merzbow / the hatersmerzbow & the haters” compact disc

  • merzbow - isomorphism (17:42)
  • the haters - jopa (13:14)
  • g.x. jupitter-larsen & masami akita - untitled collaboration (30:34)
september 2006 release ; cd issue of this 1987 cassette release (originally : banned production bp-20) re-mastered (by john wiese, no less) & re-launched to undoubtedly a much, much larger potential interest-base than was extant during it’s initial run ...

three pieces ; a solo by each (merzbow’s is a brutal 17 minutes of screeching high-end whine, g.x.’s sounds like massed choral singing run through a proco rat) then a duo (the pick of the litter, with some heavy channel separation making it easy to spot each party’s contributions independently) ...

merzbow / oren ambarchicat’s squirrel” long playing record

  • cat’s squirrel (1)

  • cat’s squirrel (2)
march 2013 release ; ... blistering duo-set wherein oren ambarchi’s guitar & electronic throb meets the skittering churn of masamimerzbowakita’s synth & laptop ...
black truffle press release...
cat's squirrel presents a live recording of masami akita and oren ambarchi’s performance in campbelltown, australia in may 2012. although akita and ambarchi have known one another since 1993 and performed together as part of larger ensembles, this was their first performance as a duo.

together they create a massive wall of sound that moves from the cavernous to the blisteringly psychedelic, laying down shifting low-end structures over which pointillist details ricochet across the stereo field. akita and ambarchi s voices blend together into a sonic morass, ambarchi’s set-up expanded to include extra electronics and a spring reverb unit in addition to his signature guitar textures, and akita utilizing both analogue and digital sound sources.

moving through a number of episodes, from deluges of reverberated metal screeches to rapid-fire iterations of visceral electronic tones, the record reaches a high point mid way through the second side, where akita’s electronics gradually thin out into a stream of skipping chirps and screeches while around him ambarchi builds up a dense mass of phasing low end guitar tones, the duo patiently developing an impenetrable wall of ecstatic, psychedelic noise.

merzbowmicrokosmos | volume 1” long playing record

  • a side (18:00)

  • b side (16:32)
november 2009 release ; first title in an ongoing series between bn’s graham moore & masami akita, concerned with issuing masami’s early collage work(s) as full-bleed lp covers/backs, each housing a selection of early merzbow materials ...

while the early 80s neo-dada-esque collages are well & good, the piece of music on the lp (recorded last year) shows masami in rare form, with only an arsenal of electronics & a some borderline “funky” drumming (merzbow breaks !!! raer !!!) ... the sound is at once propulsive & a void of distortion(s) & grit ; both marks of his best work ...

for those of us die-hard merzbow fan(atic)s all but apathetic to the wave after wave of new material(s) flooding the market these days ; this series purports to be the breath of fresh air we need - esp. as merzbow vinyl (in this case a lovely multi-color swirl) is excruciatingly scarce ...

summer 2008 repress of this june 1996 release (itself the “unreleased companion to rainbow electronics, released in 1990 on alchemy”) ... classic slice of 90s merzbow ...
dexter’s cigar press release...
perhaps most excitingly of all is the one and only merzbow release we’ve got in our extended catalog — the dexter’s cigar cd entitled rainbow electronics ii. the only dexter’s cigar album that ever had its own t-shirt (out of print, sadly…and no, it’s not coming back. we're not there yet, kids)

this was recorded back in the old days of merzbow releases – analog tape, not laptop, but even then with a seamless quality that looked toward the coming technology. merzbow was aware of noise music’s ghettoization as “industrial music” and created these recordings as a demonstration of the colorful nature of his own private noise.

rainbow electronics ii has been out of print for seven or eight years now, but listening to it again brings the color back into our cheeks. if you made the mistake of missing this the first time around, hunt a copy down for yourself now – and play it loud! the only way to learn from the mistakes of the past is to not make them again — isn't that what ol' shakespeare so famously said? or wait, was is einstein? if we could reissue those guys' records too, we would, okay?

