pelt - heraldic beast dbl lp (eclipse, 2006)

"intense 2 lp survey of pelt geography around the turn of the century, compiling live recordings the band issued on cdrs in tiny editions or on comps plus some unreleased material. combines the most all-out electric attacks pelt's ever deigned to release, plus some of the growling drone float that preceded/coincided with the band's jump into acoustic material. off the hook gatefold packaging that maybe offers hints of sources, etc. "

this dbl lp set is sure to blow some minds - especially those who have come to know pelt in the past 2-3 years. these early recordings (1998-2003) are heavy and sure to please those who have been waiting patiently for this. the packaging is incredible, too - with beautiful artwork and a very sturdy gatefold sleeve. dig it.

pelta stone for angus maclise” long playing record

  • a stone for angus maclise (1) (21:00)

  • a stone for angus maclise (2) (20:45)
december 2008 release (which we had for a blip way back when ; now in stock in number) ; grey-area “no label” release from patrick best (vocals, harmonium), mikel dimmick (harmonium), and mike gangloff (singing bowls, gong, esraj) ’s pelt, featuring a long, side-split recording made during march of 2007 in tribute to the methedrine cardinal himself, angus maclise ...

... an odd tactic, to handle this in such a hands-off matter, especially as this trumps a great deal of the band’s recent vhf-label output ; the kinds of melting twin-harmonium pump-action & modal vocal swirl the trio get up to herein (esp. the second half) are straight out of the la monte young / pandit pran nath playbook (of which these guys are clearly avid readers) ...

simple, no-frills lp, with a silver metallic sticker on the front & a small dual-sided insert ...

may 2008 release ; domestic, small-run tequila sunrisa version of the more globally marketed 2cd on beautiful happiness (infinitely nicer-looking / feeling, i should add ...) - contains a full-length collaborative disc, “dr. ragtime and his pals,” with guest-spots from glenn jones (sounding particularly sprightly), micah “blue” smaldone, and pelt’s mike gangloff & nathan bowles ... this is aided & abetted by the (let’s see ...) third reissue of the excellent “self-titledjack-set (cd on archive, initially, followed by the same-looking vinyl lp on tequila sunrise here), of which i had this to say ::

november 2006 jack rose set - as jack sheds his fahey-worshipping skin, i find myself getting more and more amped about each subsequent release - first it was the change-ringing 7” on tequila sunrise and now this one; recorded davey graham style in someone’s house / in concert / at home in september 2006 (for the most part.)

this is prime material; jack herein working a slide/travis combo that’s ridiculously solid - his right right-hand timing is so on right now...although there are a few detours into more free-form styles (check the sound-sample of a piece delving into brij bhusan kabra territory - modal slide excursions over a tanpura-like tonal bed - at least at the end there) that make the record for me...

extremely good deal for such a handsome package (both discs enveloped in a not-too-un-mego-like gatefold folio-dealie ...) - which isn’t to slight the music - some of my favorite work of jack’s together in a handy, reference-able tome ... highly recommended !!!

ts-5006/5007 jack rose - dr. ragtime and his pals/self-titled 2cd

domestic version of jack rose’s new full length, ‘dr. ragtime and his pals’, coupled with a reissue of last years ‘self-titled’ cd/lp housed in a custom designed and fabricated off-set printed card cover with j-card style obi. limited edition of 1000.

the appalachian trail runs 2175 miles south from mount katahdin in maine to springer mountain in georgia, though there are those who want to stretch it further, into alabama, because the mountains go there. why not extend it? trails are made for that. but there's another appalachian trail, too - one that goes through time, extending from unfinished studios in williamsburg, ny, winding down the grooves of ancient 78's to the 1920's or even earlier, past stephen foster's wet dream to a place beyond the compass of change.

if you're hiking on *that* trail, you're likely to run into a lot of post-grad parsifals with inscrutable hair and de-tuned banjos - these days, you can't swing a cat around without hitting one! but if you're lucky, you might stumble across a clearing somewhere south of lily dale, where revolutionists stop for orangeade and dr. ragtime hangs out with his pals. if you ask him politely, he might offer you a taste of his elixir - made from codeine, sarsaparilla, and goat-gland extract - guaranteed to restore memories that never were. and if you're quiet, he might let you stay and listen to the music: ethiopian novelties, characteristic marches and parlor favorites - bittersweet slices of methodist pie, familiar tunes, at least in those sections where the square dance has not yet been supplanted by the fox-trot.

