the asian improvisation of the present, a connection between singapore, tokyo and hong kong. a vivid 71-minute performance moving back and forth between turbulence and stillness. "book from hell" is the denomination of the concert, zai kuning organized on september 2008 in singapore. cd title is used as it is and also cd cover is the poster of "book from hell" concert, zai designed. this is asian improvisation surely. according to the reason, not only each musician come from asian bloc but also what the sound should be or time perception, this music is different from western improvisation. glue yourself to your listening on 71 minutes. the you will become a feeling of catharsis !

this is the collaborative masterpiece of the 3-piece unit, sim (oshima teruyuki on guitar and composition, ootani yoshio on computer, electronics, etc, and uemura masahiro on drums) and otomo yoshihide (turntables, self-made synthesizer). the noise of otomo sharply incises the unique sound of sim, where uemura’s controlled roaring drumming sets an main axis on oshima’s precise rhythmical composition, oshima’s the chord cuttings beats minimally and the electronics of ootani give extreme voltage.

both of their mastering of some tunes procedure of which once made back into analogue and the exquisite jacket cover seem to simbolize this distinct sound.

otomo & samm bennett’s contributions throughout add considerable heft to the proceedings (listen to the sound-sample for poss. the most outright “zonked” passage of the record), but for the most part i’m reminded of the careening intro/outro music of any number of anime programs ...

otomo yoshihidemodulation with 2 electric guitars and 2 amplifiers” compact disc

  • modulation with 2 electric guitars and 2 amplifiers (40:16)
december 2007 release; a very noisy / ear-opening one-off from otomo, recorded channeling his inner “metal machine music” on may 12th, 2007 in concert in the chapel of hiroshima’s oriental hotel...

as soon as the piece kicks in (the first 3 minutes are something of a clarion call as otomo fine-tunes his twin-guitar/amp array) an amazing set of difference-tones & assorted psycho-acoustic interference begin to creep out of the monolithic feedback-drone ... not at all dis-similar to the sort of “inside-your-head” effects channeled by maryanne amacher, or phill niblock’s precise frequency-measurements (albeit, done on the fly...)

great stuff; a new direction from otomo hitherto undocumented... besides, you know i’m going to champion any record that comes with a disclaimer (below) ...

this is otomo yoshihide's second guitar solo release on doubtmusic.  the concept of this work, however, is completely different from that of the first. here, feedback sound issues from two amplifiers, each connected to one of two guitars placed on a tabletop.  due to this stereo effect,  the feedback mutually interferes, producing beatlike fluctuations, creating black holes into which the sound suddenly disappears, sounding completely different depending on the position of the ears, creating the illusion that the sound is coming from only one speaker when the listener is in certain locations, and so on, thus turning into truly interactive music.  because these effects cannot be obtained unless the sound coming from the two amps mutually interferes, we recommend listening without earphones or headphones, through speakers, with the sound as loud as conditions allow.  depending on the positions of the speakers, the interference effect and sound image will surely differ as well.

*warning: to obtain the desired results, please listen through speakers at the highest volume possible.  please note, however, that otomo yoshihide and doubtmusic will accept no responsibility whatsoever for any resulting hearing loss.

one of the more approachable entries into otomo’s vast, vast canon; were it not for sachiko’s incessant 8-16k tweetering throughout, i could almost mistake some of this for 60s/70s film music; which is to say the band stay inside the reigns for the majority of the session(s)...

ah... this one takes me back...

ground-zero were of course otomo yoshihide’s long-running free-jazz/improv/noise/psych unit, blazing something of a singular path between august 1990 & march 1998 featuring a rotating lineup that, over the years, included such heavyweights as kato hideki, makigami koichi, masahiro uemura, yamatsuka/yamantaka eye, hirose junji , tony buck, tenko, ryoji hojito, mick harris, hoppy kamiyama, sei’chi yamamoto, samm bennett, kazuhisa uchihashi, mitsuru nasuno, masaki shimizu, yasuhuro yoshigaki, sachiko m, masahiko okura, and kazunao nagata.

this early concert from february 1992 (recorded @ 20000v in tokyo) features otomo, hirose junji, kato hideki, uemura masahiro, and yamantaka eye; sonically much closer to the raw blat of the boredoms than anything you’d associate with otomo these days - at this stage he was still playing a sawed-off guitar with a metal pipe and turntables (often scratching/jump-cutting all over distorted hip-hop beats & rock guitar - listen to the sound-clip - closer to something like john oswald’s plunderphonics) with eye caterwauling all over the place, and the rest of the band following suit with disjointed rhythmic jabs & all kinds of free-scream gestures...

