tim hecker: mirages

tim hecker’s latest full-length, mirages, is a lesson of darkness, a midnight whisper revealing its true essence to the listener: an ambient-death-metal classic in waiting.

taking inspiration from italian partigiani and the counter-attack of the anti-vichyists, hecker has issued a salvo against all tourists of melancholy, from trustafarian pseudo-leftists to the ikea nihilists of the boboist rive droite. while some artists seem eager to explore new-age or “organic” solutions to electronic music, hecker solves the rubik’s cube and penetrates the liquid magma, revealing the truths of dirty sodium light pollution, love on the rocks, and toothhunting in the garden of evil. with its motifs of eroticism and torture, militancy, and ecstatic pain, mirages also points backwards towards the viking penchant for fighting and feasting. don’t be mistaken though by insufficient musical descriptors – this is also a work of unsheathed tenderness.

indeed, hecker demonstrates a penchant for the romantic by drawing in a den of noteworthy interlocutors, including fellow montrealers le fly pan am, christof migone, david bryant, as well as his australian compatriot oren ambarchi.

having already released a half-dozen lps under a variety of guises, hecker’s mirages is the succession to the critically acclaimed radio amor (2003), released on the curious mille plateaux imprint. hecker is thrilled at returning to alien8 recordings which also released his somewhat more sentimental haunt me (2001) and my love is rotten to the core (2002). we hope you find, as we do, mirages further erodes the vapid predispositions of electronic music, uncovering a terrain where dissonance and melody coincide in a near-bohemian unison. hecker has certainly developed a unique approach to music in an increasingly overcrowded and generic field. this is a challenging work which reconciles a highly experimental approach to songcraft that is at once beautiful and unnerving. as mr. hecker explains: “mirages is the sound of the ruby-horned deer sharing sweet lies in the night.

sixth in a series of improv recordings marketed & manufactured by the fine folks over at sub rosa in belgium. each volume in this series comes in an oversized dvd-style jewel box with nice paintings & minimal information. this is the most recent (as of april, 2003) in the series, pitting sydney’s not-so-secret weapon again the swiss cracked everyday electronics kings voice crack and former nachluft drummer/sound-scientist günter müller. nice one...
audiosphere press release...
oren ambarchi - guitar & electronics
andy guhl - cracked everyday/electronics
günter müller - selected percussion, md’s, electronics
norbert möslang - cracked everyday/electronics.

...

take three swiss tourists. feed them top notch sydney rock oysters, fine hunter valley wines and get them into a recording studio with oren ambarchi. that was the challenge. this is the record.

if ambarchi, müller and the voice crack have one thing in common (beyond gastronomic excess), it is their ability to get extraordinary sounds out of everyday objects.

this one day recording session at big jesus burger in sydney highlights the mutual approach they share. there's such cohesion, wholeness and single mindedness to these pieces that makes identification of the individuals involved virtually impossible. so forget the 'who's doing what?' game. close your eyes and play 'where the hell am i?' ... rainforest, glacier, casino, ship's hull, bowling alley or five star restaurant?

awesome vinyl-only release from mms perennial oren ambarchi, featuring two side length pieces for electric guitar, bowed instruments, samples, bells, motor, cymbals & percussion - the first a studio construct “composed for performances of ‘the drifting view x’ with japanese dance troupe gekidan kaitaisha, tokyo, march 2003”, the second a “live recording abc tv studios, melbourne, feb 3 2006.”

both pieces lift off whisper-quiet, then carve a rift of sine-tone throb and bowed/brushed metal haze clear across the room. oren’s in fine form throughout; essential listening for any fan of long-form sound...

oren ambarchi

limited vinyl by the great experimental guitarist oren ambarchi from australia. a touch label recording artist, oren has been making music since 1986, creating sounds from the guitar that one would not expect to hear. on this lp two long tracks one per side, start from minimal low frequency sounds to ever growing drones of manipulated guitars...staggeringly beautiful!

ltd to 650 hand numbered!

