western classics, the sixth overall album by o-type (members of legendary bay area hard-art genius mx-80 sans singer rich stim), facilitates a tightly guided, dark venture into the heavy, multi-rhythm electronic tendencies within a six-string framework that references the sustained tones of morton feldman to ennio morricone to pete cosey.

this is not a tribute per se to the films represented as song titles ("mean streets," "the searchers," "out of the past") though each musical venture takes a nod to the cinematic view before remorphing and adding layers of abstraction. the pieces follow everything from minimal melodic patterns to fractured beats to concrete outtakes that seem ripped from miles davis's on the corner.

the berkeley, california collective o-type -- guitarist bruce anderson, sampler/sound sculptor dale sophiea, and drummers mark weinstein and dave mahoney -- returns with lugubrious. continuing their explorations and deconstruction into sound o-type returns with its most focused and startling document, the fourth volume, in the new edge series. logging into the finer details of glitch expansion, from behind the mixing desk sophiea draws out the micro-rhythms allowing them to fester and consume the rich tapestries of anderson's crowing guitar all the while building backdrops of phase-shifting drones, tape works, and chunks of music concrete.

strict signals the end of the silent years from mx-80/o-type members bruce anderson (guitar) and dale sophiea (sampler) with help from usual cohorts dave mahoney (drums), jim hrabetin (guitar) and marc weinstein (drums). after 25 years of making music together the next phase has been entered: they call this new edge, and strict is the first of five recordings in the new edge series. tearing the seams of music tradition and history, sophiea splices the tattered ends against anderson's warped tone and anti-melodic flair.