two studio pieces at the end of the disc, in all of their damaged-fidelity glory, rule. an excellent disc, especially great for the boredoms fan or anyone with a soft-spot for otomo’s noisier excursions...

this cd includes unissued live performances and studio recordings (12, 13) right after otomo formed ground-zero. this happened before the release of their first album, called "ground-zero" (god mountain). their playing is in the rough and sound quality is not quite best, but this materials should be kept a record of their intence performances of earlier ground-zero for future ages. this is remembrance of fresh / poisonous earlier ground-zero after interval of 15 years.

composed by otomo (1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 11), hirose & eye (4), kato & eye (5), otomo & eye (12), all members (7,8,10,13)

sachiko m / toshimaru nakamura / otomo yoshihidegood morning good night” double compact disc set

  • good morning (30:12)
  • good afternoon (7:59)

  • good evening (25:34)
  • good night (37:20)
erstwhile press release...
free improvisation has rarely seen significant new movements as influential as the small group of tokyo musicians once labeled as "onkyo". sachiko m, toshimaru nakamura and otomo yoshihide are three of the scene's driving forces (along with taku sugimoto), and on good morning good night are documented together as a trio for the first time.

sachiko m is best known for her innovative use of the sampler, extracting pure, piercing sine waves from the device's built-in test tones and forging an original and much-imitated sound. more recently, she has expanded her palette through the use of contact mikes. sachiko has worked extensively as a solo artist, as well as in groups such as cosmos, filament, and i.s.o., and in duo with toshimaru nakamura. she won the 2003 prix ars electronica, along with ami yoshida and utah kawasaki, and also founded and runs the groundbreaking amoebic label.

since 1998, toshimaru nakamura has been exploring the possibilities of his "no-input mixing board" in contexts ranging from solo to collaborations with keith rowe, günter müller, sachiko m, andrea neumann, and the duo project repeat (with drummer jason kahn). nakamura was a prominent presence throughout the amplify 2002 box set, appearing on five of the seven cds, and will be recording the much-awaited follow up to the highly acclaimed weather sky cd with keith rowe later this year.

otomo yoshihide's prolific career has been unified by a primary objective: the investigation of the nature of sound from every conceivable angle. in the mid-90's, he explored the limits of sample-based turntablism, predominantly through his band ground zero, as well as in collaborations with christian marclay and yamatsuka eye. over the last few years, otomo has become increasingly interested in minimal wave-based electronics, as heard in his filament, i.s.o, cathode and anode projects. other projects which he is currently involved in include his new jazz quintet, as well as an ongoing duo project with martin tétreault. otomo has also composed many soundtracks for movies, and has written numerous articles and essays for japanese music publications.

while these three musicians have worked together in countless configurations in recent years, good morning good night is their first meeting as a trio. recorded in august of 2003, the double cd contains essentially the full recording sessions, four tracks totaling over 100 minutes. good morning good night is a very conscious step in a new direction, an attempt to create a "vertical" music (as opposed to most music, which moves in a linear, horizontal plane). the pointillistic placement of sounds by these three masters of delicacy results in a music that exists somewhere between foreground and background listening. friederike paetzold's design is inspired by james turrell's work, and features four different covers for the four tracks/times of day, which the listener can fold according to their preference.

günter müller: ipod, minidisc, selected percussion, electronics
otomo yoshihide: electric guitar, turntables, electronics

günter müller and otomo yoshihide are deeply respected musicians who have known each other for more than a decade. time travel documents their initial meeting as a duo.

swiss native günter müller utilizes a range of electronic devices, influenced by his roots as a percussionist. he's been involved with numerous projects and other musicians over the past two decades, including long-term musical relationships with jim o'rourke, voice crack, taku sugimoto and erikm. müller has released many records on his own label, for 4 ears, including his recent solo debut, eight landscapes. time travel is his fourth project for erstwhile, following the world turned upside down, la voyelle liquide, and poire_z +. müller is the ultimate collaborator, relinquishing virtually any claim on a signature sound in an attempt to maximize the potential of each individual project.