...

oren ambarchi

oren ambarchi is an electronic guitarist and percussionist with longstanding interests in transcending conventional instrumental approaches. born in sydney in 1969, he has been performing live since 1986. his work focuses mainly on the exploration of the guitar, "re-routing the instrument into a zone of alien abstraction where it's no longer easily identifiable as itself. instead, it's a laboratory for extended sonic investigation."

the four gentlemen of the guitarcloud” double compact disc set

  • perfect grass (23:47)
  • deformed veil (38:15)
  • yellow cloud (62:25)
click the play button to hear an excerpt of "perfect grass (23:47)"
just a superb set from the penultimate eai “super-group” of oren ambarchi, christian fennesz, toshimaru nakamura, and keith rowe; each invited to the table on account of their prior association with the electric guitar (with nakamura, the wrench-in-the mechanics that he is, defaulting here to his main instrument; the “no-input mixing board.”)

moments of fennesz-ian wash and bits of oren’s bass-heavy sine-bursts peek out from between the cracks, but for the most part the set is a veritable festival of micro-detail; those fond of rowe and nakamura’s duo work will be in familiar ground, albeit with a much fuller range and a near-constant ground-hum of tonal blur.

of the 50-odd erstwhile titles yet, this is most likely the best bet for getting your initial toe wet... the others will come naturally ...
erstwhile press release...
the four gentlemen of the guitar are:

keith rowe: guitar, electronics
oren ambarchi: guitar, electronics
christian fennesz: guitar, computer
toshimaru nakamura: no-input mixing board

keith rowe, oren ambarchi, christian fennesz and toshimaru nakamura are four of the most prominent and influential musicians in experimental music today, each with extensive discographies and distinctive styles. in mid-2004, they formed the four gentlemen of the guitar (4g), and played a series of shows in europe and canada, three of which are contained on cloud. the underlying concept of 4g is to unite four artists who each began their musical explorations as guitarists, keeping that mindset as a crucial underpinning of their work as they've each explored increasingly abstract territory, both with and without guitars.

rowe's history has been well documented at this point. having mostly performed within amm until the late 90's, he's since been involved in a wide range of projects, including a slew of the most prominent erstwhile releases. he's the cornerstone musician for the label, and the 4g grouping was his idea.

ambarchi is making his erstwhile debut (except for the 7 guitar disc in the amplify 2002 box set). born in sydney in 1969, he has been performing live since 1986. his recent work as a solo artist on touch is very well known and respected, and he's been working with rowe in various small groupings since 2000. ambarchi is also co-organiser of the what is music? festival, australia's premier annual showcase of local and international experimental music.

fennesz, known to a wider audience for his studio-constructed records like endless summer and venice, is also a superb collaborative improviser, as documented on projects like fenno'berg (w/ jim o'rourke and pita), wrapped islands (w/ polwechsel), live at the lu (w/ rowe), and erstlive 004 (w/ sachiko m, otomo yoshihide, and peter rehberg).

since 1998, nakamura has been exploring the possibilities of his "no-input mixing board" in contexts ranging from solo to collaborations with rowe, günter müller, sachiko m, andrea neumann, john butcher and sean meehan. nakamura was a prominent presence throughout the amplify 2002 box set, appearing on five of the seven cds, an integral part of the good morning good night and erstlive 005 releases, and will be releasing the much-anticipated follow up to the highly acclaimed weather sky cd with rowe in early 2006.

there have been two larger group releases featuring three of these four musicians, afternoon tea (ritornell) has rowe, ambarchi and fennesz, and the 7 guitar disc on the amplify 2002 box has rowe, ambarchi and nakamura, but the 4g project is the first time all four have performed together. cloud contains three performances (from vand'ouevre, paris and victoriaville) from their seven city tour in may/june 2004, totalling over two hours of music. the widely differing aesthetics of the four musicians meld fluidly, forming hovering, delicate masses of sound. the packaging meshes rowe's striking cover painting with friederike paetzold's eyecatching design.