hahaha @ “father of french electronic music (!!!),” “forerunner of japanese electronic music,” and “140 gm vinyl; the quality is superior to thick 180 gm” - that comedy trifecta aside, this far exceeds my somewhat lofty expectations of what a heldon/merzbow collaboration could amount to ...

agreed, we’re deep in the digital age ; as such i didn’t expect a straight twin vcs3/synthi blowout, but the laminar granular filigree the pair get up to herein suits contemporary sensibilites just fine ... not a mind-blower, just a damn good job in finding common-ground by two polar-opposite denizens of electronic sound ...
dirter promotions press release...
richard pinhas / merzbow - 'keio line'

an incredible collaboration that sweeps across the generations of electronic music.

richard pinhas is internationally recognized as one of france's major experimental musicians: the "father" of french electronic music. he was the founder of heldon, a band whose violent fusion of electronics and guitar in the '70s rivalled the german electronic school. as a guitar player he has been compared to robert fripp. cited as an influence by many electronic musicians, richard pinhas has helped to define the spacemusic genre. since founding the seminal spacerock band heldon in 1974, pinhas has released over 15 albums, had involvement in dozens more and shaped the way we listen to music today. masami akita aka merzbow is the forerunner of japanese electronic music, and for the last 20 years plus, has been at the top of his game ploughing more and more extreme sonic territories.

this release, recorded in tokyo in october 2007, will surprise a lot of people in its sheer beauty. this is a collaboration that works in the true sense of the word, with each artist complimenting the other over six long sprawling tracks each occupying the whole of a side.

the set comes housed in a gloss laminated sleeve on 140 gm vinyl - yes, that’s 140 gm vinyl; the quality is superior to thick 180 gm (and we have finally had this proved to us by a very patient expert in this field) and is limited to just 1000 copies.

recorded at studio gok sound, tokyo april 7 2010 by hamamoto yohei.
produced by masami akita and lasse marhaug.
cut by rashad becker at dubplates & mastering, berlin

cover design by lasse marhaug.

masami akita and lasse marhaug have been working together since the mid 90ies. the first release on marhaug's (now deleted) label jazzassin records in 1995 was the "first rock" split single. in 2001 merzbow and jazzkammer (marhaug's project with john hegre) released a live album. later, akita and marhaug executed several live collaborations, but often with other artists such as hair stylistics and jim o'rourke.

in 2010 they finally got together to record as duo. recorded at gok sound studios in tokyo the results can now be heard as "mer mar".

made using a combination of scrap metal screeching; analogue synths; and enough effect pedals to give you overweight with most airline companies, ‘mer mar’ is a tour de force for both of these noise veterans, hinting to some classic 80s merzbow jams such as material action.

author, activist, painter and sound artist masami akita had been at the foreground of experimental music for over 25 years. inspired by psychedelic rock, free jazz, early electronic composition as well the physical arts, especial kurt schwitters' merzbau, masami akita has created a musical language all his own.

dolphin sonar is merzbow's full length protest album against the annual brutal slaughtering of some 2,500 dolphins in taiji, wakayama prefecture japan. this is an angry album full of beats, blasts and broken glass. clattering smashes are pursued by by pulsing analog whirls like the heart of a dolphin being chased through the bloodied waters of taiji. filtered blasts of pummel and sound slaughter.

author, activist, painter and sound artist masami akita had been at the foreground of experimental music for over 25 years. inspired by psycedelic rock, free jazz, early electronic composition as well the physical arts, especial kurt schwitters' merzbau, masami akita has created a musical language all his own.

merzbear is the sixth merzbow release in his utterly essential merz series for important records.

merzbear pulses and pounds with distorted droning heavy guitar feedback, pulsing noise-blasts and swirling analog sounds of akita's distinct ems sythi. like most of merzbow's recordings, merzbear is a significant document of his ever evolving improvisational style. slowly, he's been moving away from his pure laptop era and re-incorporating elements of his pre-laptop analog days w/ his homemade junk guitar, ems synthi & electronics. this hybrid sound brings the past into the present and pounds with total junk-collage dada urgency as only masami akita can do it. cover art by jenny akita.

