tetuzi akiyama / oren ambarchi / alan lichtwillow weep and moan for me” three inch compact disc

  • willow weep and moan for me (18:48)
gorgeously subtle trio guitar / electronics set, jointly improvised by oren, alan, and tetuzi down in new zealand a few years back ... more than just a foot-note in the respective discographies of each, i’ve always found this a nice “transitional” piece as tetuzi’s blues-based playing got more abstract (eventually yielding “don’t forget to boogie”) & alan & oren’s more monolithic (ditto “a new york minute” & “suspension,” respectively) ...

willow weep and moan for me

recorded 6 july 2004 at the bomb the space festival, wellington, nz

release date: 22 august 2006

an009 / ls003
running time 18:48

remove the chugging rhythm of the blues and you are left with the wail; that slow motion ghostly gasp of sorrow and bad omen. the high and lonesome sound of something wicked on the horizon is ingrained in this trio's shadowy and disembodied take on the blues. new york experimental music veteran alan licht, who has explored similar territory in his beautiful duo with loren connors, is joined by australian sound artist oren ambarchi and japanese improviser tetuzi akiyama at the 2004 bomb the space festival in wellington, new zealand.

using guitars the trio create an alien and minimal free-blues drone. akiyama and licht both revel in the spirit of blues guitar, intertwining high melodic lead lines and creating clusters of tense tone. ambarchi is a master at low end drift, and here the repeating low tones serve almost as a mutant version of a 12 bar anchor. all three players are deft at combining emotion with abstract playing (licht's rabbi sky, ambarchi's suspension, and akiyama's pieces for the wooden guitar series just to cite a few), and this set is an exemplary instance of engagingly emotive yet free playing.

oren ambarchi / günter müller / voice crackoystered” compact disc

  • walking oysters

  • oystered
sixth in a series of improv recordings marketed & manufactured by the fine folks over at sub rosa in belgium. each volume in this series comes in an oversized dvd-style jewel box with nice paintings & minimal information. this is the most recent (as of april, 2003) in the series, pitting sydney’s not-so-secret weapon again the swiss cracked everyday electronics kings voice crack and former nachluft drummer/sound-scientist günter müller. nice one...
audiosphere press release...
oren ambarchi - guitar & electronics
andy guhl - cracked everyday/electronics
günter müller - selected percussion, md’s, electronics
norbert möslang - cracked everyday/electronics.

...

take three swiss tourists. feed them top notch sydney rock oysters, fine hunter valley wines and get them into a recording studio with oren ambarchi. that was the challenge. this is the record.

if ambarchi, müller and the voice crack have one thing in common (beyond gastronomic excess), it is their ability to get extraordinary sounds out of everyday objects.

this one day recording session at big jesus burger in sydney highlights the mutual approach they share. there's such cohesion, wholeness and single mindedness to these pieces that makes identification of the individuals involved virtually impossible. so forget the 'who's doing what?' game. close your eyes and play 'where the hell am i?' ... rainforest, glacier, casino, ship's hull, bowling alley or five star restaurant?

black truffle press release...

following on from 2012's acclaimed imikizushi (bt 007cd/lp), now while it's still warm let us pour in all the mystery is the fourth release from the established power trio of keiji haino, jim o'rourke, and oren ambarchi, recorded in january 2012 at their yearly concert at superdeluxe, tokyo. while the trio's two previous double lp releases featured sprawling, side-long performances, the music here is presented in six shorter pieces, each one displaying a different side of the trio's interactions, from holy minimalism to cave-man rock.

the record begins with the trio joined by special guests charlemagne palestine and eiko ishibashi, conjuring ghostly tones from wine glasses as an accompaniment to haino's angelic vocals. this 10-minute piece, which moves from near silence and the sound of onstage footsteps to a stunning passage of clean guitar work from haino, is steeped in the same mysterious atmospherics as haino's great folk-drone project, nijumu. when haino turns to the flute on the lp's second track, a performance that clearly demonstrates the importance of the special concept of space and silence (ma) that haino has developed from traditional japanese aesthetics, o'rourke and ambarchi transform into the delicate and probing rhythm section of a classic '70s fusion side. when the trio returns to the crushing free-rock of their last two records, o'rourke's heavily effected bass rolling alongside ambarchi's tumbling rhythms as haino's guitar squeals and slashes above them, their performances display a new purposefulness and concision.

now truly operating as a band after a number of years of playing together, the pieces here feel like instant rocks songs -- o'rourke and ambarchi instantly locking into solid riffs over which haino alternates between jarring no-wave chords, intense soloing and his signature vocalizations. when the trio slow down and stretch out, the rhythm section plods like an abstracted crazy horse on the brink of collapse, and haino elicits long, mournful solos reminiscent of the first classic fushitsusha double live lp. perhaps more accessible than the trio's previous recordings because of its range and concision, now while it's still warm... exudes the dark, alien quality of haino's greatest recordings and testifies to the strength of the musical bond that has developed between these three players.

merzbow / oren ambarchicat’s squirrel” long playing record

  • cat’s squirrel (2)
march 2013 release ; ... blistering duo-set wherein oren ambarchi’s guitar & electronic throb meets the skittering churn of masamimerzbowakita’s synth & laptop ...
black truffle press release...
cat's squirrel presents a live recording of masami akita and oren ambarchi’s performance in campbelltown, australia in may 2012. although akita and ambarchi have known one another since 1993 and performed together as part of larger ensembles, this was their first performance as a duo.

together they create a massive wall of sound that moves from the cavernous to the blisteringly psychedelic, laying down shifting low-end structures over which pointillist details ricochet across the stereo field. akita and ambarchi s voices blend together into a sonic morass, ambarchi’s set-up expanded to include extra electronics and a spring reverb unit in addition to his signature guitar textures, and akita utilizing both analogue and digital sound sources.

moving through a number of episodes, from deluges of reverberated metal screeches to rapid-fire iterations of visceral electronic tones, the record reaches a high point mid way through the second side, where akita’s electronics gradually thin out into a stream of skipping chirps and screeches while around him ambarchi builds up a dense mass of phasing low end guitar tones, the duo patiently developing an impenetrable wall of ecstatic, psychedelic noise.

imikuzushi
label: black truffle
format: cd
catalogue number: bt07

release date: 2/28/2012

the yearly summit of keiji haino, jim o'rourke and oren ambarchi continues with imikuzushi, which finds the group extending the power-trio strategies of 2011's highly-praised in a flash everything comes together as one there is no need for a subject (bt 005lp) and bringing to them a newly-sustained intensity.

for this performance, haino limits himself to electric guitar and vocals, forming complex networks of slashing rhythm work, noise squall and chromatic shredding, moving at times to near-silent passages of howled vocals and isolated, hanging guitar strums.

the tendency towards driving free-rock which surfaced on moments of the trio's last release is cemented here, with o'rourke's fuzzed-out, non-linear bass riffing moving the music into almost garage-rock areas, combining with ambarchi's drums to form a bedrock of hypnotic, metronomic pounding which transforms itself effortlessly into passages of flowing free-time.

like all of haino's best work, the trio transcends any 'rock' genre exercise to enter a non-idiomatic zone of ritual intensity, creating a music formed purely out of instrumental and group-mind possibility. presented as four unedited excerpts salvaged from an epic show that lasted well over three hours, the sometimes raw nature of the recording only adds to its directness and harshly emotive quality.

