mika vainiolife (...it eats you up)” double long playing record set

  • in silence a scream takes a heart (13:12)

  • throat (2:30)
  • mining (5:18)
  • napoleon (1:39)
  • open up and bleed (8:51)

  • crashed (6:10)
  • and give us our daily humiliation (5:24)
  • cage (1:20)

  • conquering the solitude (5:05)
  • a ravenous edge (8:59)
july 2011 release ; man, judging by the cover it looks like vainio got fucked up ... i hope he’s >ok !!!

anyways, neat turn-of-events (musically speaking) from one of my all-time favorite musicians ; this almost black-metal-leaning (true, that’s like saying “jonestown-leaning” these days ... it’s either trve kvlt bm or it’s not) set of guitar-centric pieces retains the dynamic push-pull of his electric / electronically-sourced work (listen to the sound-sample to your left ... wait for it ... bloosh) ; the beats are slown to a halt & bathed in a nasty slap-back that provokes violent thought ... killer record !!!

emego 124v / mika vainio
life (...it eats you up)
2lp

release date 26.07.2011

all tracks written by mika vainio, except open up and bleed by iggy pop / james williamson

whereas previous works by mika vainio have utilised guitar, life (… it eats you up) is the first to use the instrument as its primary sound source. a fascinating, sometimes disturbing and deeply personal work this new 10 track set bears all the hallmarks (exacting attention to detail of tone, rhythm and texture) of vainio's previous works with some stunning surprises, such as his cover version of the stooges' 'open up and bleed'.

tracks such as ‘mining’ hark bark to the banging beat excesses of pan sonic, with ‘crashed’ and ‘and give us our daily humiliation’ and the opening ‘in silence a scream takes a heart’ reveal a new intensity to vainio’s work and is yet another superb addition to his brilliant catalogue.

lucio capece & mika vainio: trahnie cd
release date: 02.03.2009

11 tracks
total time: 59:15

lucio capece: soprano saxophone, bass clarinet, preparations, mixer-sax feedback, sruti box
mika vainio: electronics and treatments, electric guitar, cymbal

recorded in berlin 2006-2008
artwork: tina frank

on first glance lucio capece and mika vainio seem unlikely partners. two standard bearers at opposing poles of extremity, both sonically and geographically. lucio from argentina and rooted in a traditions of jazz and improv, while mika hailing from finland sourced in early 90s electronic and industrial scenes.

however, they both share an alarming attention to detail when it comes to their audio compositions, and neither are afraid of pushing boundaries of abstraction to the limit. with this in mind its with great pleasure that editions mego issues their first album as a duo. recorded over a 2 year period in berlin (their common chosen home), its as startling as it is visceral. delicate as it is extreme. huge blasting slabs of concrete sax geometrically oppose sonic taps of electronic sound, which bring about a fascinating sound palette.

the opening ‘ujellus’ is both piercing and soothing; ‘juurake’ combines pure sweat with cold emotion; tense environmental scrapes flesh out on ‘ahuyenta temores’. from the pounding machinist overdrive on ‘tolmavuo’ to the poignant melancholy of ‘mañana’.

its all here.

significant for the close interaction between experimental forms of music, art and science label noton produced a new series of 12 "20 minutes" cds. the artists`concept behind is the creation of a piece for the last 20 minutes of the year 1999 as a cutting edge of the past century.

20’ to 2000 is a monthly magazine-like cd released for the last year of the millenium. in the 12 issues 12 artist were invited to transform their ideas - possibly a manifest of the millenium - designed for the series using new technologies and characteristic translucent materials of noton.

the series was awarded the "golden nica" from ars electronica in 2000.

mika vainiobehind the radiators” seven inch single record

  • behind the radiators (1) (2:52)

  • behind the radiators (2) (2:58)
july 2008 release ; a surface-noise heavy experiment (no, it’s not a bad pressing ; quite the opposite actually) from pan(a)sonic’s mika vainio ... the natural rhythms of record lead-in/out grooves are abetted by a machine-music lineage static cloud, which, of course, ends in a locked groove on each side ...

ts06 mika vainio: behind the radiators

recorded in berlin, february 2008. special thank you for lary 7.

touch sevens series of 7" vinyl

7" vinyl was the quintessential format for popular music. today, it is an undervalued and mostly promotional medium, used as a fetishistic signpost to a time of musical authenticity and a "healthy" popular culture. it might seem like another retrograde step to launch a vinyl series just as the download format threatens to dominate, and indeed there is an element of "the rear view mirror" ... the generation of touch artists who grew up with vinyl [and cassette] still feeling a strong emotional attachment to it. this series is more than that ... an overtly critical, non-digital statement is supported by treatments of audio work which cannot be applied to digital formats - the sonic texture, the use of a locked groove, the a & the b and the additional dimension of the visual counterpoint. as for the aspect of audience participation, we choose not to specify the rpm on the label, encouraging the listener to experiment with playback options and personal preferences. an attempt to make music that works at both speeds. the front cover might actually be the back cover ...