otomo yoshihide's prolific career has been unified by a primary objective: the investigation of the nature of sound from every conceivable angle. in the mid-90's, he explored the limits of sample-based turntablism, primarily through his band ground zero, as well as in collaborations with christian marclay and yamatsuka eye. over the last few years, otomo has become increasingly interested in minimal wave-based electronics, as heard in his filament, i.s.o, cathode and anode projects. other projects which he is currently involved in include his new jazz quintet, as well as an ongoing duo project with martin tì©treault. otomo has also composed many soundtracks for movies, and has written numerous articles and essays for japanese music publications.

müller and otomo first met in matsushima, japan in 1989 at a show müller was doing in an abandoned quarry with his band nachtluft. otomo had driven four hours from tokyo to see the performance, and afterwards they met for the first time. they've since collaborated in a handful of contexts, most notably the filament 2 record on for 4 ears, with the trio of müller, otomo and sachiko m. time travel was recorded in october 2002, just before the amplify 2002 festival, and marked their first meeting as a duo. time travel consists of seven focused, distinct pieces, which combine to create a unique sense of time, slowly but constantly developing and filled with intricate details. friederike paetzold's gorgeous design is based on vector distortions of the world time zone map evoking the effects of frequent flying.

günter müller: minidiscs, selected percussion, electronics

erik m: minidiscs, sampler, fx
otomo yoshihide: turntables, guitar, electronics (on 1)
sachiko m: sampler with sine wave (on 2)
christian marclay: turntables (on 3)

poire_z, the quartet of günter müller, voice crack and erikm, has been performing together since december 1998. in the summer of 2000, they began a series of performances which included a different fifth member each time. these guests have included keith rowe, martin tétreault, lê quan ninh, florian hecker, and kevin drumm in addition to the three excerpted sets which make up +, featuring otomo yoshihide, sachiko m, and christian marclay.

günter müller, a swiss percussionist who is increasingly focused on electronics, has worked with a wide range of musicians over the past two decades, including richard teitelbaum, taku sugimoto, jim o'rourke, dieb 13 and butch morris. many of his projects are documented on his groundbreaking label, for 4 ears, including the initial poire_z cd. swiss duo voice crack (norbert möslang and andy guhl) have been playing together since 1972. since 1983, they've been working exclusively with "cracked everyday-electronics", modifying and/or abusing small household machines in order to produce extreme, unique noises. france's erikm burst onto the scene in the mid-'90s as a virtuoso turntablist. since then, he has gradually shifted his output into a more abstract vein, sometimes even abandoning the turntables entirely in favor of a minidisc and sampler, as he does here.

as reflected in the arresting cd design by frequent voice crack collaborator alex hanniman, the quintet recordings presented here tie together multiple threads from these musicians' careers. otomo yoshihide, sachiko m and müller recorded as a trio on filament 2 (for 4 ears); erikm participated in otomo's superb les sculpteurs de vinyl project, as documented on memory & money (stupeur & trompette); pioneering turnatablist christian marclay first recorded with müller in 1992, and has an ongoing duo project with erikm, as well as a trio which adds dj olive; otomo yoshihide and voice crack recorded the acclaimed bits, bots and signs (erstwhile).

+ is poire_z's third cd, following the self-titled debut on for 4 ears, and presque_chic (sonoris). the guest musicians' distinctive personalities define each track, infiltrating the core quartet's whirlwind of ideas - influencing, gently nudging, but never impeding or derailing the constant progress.

otomo yoshihide: electronics
norbert möslang: cracked everyday-electronics
andy guhl: cracked everyday-electronics

otomo yoshihide has explored the nature of sound in many different ways during his career. otomo formed the hugely influential group ground zero in 1990, leading the project through numerous incarnations until its conclusion in 1998, as documented on the epic last concert (amoebic). over the last few years, otomo has become increasingly interested in minimal wave-based electronics, as heard in his filament and i.s.o projects. other projects which he is currently involved in include his new jazz quintet, who play standards from composers such as ornette coleman, gerry mulligan and eric dolphy, as well as original tunes by otomo, all refracted through his unique sensibilities. otomo has also composed numerous soundtracks for movies, and has written numerous articles and essays for japanese music publications.

swiss duo voice crack (norbert möslang and andy guhl) have been playing together since 1972. in 1977, they released the then underappreciated deep voices lp (fmp, reissued on cd by urthona), which they created largely with acoustic instruments. since 1983, they've been exclusively working with "cracked everyday-electronics", modifying and/or abusing numerous small household machines in order to produce extreme, unique noises. voice crack's current projects include their longstanding collaborative partnership with borbetomagus, poire_z with günter müller and erik m., as well as their solo work, well documented with such superb recent releases as below beyond above (uhlang) and shock_late (entenpfuhl). they also have a collaborarative disc in the works with jérôme noetinger and lionel marchetti, which will be released on grob in 2001.