  • untitled (13:49)
  • untitled (14:44)
  • untitled (18:49)
  • untitled (11:18)
important press release...
minazo is merzbow's tribute to the beloved male elephant seal who lived life in captivity at a tokyo aquarium. masami akita often visited the seal at the aquarium and was allowed to access minazo behind the scenes. minazo includes many phototographsand an essay by masami akita as well as illustrations by jenny akita.

“minazo, an elephant seal, died at 5:15 pm on october 4, 2005. he was 11 years old, still young for an elephant seal whose life expectancy is 20 years on average. whatever the cause of death, i feel sad and angry each time i hear about animals dying in captivity far away from their natural habitat.

minazo was raised at the enoshima aquarium in kanagawa prefecture. with a strong build, 5 meters in height and 2 tons in weight, he was the only male elephant seal in japan. director yukiko hori said in her book "the story of an aquarium" (published by iwanami shoten) that minazo was brought to japan from uruguay in 1995.

his name, which consists of three kanji characters meaning "beautiful", "male", and "elephant", was chosen from 1,500 public suggestions. the aquarium had raised male and female elephant seals called daikichi and omiya, who had been brought from the antarctic island of south georgia in 1964. after they died in 1977 and 1979, specimens were made using their skins, which are currently displayed at the aqarium. hori said that the previous experience with the two seals was of help in raising minazo.

minazo became popular through tv appearances. he was once introduced on a variety show as a look-alike for wrestler bob sapp, an insult to minazo. elephant seals have far greater strength than humans, and can even crush a car when they get really mad. bob would have been beaten in a second. minazo was forced to perform various stunts before audience at each mealtime, such as holding a bucket with one flipper, bending back like a prawn, and standing still while a keeper jumped and clung on him. the hard work made him exhausted and might have caused his early death.

many of the aquariums in japan have become mere amusement establishments. if their mission includes breeding and protecting endangered animals, they must continue feeding the animals in captivity responsibly. i, however, believe that they should eventually end the exhibition of animals in the name of academic research, and instead start functioning as animal shelters only.”

merzbow's back (you knew he would be) with another release in the popular merz series on important records. this time masami akita has returned with merzbuta (buta means pig in japanese) and he's looking back to the last 3 discs in the merzbox as his primary influence for these recordings. this means that for the first time in a long time he has recorded his ems synthi model “a”. don't expect to hear anything from this record in a volkswagen advertisment but merzbuta is merzbow's most approachable release yet.

merzbuta is third in the series of merz-titled releases following in the audio footsteps of the flagship release merzbeat. with the same reverence for crushing analog beats, weaving noise textures and a compositional complexity masami akita has returned to the feast with merzbuta.

merzbowlive destruction at no fun 2007” compact disc

december 2007 release; the transcription of masami akita’s set at the 2007 no fun fest; which he in turn took back to his “bedroom” and remixed shortly thereafter... hailed by many as a “return to form” after years of strictly computer-based recording & performance regimes, this packs a powerful wallop utilizing an “amplified sheet metal instrument” alongside laptops & assorted electronics...

quite surprising in the amount of jump-cuts/change-ups (compared to his other recent work, much of which consists of loops) ; coming across almost through-composed in spots ... very nice.

24 merzbow 'live destruction at no fun 2007' cd

at this year's no fun fest, the legendary japanese noise king merzbow (masami akita) gave a blistering performance that stunningly brought together both his classic analog and recently-explored digital concerns. keeping pace between two laptops and an amplified sheet-metal instrument, the walls of computerized droning distortion and psyched-out metallic scarping easily reminded those attending to the world of noise that even icons with twenty-plus year careers under their belts can still vivaciously channel the advancements they helped build as well as compose stunning untried sounds. merzbow's set no doubt left longtime followers thoroughly fulfilled while those who've only heard the name thrown around in mythical regard were bound to have been left with a hearty appreciation of his genius.

merzbow / carlos giffoni / jim o’rourkeelectric dress” compact disc

  • electric dress (52:16)
late april 2007 release; a recording of a concert that took place at tokyo’s uplink factory on september 30th, 2006 featuring the debut trio of masami “merzbow” akita (ems synthi ‘a’, handmade instruments and various effects), carlos giffoni (custom synthss and analog filters), and jim o’rourke (synth and microphone.)

electric dress” is a single 50+ minute synth-blast that delivers on a bunch of levels; it has a nice, narrative flow; lingering in “space machine” territory for the first half before amping up into full-on annihilation for the second... the recording is actually quite clean; not the “in-the-red” lineage tape-saturated blowout you’d expect, much closer to the sound of the zero gravity records from the mid 90s (incidentally, also mostly recorded @ uplink - i’ve got to check that place out!)
no fun productions press release...