and if you have a couple of dimes to rub together in your pocket, you'll want to purchase his newest, electrically-recorded phonograph recording, entitled "doctor ragtime and his pals." the doctor, who hitherto has recorded only on his own, is joined here by micah blue smaldone (who has been compared to both tiny tim and kierkegaard), glenn jones (of cul de sac, last seen around these parts urging college students to contemplate the prospect of their own death on a balmy september evening), michael gangloff (late of pelt and the black twig pickers), nathan bowles (also of the black twig pickers as well as the spiral joy band) and the mysterious harmonica dan (from pennsauken, new jersey by way of ethereal caminos).

this release is conjoined with a recording by jack rose, the mike morgan of the american minimalist neo-primitive sub-underground. this recording, entitled "jack rose" - previously available to the buying public only in severely limited forms - is here presented as a bonus to the consumer and perhaps as an act of folly for the producer.

vhf#90 pelt (untitled) cd

(untitled) is a devastating set of almost pure white light from the newly upgraded pelt lineup. the intense drone music on (untitled) represents a return to "sonic-ism" for the quartet of jack rose, mike gangloff, patrick best, and mikel dimmick. like pelt's 2003 effort pearls from the river, (untitled) is an all-acoustic affair. on (untitled) the group concentrates on producing dense clouds of overtones from guitar, cello, tibetan bowls, gongs, sruti, and esraj. track 1 is an overpowering straight line ala the theatre of eternal music, an atmosphere of stasis with gong and bowl flickering subtly over the massive track bed. track 2 is a 32 minute epic that begins with the soft strains of jack rose's 12 string, picks up dueling cello and esraj and gradually builds in intensity with the sounds of gongs and other unusual percussion. track 3 is the live staple "sundogs," where rose's weissenborn lap guitar and gangloff's resonator guitar produce a stream of unearthly high, singing overtones in an uncanny acoustic impression of electric feedback. the final track is an epilogue of best's keening cello, again ignoring the usual technique associated with the instrument in the pursuit of pure weirdness. housed in card folio printed by stumptown.

peltpearls from the river” compact disc

  • up the north fork (8:03)
  • pearls from the river (20:20)
  • road to catawba (15:06)
vhf press release...
vhf#76 pelt pearls from the river cd

first new music in a couple of years from the trio, focusing entirely on their acoustic side. recorded in a single march 2003 session in va by mikel dimmick, this is a superb distillation of their recent musical forays (both alone and together). "up the north fork" is a trio for banjo, baritone banjo, and cello - after the snakey bowed introduction, the fast thwacking of the banjos and forcefully strummed cello take over and whip up a storm. the other two tracks are lengthy ragas (one in c, one in d) with the virtuosic modal guitar of jack rose front and center. "pearls from the river" features jack on 12 string, dueling with mike gangloff on esraj. pat best's thick, sonorous double bass bowing anchors the duet between the lightning thrumming/plucking of jack's guitar and mike's arcing, sharply bowed half-time melody. "road to catawba" has jack on 6 string, with mike moving to tamboura, for a full exploration of the d lydian mode. best's bass is again the foundation, with whistling overtones rising from his bow over the low drone. liner notes by byron coley.

join pelt in celebrating the ecstatic joy that results from refusing to accept the alleged primacy of shit-culture. it does not exist if we will not believe in it. and we must refuse it on all levels always. the proof of its surrender is at hand. yr hand. right now, motherfucker!” - byron coley

vhf#25 pelt brown cyclopaedia cd

debut long player by the "classic" pelt trio. this out-of-nowhere blast of creativity followed a couple of 7"s that were in a more "rock" style and was quite a revelation at the time (it's still good for listening, of course). brown cyclopaedia was originally issued as a dbl lp in mid-1995 on the band's own radioactive rat label (the precursor to klang). the pressing was limited to 300 and most copies were given away, so it basically disappeared on release. we offered to put it on cd to keep it available. the cd features the complete program of both lp's, along with great new watercolor artwork by christina carter (as opposed to the non-art of the lp version). the sound on the cd is much improved - the lp sounded like it was pressed on recycled racquetballs. the music features a lot of drifting but edgy stuff, mainly guitar oriented but with some unusual vocal, horn, etc touches that they turned more fully towards on the releases that followed. i guess this takes a lot of cues from the dead c/xpressway scene but i think has them beat in the atmosphere department.