|| the four gentlemen of the guitar ||

at the centre of this project is the guitar, perhaps the world's most ubiquitous instrument. here we are looking at its extended possibilities - that is to say rather than summing up guitar-ness in a picasso-like way, we would be more interested in mondrianesque extensions.

christian and toshi, although both guitar players, have performed in public mostly on instruments that have become physical and musical extensions of the guitar. in my case, along with oren, we preserved the basic form of the guitar, obviously exploring its "non-guitarlike" possibilities, but always maintaining its essential "guitar-ness".

how might a japanese, an australian, an austrian and an englishman with very different musical and artistic personalities explore in real-time the world's most global instrument, incorporating boomerang loop stations, digital effects, mixing boards, computers etc.?

the quartet form "at first was a medium that allowed four gentlemen amateurs to converse musically"*, and from haydn's time became the appropriate medium that produced music of the deepest personal expression and contemplative profundity.

so here we have four gentlemen, the guitar, a conversation between the analog and the digital, the north and the south.

keith rowe

grob (germany) #grob 648 cd

keith rowe / oren ambarchi / robbie avenaimhoney pie” compact disc

  • honey pie (39:46)
grob press release...
keith rowe/oren ambarchi/robbie avenaim - honey pie

keith rowe: tabletop guitar, electronics
oren mabarchi: guitar, electronics
robbie avenaim: percussion, electronics

honey pie, recorded live in france in may 2001, is the second part of our three-part series with recordings documenting the cooperation of keith rowe and oren ambarchi. part 1 was the cd thumb (grob 432, recently re-released, rowe/ambarchi/avenaim in a quintet with oren ambarchi/sachiko m and otomo yoshihide); part 3, which will be released in nine months, will document the first real-time duo gig of ambarchi and rowe.

if thumb was about something like ”absence in presence,” about, well, the artsy trick of improvising like a quintet and sounding simply like a duo, then honey pie is a dynamic, powerful 40-minute recording. the static intimated at the beginning and lasting for four or five minutes is cautiously preserved by the musicians – rowe and ambarchi on guitars, avenaim on percussion, all three on live electronics – and this static is transformed in a constantly changing process. on thumb, the tension was produced using static (via an endless extension of a ”something”) and therefore ”disappointed,” we hear on honey pie tension sans phrase. at first there is no drone, no great sound, upon which the musicians can comfortably retire (the great sound, which then originates in the process of the improvisation is rich and complex in itself). they improvise without flourish, develop small structures of a nearly motive-like character. thanks to this, the stringency, too, of rowe’s flatness is questioned, albeit softly. honey pie thus leaves the impression of a near playful, loose session. listen to it loudly!

grob (germany) #grob 432 cd

keith rowe / oren ambarchi / sachiko m / otomo yoshihide / robbie avenaimthumb” compact disc

  • thumb (30:35)
i had a chat with oren a few months back about this blinding gig he'd played at the forum... err... instants chavires with the aforementioned lot and that, most unfortunately, it wasn't recorded as it was one of the most stimulating gigs of his young career. well... turns out it was recorded and here it is c/o felix klopotek's improv powerhouse grob. very good for us... 1 track, 30 minutes, 35 seconds. questionable fidelity, especially given the nature of the music, but that's never stopped anyone in the past... a slice of real life. in a vacuum.
grob press release...
oren ambarchi/robbie avenaim/keith rowe + otomo yoshihide + sachiko m - thumb (10.2002)

the moment before a rock band steps on stage: the amplifiers have been hooked up and are humming, the glaring flood lights are buzzing, a roadie is fiddling round with a drum set, pushes it a few centimeters until it is at the perfect place. above all the atmosphere is electrified.

this is the atmosphere the music on thumb conveys. of course a rock band will never step on stage, of course, the musicians make music the entire time (even when you don't believe it, because you don't think you can hear it! here stand, or rather sit, five musicians on stage).

this cd is the result of a recording or stage situation, happening so suddenly, that happened on may 29, 2001 in the legendary paris club, instants chavires. the trio ambarchi/avenaim/rowe (two prepared guitars, a little electronics and percussion) were on tour at the time in france (their first tour) and met the duo otomo/sachiko (guitar, turntables and sine wave generator), who are well-established and have proven themselves through uncountable recordings.

