansonfeelings in america” cassette

  • the fermata (16:34)

  • f.i.a. (8:19)
  • believers (6:30)
october 2011 release ; ... here’s pete’s “private” issue of the “feelings in america” lp, released originally in september 2010 on root strata & gone in a flash ... re: the music ::

... while the a-side blast continues the whole “skullflower meets maurizio bianchi” aspect of his recent solo work, i’m taken by the two segments where he dials back the excess just a little bit to let through a couple stray rays of sunshine & melody ...

... still think this is some of pete’s best solo material, with a certain loren-connors-meets-total lilt throughout ; very glad to have it available again in a pocket-friendly format ...
no label press release...

despite asserting that he "quit music in 2001 .. but kept recording in his basement because it helped him avoid interacting with others", pete swanson has been a very busy guy. as half of (the now defunct) yellow swans for most of the decade, swanson somehow found the time to collaborate with scores of folks (see badgerlore, maggoted, and sarin smoke for starters) while also slowly carving out his own bleak vision of loner sound.

'feelings in america' is the most recent salvo from swanson, and it's as blown out and muddy as you would expect from a damp portland basement. three tracks of guitar & vocals lost in a sea of white hot electronic overload that, according to swanson, "sounds exactly like his old band, but funnier in a depressing sort of way."

pete swansonmr. entertainment” c20 cassette

  • untitled (1)

  • untitled (2)
february 2010 release ; third in this series of label-free self-released tapes from yellow swanspete swanson ... here we get a rather clean & (comparably, at least to the gussied-up mud of both “denim life” & “unlimited options”) concise bit of shoe-gauze (replete with almost discernable vocals !!!) ... then a side of throbbing sub-bass pulse coated in grinding electronic ooze ...
no label press release...

got a new tape that's pretty much done called "mr. entertainment"  side a is another real blasted guitar/tape/electronics blur..  side b is a real odd attempt at ripping off gas from 2008 ..  only i'm just using tape, an envelope filter and a contact mic ..  totally unimpressive and extremely ...  degraded .... no edition number, but it'll probably be less than 80 ..

pete swansondenim life” c20 cassette

  • denim life (1)

  • denim life (2)
january 2009 release ; first in a pair of solo tapes from (d) yellow swanspete swanson, dealing in ultra gain-destroyed variants on dys’ cyclic emancipation(s) ...

buried beneath the wall of tape-compression and pedal-fuzz sounds like suicide-lineagego-go” beat overlaid with waves of pulverized guitar scraggle & pete’s banshee-wail vocals ; played loud it pretty much sucks the air right out of any room it’s played in, but it works even at quieter settings as something of a hymnal ...

a good omen for things to come re: pete’s solo career ...

july 2010 release ; burnin’ pair of tape-saturated synth pieces from yellow swanspete swanson, nestled halfway between a kind of shoegaze melodicism & harsh noise wail ...

some great classicist electronic flourish (the tail-end of the a-side wouldn’t be out of place on an early fylkingen compilation) & the continuous 70bpm wallop pounds the folly of your existence into the dirt ...

great stuff !!!

shelter press (france) #sp 001 lp

rene hell / pete swansonwaiting for the ladies” long playing record

  • pete swanson - self help (15:10)

  • rene hell - glass & voice, in motion (16:04)

    walking in tune
    bending (voice)
    glass (coke)
january 2012 release ; ... no, you’re not seeing double, this is an exact (and i do mean exact, right down to the pressing plant !!!) reissue of the august 2010tour split” lp from jeffrene hellwitscher & pete swanson, offering a side of new music by each, never available in any other way ...

pete storms the beaches first with a clattery, rising wall of rectified pulse-wave fizz & distant banshee vocals, dropping out for several pregnant pauses of almost bbc radiophonic workshop-esque clatter shapes ... the flip offers a trilogy of pieces from jeff ; the first recorded evidence of his recent stint in austria, subtexted “with a glass full of coke and the plastic sniper moon, bend the street taught and walk along in tune” ... each is concerned with a correlated aggregate of chiming, interlocking synth patterns, with a gnarly filtered square-wave framing” the various arpeggiations into endlessly morphing emotive shapes ...

a great record, largely unavailable in its original iteration (we definitely left a few of you hanging back then ; now’s your chance) ... highly recommended !!!

shelter press #001 / pete swanson & rene hell waiting for the ladies

 4 tracks / 31:04 min / 12 inches / 33 rpm / 160grm

520 copies / 2012 / art by rene hell

jeff witscher's followup to the acclaimed "porcelain opera" lp on type finds him taking things even further out from the kosmiche tag he's had pushed on him. the rh side is way more cyberpunk meandering no logic digital musichi-fi goaning landscapes. the pete swanson side is more synth and tape exploration that's his most clean work to date.  layers of primitive wave forms and gunked processing congeal into some sort of open 60s classical synth and shoegaze influenced song-like form.  less oppression, more confusion.

released for the swanson/hell august 2010 tour.

three lobed recordings (usa) #tlr 084 cd

pete swansoni don’t rock at all” compact disc

  • know when to say wha? (10:08)
  • cocktail champion (8:06)
  • stuff it (9:29)
august 2011 release ; lovely new set of pieces from yellow swanspete swanson, consisting of “electric guitar recorded live to 2-tracks dec. 2010 at the house on the edge of the forest, estacada, or” ...

... otherwise issued solely as a “direct mail order bonus” for the already o/pnot the space you know, but between them” box on three lobed, our copies come directly from pete, who self-described this set as “a 30 minute long cd along the lines of the ghost o clock tape but a bit more epic and pastoral” ...

... some of the most cleanly-recorded music pete has done in aeons (this is a far cry from the wasted, tape-destroyed blur of “unlimited options” ; listen to the sound-sample for a good chunk of the discs’s interim track) ; it’s an extremely well-donesunday morningvariant to his more “friday nightmaterials as of recent & shouldn’t be slept on, upon, or within a decent proximity ... highly recommended !!!

pete swanson - i don't rock at all (three lobed #tlr-084)

pete swanson sat down in the final days of 2010 in an isolated oregon cabin to record the solo guitar tracks that comprise "i don't rock at all." each of these album's three tracks can be used by the listener as a sort of talisman against fishers from the outside (or whatever your own personal demons may be).
