the aao (or aa-komune) was first set up in a single-family house on the praterstraße in vienna in 1970 by otto muehl, running semi-contiguously in locations throughout vienna, krefeld, heidelberg, geneva, and berlin until muehl’s imprisonment in 1991 ... experiments in “free sexuality”, “communal economy”, “common production”, and “self-presentation” were carried out, and the group did all they could to distance themselves from the so-called “hippy communes” ; they kept their heads shaved & adhered strictly to muehl’s (often oversimplified) authoritarian rules, leading to its brandishing as a “psychosect” ...
the recordings herein date from 5 years into the commune’s lifespan, consisting of a selection of the vienna group’s communal music-making sessions ; while someone’s pounding away at a piano in an almost schlager-esque style, various members come forward with testimonials & stream-of-consciousness rants, often climaxing in a fury of screaming and breakdowns ; all done in various states of undress, natch ... needless to say it’s at once painful to listen to & wholly engrossing ; offering an incredible insight into the group’s mind-set ...
this is a to-the-letter repro of the original lp ; included is a booklet (translated from the native german into english & french) explaining the group’s manifesto, along with a complete transcription / lyric-sheet ... even the casual fan / follower of vienna aktionism & the mid-70s free-wheeling euro-commune spec will see this as the seminal document is is ; highly recommended !!! |

"musikalische selbstdarstellungen 1974/75". crazy group-therapy sessions, improvised music with different commune members coming forward and 'singing' about their parents, free-sexuality, mister jealousy, and how two-people-relationships kill sex-life, etc.. record comes in fullcolour cover (reprint of the original), stamped label, plus 10-page a4 booklet with transcription of all text in english, german and french.