15 merzbow/carlos giffoni/jim o’rourke 'electric dress' cd

electric dress covers the full spectrum of sound color possibility, from totally brutal walls of destructive noise to beautiful minimal synthetic interplay, analog drone and shifting alien electronics. a total mind melting collaboration recorded live in tokyo using synths and a variety of custom analog equipment, even including merzbow's classic spring/junk metal instrument. warm, varied, and obsessive this is what industrial music should have been, the sound of infinite machines demolishing a planet and creating a new structure where live organisms have been eradicated.

edited and mastered by jim for maximum sonic annihilation. documents one of nowadays very rare merzbow's all analog live shows, one of jim o'rourke's rare live appearances since his move to japan and the culmination of carlos giffoni's japan synth destruction tour. all this at the same time! 100% essential!

electric dress is recommended for fans of analog period merzbow, early noise and industrial music, academic electronic and analog synth music-and for those adepts of beautiful and invigorating evil music.

merzbowlive at henie onstad centre” compact disc

  • live at henie onstad centre (41:38)
october 2010 release ; ... truly something of inspired move, flying in masami akitato play the opening party of the ”kurt schwitters in norway” exhibition at the henie onstad this time last year (why squirm through a lecture about kurt’s time spent in exile in lysaker from ‘37 - ‘40 when you could instead get sand-blasted by a 40-minute wall of charred synth, junk metal, and computer fire-bombing ? seems like a no-brainer to me) ... an excellent contemporary merzbow outing ; incorporates a little bit of every era ...
prisma press release...

merzbow: live at henie onstad art centre cd

masami akita’s merzbow project is the biggest name in noise music. few other artist enjoys the kind of respect within their fields as merzbow does within the noise scene. if talking about noise music there is simply no way getting around merzbow. since 1979 akita has worked relentlessly producing hundreds of records. he also has a long list of collaboraters: richard pinhas, sunn 0))), autechre, pan sonic, jim o’rourke, boris, gore beyond necropsy, smegma and many others.

merzbow performed at the henie onstad art centre on october 11th 2009. this performance was for the exhibition ”kurt schwitters in norway”. since akita has sited kurt schwitters as one of his main influences for his music, and took his name from schwittersmerzbau sculpture, it was a natural choice to have merzbow perform at the centre on the opening weekend of the exhibition. the complete 40 minute performance is presented on the ”live at henie onstad art centre” cd.

musically this is classic merzbow; hypnotic loops, layers of white noise and massive sweeps of sonic overload. akita performed using two computers, synthesizer, custom-made metal objects and a host of effect pedals.

the cd is mixed and mastered by lasse marhaug and the inner sleeve features a unique photo of masami akita inside schwitters merzbau. merzbow in merzbau.

limited edition of 500 copies.

origami replika
kommerz - merzbow in the hands of origami replika
cd

this cd sees origami replika (a now defunct part of the ever changing origami cultural collective/phenomenon) made up by three of norway's most diehard noiseheads -- lasse marhaug, tore h. bøe, and mads staff jensen. recorded in 1997, this effort is entirely based on sound sources from the back catalogue of merzbow. with no back-bending, knee-scraping humility, and with a pure love for all source sounds, origami replika have shaped classic merzbow sound into all-new compositions. these are innovative and highly potent re-workings of the harsh soundwaves, recommended to all those who still have a healthy addiction to the merzbow sounds of yesterday. thick and meaty, the blasts emanating from the speakers is filled with lusty, fetishized, organic heavy noise and experimental dadaism, ready to be devoured by the faithful disciples.