label: black truffle

release date: 2/14/2012

the mortimer trap is an epic, 77-minute "variation" of morton feldman's for bunita marcus, constructed by german experimentalist and techno icon thomas brinkmann and australian sound artist oren ambarchi. pulsating waves of claustrophobic ambience generated from who-knows-what patiently builds into a throbbing, rhythmic pulse of gorgeous sonic density.

since the '80s, thomas brinkmann has experimented with sound, its textures and its construction methods. his custom-built two-arm turntable on concept 1, the sampling of damaged records on klick and various experiments with carved-groove vinyl are just a handful of career highlights that mark brinkmann out as a true musical pioneer.

oren ambarchi, primarily known for his solo guitar records for the touch label, has worked with a diverse array of artists such as keiji haino, fennesz, phill niblock, jim o'rourke, voice crack, keith rowe and sunn 0))).

ambarchi and brinkmann first worked together in japan in january 2011 in a trio with mika vainio. the mortimer trap is their first collaborative work as a duo.

afternoon tea

who would have thought a relaxed sunny afternoon, newfound friendships and some spur-of-the-moment would have resulted in what’s been described as ’one of the most compelling documents of both free improvisation and electronica (all music guide) ?

it’s the people involved in ’afternoon tea’ - originally released in 2000 on german label ritornell and now reissued on black truffle with a new master, bonus tracks and newly discovered live recordings after years of being out of print - that ensured it as more than a happy accident. the twin guitar presence of amm’s keith rowe and oren ambarchi and kindred spirits of the laptop - sydney’s pimmon, vienna’s christian fennesz and peter rehberg - made it a momentous day.

with all the players coming together during the 2000 what is music? festival, ’afternoon tea’ stands as a highpoint of the then-emerging intersection between powerbook performance and guitar improvisation. all subtlety, nuance and detail, it is a revelation of restraint. built on a steadying flow of burbling rhythm, the quintet slowly weave around each others’ sonics in layers to create a tonal palette immersive in its atmosphere and magnetic in its compulsion.

hindsight clearly reveals the heart of these pieces - important to note considering they were recorded at a time when laptop performance was an alien concept to many in experimental music, suffering controversy and backlash as well as an over-abundance of pale approaches from many who took it on as novelty as opposed to serious musical pursuit. those involved in the 'afternoon tea' session left their australian tour inspired, citing their merry time in the country eating, drinking and hanging out at the beach as well as their performances as a direct influence on their following work. many great live recordings were spawned from the tour itself including rehberg & bauer's 'passt', fennesz' 'live at revolver' (both on touch) and a collaboration between him and new zealand's rosy parlane (released on synaesthesia). additionally the seeds were sown for the fennesz classic 'endless summer' from 2001 (mego).

afternoon tea’ remains one of the quiet and real achievers for experimental music of the past decade.

stacte.3
label: black truffle
format: cd
catalogue number: bt01

originally released in 2000 as a limited vinyl only album, 'stacte.3' is now available on cd for the first time.

described by wire scribe jon dale as "alvin lucier and cluster collaborating for mego", the concept of oren ambarchi's 'stacte' lp series - now comprising of five volumes - began in 1998. the first few 'stacte' lps were self-released by ambarchi and featured his earliest explorations of the guitar and its sonic possibilities after a period known as a drummer in post-punk, noise and free jazz outfits. an idea was explored and investigated at length using a spontaneous approach, with ambarchi treating each side of the vinyl like a canvas, slowly capturing a moment, patiently teasing every nuance and implication from each texture. his method allowed the listener to sink their teeth into something substantial over the course of the lp side's entire duration, resulting in an otherworldly, cumulative impact of patiently unfolding compositions.

the 'stacte.3' release (especially the lp's second side) was a breakthrough for ambarchi and it defined the parameters for his subsequent projects such as 2001's 'suspension' and 'grapes from the estate' from 2004, both released on the legendary uk label touch.

'stacte.3' is an early glimpse of ambarchi at his most raw and minimal and it's a fascinating, integral listen in his catalogue of sound works.

remastered in december 2008 and with artwork designed by stephen o'malley.

raga ooty / nilgiri plateau lp
oren ambarchi

oren ambarchi is an electronic guitarist and percussionist with longstanding interests in transcending conventional instrumental approaches. born in sydney in 1969, he has been performing live since 1986. his work focuses mainly on the exploration of the guitar, "re-routing the instrument into a zone of alien abstraction where it's no longer easily identifiable as itself. instead, it's a laboratory for extended sonic investigation". (the wire, uk).

raga ooty unearths three previously unreleased works (each titled with reference to the area in south india where his mother was born) from oren ambarchi’s archive, showcasing the rawer side of his solo work between 2006 and 2011. the side-long raga ooty unspools a twisting, skittering thread of gritty guitar harmonics over a bed of buzzing tambura drone, creating the same paradoxical impression of simultaneous stasis and forward propulsion achieved by minimalist masters such as henry flynt, to whom this work is dedicated.

the nilgiri plateau generates an 8 minute wash of gleaming overtones from a 12 string acoustic guitar played with motors, continuing the experiments first made public on the 2007 stacte motors lp. the closing raga ooty (slight return) returns to the distorted guitar harmonic hysterics of the opening piece, this time elaborated over a wash of ambarchi’s signature leslie cabinet tones, building relentlessly over the course of 12 minutes recorded live in basel late last year.

oren ambarchilost like a star” long playing record

  • lost like a star

  • the final option
awesome vinyl-only release from mms perennial oren ambarchi, featuring two side length pieces for electric guitar, bowed instruments, samples, bells, motor, cymbals & percussion - the first a studio construct “composed for performances of ‘the drifting view x’ with japanese dance troupe gekidan kaitaisha, tokyo, march 2003”, the second a “live recording abc tv studios, melbourne, feb 3 2006.”

both pieces lift off whisper-quiet, then carve a rift of sine-tone throb and bowed/brushed metal haze clear across the room. oren’s in fine form throughout; essential listening for any fan of long-form sound...

oren ambarchi

limited vinyl by the great experimental guitarist oren ambarchi from australia. a touch label recording artist, oren has been making music since 1986, creating sounds from the guitar that one would not expect to hear. on this lp two long tracks one per side, start from minimal low frequency sounds to ever growing drones of manipulated guitars...staggeringly beautiful!

ltd to 650 hand numbered!

oren ambarchi

oren ambarchi is an electronic guitarist and percussionist with longstanding interests in transcending conventional instrumental approaches. born in sydney in 1969, he has been performing live since 1986. his work focuses mainly on the exploration of the guitar, "re-routing the instrument into a zone of alien abstraction where it's no longer easily identifiable as itself. instead, it's a laboratory for extended sonic investigation."

for anyone who still associates oren ambarchi exclusively with the clipped, bass-heavy tones of solo electric guitar works such as suspension, this rhythmically churning one-man-band monster of an album-length piece might seem to come out of nowhere. however, listeners who have followed the breadth of his work for the last few years (solo and in projects with collaborators from jim o’rourke to stephen o’malley and keith rowe to keiji haino) will have noted how ambarchi has allowed increasingly clear traces of his enthusiasms as a music listener (for classic rock, minimal techno and 70’s fusion, among other areas) to surface in his performances and recordings, all the time filtering them through his signature long-form structures and psychoacoustic sonics.