[do we have to introduce the musicians? hardly. ambarchi, rowe, yoshihide and m have strongly influenced the new improvised music of the 90's on numerous records and leave no doubt that they are playing the music of the moment in the new decade. avenaim, the percussionist, or roadie who pushes the drum set around, is a bit less well-known. he is the closest musical friend of ambarchi, both went to the same school and together worked through free jazz 15 years ago. up to today the have been playing together. his musical contribution is not a decibel less important than his friend's.]

the result of this meeting is not a hectic-unconcentrated jam session, not a labored search and then a timid find. what we hear is maximal concentration. and consolidation-not, however, in view of noise and energy. they condense their music activity into two or three lines: tender, but played all the more resolute and direct. the five play in this moment exactly as secure as if they had played together for years. thumb features the entire performance of this quintet. although it lasted only a little longer than a half-an-hour, the overview is quickly lost. have they already finished (have they even begun?)? how long have they been playing? ten minutes? twenty? an hour? at the end, their sound actually leaves not question unanswered.

thumb is the beginning of a series of cds that will focus on the cooperation of oran ambarchi and keith rowe. in spring 2003, a cd will appear from ambarchi, rowe, and avenaim, then in summer 2003 with rowe and ambarchi as duo, recorded in real time.

an eternity was coming to an end. the room grew steadier each time i closed and opened my eyes. still muddled, my thoughts drifted without taking form, reality was not yet here. i had dreamt a lot. my dreams had not been vague but sharp, frightfully realistic; i didn’t remember this but rather felt it in my body. the detailed scenes of the dreams escaped my blunt analyzing powers as i slowly returned to consciousness, only to be replaced by undefined anxiety and a feeling of the loss of something that has been important in my life.the presence of anxiety... wasn’t it true that i, my whole life, had tried to arrange my everyday life so that this anxiety wouldn’t be there? quit jobs, avoided responsibilities. like birds that use their own bodies as templates when building their nest, so had i too formed my life: to avoid anxiety was my template, my guiding light in my life.

the hours passed slowly. i looked out the window, the wind played with the leaves. remembrance of actual experiences was still rare, like driftwood in a river of time and evasive possible connections. the feeling of loneliness and unrest about the electromagnetic fields in the surroundings was worrying. there has to be a high-voltage generator in the vicinity or high-tension wires over the house. i didn’t remember the circumstances under which i was brought here, neither what the surroundings looked like, but i would examine these things later when my wounds have healed. if the fields influenced my views of life in the same way they made my nerves ring, i would not recognize myself when leaving this place. i couldn’t understand how i ended up sacrificing my independence and became drawn into this. october 2007 release; a pair of “piano music” pieces, acting as the debut collaborative single from two of contemporary experimental music’s most prolific/consistently rewarding practitioners; oren ambarchi and lasse marhaug...

those of you expecting something on par with maurizio pollini’s reading of satie’s gnossiennes might be a little shocked to find instead a fierce 12+ minute inside-piano scrape-fest, hedged with bursts of live-electronic feedback & a “hot” fidelity familiar from any number of david tudor recordings... yet at the same time not too far removed from the new blockaders’ whole gesamtnichswerk; this is anti-music at its finest...

not something for strict followers of oren’s friendly/subdued sine-guitar throb, nor lasse’s harsh wall of electronic sound; but definitely one for those whose preferences fall in the noisier end of the electro-acoustic composition/improv spectrum...

september 2007 release; the secondpop” album from the duo of chris townend (proprietor of sydney’s lovely bigjesusburger studios, also 1/2 of rand and holland) and oren ambarchi (currently tied with lasse marhaug for most titles involving him in the mms catalogue... what can i say? i’m a huge fan...)