originally planned for release on another label, and now finally unleashed on segerhuva, this is a cd that has been tried and tested over and over again. these recordings, created almost a decade ago, have been remastered by lasse marhaug, and it is safe to say that this cd has stood the test of time. after nine years, it sounds remarkable -- a solid chunk of the classic, living breathing noise object that some call religion.

bottom line -- the noise fetish is still very much alive and well. this time it comes from a somewhat unexpected source. indulge!

rondo / 7phases / blowback
merzbow + kim cascone
sr213

in the 80's, masami akita, asmus tietchens and kim cascone collaborated on a cd called 'grav' which was eventually released on silent records in the early 90's. having gone their separate ways, masami and kim reestablished contact in the late 90's. after email address were exchanged, kim received a copy of the 'amlux' cd from masami, and later heard about a remix project on important records paying tribute to the japanese industrial/ noise-maker.

cascone started his own remix based on extracts from 'amlux' cd. the new track was based on new editing techniques cascone developed which were experiments in time compression by combining tape editing techniques commonly used in musique concrete with simple algorithms developed in max/msp.

the track 'blowback' - the prototype track using this editing style - was completely constructed by hand using a software sound editor. '7phase' puts these editing techniques under algorithmic control in max/msp. by using each others published work as raw material for their collaboration. they then sent each other tracks via cdr to be used as either new source material or finished work. after choosing the best of the collection of tracks they had developed, kim and masami titled the pieces, sequenced the tracks and then designed a cover graphic for it using jitter (graphic library for max/msp).

ju-jikan: 10 hours of sound from japan
23f/sfm 901, double compact disc set

in 2001, the san francisco sound-arts organization 23five and the san francisco museum of modern art co- presented ju-jikan — a ten hour ‘listening event’ documenting the past 50 years of japanese experimental music. the curators of ju-jikan; atau tanaka, ryoji ikeda, and shunichiro okada did not intend their exhibition to be a comprehensive encyclopedia of japanese experimentation; rather they sought “to trace the complex web of sonic style that constitutes the current japenese musical landscape.” tanaka, whose lucid writings are found within ju-jikan’s liner notes, takes great care in describing the contradictions and unspoken connections that linger not just within the niches of japanese audio experimentation but also throughout all of japanese culture. just as technology and electronics are the lone assimilating factors within the broad scope of ju-jikan, these same tools also gave the possibility for separation from the west and from each other to create a wealth of new languages.

while the ten hour ‘listening event’ at sfmoma spanned 5 decades of historical recordings, the double cd centers upon the last decade, as a means to publish previously unreleased work from many of featured artists. all of the artists with ju-jikan (both the 2cd and the sfmoma listening event) draw from the recombinant power of electronic synthesis and the juxtaposition of disparate styles; which together have become a standard if elusively-defined musical vocabulary for japanese music. tanaka, ikeda, and okada offered convenient catagories (computer music, anti-academic movements, noise, anti-pop permutations, ambient fields, after improvised music, etc.) as ports of entry; however, they point out that many japanese experimental artists refuse to paint themselves into an aesthetic corner. ju-jikan’s cd companion features compositions from tamami toro, pain jerk, yasunao tone, nerve net noise, otomo yoshihide, atau tanaka, i.d., masonna, kozo inada, ichiro nodaira, hanatarash, yuji takahashi, ryoji ikeda, merzbow, kazuo uehara, astro, and testuo furudate.

founded in 1993, 23five incorporated is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the development and increased awareness of sound works in the public arena, and to the support and education of artists working with and discussing the medium of sound. for the past 14 years, 23five incorporated has remained at the forefront in bringing the most adventurous elements of sound art to the san francisco bay area. 23five has served as an important benefactor to artists such as john duncan, christina kubisch, francisco lopez, achim wollscheid, matt heckert, zbigniew karkowski, atau tanaka, and many more.

originally released in 2001 as the companion to atp 1.0, all tomorrow's parties 1.1 was curated by sonic youth, and was initially created to accompany the all tomorrow's parties events held in los angeles and england.