recorded in a single inspired studio session, sagittarian domain displaces ambarchi’s trademark guitar sound from the centre of the mix, its presence felt only as an occasional ghostly reverberated shimmer. endlessly pulsating guitar and bass lines sit alongside electronic percussion and thundering motorik drumming (familiar from his work with keiji haino) at the core of the piece, locking into a voodoo groove like faust covering a 70’s cop show theme. the work is founded on hypnotic almost-repetition, the accents of the drum hits and interlocking bass and guitar lines shifting almost imperceptibly back and forwards over the beat as they undergo gradual transformations of timbre. cut-up and phase-shifted strings enter around the half-way mark like an abstracted memory of the eastern-tinged fusion of the mahavishnu orchestra’s classic visions of the emerald beyond, before returning for an extended, stark yet affecting come-down coda, equal parts gavin bryars and purple rain.

while sagittarian domain contains traces of a diversity of influences, it mines all of them to uncover something that is clearly an extension of ambarchi’s own investigations up to this point, exhibiting the same care for micro-detail and surrender to the physicality of sound that are present in all of his work, extending them in new ways to repetition, pulse and rhythm

angel is ilpo väisänen (pan sonic) and dirk dresselhaus (schneider tm) who play time-transcending freeform sound, weightlessness and gravity of electromagnetic signals together since 1999.

the 5 tracks describe the last period of a 26000 years long cycle that leads to a new situation on this planet.

26000 was recorded between 2008 and 2010 at construction site studios in berlin & ilpo's cottage in karttula, finland and features guest appearences by hildur gudnadottir, bj nilsen and oren ambarchi.

the repertoire of the instruments is very wide: glassbowls, metal objects, pieces of wood, grass, birds, dragonflies, lake echo, smoking box and the regular electronic equipment as well as acoustic instruments.

hildur plays cello & the halldorophon (a kind of cello that feeds itself back).
oren plays percussion & guitar.
benny did field recordings and processing.

all mixed by angel at dirk's newly built studio called zone and mastered by rashad becker in berlin.

it's all good in the tummy, bwoys, because the black sabbath parts were totally ac/dc.

the four gentlemen of the guitarcloud” double compact disc set

  • perfect grass (23:47)
  • deformed veil (38:15)

  • yellow cloud (62:25)
just a superb set from the penultimate eai “super-group” of oren ambarchi, christian fennesz, toshimaru nakamura, and keith rowe; each invited to the table on account of their prior association with the electric guitar (with nakamura, the wrench-in-the mechanics that he is, defaulting here to his main instrument; the “no-input mixing board.”)

moments of fennesz-ian wash and bits of oren’s bass-heavy sine-bursts peek out from between the cracks, but for the most part the set is a veritable festival of micro-detail; those fond of rowe and nakamura’s duo work will be in familiar ground, albeit with a much fuller range and a near-constant ground-hum of tonal blur.

of the 50-odd erstwhile titles yet, this is most likely the best bet for getting your initial toe wet... the others will come naturally ...
erstwhile press release...
the four gentlemen of the guitar are:

keith rowe: guitar, electronics
oren ambarchi: guitar, electronics
christian fennesz: guitar, computer
toshimaru nakamura: no-input mixing board

keith rowe, oren ambarchi, christian fennesz and toshimaru nakamura are four of the most prominent and influential musicians in experimental music today, each with extensive discographies and distinctive styles. in mid-2004, they formed the four gentlemen of the guitar (4g), and played a series of shows in europe and canada, three of which are contained on cloud. the underlying concept of 4g is to unite four artists who each began their musical explorations as guitarists, keeping that mindset as a crucial underpinning of their work as they've each explored increasingly abstract territory, both with and without guitars.

rowe's history has been well documented at this point. having mostly performed within amm until the late 90's, he's since been involved in a wide range of projects, including a slew of the most prominent erstwhile releases. he's the cornerstone musician for the label, and the 4g grouping was his idea.

ambarchi is making his erstwhile debut (except for the 7 guitar disc in the amplify 2002 box set). born in sydney in 1969, he has been performing live since 1986. his recent work as a solo artist on touch is very well known and respected, and he's been working with rowe in various small groupings since 2000. ambarchi is also co-organiser of the what is music? festival, australia's premier annual showcase of local and international experimental music.

fennesz, known to a wider audience for his studio-constructed records like endless summer and venice, is also a superb collaborative improviser, as documented on projects like fenno'berg (w/ jim o'rourke and pita), wrapped islands (w/ polwechsel), live at the lu (w/ rowe), and erstlive 004 (w/ sachiko m, otomo yoshihide, and peter rehberg).

since 1998, nakamura has been exploring the possibilities of his "no-input mixing board" in contexts ranging from solo to collaborations with rowe, günter müller, sachiko m, andrea neumann, john butcher and sean meehan. nakamura was a prominent presence throughout the amplify 2002 box set, appearing on five of the seven cds, an integral part of the good morning good night and erstlive 005 releases, and will be releasing the much-anticipated follow up to the highly acclaimed weather sky cd with rowe in early 2006.

there have been two larger group releases featuring three of these four musicians, afternoon tea (ritornell) has rowe, ambarchi and fennesz, and the 7 guitar disc on the amplify 2002 box has rowe, ambarchi and nakamura, but the 4g project is the first time all four have performed together. cloud contains three performances (from vand'ouevre, paris and victoriaville) from their seven city tour in may/june 2004, totalling over two hours of music. the widely differing aesthetics of the four musicians meld fluidly, forming hovering, delicate masses of sound. the packaging meshes rowe's striking cover painting with friederike paetzold's eyecatching design.

|| the four gentlemen of the guitar ||

at the centre of this project is the guitar, perhaps the world's most ubiquitous instrument. here we are looking at its extended possibilities - that is to say rather than summing up guitar-ness in a picasso-like way, we would be more interested in mondrianesque extensions.

christian and toshi, although both guitar players, have performed in public mostly on instruments that have become physical and musical extensions of the guitar. in my case, along with oren, we preserved the basic form of the guitar, obviously exploring its "non-guitarlike" possibilities, but always maintaining its essential "guitar-ness".

how might a japanese, an australian, an austrian and an englishman with very different musical and artistic personalities explore in real-time the world's most global instrument, incorporating boomerang loop stations, digital effects, mixing boards, computers etc.?

the quartet form "at first was a medium that allowed four gentlemen amateurs to converse musically"*, and from haydn's time became the appropriate medium that produced music of the deepest personal expression and contemplative profundity.

so here we have four gentlemen, the guitar, a conversation between the analog and the digital, the north and the south.

keith rowe

gravetemple was formed in 2006 as a side-project of the band sunn o))) by oren ambarchi, stephen o'malley and attila csihar. the group formed initially to tour in israel summer 06, creating several recordings which eventually became "the holy down" album, which was released on southern lord recordings in 2007. at the time of the israel tour, the lebanon war started and was in action. in summer 08 the trio reformed together with the addition of australian drummer matt "skitz" sanders for a short european tour culminating at a headlining performance at supersonic festival in birmingham. in late 2009 the original trio reconvened for a special one-off concert at london's institute of contemporary arts. april 2013 marks the first set of live action since that period, and a new chapter in the ongoing system of the related network.

