metal rouge - ephemeroptera 05

the final volume in the ephemeroptera series, the final release on seymour records and the first release to feature a trio formation of metal rouge with caitlin c. mitchell on drums.

three tracks: two slow burning caverns of reverbed strings and one brutal trio blow-out dedicated to our favourite physicist. when cities fall silent, when our species fails itself, when the facade of sentience finally breaks - there still at the bottom of streams and rivers: caddisflies and mayflies spinning their webs....

april 2010 release ; blistering four- “songtrip from andrew scott, helga fassonaki, and new recruit caitlin mitchell ...

showing a bit of their new zealand heritage here, the band ramble through a real firecracker of a set, rife with long stretches of guitar lift-off, “space-whispervocals, and that undeniablecavemanbeat that anchors just so many dead c / flying nun sides ... ultra-crisp studio recordings strip away some of the mystery-layers, while leaving all of the oomph particles intact ... excellent.

metal rouge
trails ec001 lp

after a period of semi-hibernation and technological downgrading metal rouge are back with the first full length missive by their new trio formation. on trails lifers helga fassonaki (lapsteel/vocals) and andrew scott (guitar) are joined by true-crime aficionado caitlin mitchell (drums) for a free floating investigation into lew welch’s mist-ridden disappearance into the norcal wilderness on one side and a raging fit of white magic against urban-planning hell on the other. mumbling low-fidelity chord flares, dual slide attacks and reverb-drenched vocal confusion underwritten by stuttering free cymbal play and outright rockist brutalism combine to make this perversely their most approachable release yet. come get lost.

recorded at green machines 09, mastered by pete swanson, photo art by lemule barbour. edition of 300.

metal rouge
"three for malachi ritscher"

rs-45
cd
edition of 300

after a number of cd-r's, tapes and other underground ephemera, 'three for malachi ritscher' is the first proper cd by los angeles free thinkers andrew scott and helga fassonaki. through ringing passages of guitar, pedal steel, and wordless vocals, this disc climbs to thoughtless vistas of microtones and gushing feedback that inevitably implodes into vast reverberant spaces only to begin the cycle again and again. as a point of entry, the duo's craft can be seen as the joining of their love of many disparate musical forms, from the folk music of the middle east & asia to the underground histories of japan & new zealand, all mainlined through damaged delay and distortion via their own individual visions.

comes in a heavy black on black offset printed arigato pak.

february 2010 release ; first solo thing in a couple of years (i seem to recall a digitalis disc in late 2008) from metal rouge’s helga fassonaki, here channeling the beyond via her vociferous vocal & guitar blare, accompanied only by bootleg tapes of milford graves & chris corsano’s drumming ...
stunned press release...

yek kooi saw myself c27 (stunned no. 69)

a lone voice etches straight to dictaphone the vibrations which have been petrified far too long in mere stone & silicone. identity awoken in a night of raw fidelity, this oracle’s expression inhabits trance tones and punk-chant poesis. gouge out your eye and trade it in for better ears, because helga fassonaki’s solo project yek koo is back after a nearly two-year hiatus. quite a spirited fever has accumulated since this half of la’s metal rouge performed her ‘psychic atonement for land deaths’ on digitalis. ‘i saw myself’ shatters any restricting mirror of our species with yek koo’s dynamically expanded vocal range and we are left freed, finding peace among the shards and surrender in the pieces.

special hand numbered edition of 111 pro-dubbed & imprinted c27 tapes with double-sided die cut color jcard and insert.

november 2009 release ; deluxe cd / dvd combo covering a series of performances given at the titular event in 2007 by a great selection of contemporary and historic sound artists & instrument builders :: akio suzuki, ernie althoff, bart hopkin, marcelempiricalbear (performing here with rosy parlane), phillip dadson, metal rouge’s helgayek koofassonaki, tom nunn, walter kitundu, adam willets, and more ...

phil dadson organized the event to showcase both the instruments themselves as well as the builders’ ability to perform / improvise on their own creations ... the event itself was laid out akin to derek bailey’s “company week” ; many of the participants partake in ad hoc groupings (including one intense pile-up w/ pretty much everyone involved) in addition to “demo’ing” their creations via soloshowcases” ...

luxury cd / dvd edition c/o the new zealand atoll label (same that released the fantastic douglas lilburn set - now sadly o/p although i’m hearing rumors of a mid-line reissue early in 2010) in a 6-panel digipak with a lovely matte 12-page booklet offering tons of close-ups of the instruments & players ... completely different tracklist / content for the cd & dvd, with almost 3 hours of self-built instrumental overload ...

highly recommended !!!
atoll press release...

s3d (ear & eye) presented a world of fresh sonics from new and unexpected sources with names as idiosyncratic and offbeat as the players and their inventions; analopos, blue, mothics, shimsaw, zitherum, gloopspring, crustacean, savart's wheel . . & the list goes on.

seven innovators in their field of experimental musical instrument building and performance travelled to auckland to join with 5 local practitioners for three packed days of public workshops and performances, where acoustical, physical, electronic and virtual worlds came together in a unique chemistry.

akio suzuki (japan), bart hopkin, yek koo (helga fassonaki), tom nunn (usa), walter kitundu (tanzania / us), graeme leak, ernie althoff (australia), with marcel bear, sam morrison, james mccarthy, adam willetts & phil dadson (new zealand).

s3d has its genesis in rev, a 5 day worlds-first festival, celebrating musical instrument invention and performance at the power house in brisbane in 2003, where international contributors bart hopkins (usa), david toop, scanner (uk) & phil dadson (nz) were invited to join with local artists for a week of performances, seminars, exhibitions and installations. s3d differs by focussing on builder/performers with improvising skills to work solo and collaboratively through the three days of sonic exploration.

s3d celebrates the magic of the new and unexpected with musical instruments and sounds that blur boundaries between art and music.

generously supported by: the nz/japan exchange foundation, creative nz, auckland city & deloitte

held march 17, 18, 19, 2007, galatos theatre, as part of ak07.