this compilation definitely has the sonic youth fingerprint with acts as far ranging as noise mavens boredoms to husky crooner cat power. features exclusive unreleased tracks and new song versions by sonic youth, unwound, stephen malkmus, stereolab, bardo pond, cat power, papa m, cannibal ox, dead c, boredoms, kevin drumm and satans tornade.

this compilation captures the very spirit of the atp festival by matching disparate musical elements that together create a cross-section of the very best under-represented music.

may 2003 double dream date with a good chunk of the more ‘relevant’ akts in contempo-tronica taking on one of mr. akita’s better ‘digital age’ efforts. frighteningly high signal-to-noise-to-signal ratio when pitted against other recent all-star remix efforts. very odd lineup given the source material (bola?) but a substantial work transcending mere remix-compilation status...
important press release...
artists were asked to use merzbow's album amlux (imprec-02) as an instrument in an original composition, rather than to perform the conventional remix. we hoped that this would allow the artist to flourish with greater creative freedom and a less restrictive context. we didn't want to fit this project into any sub-genre of music. we wanted it to simply exist. perhaps the beat oriented tracks, record scratching and vocals will annoy some noise purists, and perhaps the noisy sound collages will irritate others, but hopefully this collection of tracks from some of the best electronic artists working today will enlighten the listener. music is sound and sound is everywhere, regardless of classification.

korm plastics press release...
various artists - 'epitaph for john'
kp 3016 full length cd

over the course of his life john watermann worked with almost every conceivable artistic medium. in many ways, he was the epitome of the "total artist"; almost every element of his life being in some way his own artistic project.

as a young man in his native germany he worked as a photographer and documentary filmmaker, also etching, painting and writing. his experience as a youth in germany in the second world war influencing his work from then right through until his death.

following his move to australia watermann worked as jeweller, opening a number of shops in sydney with his longtime australian partner barbara heath (an accomplished jeweller in her own right) and meanwhile continued to write, paint and even sculpt. eventually, after traveling the east coast of australia in a self-built sailing boat, watermann settled in brisbane and began to produce his music.

he first released his music in 1989 in the form of the album "warmth is the fifth room". like most of his releases, the cassette appeared in a run of very few copies on his own label "nightshift", and was consequently almost impossible to find.

over the next 10 years he released numerous albums and contributed to a number of compilations, both under his own name as a solo artist, in collaboration with others (such as merzbow) and under a number of pseudonyms (including radio mull, spinal machine and total disease). also, apart from his music, in the 1990s he created an interactive cd-rom work "rose is a rose" and published the webzine "lean yellow supporting".

sadly, on april 2nd 2002 john watermann died suddenly of an infection resulting from his ongoing treatment for cancer. having in the final year of his life returned to painting and writing (alongside a burgeoning interest in cooking), he still had vast plans for future projects.

among these unfulfilled projects were plans to collaborate with frans de waard on a new release. although only preliminary discussions on the collaboration took place and watermann never completed any work towards the project, watermann's source material that was to be the basis of the work now serves as a basis for this tribute release.

despite his vast artistic output, watermann has been known almost exclusively for his music and even then his work remains largely undiscovered, perhaps for no other reason than its sheer unavailability. in many ways watermann could be considered a classic example of the artists' artist, his work influencing many far more prominent sonic alchemists. and perhaps then this release serves as a record of watermann and his influence, documenting the respect he reserved from his peers and, hopefully, introducing his work to a new audience.

- ben byrne

this cd contains the original soundwork sent to frans de waard by john watermann, reworkings thereof by asmus tietchens, ralf wehowsky, merzbow and freiband.

petri supply press release...

a reissue of the midas music tapes compilation of dutch and international noise "enkele gemotiveerde produktiemedewerkers" on c100 tape make available again some rare tracks in a new deluxe edition.

by 1990, the underground cassette network in the netherlands was well established. in cities such as asten, nijmegen, 's-hertogenbosch, utrecht, tilburg, amsterdam, wormeveer, and zoetermeer the noise tape had already been an essential listening experience since the early 80's.