"ambient/ruin" was created with the 2008 quartet, elements of tape collage, concrete, field recordings blend within a strong geographically diverse (parts were recorded in japan, australia, paris and israel) suite of heavy minimalist / maximalist music, black / death metal and drone. the culmination of these efforts become the music, literally, of sadistik exekution meeting phill niblock.

gravetemple clearly adapted the aspects more abstract and experimental related to sunn o))) and has continued from that point, with continued ongoing focus on metaphysical construction of free music and will. the music became a geographically and metaphysically based effort.

oren ambarchi has been an active colleague, we have collaborated on a number of sunn o))) projects, and also sunn o))) related projects, film scores, tours, meals etcetera over the years. he brought us to australia for the first time in 2004 (see soma010 notes), we toured israel with attila csihar as gravetemple trio in 2006.

oren introduced us to haino-san in 2006 when sunn o))) played fimav festival in victoriaville quebec (oren was in the ensemble on that tour), in a stinky locker room (the venue was a hockey rig). had no idea what to expect but a few hours later he was on stage with us. it was one of those "what now" moments you never imagine happening having been a fan/follower of haino's playing, concerts and recordings over the years.

5 years later somehow we ended up as this trio. haino, oren and i were all in holland for one reason or another and decided to try it. i played bass for the first time on stage with this group. maybe it shows but the idea was a power trio backing up haino-san, with a lot of amplification. we had the chance to repeat the trio twice again so far, and this recording comes from a concert in paris november 2011. it's hard to describe the lessons through realtime communication in music with such a master of form, but needless to say they were much different than what i was expecting and beyond! proof again that expectations lead to dead ends. was a most challenging experience in real-time music. i feel incredibly honored to be part of this trio.

oren introduced us to haino-san in 2006 when sunn o))) played fimav festival in victoriaville quebec (oren was in the ensemble on that tour), in a stinky locker room (the venue was a hockey rig). had no idea what to expect but a few hours later he was on stage with us. it was one of those "what now" moments you never imagine happening having been a fan/follower of haino's playing, concerts and recordings over the years.

5 years later somehow we ended up as this trio. haino, oren and i were all in holland for one reason or another and decided to try it. i played bass for the first time on stage with this group. maybe it shows but the idea was a power trio backing up haino-san, with a lot of amplification. we had the chance to repeat the trio twice again so far, and this recording comes from a concert in paris november 2011. it's hard to describe the lessons through realtime communication in music with such a master of form, but needless to say they were much different than what i was expecting and beyond! proof again that expectations lead to dead ends. was a most challenging experience in real-time music. i feel incredibly honored to be part of this trio.

kranky press release...
artist: oren ambarchi & robin fox
title: connected
catalog #: krank169
formats available: lp
release date: october 22, 2012

presenting a new collaboration featuring oren ambarchi on guitar, the electronics of robin fox, and both performing on various other instruments. the music on this album came about as the result of the two being asked to co-compose the soundtrack for a new production by renowned australian contemporary dance company chunky move for their connected production.

chunky move's artistic director gideon obarzanek was drawn to the organic and deeply musical qualities of ambarchi's work and the digital, almost scientific quality of fox's sound. over a process of many weeks these two aesthetics were merged. working both in the chunky move studio and head-gap studio in melbourne, new works were forged from both digital and analog sources.

this release brings together two of the most extraordinary artist/musicians working in australia today. both are renowned internationally for their individual practices, and here they join forces to produce powerful music that fuses ambarchi's legendary guitar sound with fox's mathematically rigorous tones and textures. this fusion results in sound works that stretch in scope from the sublime and spacious to the intensely dense and foreboding. treading a precarious line between music and abstract sound, between organic and inorganic tones, this collaboration is a must listen for anyone interested in contemporary soundworks.

  • worried friends (6:40)

  • nervous enemies (6:51)
october 2007 release ; a pair of “piano music” pieces, acting as the debut collaborative single from two of contemporary experimental music’s most prolific/consistently rewarding practitioners; oren ambarchi and lasse marhaug ...

those of you expecting something on par with maurizio pollini’s reading of satie’s gnossiennes might be a little shocked to find instead a fierce 12+ minute inside-piano scrape-fest, hedged with bursts of live-electronic feedback & a “hot” fidelity familiar from any number of david tudor recordings. .. yet at the same time not too far removed from the new blockaders’ whole gesamtnichswerk ; this is anti-music at its finest ...

not something for strict followers of oren’s friendly/subdued sine-guitar throb, nor lasse’s harsh wall of electronic sound; but definitely one for those whose preferences fall in the noisier end of the electro-acoustic composition/improv spectrum ...

september 2007 release; the secondpop” album from the duo of chris townend (proprietor of sydney’s lovely bigjesusburger studios, also 1/2 of rand and holland) and oren ambarchi (currently tied with lasse marhaug for most titles involving him in the mms catalogue... what can i say? i’m a huge fan...)

whereas the first album was straight-up summertime sunshine jangly pop music, this adds slightly more “grit” to the mixes; little clicky sounds and background ambience, guitars are played in non-standard ways, etc... an obvious comparison would be to jim o’rourke’s drag city records (i.e. someone with a background in more outre stylings embracing the laurel canyon sound... but still keeping littlenoises & bits of abstraction in the mixes) but also the clientele (especially the reverb-heavy vocal delivery on most songs), even mid-period (i.e. pre-dad-rock) wilco.

a really, really nice record. i don’t listen to all that much contemporary pop music these days, mainly as i hear the majority of it as either redunant or lazy/throwaway... this is anything but; as meticulously assembled as oren’s touch-label records, just a little bit more “accessible” ...

lovely australianearly adopters” edition, housed in a huge fold-out poster sleeve... apparently this will also be out on staubgold on vinyl/cd in a few months...

october 2012 release ; ... a single chamber-piece (split across two sides) jointly composed & arranged by oren ambarchi & james rushford, performed by the two (oren on his electric guitar & pedal array, rushford on piano) with an australian chamber ensemble providing the voicing & filigree ...

... there’s a certain spaciousness & open-ended appeal here (which, due to rushford’s use of sus-4 tonalities throughout, reminds me more of the west-coast “cold blue” scene than any of the suggested reference points cited below) that carries the piece along at a nice lilt ; it’s easy to see this as an “acousticattempt at the kind(s) of delay-line sine-throb spaces of oren’s solo work (albeit with a softer, more dynamic touch) ...
prisma press release...
new release: oren ambarchi & james rushford - wreckage [lp]

wreckage presents a collaborative work jointly composed by oren ambarchi and james rushford (originally commissioned for the ultima contemporary music festival at henie onstad kunstsenter and premiered by ensemble neon) for their own instruments (piano and electric guitar) and a small chamber ensemble, performed here by an ensemble of leading lights in melbourne’s experimental and new music communities.

rushford’s piano gently ushers the listener though a series of tonally ambiguous environments, building up unified textures through irregular iterations of small melodic and harmonic units. while the integration of ambarchi’s spectral processed guitar (which gradually climbs to the foreground as the piece progresses) with the acoustic instrumentation recalls the late works of luigi nono, and the way the timbral lushness of the chamber group is tempered by never resolved harmonic tension seems to draw on feldman’s work of the early 1970s, wreckage also gestures towards the melancholic, intuitive minimalism of luciano cilio and giusto pio and the wandering melodicism of aldo clementi. the lushness of the instrumental textures employed and hints of almost-direct melodicism ensure the piece is approachable and immersive; but the ever-shifting harmonic foundations and complex interplay between voices ensures that it remains somewhere beyond the listener’s grasp, in a paradoxical state of simultaneous movement and stasis.