whereas the first album was straight-up summertime sunshine jangly pop music, this adds slightly more “grit” to the mixes; little clicky sounds and background ambience, guitars are played in non-standard ways, etc... an obvious comparison would be to jim o’rourke’s drag city records (i.e. someone with a background in more outre stylings embracing the laurel canyon sound... but still keeping littlenoises & bits of abstraction in the mixes) but also the clientele (especially the reverb-heavy vocal delivery on most songs), even mid-period (i.e. pre-dad-rock) wilco.

a really, really nice record. i don’t listen to all that much contemporary pop music these days, mainly as i hear the majority of it as either redunant or lazy/throwaway... this is anything but; as meticulously assembled as oren’s touch-label records, just a little bit more “accessible” ...

lovely australianearly adopters” edition, housed in a huge fold-out poster sleeve... apparently this will also be out on staubgold on vinyl/cd in a few months...

i’ll be the same
preservation

sun is the coupling of sound artist oren ambarchi and musician-producer chris townend. the pair have been kindred spirits for many years, with townsend being a sensitive and crucial ear in engineering ambarchi's landmark solo recordings. it was their shared love for expansive pop that led them to their first musical collaboration together as sun, released on staubgold in 2003. the self-titled debut was a laidback delight of many melodic charms and artful creation, as sweet as it was wry in its lyricism. those trademarks continue with "i'll be the same", though the songs here are more freewheeling pleasures where an unaffected sense of experimentalism breezes in.

quecksilber press release...
artist: oren ambarchi & martin ng
title: vigil
format: cd
cat. #: quecksilber 1
release date: 26.05.03

"vigil" is the second duo album by australian composers oren ambarchi and martin ng from sydney after 2001's "reconnaissance" on the staubgold label. it's a dreamlike sonic excursion based upon the fluid architectural modulation of harmonics and resonances. recalling the landmark experiments of the sonic arts union (robert ashley, david behrman, alvin lucier and gordon mumma), ambarchi and ng create an enigmatic tapestry of pulsing, shimmering and shifting sound which represents a subtle and compelling realignment of eastern and western minimalist traditions.

austrian designer tina frank of mego has added two short films in mpeg format to this release which in its slow and subtle moves match perfectly with the fragile beauty of ambarchi's and ng's music.

martin ng whose main instrument is the turntable is another outstanding character in sydney's rich experimental music circuit. he released an album for the mego label with farmer's manual's hiaz gmachl, recorded for grob with jim denley and was part of 2002's "turntable hell" tour with among others otomo yoshihide and martin tetrault.

gorgeous collection of contemporary concrète/acoustmatic music in its tonal incarnation; starting with the immaculate original piece by the swiss sound-artist ralph steinbrüchel, then following suit(e) with versions by the necks’ chris abrahams, ben frost, 12k’s taylor deupree, oren ambarchi, and finally toshiya tsunoda (whom, it appears, recorded the piece as played back in a room using a microphone inside of a glass bottle!)
room40 press release...
in spring 2003 steinbrüchel received an invitation from the swiss music festival 'taktlos' in berne to contribute a track for their listening room equipped with a surround 5.1 sound system. during the two-day festival in november 2003 steinbrüchel's track 'opaque' was played back in cycle mode (among tracks from various other artists).

the listening room focused on the experience of being able to listen to music in a very quiet and large environment - unlikely to most home listening situations. additionally the possibility of working in surround gave the musicians a chance to create very special audio sculptures in the space.

this disc collects 'opaque' and reinterpretations by oren ambarchi (aus), taylor deupree (us), frost (aus), toshiya tsunoda (jp) and chris abrahams (nz).

each of the contributing artists was chosen for his unique working method (oren for his work with guitar, taylor for processed sounds, frost guitar feedback, toshiya for fieldrecordings and chris for piano). to make the remixes more varied and special, each artist received only three samples/soundfiles from the original track, but none of the artists have received the same samples or even have heard the original track by steinbrüchel before the release of the cd.