bits, bots and signs documents the long overdue first meeting of these pioneers, recorded in march 2000 in st. gallen, switzerland, although as möslang says, "from the beginning, it was as if we had played together for a long time." the three musicians generate gently pulsing rumbles, piercing whistles and lingering whines, fusing these varied sounds into a series of expansive panoramas. the striking cover drawing was created by swiss artist alex hanniman.

ju-jikan: 10 hours of sound from japan
23f/sfm 901, double compact disc set

in 2001, the san francisco sound-arts organization 23five and the san francisco museum of modern art co- presented ju-jikan — a ten hour ‘listening event’ documenting the past 50 years of japanese experimental music. the curators of ju-jikan; atau tanaka, ryoji ikeda, and shunichiro okada did not intend their exhibition to be a comprehensive encyclopedia of japanese experimentation; rather they sought “to trace the complex web of sonic style that constitutes the current japenese musical landscape.” tanaka, whose lucid writings are found within ju-jikan’s liner notes, takes great care in describing the contradictions and unspoken connections that linger not just within the niches of japanese audio experimentation but also throughout all of japanese culture. just as technology and electronics are the lone assimilating factors within the broad scope of ju-jikan, these same tools also gave the possibility for separation from the west and from each other to create a wealth of new languages.

while the ten hour ‘listening event’ at sfmoma spanned 5 decades of historical recordings, the double cd centers upon the last decade, as a means to publish previously unreleased work from many of featured artists. all of the artists with ju-jikan (both the 2cd and the sfmoma listening event) draw from the recombinant power of electronic synthesis and the juxtaposition of disparate styles; which together have become a standard if elusively-defined musical vocabulary for japanese music. tanaka, ikeda, and okada offered convenient catagories (computer music, anti-academic movements, noise, anti-pop permutations, ambient fields, after improvised music, etc.) as ports of entry; however, they point out that many japanese experimental artists refuse to paint themselves into an aesthetic corner. ju-jikan’s cd companion features compositions from tamami toro, pain jerk, yasunao tone, nerve net noise, otomo yoshihide, atau tanaka, i.d., masonna, kozo inada, ichiro nodaira, hanatarash, yuji takahashi, ryoji ikeda, merzbow, kazuo uehara, astro, and testuo furudate.

founded in 1993, 23five incorporated is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the development and increased awareness of sound works in the public arena, and to the support and education of artists working with and discussing the medium of sound. for the past 14 years, 23five incorporated has remained at the forefront in bringing the most adventurous elements of sound art to the san francisco bay area. 23five has served as an important benefactor to artists such as john duncan, christina kubisch, francisco lopez, achim wollscheid, matt heckert, zbigniew karkowski, atau tanaka, and many more.

august 2009 release ; just wow ...

possibly the penultimate release in a series of locked-groove releases instigated by rrronemil beaulieaulessard back in 1993 with the “rrr-100” 7” single record (feat. 50 locks per side by folks like jim o’rourke, idea fire company, borbetomagus, skullflower, chop shop, new blockaders, et.al) then again in 1998 with the “rrr-500” lp (250 on each side by ... one a piece by pretty much a who’s who of late-90s experimental sound) ...

and now, 11 years later, we get the next logical evolutive step ; 1000 locked grooves (500 per side !!!) ; 50 each by 20 artists picked by rrron based on the following algorithm ::

this time i decided to focus on only 20 artists and give them plenty of room to stretch out - really glad i did because this one is much more solid than the other two, noisewise

before i invited the artists, i had devised a simple formula for myself
50/50 = noise/electronic (experimental)
50/50 = new/old school
50/50 = usa/intn'l
50/50 = people i always work with/people i've never worked with

the unsung genius / hero here is undoubtedly aardvark mastering’s paul brekus, who must have spent countless man-hours getting the metal mothers cut just right (i can only imagine the number of time he got halfway through cutting a side before making a single mistake & having to start over from scratch !!!) ... despite the fallout from such a thing a thing (i.e. the deluge of blackened noise tapes & cdr’s i’m going to be handed at gigs over the next year or so comprised of “prurient loops” will undoubtedly be bafffling) the quality & attention to detail put forth by just about everyone is seriously impressive ... easily on the records of the year thusfar & a testament to the staying power & endless, mutating possibilities of the vinyl lp record ...

highest recommendation !!!