title: vigil
format: cd
cat. #: quecksilber 1
release date: 26.05.03

"vigil" is the second duo album by australian composers oren ambarchi and martin ng from sydney after 2001's "reconnaissance" on the staubgold label. it's a dreamlike sonic excursion based upon the fluid architectural modulation of harmonics and resonances. recalling the landmark experiments of the sonic arts union (robert ashley, david behrman, alvin lucier and gordon mumma), ambarchi and ng create an enigmatic tapestry of pulsing, shimmering and shifting sound which represents a subtle and compelling realignment of eastern and western minimalist traditions.

austrian designer tina frank of mego has added two short films in mpeg format to this release which in its slow and subtle moves match perfectly with the fragile beauty of ambarchi's and ng's music.

martin ng whose main instrument is the turntable is another outstanding character in sydney's rich experimental music circuit. he released an album for the mego label with farmer's manual's hiaz gmachl, recorded for grob with jim denley and was part of 2002's "turntable hell" tour with among others otomo yoshihide and martin tetrault.

sunn o)))monoliths & dimensions” compact disc

  • aghartha (17:34)
  • big church [megszentségteleníthetetlenségeskedéseitekért] (09:43)
  • hunting & gathering (cydonia) (10:02)
  • alice (16:21)
may 2009 release ; impressive outing from an “orchestral” lineup of sunn o))), with regulars stephen o’malley, greg anderson, oren ambarchi, and attila csihar aided by a who’s who of contemporary sound, including deep listening band founder stuart dempster (!?), trombonist julian priester, steve moore, eyvind kang, dylan carlson, cuong vu, daniel menche, joe preston, rex ritter, and dozens more ...

the opener “aghartha” immediately places us in familiar territory as unison slo-mo riff-walls blast us for a good 5 minutes ... but then ensemble begins to rear it’s head ; at first all penderecki-like, then coalescing into a woozy conch-shell pattern under attila’s recitation(s) ... “big church” is a straight-up choral piece, with said buzzsaw guitars offering a rattling foundation under the angelic proceedings ... “hunting & gathering” reminds me of “grimmrobe” era sunn o))), albeit with a nice layering of analogue synths ... and finally “alice” ; were it not for the southern lord catalogue number, i could easily take the striated brass writing & penultimate drone-doom core for something out of the xi / pogus catalogue(s) ...

love that these guys, after a pretty lengthy break there, didn’t just drop “black 2” on us, but instead something much closer to the heart of the matter here @ mms ... beautifully captured long-form sound, taking cues from the 70s/80s west-coast minimalism & modern composition wave & site-specific explorations ... highly recommended !!!

sunn o)))
monoliths & dimensions

sunn o))) is proud to present their 7th studio album, after 10 years of existence, entitled monoliths & dimensions. the album showcases the core guitar duo - stephen o’malley and greg anderson - incorporating influences from a plethora of guest musicians, bringing the sunn o))) sound to epic new levels. the band also collaborated with composer eyvind kang (notable for his work with john zorn, marc ribot, bill frisell, etc.) on various acoustic ensembles, in addition to the helios fueled electric guitars and basses. key players on the album include australian guitar genius oren ambarchi, enigmatic hungarian vocalist attila csihar (mayhem, tormentor, etc.) and slow music godfather dylan carlson (earth), as well as julian priester (worked with sun ra in the 50s, john coltrane’s african brass band, and herbie hancock’s sextant band) and new-music horn player stuart dempster. there's also an upright bass trio, french & english horns, harp & flute duo, piano, brass, reed & strings ensembles, and a viennese woman's choir led by persian vocal savant jessika kenney.

the album is not "sunn o))) with strings" or "metal meets orchestra" material. the band took an approach concentrating on more of allusion toward the timbre of feedback and the instruments involved, so the piece is really illusory, beautiful and not entirely linear, stating that the end product is "the most musical piece we’ve done, and also the heaviest, powerful and most abstract set of chords we've laid to tape" the album was recorded and mixed by randall dunn & mell dettmer at various points over the last 2 years. as can be expected the packaging for this album is beautiful and appropriately compliments the audio content. jewel case is sheathed by a velum o-card. expansive 24 page booklet with velum cover and specially coated heavy-weight paper. truly a site to behold!

monoliths & dimensions is practice in density, gravity and momentum.

maximum volume yields maximum results.

may 2008 release ; another one-off featuring sunn o)))’s greg anderson & steven o’malley, oren ambarchi, striborg’s sin nanna and attila csihar ...

i’m into this one ; there’s a seriously great bit of raw, squared-off long-form sound (laced with errant, chirping electronics - listen to the sound-sample) during the second “side” that takes the cake ... but sin nanna’s free-form drumming dots both pieces in fine fashion, and the “in-the-red” fidelity throughout makes for some dense, heavy listening ...

pentemple - 0))) presents.... cd

in may of 2007 the mighty sunn 0))) embarked on a pacific rim tour that included performances in australia and japan. the lineup for this tour included the core sunn 0))) duo: greg anderson and stephen o'malley plus t.o.s. (moog), oren ambarchi (analog effects and supplemental guitar) and vokillist attila csihar. upon arrival in sydney, sunn 0))) invited one of their favourite black metal artists: striborg over from tasmania to collaborate with them during their show.

this unholy meeting went over very well and the inaugural ritual was a warm up gig at the toft in town club one evening before the larger gig at the hi-fi bar (w/brethren: boris). the results of this collaboration was a completely improvisational, vicious audio and visual assault on the sold out, standing room only audience. this was among the first time that sunn 0))) had worked with live drums and the outcome was completely unprecedented. the whole event was recorded live to 24-track/multi-track. afterwards oren ambarchi edited, sequenced and overhauled the eq to make it as brutal as possible.

oren ambarchiin the pendulum's embrace” compact disc

  • fever, a warm poison (17:55)
  • inamorata (10:20)
  • trailing moss in mystic glow (12:36)
october 2007 release; the follow-up to 2006’s grapes from the estate from composer/improvisor oren ambarchi.

...don’t let the southern lord catalogue number fool you (actually; the disc was simultaneously released in the uk on touch) - despite oren’s recent doom/black metal transgressions, this music follows on from his earlier experiments with sine-tone guitar throb & extended forms.

utilizing “electric and acoustic guitars, piano, bells, glass harmonica, voice, drums,” oren has meticulously honed these three pieces into “late-night come-down monsters.” veren grigorov’s strings (the only non-oren-performed instrumentation hereon - listen to the sound-clip) add a warmer feel to the proceedings than the earlier, guitar-electronic records.

i make my love of this music known throughout this site, no need to repeat it ad infinitum here... this is a fine, fine record, easily one of the quantifiably best of the year. highly recommended.

oren ambarchi - "in the pendulum's embrace" cd

by now mr. ambarchi should be no stranger to the initiated drone fiends as his unmistakable tonal presence has permeated many southern lord releases in the last few years.  most notable were his contributions to the "black one" album by sunn 0))) but he is also involved with the 0))) related trios: grave temple, and burial chamber trio.

oren ambarchi continues his otherworldly investigations with “in the pendulum’s embrace”, a kind of dark twin to his landmark 2004 album “grapes from the estate”.  returning again to the hallowed halls of bjb studios in sydney, ambarchi expands the scope and range of his unique musical language, incorporating an even broader pallette of instruments and sensibilities. despite the use of glass harmonica, strings, bells, piano, percussion and guitars, it’s startling that the world created is still unmistakably his own, and that there is such a cohesion of vision throughout the albums’ three lengthy pieces. with this record there’s an even more tenuous coexistence of fragility and density; sounds as light as air mingling with wall shaking low-end.