oren ambarchi / robbie avenaimclockwork” three inch fan compact disc

  • clockwork (18:28)
click the play button to hear an excerpt of "clockwork"
entirely emergizing live duo set (recorded on april 21st, 1999) of contemporary electronic guitar-gamelan and “kontakte”-lineage percussion from oren ambarchi and robbie avenaim; some of you may remember buying this in its original cdr form right around the time that mms was still in its embryonic stage(s); kudos to lawrence for making this recording available once again for the growing public...
room40 press release...
"raised on a diet of several decades' worth of renegade creatives and neglected masterpieces, we're all wise to the disappearing-act that an artist's back catalogue can perform - doubly so if their financial and/or artistic imperatives lead them to micro-release and micro-format their prodigious output. whether this is the ultimate in commodity fetishism or an over-aestheticisation of the potlatch syndrome, this process lends the private press/limited-up-the-wazoo document the kind of once-debased aura or mystique reserved for the gallery edition. uncover the mystery, they say, and you uncover the glory. and then - with the over-prescribed nature of undiscovered- gem glorification rendering the actual music somewhat underwhelming - it disappears into the air, helium balloons dropping back down from the heavens...

this is, however, no great concern vis-à-vis oren ambarchi and robbie avenaim's sucker-punch to the solar plexus, clockwork. its initial release - an edition of 100 3" cd-rs on ambarchi's jerker productions label back in 1999 - let it slide by just enough aesthetic radars to register among cognoscenti. coupled with ambarchi's solo work from the era, the recording marked a shift from the gonzo-rock of the duo's previous band, phlegm. things happen throughout clockwork that had never really happened before. recorded in front of a live audience for that "what we did on our holidays" feel, avenaim and ambarchi unravel their detourned instrumental panoply into a series of parallel universe propositions - (ie. if ambarchi's concurrent vinyl-only stacte series was alvin lucier and cluster collaborating for mego, then clockwork is mickey hart's gamelan orchestra performing ionisation.)

the scarcity of both clockwork and stacte within the sphere of known sound lent a subtle distortion to received wisdom of both ambarchi's and avenaim's development. the jump from their 1999 duo disc on tzadik, the alter rebbe's nigun, to their recent collaborative recordings with keith rowe, sachiko m, and otomo yoshihide, is indeed a wide and almost inexplicable chasm. those in contact with ambarchi's solo recordings for the touch label, or with avenaim's live performances in australia, would be partially clued in to the shifts in approach that occurred in the intervening period. this reissue of clockwork - its reinstatement in the "marketplace" for immediate edification and dissemination - is not just timely; it is also one of 2005's headiest pleasures. and that one of the most important pieces of the ambarchi/avenaim puzzle will finally achieve its deserved position within a trajectory of non-idiomatic improvisation (i'll say transitional, lest lawrence english side-swipe me,) well, one doesn't need to sound that final gong to induce the respectful applause of the concert patron.

this is, you might say, a photograph of the clockwork of time between..." - jon dale

right; so i managed to snag a few copies of this ridiculously fetish-oriented release (which comes as a picture-disc 10” record inside a picture-disc sleeve with two clear flats printed via some special process that yields black ink on one side and metallic gold on the other; different sleevings of said provide completely different designs... well done boys!) documenting a performance from january 2007 at rotterdam’s worm venue/radio station/shop by the trio of oren ambarchi, greg anderson, and atila csihar...

the music consists of greg’s toppling low-end bass patterns, oren’s sine-tone guitar throb & detuned feedback, and atila’s coffin-scratchings... just what you’d expect. it’s actually pretty long for a 10” (over 26 minutes or so) but not so as to deter from repeat listenings...

the second vinyl only release by the the collaborative project between: oren ambarchi (guitar, analog electronics), greg anderson (bass/subsonics) & attila csihar (vokills, invokations).

maximum volume yields maximum results

“black one is the sixth and darkest sunn0))) album yet featuring very special guests oren ambarchi, wrest (leviathan/lurker of chalice/ twilight) malefic (xasthur, twilight) and john weise (bastard noise). a showing of progressive yet primitive pure subsonic power committed to tape. tonal magma explosions created under the influence of utter blackest atmospheres, sunn0))) |endlessly seeks to push boundaries and demolish pre-conceived ideas of their emminence.