midas tapes had compiled a great series of tapes called harsh ears now, followed by the zondig lp, and then the long, 100 minute enkele gemotiveerde produktiemedewerkers compilation.  packed with high energy tracks, e.g.p. features screeching live sessions of post destruction music and dva met dva nichts, alongside solo work by winter (aka peter duimelinks of v2 org.), guido doesborg (dwarf farm), ios smolders, roel meelkop (mailcop) and thu20 a collective featuring many of these same people. kapotte muziek and mission papua holland contribute tracks as well.

the international network has been the lifeblood for dutch labels to exist and profit through partnership distributions throughout europe, japan, and north america. at that time artists on different continents already had achieved a comfortable connectedness through postal exchanges. every act on e.g.p. participated in the global art network, and earned the humorous e.g.p acronym, which translates to independently-motivated-production workers (a desirable work trait!). achim wollscheid and lieutenant caramel have supplied interesting sound collages from germany and france.  merzbow and (kk) null perform some high quality japanoise. from north america, smersh, emil beaulieau, gregory whitehead, hands to, arcane device, and yeast culture also serve up an assortment of american style sound processing.

as a payback and thank you to those involved in this tape, incubator has republished this tape in an american edition in 2009.  included are brief track notes in a fold open screen printed 5 x 8" cassette sleeve. limited to 240.

as an introduction to this album here are some extracts from david toop's liner notes.

"most music in japan has little to recommend it; it is a sonic equivalent of those brutal concrete towers or the transitory chaos of multi-storey teen-fashion emporia in aoyama.

but a sonic underground thrives, creatively if not financially, and perhaps it should be compared with the shabby golden-gai drinking dens of shinjuku, faint reminders of a lost time when desire and transgression shared endless cups of sake with political and artistic radicalism...

...how is it possible to live within and react against an extremely regulated society, politically moribund, engulfed by consumerism, technological innovation, mediated images, a confusion of influences and traditions? agitation and stillness may seem to be opposing strategies, yet they converge at a certain point...

...surging deep beneath the noir turbulence of merzbow and so takahashi, the car crash ruins of otomo yoshihide and ground zero, the curated urban fragments of viewmaster, the technocratic complexity of bisk and yoshihiro hanno's multiphonic ensemble, the piercing intensity of sachiko m, the childlike placidity of aki onda, yoshio machida and haco, is a conflicting sense of clarity attained through struggle. out of turmoil, a stained purity is revealed.

listening to this alchemical transmutation, i think of fujieda baian, the central character of shotaro ikenami's historical novels. professional assassin and acupuncturist, baian kills to live, lives to heal. at the beginning of yasunari kawabata's novel, the sound of the mountain, ogata shingo hears an elusive sound, the faint rumble of the mountain at the rear of his house. "it was as if a demon had passed, making the mountain sound out." shingo shakes his head, thinking the disturbance might be a ringing in his ears. feeling fear, perhaps he hears the collapsing certainties of the future, our present, where everything is in flux.

collection of answer-pieces on the oeuvre of dave philips’ late 80s hardcore band “fear of god.” damn - look at that lineup... reads like my own personal mix-tape from the noisier end of the contemporary sound-terrorism/experimental music spectrum. few disappoint with their decisively short remix-blasts... just about as good as remix-compilation discs get...

october 2009 release ; neat fold-out double-disc edition covering a series of pieces curated by martijn hohmann for a “listening room at art gallery lokaal01” in breda, nl ...

the set ships flat (actually smaller than your average dorado gatefold) but opens up like so ::

some great work here, including all-exclusive pieces from machinefabriek (crackly, cheap-reverb plugin rework of aaron martin’s cello), janek schaefer (neat, plunderphonic flamenco piece), runzelstirn & gurgelstøck (classic, aktion-heavy rudolf), merzbow (washing-machine rhythms into a synth blow-out) ...

... then (ad)vance(d) (formant-filter drones & assorted static), justin bennett’s students (ground-hum rich field recording overlay), steve roden (automatic-feeling mystery clank & reed drones - get lost in the long sound-sample), francisco lópez (rainforest hiss), and staplerfahrer (grainy, noisy grisple) ...

most pieces hover around the 10-minute mark, as such there’s enough room for them to say what they need to without feeling hurried ... as site-specific compilations go this one’s a keeper ; highly recommended !!!