packaged in a 5" mini-gatefold w/ printed inner-sleeve.  design by john wozencroft. released exclusively in north america by the lord.

ok... now here’s where the doom-metal/minimal-drone crossover gets interesting... i didn’t find it odd in the least when oren did a european tour as a member of sunn o))); o’malley and co. had prior gone down to oz for a “what is music?” appearance and must have been bowled over by oren’s solo guitar work during their stay...

what is interesting, however, is how this record; arguably one of oren’s most challenging and minimal works, is being re-marketed to the massive audience for the southern lord/doom-metal spec. frankly, the prospect is pretty damn exciting...

southern lord has done a fine job of repackaging the original idea-label 220gsm/stoughton heavy-stock aqueous gloss sleeve edition into a stoughton cd-gatefold (retaining the original tina frank/inwirements design.) and the music itself, recorded live @ extrapool in 2001, shows oren at the peak of his prowess in coaxing otherwordly, alien tones out of his chopped gibson explorer & moogerfrooger/boomerang pedal-set. nice that the music can be heard for less than the idea lp was fetching (something like $28 new.)

staubgold 79 sun - "i'll be the same" cd

staubgold is proud to present "i'll be the same", the second recording from australian duo sun.

sun is the coupling of sound artist oren ambarchi and musician-producer chris townend. the pair have been kindred spirits for many years, with townend being a sensitive and crucial ear in engineering ambarchi's landmark solo recordings.

it was their shared love for expansive pop that led them to their first musical collaboration together as sun, released on staubgold in 2003 (staubgold 39 2cd/2lp). the self-titled debut was a laidback delight of many melodic charms and artful creation, as sweet as it was wry in its lyricism.

"i'll be the same" is finally a beaming signal of more to follow.

staubgold 15 oren ambarchi & martin ng - "reconnaissance" cd

"reconnaissance" is the first duo release by australian composers oren ambarchi and martin ng from sydney - a trilogy of pieces based upon the fluid architectural modulation of harmonics and resonances. recalling the landmark experiments of the sonic arts union (robert ashley, david behrman, alvin lucier and gordon mumma), ambarchi and ng create an enigmatic tapestry of pulsing, shimmering and shifting sound which represents a subtle and compelling realignment of eastern and western minimalist traditions.

catalog number: taiga 19
artist: alan lamb, garry bradbury, david burraston, oren ambarchi & robin fox
title: wired open day 2009
format: 2xlp
total running time: 75:06

release date: 5 june 2012

wired open day 2009 is a vinyl-only release documenting live performances by alan lamb, garry bradbury, david burraston, oren ambarchi and robin fox. held outdoors during the evening of october 31 at the wired lab, in rural south west, new south wales, australia, this 2xlp is a document of the event; the result of an artist in residence program to explore the sonic possibilities of the wires, landscape scale installations in rural nsw.

the wired lab is an artist run initiative founded in 2007 to foster art / science collaborations in a rural environment. the initial focus of this project was to establish a site to preserve and expand on the wires a distinctly australian invention that was pioneered by australian artist alan lamb since the 1970’s.

lamb’s formal investigations of the wires started in 1976 with his discovery of a 1km stretch of abandoned telegraph wires on a farm in the great southern region of western australia ... lamb learnt to record them and later devised compositions with these recordings. when these telegraph lines eventually decayed, lamb commenced building wire installations primarily for recording. like the scale of the original telegraph wires, these purpose built wire installations were not of a domestic scale, they too had a deep connection with nature and spanned 100’s of metres across the rural landscape. although principally functioning like a giant æolian harp, it is not only wind that ‘plays’ the wires, it seems that on their own accord the wires often harmonically ‘sing’, vibrate or roar as they react to environmental factors, thereby creating a unique and infinite instrumentation of itself and its surrounds, in the words of david burraston... they are nature's microphone

the 4 sides of wired open day 2009 display the expansive range of the wire installations built by the wired lab. commencing at sunset, garry bradbury and alan lamb coax a gentle eco with acoustic recordings into deep and sonorous reverberations on side a. david burraston and alan lamb focus on droplets of zaps and wire oscillations at twilight, with side b culminating in a downpour of crackling spray. at nightfall, oren ambarchi applies his mastery of condensed and layered tones on side c, with shuddering overtones, husky drones and rich clusters of sustain. robin fox concludes, in the dark, on side d, mashing off-kilter rhythms with a tumble of staccato bursts and fuzzy crunch.

an edition of 500 double lps in hand-numbered matte-varnished stoughton tip-on gatefold jackets, wired open day 2009 was mastered by james plotkin, cut direct to metal and pressed on 200g virgin vinyl. this release features photographs from the site and text by sarah last, founder of the wired lab and curator of wired open day 2009.

oren ambarchi / scott horscroft / hado hosplit” long playing record

  • oren ambarchi & scott horscroft - 19 guitars
  • hado ho - sonic wave
  • hado ho - stereo action
actually this is the most recent issue in this series of splits-ville singles is this one (don’t pay the numerical scheme any mind) - released during the summer of 2006, and featuring a wall of sequenced guitar played by oren ambarchi and assembled by scott horscroft. anyone familiar with scott’s “9 guitars” disc on staubgold will know the score... think that, plus... 10...

hado ho is a name i’m not familiar with, and i’m spculating based on the info on the sleeve that hh’s takehito nakazato passed away a few years back... which is both a shame and a real shame as his side is a blend of lescalleet-ish tapeloops and mongrel electronics that i’d love to hear more of...

damo suzukithe swiftsure session” double long playing record set

  • side 1
  • side 2
  • side 3
3-sided double lp (4th side is blank) by can vocalist damo suzuki’s “network” (essentially... damo and a revolving cast of player-enthusiasts drawn from the pool of such in each locale damo visits whilst on his “never ending tour”), recorded live - direct to metal-mother/plate, no less - in a record mastering/pressing plant in melbourne, australia, in late 2004 (possibly the quickest turnaround from recording to its subsequent release in the history of... records).

for this performance/recording edition, the network consisted of damo on vocals, touch-label improv-minimal guitarist supreme (and longtime mms favorite) oren ambarchi on guitar, edmondo ammendola on bass, ollie olsen on synth, emil sarjia on guitar, and davey williams (presumably not the alabamian improv-guitarisy, but then again who knows anything for sure) on drums.

the quintet run through a single 3-side-long slow-burner, keeping the can oeuvre in close-check (oren, particularly, does a great job in channeling the late michael karoli’s aura via his minimalist echoplexed axe-weaving). in my mind the group provide as sympathetic a resonance to damo’s mythic intonement as do cul de sac (damo’s most visible recent sparring partners, as documented on the fantastic “abhayamudra” double-disc on strange attractors).

peculiarities of the recording process lend a unique sheen to the vibe of the whole project; for example, on the first and third sides there’s actually music in-progress from the second you put the needle on the very edge of the lead-in groove (nice touch), plus each side ends in a perfectly synced lock-groove. the fidelity is fantastic, what you’d expect from skipping a step or three of the recording/mastering/cutting/plating/manufacturing process (in fact, this music hasn’t touched any digital storage medium whatsoever... no 44.1k hard limit on the high end here folks...). and no need to pontificate further on the volume of soul-destroying power of the object itself and/or the music contained therein...