with their previous two albums, white1 and white2, sunn0))) explored deep dynamics, ambience, and introduced different instrumentation to their recordings: vocals (performed by julian cope on white1 and attila csihar/ mayhem on white2), percussion (performed by joe preston on white1) and sub-sonic keyboards (performed by rex ritter/ jessamine-fontanelle).

black one continues this collaborative tradition in a rather down direction. sinister vocal performances courtesy of wrest (known for his solo work under the names leviathan and lurker of chalice) and malefic (known for his solo work under the name xasthur) literally call from beyond the grave. unorthodox and experimental recording methods were used to obtain the petrifyingly eerie tone of the voices on this album. for the epic side 4 piece, "bathory erzebet", sunn0))) procured a casket then loaded it into a cadillac hearse, and locked malefic inside with only a microphone and a severe sense of claustrophobia. the result is truly suffocating and disturbing!

the composition of black one benefits from somewhat extensive live action throughout 2004/2005 bringing more cohesive overall structure to the table. "cry for the weeper" and "it took the night to believe" incorporate atonal melodic interplay within their massive skeletons. mammoth giants crushing valleys of the drowned. listeners will still experience core sunn0))) recording fundamentals like being completely overwhelmed by massive sub-sonic droning guitar riffs. but with black one sunn0))) takes it 10 steps below the others by intensely obsessing over making the overall ambience of this album as bleak crushing, and devoid of light as only they possibly could.”

staubgold press release...
staubgold 79 sun - "i'll be the same" cd

staubgold is proud to present "i'll be the same", the second recording from australian duo sun.

sun is the coupling of sound artist oren ambarchi and musician-producer chris townend. the pair have been kindred spirits for many years, with townend being a sensitive and crucial ear in engineering ambarchi's landmark solo recordings.

it was their shared love for expansive pop that led them to their first musical collaboration together as sun, released on staubgold in 2003 (staubgold 39 2cd/2lp). the self-titled debut was a laidback delight of many melodic charms and artful creation, as sweet as it was wry in its lyricism.

those trademarks continue with "i'll be the same", though the songs here are more freewheeling pleasures where an unaffected sense of experimentalism breezes in. there's a special kind of warmth to "i'll be the same" that feels easy, a reflection of the state of play when these two come together. and with ambarchi now residing in melbourne and townend's imminent move to tasmania, along with multiple touring and recording commitments for both, really the only thing about sun that isn’t easy is finding the time to make it happen.

"i'll be the same" is finally a beaming signal of more to follow.

2001 full length recorded by chris townsend and oren ambarchi in sydney, originally released on the preservation music label, now reissued as a double cd/lp set with remixes... i sussed it out for pitchforkmedia.com thusly:

the side of oren ambarchi no one gets to hear: his complete & total infatuation with all things brian wilson. no no-wave caterwaul. no coldly calculated guitar-sine throbs. no drones. just good old-fashioned summertime jangly sunshine music. some of this reminds me of low (whispered couplets over near-imperceptable acoustic tone clusters) or maybe even the clientele sans-baggage. i have nothing but respect for oren following through on his various seemingly contradicting musical visions. hearing him lay his boyish tenor bare on record for posterity only makes me like him more. and the songs are quite nice, catchy, hummable, am-radio stuff. lovely.
staubgold press release...
staubgold 39 sun » s/t« 2cd/2lp

"heartfelt melodies and crystalline guitars play throughout throbbing atmospherics. it all makes for soulful listening." (rolling stone australia).

staubgold proudly presents the self-titled debut album from the sydney duo sun, licensed from australia's preservation records for exclusive worldwide release, and accompanied by a complete bonus remix album feat. mixes of all original tracks by artists like hrvatski, mapstation, pluramon, rafael toral, christoph heemann and pimmon.

sun is the unusual pairing of world renowned experimental guitarist oren ambarchi and australian music figurehead chris townend. sun confirms its authors as two truly original music minds, a languid and sweet pop creation, brimming with sly invention in its classicist frame. these songs simply float into the consciousness with a grand air and sublimely delicate touch. there's an easy warmth to sun as well as some darker surprises for added depth and nuance.

