camera lucida
line_030 dvd

line is proud to announce the release of its first dvd, camera lucida. the project by russian/american installation and video artists, evelina domnitch and dmitry gelfand and developed in collaboration with scientific laboratories in japan, germany, russia and belgium.

camera lucida (chamber of light or lucidity) is a 3-dimensional sonic observatory that directly transforms sound into light by employing a phenomenon known as sonoluminescence: ultrasound, propagating within a liquid, triggers the formation and implosion of micro-bubbles that reach temperatures as high as are found on the sun, and emit light in the shape of sound waves. the authors of the installation, evelina domnitch and dmitry gelfand, joined forces with multiple sound artists to create the sonochemical compositions presented on this dvd.

this dvd also contains a data partition with uncompressed high resolution audio files of all the works.

evelina domnitch and dmitry gelfand create sensory immersion environments that merge physics, chemistry and computer science with uncanny philosophical practices. having dismissed all forms of fixative and recording media, domnitch and gelfand's installations exist as ever-transforming phenomena offered for observation. because these rarely seen manifestations take place directly in front of the observer without being distorted and flattened onto a screen, they often serve to vastly extend the observer's sensory envelope.

their works have been exhibited worldwide, including shows at v2 institute for unstable media (rotterdam, netherlands), nijo castle (kyoto, japan), museum of dreams (st. petersburg, russia), i-20 gallery (new york, usa), die schachtel (milan, italy) and tesla (berlin, germany).

"camera lucida is a highly introspective immersive spatial art work creating a fleeting ephemeral materiality by intersecting ultrasound with hyperlight... in essence the creation of a sonic aurora. domnitch and gelfand's piece rejects any possibility to be fixed in space and time, but rather offers up the very definition of an unstable work of art, existing entirely for and within the perceptive realm of the viewer." - stephen kovats, director of transmediale 2008

due to the detailed and subtle visual nature of this work and phenomenon the artists have chosen to use pal over ntsc encoding to maintain the maximum resolution possible for the movie and sound files. this dvd is region free and can be played on any computer dvd drive. no region switching is necessary for television screen viewing, it can only playback on a pal or multi-system dvd player. playback in a darkened space with monitor brightness turned up is encouraged.

noto. telefunkentelefunken is a normal audio cd release.

this cd contains 30 tracks combining audio and visual information for tv. the first 20 pieces are line constructs based on impulse frequencies, the last ten are test frequencies from 50-8000 hz and white noise.

for best results please use a »blacktrinitron-tv« from sony connect the cd-out (chinch) and the television set via »scart« adapter for the s-vhs input.

tracks 01 - 20 impulse to line
tracks 21 - 30 testtones

"ok. noto won the 'golden nica' (highest honors' at the prix ars electronica festival) this year. this is a mixed-media noto ep. mixed media in that there's both audio and visual information on the cd. how you use this cd is you wire your cd player into your vcr, the left channel into the video input, the right into the audio input (although its irrelevant which you plug where as they're identical signals). then you sit back and you watch, and you listen, and you learn. and it works. sonically it's a series of rising tones and test jolts. visually it's a bunch of wavering (damn helical scan) horizontal lines of growing thickness, occasional bursts of pure white, often complete darkness (echoes of kubelka's 'arnulf rainer' abound). it's either a carefully plotted exercise or a complete happy accident. highly enjoyable either way, especially in shuffle mode (some tracks are very short, others are longer)." -- hrvatski

the hidden city
sound portraits from göteborg
sr219

the book "the hidden city, people and places in gothenburg" is an exploration of the open and hidden perspectives of this north european harbour town by journalist and writer magnus haglund and photographer stefan schneider. through 28 chapters and 40 colour photographs they investigate the cultural and political life of gothenburg, from 1850, through the industrial period, to contemporary challenges and transformations. the book is published by glänta produktion, an independent book and magazine publisher, based in gothenburg.

why is gothenburg an interesting place? this is a city with a specific cosmopolitical history, where for example the east indian company, started in 1731, had its base and through its trading a lot of the wealth and property of the country had its upswing in the 18th and 19th centuries. the culture of trading meant an atmosphere of independence and a sense of both belonging and not belonging to the swedish state. this is to be reflected in the gothenburg version of the liberal tradition, something which is investigated and makes up one part of the book: what does this social liberalism mean today, when it is confronted with the multicultural situation and political tensions like the riots during the eu-summitt-meeting in june 2001? to transform, to question, to dream in new patterns: this is one of the themes of the book. through conversations with writers and politicians, djs and historians, and through situationist-inspired walkings-dérives through the city, the complexity of the town - which had quite a solid identity but now is interestingly insecure - is outlined and elicited. from the old city to the young one, through industrial areas and electronic soundscapes, the miscellanous character comes through, the productive oppositions. the city disturbs us.

the cd "the hidden city" consists of some 15 sound portraits from the city, by artists that are featured in the book or have an interesting relationship with certain places or addresses in gothenburg. like carsten nicolai/alva noto who contributes with a remix/complete reconstruction of opus 1, party, by the gothenburg composer rune lindblad (1923-1991) who is interviewed in the book, in the chapter concerning the history of the radium record label, run by carl michael von hausswolff and ulrich hillebrand in the 1980s. the dj/musician christoffer berg (here under the name christoffer brus), is doing a soundportrait of a small pond, photographed by stefan schneider in the book, and written about in a small passage as a possible place for the famous haiku by zen poet basho ("the old pond/frog jums in/splash!"). christina kubisch, sound artist from berlin, has made a recording of the old mechanical carillon from the 18th century, in the belfry of the christina church. minimalist composer peter hansen is painting picture of the frozen winter landscape in the archipelago of gothenburg in his chamber orchestra piece winter air. the record is a collage of the city, just like the book.