from orenambarchi.com:

throughout 2004, oren ambarchi has been playing live shows in australia with damo suzuki, vocalist of krautrock legends can. on nov 24, 2004 they did a session in front of a live audience at corduroy records pressing plant in melbourne. the music was cut live-to-acetate "on the fly", and has been pressed up as a 3-sided lp set in an edition of 300 as "the swiftsure session”.

tone 40 - oren ambarchi "intermission 2000-2008"

released: 2009
cd in digipak

artwork & design: jon wozencroft

intermission brings together a range of material oren ambarchi has contributed to compilations and limited edition vinyl releases between the years 2000 and 2008. highlights include two live recordings - an early, fragile solo guitar recording taken from a radio broadcast in 2000 and a final kiss on poisoned cheeks, his powerful 12" recorded live in vancouver in 2007 and originally released on table of the elements. additional tracks include iron waves an exclusive track in collaboration with vocalist paul duncan and intimidator featuring australian pianist/composer anthony pateras originally released on southern lord.

these are special anomalies in the ambarchi canon but nonetheless feature the hallmarks of his unique soundworld, all underpinned by his trademark deep guitar tones and meticulous attention to detail. all tracks are newly remastered, many of which are available on cd for first time.

to:83 | oren ambarchi "audience of one"

cd - 4 tracks - 53:51
artwork & photography: jon wozencroft
mastered by francois tetaz at moose, melbourne

on "audience of one", oren ambarchi presents a four-part suite which moves from throbbing minimalism to expansive song-craft to ecstatic free-rock. his previous solo albums for touch exhibited a clear progression towards augmenting and embellishing his signature bass-heavy guitar tones with fragile acoustic instrumentation. audience of one, while also existing in clear continuity with these recordings, opens the next chapter.

remarkable in its confidence and breadth, but also in the sensuous immediacy of its details, this is the first time a single record has come close to encapsulating ambarchi’s musical personality in its full range and singularity. the techniques and strategies developed in his refined improvisational work with keith rowe and his explorations of the outer limits of rock with sunn o))) and keiji haino are both in evidence, alongside the meticulous attention to detail and composition of his solo works. and on the cover of ace frehley’s ‘fractured mirror’ which closes the record, ambarchi even points to his roots as a classic rock fanatic, in an epic yet faithful version which extends the shimmering guitar patterns of the original into a rich field of phase patterns reminiscent of the classic american minimalism of reich and riley.

the album features a multitude of collaborators, who, far from appearing in incidental roles, are integral to the pieces on which they perform: on ‘salt’, ambarchi paints a hypnotic, chiming backdrop for paul duncan’s (warm ghost) vocals, and joe talia’s virtuoso drumming and driving cymbals are at the core of the epic ‘knots’, in which ambarchi, alongside a chamber arrangement by eyvind kang, weaves a net of frequencies and textures with the organic push and pull of a 70s psych jam, the bass response of a doom metal ritual and the psycho-acoustic precision of an alvin lucier composition.

on his previous records, ambarchi’s signature guitar tone was the ever-present bedrock over which other elements sounded. at moments on audience of one, this disappears entirely, as on the beautiful ‘passage’, which, recalling the 70’s italian non-academic minimalism of roberto cacciapaglia and giusto pio, is composed of overlapping tones from hammond organ and wine glasses, jessika kenney's voice, various acoustic instruments, and the delicate amplified textures of canadian sound-artist crys cole. rather than being provided by any particular sound, the unified feel of audience to one stems simply from the unique, patient sensibility ambarchi has developed over the last twenty years; abstracting musical forms into their barest forms, while somehow always managing to leave their emotive power intact.

i don't know a rabi that yells as high pitched and psycho then nik rizili! and i don't know another guitarist besides oren ambarchi that can make strings sound like yiddish yelling! they do sound like ladies that have their period non stop, since 5 years! and they do sound like they are 456 km away from the hospital while the head of a baby is forcing it's way out of a mangina.

so much stress, and strings so loose on a guitar that u can put both your legs and your two arms between the strings and the actual instrument. a hyperactive and creepy and slow  carnaval of absolute madness!

reminiscent to the more sparse parts of harry pussy, the screaming of hanatarashi..

variable resistance: 10 hours of sound from australia
23f/sfm 902, compact disc

over the past three or four years, the australian experimental musical community has flourished, thanks in part to the tireless globetrotting from artists like oren ambarchi, pimmon, and philip samartzis. variable resistance — a co-presentation between 23five incorporated and the san francisco museum of modern art — originally celebrated this australian renaissance with a 10 hour ‘listening event’ in september of 2002. from those ten hours, curator philip samartzis distilled the best tracks to be featured on this cd compendium. variable resistance is a title that encapsulates the tone and extent of the work on hand, referencing not only the electronic gizmo (the variable resistor) as key to many of the featured homespun constructions filtered through state of the art dsp filters, but also as an applicable non-definition of those artists who “offer variable resistance in how they are defined and the positions they occupy in a broader cultural context, fragmented, and dispersed among remote cities and divided by enormous physical and psychological space.”

within this disc, the australian aesthetic finds itself reflecting a number of ideas previously mined throughout the history of electronic music from mego’s fascination with the streaming micro-textures of digital fragmentation to metamkine’s conceptual riddles within their cinema pour l’oreille series to the brazen noise-junk collages from merzbow and otomo yoshihide. yet, variable resistance resolves its uniqueness by smashing these references with brutish noise and demonstrative force applied to the stereotypically delicate sensibilities of electro-acoustic composition. for instance, samartzis’ collages of environmental, plundered, and digitized sound meld into psychologically abrasive narrative scalded by toxic agents; pimmon transforms agitated chunks of granular synthesis into cybersonic lullabies; and david brown’s jarringly angular duet between a prepared guitar and a squeaking door stands as a steroid injected homage to pierre henry’s musique concrete classic variations pour une porte et un soupir. along with samartzis, brown, and pimmon, variable resistance also features exclusive compositions from oren ambarchi, robbie avenaim, philip samartzis, xonk, thembi soddell, darrin verhagen, and delire.

the amplify 2002: balance box set has been designed and assembled to recreate as much as possible the experience of being in tokyo in late october 2002 for the week-long whirlwind of music and camaraderie revolving around the 2002 amplify festival.

the annual series of amplify festivals began in 2001 in nyc, followed in 2002 by the event documented in this box. amplify returned to nyc in february 2003, and the next amplify will be in cologne and berlin in may 2004, co-curated by keith rowe and jon abbey. the festivals are closely tied to the erstwhile label, and are designed to showcase an ambitious amount of music within a short time period, demanding increased attention and focus from both the musicians and the audience. this box set aims to convey at least part of the intense atmosphere created by amplify's climate of total immersion.

the amplify 2002: balance box set contains over seven hours of music on seven cds, consisting of:

1) eight of the twelve sets from the festival itself, which took place over three nights at star pine's cafe in kichijoji, tokyo.

2) two cds compiled from the smaller club shows which took place before and after the festival itself, organized by toshimaru nakamura and taku sugimoto, including an entire disc by the all-star guitar septet of keith rowe, tetuzi akiyama, oren ambarchi, nakamura, otomo yoshihide, burkhard stangl and sugimoto.

