arbor (usa) #arbor 145 lp

cloaked light / pale blue skysplit” long playing record

  • cloaked light - clear of,

  • pale blue sky - someday
  • pale blue sky - sometime
june 2010 release ; split one (right down the middle) with peter friel’s cloaked light resisting development throughout a side-long band-pass filtered held-fourth (i admire his adherence to keeping things simple & textural) & mike pollard’s pale blue sky introducing an open-ended major-key floater, later emphasising the 9th for extra added emotional whoomph ...

the minimal, grey-noise design elements works quite well given the included sonics, with arbor even going asfaras including a printed inner-sleeve with a just-trapezoidal array on each side ...

arbor 145 cloaked light / pale blue sky split 12"ep

working together, but differently. clear of, shows cloaked light working within a new mode; an expanded temporal sensitivity through field recording and discrete static chordsslow movement- revealing growth and decay at the subtlest thresholds; disappearing music with a heavy presence, a shifting sense of space, not in the room, but of the room.

pale blue sky’s someday, sometime approaches a similar expansion of perception and unobscuring blur. through tape manipulation, the inner workings of tonal relationships are placed under focus; extending time to reveal new moments; widening the view.  distorting to understand; a reorienting pause. originally conceived to coincide with the cloaked light / pale blue sky california tour with pedestrian deposit, infinite body, earn, and mirror to mirror in january 2010; a testament to a common point and it’s different trajectoriesapproaching the possibility.

mastered by pete swanson; cut at 45 rpm.
in an edition of 400 copies with glossy jackets and inner sleeves.

arbor (usa) #arbor 137 lp

pale blue skyshades of grey” long playing record

  • fleece
  • luring movement

  • green tint
  • interlude (drift)
  • attempt
february 2010 release ; debut lp from mike pollard’s new post-treetops project pale blue sky ...

five (easy) pieces that jostle & flow, radiating clean electronic warmth ... much like the “ambientinterludes on my bloody valentine’s “loveless” ; yet somehow even more soporific ... very nice.

arbor 137 pale blue sky shades of grey 12” ep

pale blue sky is the new project from mike pollard (formerly treetops)shades of grey is the project’s genesis; a long considered transition uniting the organic drone-work of the former project with compositional structures. the recordings embody a delicate sense of distance; staring out at the moving landscape obscured by the mediation of the window. through blurred fidelity the origin of melody is placed under microscopic inquiry; an exploration into the moment of tonal interaction. pale blue sky utilizes repetition and non-linear movements, attempting to reconcile simplicity, form, and sentiment through modes of difference. placing focus on spatial concerns, as well as emotive potential, the five songs contained within are each different embodiments of the possibility of the transformative decay of remembrance. an ephemeral glimpse; the moment has already passed. for quiet, distanced listening.

in an edition of 400 copies with full color glossy jackets, printed inner sleeves, and printed labels.

bryter laytertwo lenses” long playing record

  • your verdant skin
  • first light
  • understanding interdependence
  • the shadow of your smile

  • aspect
  • second light
  • closing
december 2011 release ; ... long-awaited debut album (after a micro-run tape back in 2009) by the duo of joe raglani & arbor’s mike pollard, working under the spectre of nick drake ...

... placid, cycling, filtered chord shapes & syncopated sequences are the order-of-the-day here, with both working in a strikingly melodic mould vastly more “approachable” than anything either have laid to tape as of yet ; it’s nice to hear these guys actively embracing harmony and/or “traditionalsong form(s) in such a clear way, as both clearly have the inventiveness & compositional chops to make it work ... a very nice record.

sod93 bryter layter: “two lenses” lp

comprised of joseph raglani (kranky) and mike pollard (arbor), bryter layter is a collaborative unit that focuses on the lyrical faculties of analog synthesis. for the most part, these recordings find the pair eschewing the at-times unfocused, long-form drone techniques that have become fixtures in the scene in favor of short, melodic compositions that are strikingly rich in detail. listeners familiar with the oeuvres of raglani and pollard will find much to love here. as the pillow-soft, analog tone-clouds that characterize the latter’s work as pale blue sky find themselves wed to the highly structured, dynamic arrangements that one associates with the former’s solo output.”two lenses” is rich and cinematic, rife with evocative motifs which ebb and flow from one piece to the next creating, over the course of the album, a masterfully composed, unified whole.

your verdant skin,” the opening salvo, brings to mind popul vuh’s work for werner herzog at its most grandiose, as waves of rising, symphonic tones surge and dissolve, carrying us along with them. “first light,” with its startlingly catchy syncopated rhythms, illustrates perfectly those qualities which set bryter layter apart from their synthesist contemporaries, with raglani and pollard channeling wistful, sun-washed pop sensibilities into the cold facades of their machines.

recorded live and meticulously arranged by raglani at his home studio, and mastered by greg davis to supreme effect, “two lenses” builds upon and extends the qualities established on the pair’s 2009 cassette release “imprinted season” in every way. their work here runs the gamut from maudlin and picturesque to profoundly hopeful always with an eye towards the beautiful.
