for waiting, for chasing was originally issued in a limited pressing by the stefan németh (radian) curated mosz label in 2006. this is the first time it is being made widely available in north america and elsewhere, and also the first time it is being issued on the vinyl lp format.

as mosz eloquently stated at the time of release :

...it is not about the process or the media, which have been used. it is about how elements and structures are put in a detailed relation to each other, ending up in a slow-moving, breathing organism. filaments of percussive elements condense to polyrhythmic elements, layers of sound, instruments and field recordings merge to build up a mystic parallel, not so much fictional world.

perhaps the most skeletal and minimal of all of the works in the pan•american canon, it may also be the most compelling.

this is arguably mark’s most varied set yet, with themes ranging from the seefeel-esque “for aiming at the stars” & the muted thump / haze of “in a letter to h.g. wells, 1932” (surely indebted to wolfgang “gas” voigt’s more laminar transgressions - listen to the sound-sample) to the cycling six-string bass figures & ambient wash more commonly associated with his prior outfit ... top-notch work !!!

mark nelson's third pan•american album is patiently assertive, carefully balanced between structure and impulse. each electronic dot, pulse or tone deliberately emerges from silence. sonic light and shadow come from this careful placement, with subtle references to dub, house and minimalism.

at a time when so much music fixates on process at the expense of the final product, the music on the river made no sound creates its own space and earns its keep.

mark nelson has been recording and trading tapes under the name pan•american for some time now. during the summer of 1997, he started recording a full length album for kranky at home and at sound of music studios in richmond, virginia.

mark's contributions to labradford as the trio's guitarist and singer, might prepare the listener somewhat for the debut pan•american album. those lucky enough to be in contact with the independent taping community (which is the last, true underground left) and in possession of earlier pan•american cassettes may be somewhat forewarned. but who could have expected what has emerged from months of sampling, recording, and mixing?