3) a studio recording by the duo of günter müller and toshimaru nakamura, recorded that same week. this disc has been carefully sequenced and constructed, and is essentially a regular erstwhile release contained within the larger box.

the box also features a dvd by filmmaker jonas leddington and a 52 page, full-color booklet with photography by yuko zama and twenty separate essays by many of the people involved in the festival.

leddington's dvd contains a 109-minute visual document titled "balance beams," which is built around the festival itself and includes structured excerpts from all twelve sets, commentary from the musicians, behind-the-scenes footage, as well as images and sounds from tokyo. footage of the stangl/kurzmann set includes cuts of viennese filmmaker michaela grill's schnee video, as it was shown live in tokyo.

the dvd extras include 5.1 surround sound audio-only versions of the rowe/lehn/schmickler and müller/otomo sets, as well as three short individual features based on the three nights of outside festival performances that discs 1 and 7 were chosen from, including keith rowe discussing with the other guitarists how he believes a musician should approach performing the graphic score of cardew's treatise.

the box set is a limited edition of 800 copies, and will not be reprinted.

back in the salad days of the early digital music days these sorts of themed comps were in much wider supply ; glad to hear something like from a contemporary perspective ...
spekk press release...

title: small melodies
artist: v.a
time: 63’53"
format: cd

text by nao sugimoto

this is the first compilation album from spekk compiled by the label owner mondii. each of the artists were asked to compose a track with their interpretations of "small melodies" with keywords like warm, tender and calm. it was meant to present diversity of minimal-style music in a peaceful "harmonic" way. and it was a coincidence that both taylor deupree & stephan mathieu created a track dedicated to their child.

the first half of the album is the more "digital" side and the last half more "analog" side encompassing laptop digital processing to field recording materials (for instance, naph's track is only made out of frequencies within the wind/air) to band oriented materials.

participants delivers these great pieces of music from various continents including usa, sweden, france, germany, australia and japan showing slight relationships between each other which kind of gives us a warm feeling of unity within this ongoing global minimalist scene. it was also my intention to present that nowadays, there are not much differences between the outputs from more digital background artists and more band oriented musicians due to their methods of composing (technology) and interests and such. evidently, more and more rock labels will release digital processed music and bands will use digital softwares, electronic artists will become more aware of small sounds and warmth of the nature. i take this positive!

tone 33 | "touch. 30 years and counting"

4 tracks - dlp - 70:16
gatefold full colour sleeve with black inners
limited edition of 1000

compiled, edited, mixed and produced by mike harding & jon wozencroft
mastered by denis blackham at skye, 26th october 2012

30 years and counting is an echo of a time when the world was in a critical condition, and potentially about to blow itself into oblivion at the tail end of the cold war. as such the title is a wry reflection on the situation we find ourselves in today, where the final curtain is less likely to close, but the stakes somehow seem to be more extreme and polarised than ever.

as far as touch is concerned, it is an expression of our youthful relationship to the work. mike harding and jon wozencroft invited each of the touch artists to contribute a glimpse of their current practice to what is effectively a group show rather than a compilation. the brief was not only to celebrate a situation, but to remind each other why we are doing it, and make a kind of documentary realism.

some artists responded quickly with significant twists and returns to their signature sound and others left it to the last minute. the net result was that mike and jon mastered the lp / cd more or less as live performance in the cutting room, transition, as an expression of the vitality of the project rather than some pre-ordained historical item.

the history is built into the cover with two images of the first computer, the ‘colossus’, built in bletchley park during the early 1940’s as a means of cracking the enigma codes… here the pressure of time is at its most compressed. two contra-punctal images were shot only recently, backstage moments of touch 30 situations which as historical events, pale in comparison – they are just personal, memories in a flash.

30 years and counting is a filmic / time-based response from a collective of artists who have made a distinct impression on contemporary music and the way things go. fennesz, eleh, hildur gudnadottir, chris watson, philip jeck, biosphere… we should really list everyone. that’s what they try and do on hip-hop albums.

we started with cassettes; this project commenced as a dedication to vinyl rather than digital, a question concerning the art of recording. 30 years and counting is a manifesto after all these transformations. it is available on cd . the vinyl flares with the crackle of the present.

1st fruits of collaboration between fennesz and sparklehorse - recorded in geneva by christian fennesz and scott minor * touch regulars biosphere, philip jeck, benny nilsen [hazard], chris watson... * newcomers include us free music composer and designer tom recchion, uk's scott taylor, icelandic artists finnbogi petursson and sigtryggur berg sigmarsson, and one of sweden's premier performance artists leif elggren [the sons of god, firework edition records etc.], and one of the kings of elgaland-vargaland * uk finest organist charles matthews and classical composer marcus davidson * highly regarded japanese field recordist toshiya tsunoda

the story:

the thought of producing a compilation where the tracks were all either inspired by or more directly influenced by the organ had been frequently aired over the years. the conversations were always animated and expansive. the organ works of arvo psrt, those performed by christopher bowers-broadbent, a pupil of richard rodney bennett at the royal academy of music in london, and others, have reached a wider non-classical audience. eventually benny nilsen arranged to visit st. mary's church, warwick and work with one of england's finest, charles matthews. crawling around inside the instrument, positioning microphones most appropriately in the church, or 'capturing' the psalms composed by marcus davidson, nilsen explored the possibilities with all the familiar lust of the avant-garde. as the brief widened, so did the responses... some contributors referred to earlier versions of the organ and its often highly political usage, others explored aged instruments themselves. some studied the effects of the sounds produced on the physique and the psyche, others conceptualised the brief and either built their own or recorded natural or man-made phenomena which utilised the same basic process, wind through pipes. the organ represents the marriage between acoustic complexity and ritualised space. it is impossible not to be drawn upward, towards the spire of the church or cathedral, or to the huge and daunting forest of pipes themselves. the organ dwarfs all comers, and unlike other instruments, it is this non-musical element which makes the organ stand apart.

touch # tone 14
cd - 177 ringtones
99 tracks - 44:58.17

the process of transferring made-to-measure ringtones to your mobile phone is, at present, a fixed casino... chart hits, cod celebrity voices, action heroes, lame keyboard melodies... so the likelihood of hearing one of these on the 07.34 from the suburbs is, at present, remote, although new ranges of mobiles are on hand to promise better things. anticipating this, each of the included has been composed with exactly this eventuality in mind. they are in one way or another intended to be experienced as isolated, personal interventions: low-res loops, creature calls, in low-res environments...

in whichever form you find them here, do sample remodel and employ these humble suggestions... we assume you already agree that the cheap 'cheep cheep' tones of nokia, ericsson and the others leave a lot to be desired. but there is huge commercial possibility here, not least with the fact that these selections have not been motivated by database usage... this is far cooler, and the contributors have responded accordingly... this release shows what is possible and how far behind the phone companies actually are despite their desperation to uncover new ways of selling the next generation of phones to an already saturated market.

2004 release ; first global transmission from the kuala lumpur-based “experimental musicians and artists co-operative malaysia” , whose various members contribute 5 of the 25 tracks herein ...

the other 20 are from a who’s who of the int’l sound-research circuit and are of phenomenally high quality (the exoticity of the label’s point of origin must have been a contributing factor in getting all involved to contribute vital examples of their work instead of 2nd-tier comp-track dreck) ...

what i’m finding the most enjoyable about this set is the curatorial aspect ... the wide variety of approaches and fidelities on display somehow all blur boundaries in a highly listenable fashion (i.e. instead of segueing the work of like-minded auteurs into dovetail-like situations, the digital pieces morph into the analog into the lo-fi into the composed into the improvised ... many labels could learn volumes from the sequencing of this record alone), making this amongst the first comps to have a “soul”, so to speak...

completely essential listening, one of my favorite comps from recent times ...
