esp-disk’ (usa) #esp 1015 cd

milford gravespercussion ensemble” compact disc

  • nothing 5-7 (2:37)
  • nothing 11-10 (6:25)
  • nothing 19 (7:30)
  • nothing 13 (5:16)
  • nothing (11:54)
2008 release ; milford graves’ only esp session as a leader, hovering through a multiplex of pan-trajectorial shrapnelry with only fellow drummer sunny morgan in tow ... antithetical to the rigid, formalized music of xenakis’ percussion pieces (to which this is often, hilariously, compared) ; the flow flows & the two get down to some fine third-mind group-zones ... completely incredible.

milford graves - percussion ensemble

percussionist milford graves recorded his first and only esp-disk' recording on august 5th, 1966 along with fellow percussionist, the late sonny morgan. according to milford graves, the titles were given numbers according to how many beats were in each measure. milford graves has been one of the main drummers in the free mode scene (known for skillful inclusion of asian and african rhythmic ingredients into his solos). he worked with the new york art quartet, giuseppi logan, albert ayler, don pullen, andrew cyrille and many more. this unique combination of percussion conversations between milford graves is a welcomed addition in the new series of digipak re-issues. liner notes, photos and more... digitally remastered from the original tapes.

personnel

milford graves: drums, bells, gongs, shakers
sunny morgan: drums, bells

esp-disk’ (usa) #esp 1007 cd

giuseppe loganquartet” compact disc

  • tabla suite (5:49)
  • dance of satan (6:20)
  • dialogue (8:25)
  • taneous (11:57)
  • bleeker partita (15:37)
2008 release ; one of my personaltop 5esp-disk’ sessions is this, giuseppe logan’s debut, fronting a quartet with later mingus sideman don pullen, free-drummer extraordinaire milford graves (free tabla !!! listen to the sound-sample) and eddie gomez ... sounds like the weight of the earth, collapsing inward through itself, only to be re-formed through the eye of the nucleus ; organized chaos incarnate ...

new york art quartet

roswell rudd assembled the newly formed new york quartet for an afternoon recording session at bell sound studios in midtown manhattan. they were joined by a small, youthful appearing individual, the poet amiri baraka. their engineer was the late art crist, an accomplished pianist. i was introduced to lewis worrell, amiri baraka and john tchicai. the group was short lived. i heard them again 40 years later, when they reassembled for a concert at the south street seaport in new york city, opening for sonic youth at the invitation of thurston moore. lewis worrell, who had vanished from the scene, was replaced on bass by reggie workman.

personnel

milford graves: percussion
leroi jones: vocals
roswell rudd: trombone
john tchicai: alto saxophone
lewis worrell: bass