staubgold 32 oren ambarchi & keith rowe - "flypaper" cd

these recordings depart wildly from anything that either rowe or ambarchi have produced before. this speaks volumes when you consider the combined weight of their explorations to this point. amazingly, neither player falls back on past gestures or comfortable proven techniques.

the result is four startling electro-acoustic environments. only david tudor's "rainforest" has gone so far to create a world that is at once highly electronic, yet totally organic, without resorting to base mimicry of natural sounds. it evokes the sea, an immovable mass of fluidity, in a way that roland kayn would admire. but having said that, there is little to compare this to. the four pieces on this disc could be field recordings from lost civilizations.

comes in digipak with artwork by keith rowe.

damo suzukithe swiftsure session” double long playing record set

  • side 1
  • side 2
  • side 3
3-sided double lp (4th side is blank) by can vocalist damo suzuki’s “network” (essentially... damo and a revolving cast of player-enthusiasts drawn from the pool of such in each locale damo visits whilst on his “never ending tour”), recorded live - direct to metal-mother/plate, no less - in a record mastering/pressing plant in melbourne, australia, in late 2004 (possibly the quickest turnaround from recording to its subsequent release in the history of... records).

for this performance/recording edition, the network consisted of damo on vocals, touch-label improv-minimal guitarist supreme (and longtime mms favorite) oren ambarchi on guitar, edmondo ammendola on bass, ollie olsen on synth, emil sarjia on guitar, and davey williams (presumably not the alabamian improv-guitarisy, but then again who knows anything for sure) on drums.

the quintet run through a single 3-side-long slow-burner, keeping the can oeuvre in close-check (oren, particularly, does a great job in channeling the late michael karoli’s aura via his minimalist echoplexed axe-weaving). in my mind the group provide as sympathetic a resonance to damo’s mythic intonement as do cul de sac (damo’s most visible recent sparring partners, as documented on the fantastic “abhayamudra” double-disc on strange attractors).

peculiarities of the recording process lend a unique sheen to the vibe of the whole project; for example, on the first and third sides there’s actually music in-progress from the second you put the needle on the very edge of the lead-in groove (nice touch), plus each side ends in a perfectly synced lock-groove. the fidelity is fantastic, what you’d expect from skipping a step or three of the recording/mastering/cutting/plating/manufacturing process (in fact, this music hasn’t touched any digital storage medium whatsoever... no 44.1k hard limit on the high end here folks...). and no need to pontificate further on the volume of soul-destroying power of the object itself and/or the music contained therein...

electric guitars, organ, samples, bells, percussion and motorised cymbal recorded at bjb studios, sydney with additional overdubs made at home 2005-2007. gratitude to fairport convention and boris d hegenbart.

oren ambarchi is a composer and multi-instrumentalist with longstanding interests in transcending conventional instrumental approaches. his work focuses mainly on the exploration of the guitar, "re-routing the instrument into a zone of alien abstraction where it’s no longer easily identifiable as itself. instead, it’s a laboratory for extended sonic investigation". (the wire, uk).

7" vinyl was the quintessential format for popular music. today, it is an undervalued and mostly promotional medium, used as a fetishistic signpost to a time of musical authenticity and a "healthy" popular culture. it might seem like another retrograde step to launch a vinyl series just as the download format threatens to dominate, and indeed there is an element of "the rear view mirror"... the generation of touch artists who grew up with vinyl [and cassette] still feeling a strong emotional attachment to it. this series is more than that... an overtly critical, non-digital statement is supported by treatments of audio work which cannot be applied to digital formats - the sonic texture, the use of a locked groove, the a & the b and the additional dimension of the visual counterpoint. as for the aspect of audience participation, we choose not to specify the rpm on the label, encouraging the listener to experiment with playback options and personal preferences. an attempt to make music that works at both speeds. the front cover might actually be the back cover...
