if you think that the blue chopsticks horse is a fusty, knowledge-heavy nag who answers exclusively to the name "reissue label," behold van oehlen. van oehlen is the duo of albert and markus oehlen. albert is best known to listeners for his heavy, integral participation in the red krayola. he currently runs the leiterwagen record label -- rare thing, batting nearly a thousand? -- providing a home for the likes of jailhouse, j.b. slik, and titankatzen as well as the rearcar / rearprojection new stream compilations. albert is among the most heralded visual artists of his generation and has had retrospectives of his work at the wexner center for the arts, hamburg's deichtorhallen, and the kunsthalle basel. markus oehlen is known to listeners as as the drummer of the legendary german punk group mittagspause, as one- third of jailhouse, and as the leiterwagen solo artist don hobby. he is familiar to sharp-eyed souls as an exceptional visual artist, a veteran of numerous gallery and museum shows. (two of markus's drawings grace gastr del sol's camoufleur; the cover of we are eggsperienced is his.) we are eggsperienced features contributions from the red krayola's mayo thompson and tom watson as well as german jazz legend rüdiger carl (cowws quintet and various recordings for the fmp label) and goldenen zitronen frontman schorsch kamerun. what is new stream music? a draft of albert's new stream manifesto was circulated before the red krayola's first live performance of fingerpainting. new stream is not dissimilar to cold jazz, but counts among its progenitors the red krayola's free-form freakouts, "revolution no. 9," sun ra's most bracingly alien synthesizer solos, and the deep freeze mice at their least musical. mayo thompson's until now ultra-rare solo album. the album was produced in houston, texas in 1970 by thompson, frank davis and roger 'rocket' romano for the short-lived but nonetheless legendary texas revolution label of walt andrus. though pressed and advertised in the pages of rolling stone, the demise of the label meant the album went largely undistributed until the mid 1980s when glass records (london) gave it its first proper release.

coming as the sun set on the first psychedelic rock era, corky's debt evokes the early days of acoustic blues, but is already in the maelstrom from which punk rock would emerge just a few years later. the set features innovative performances by some of houston's finest musicians of the time playing eleven songs by thompson -- one with frederick barthelme, with whom he started the red crayola. they represent a broad range of expressive manners and forms.

made to stand with the finest comparable work of the period, corky's debt shows thompson at his most accessible. unique ballads, blues, rock and love songs flow one to another with style, grace and intensity, and the handling of diverse popular-music idioms and language that characterize his more widely known work in the red crayola are also to be found.

with the entirely new music statement, sighs trapped by liars, the red krayola renew their association with conceptual artists art & language. beginning in 1973, their collaboration includes the video projects “nine gross and conspicuous errors,” and “struggle in new york,” as well as the much-acclaimed and -decried music releases corrected slogans, kangaroo?, and black snakes. thirty years has mellowed the various parties not at all. the faint-hearted might want to swallow something calming before giving sighs trapped by liars a spin.

sighs trapped by liars is as much a delightful bit of latter-day entertainment as it is a sensational musical excursion not trapped in any era. the composers of red krayola classics such as “keep all your friends,” “portrait of v.i.lenin in the style of jackson pollock,” ”black snakes,” and “born in flames” have made another try at negotiating the relationship between language and music in this new collection. speaking in a contemporary (and frequently foul-mouthed) voice they say something we could all stand to hear — in a popular music format that we can all enjoy.

those expecting a further trip into the radical leftist pamphleteering of the former works will have to listen closely; these are new songs for new days. perspectives are taken from quotes, exhibits and jokes of history and translated into material that addresses the state of the art. this music couldn’t be made without the experiences and politics of former days. the questions the 60s asked about the very idea of music and objects inform the practice today; the relationship of these new songs to the old ones is projective and analytical, subject to change without notice.

art & language’s lyrical contributions were put to music and played by mayo thompson, accompanied by tom watson, john mcentire, noel kupersmith and jim o’rourke. the music is an intimate and expansive setting, a pop framework for deliberate and meditative language. red krayola vocalists elisa randazzo and sandy yang stepped forth to the mic for a lead vocal performance that runs the register from ethereal-to-nursery-rhyme-to-adult-contemporary, with the odd obscenity smoothly integrated into its logic. jumping through the mirror so that you have to follow, the red krayola with art & language bring you sighs trapped by liars.

the yonemoto brothers 1997 film, japan in paris in l.a. tells the story of the painter, saeki yuzo -- an authentic bohemian hero lionized in his homeland as the 'japanese van gogh.' the film captures the drama of his plight through a multiplicity of avant-garde visual strategies. they reflect in their form the tragic psychology of the tortured artist.

fingerpainting features unreleased songs from the distant days of 1966. the 90s red krayola shuffles these ancient pre-arable red crayola songs with the sounds of neo-freakouts, live on the world's stage -- free, familiar, ugly, for a whole bunch of new generations.

fingerpainting features both the latter day krayola and the original red crayola, from thirty years back, bringing it all full circle. and thus allowing another circle to be formed as soon as possible.

recorded live in venice beach, california and at the berkeley folk festival, berkeley, california in june and july 1967.

a strange archival release of '60s maverick psychedelic band the red crayola. this double cd represents a vital missing link in the group's three-decade history. on its first album, the parable of arable land, red crayola linked rock songs with bursts of frenzied group improvisations called "free form freak outs." their live sets were said to have consisted solely of noise, and this set provides the proof.

on both the concert tracks, the band indulges in earsplitting feedback for its own sake, even more abrasive and austere than anything the velvet underground, the mothers of invention, or the grateful dead did in concert at the time. the radio broadcast included here of their berkeley folk festival appearance finds a bewildered broadcaster assuming that the band is tuning up and will be starting their set momentarily. the audience response is predictably chaotic.

the tracks recorded in hotel rooms and with john fahey are considerably more sedate, similar to the instrumentals on the lost coconut hotel album (also issued by drag city). any lover of experimental music should appreciate live 1967, and hardy red crayola devotees will not be disappointed.

despite penning a couple of classics of psychedelia on their first lp ('hurricane fighter plane' and 'transparent radiation'), the band showed up at the berkeley folk music festival in the summer of 1967 with a markedly different approach to ensemble playing. taking off from the concept of a 'free-form freak out', the red crayola leaned towards avant-garde approaches. playing feedback-pieces, sound-as-music, time- and no-time pieces, compressions and motions, one-second pieces, music within music, unhearable music and so on.

at the berkeley folk music festival they met john fahey, master of the indexes and finger picked guitar. he sat in on their set there. also included in this mind-melting collection of feedback drones, improvisation and unhearable music are recordings made in their venice hotel room after their concert there. these pieces represent the 'unplugged' crayola approach to their unconventional dictum, as well as their serious attitude towards this often lighthearted, intellectual-physical genre.

the red crayola’s soldier-talk returns at last. drag city records are proud to announce that, after having been missing in action for twenty-eight years, this vital, much acclaimed work is now available again.

soldier-talk appeared first on radar records. a custom label built around elvis costello, financed and distributed by wea, radar had licensed the international artists catalogue in 1978 and had already re-released the band’s first album, the parable of arable land, and first single, “wives in orbit” b/w “yik-yak”.

soldier-talk was the red crayola’s first new commercial release since 1968. recorded after their second tour of europe where they shared the highways with columns of nato forces on the move in a rapidly heating cold war, it reflects the world as it sat, awash in punk rock and its cognates, dreading mass destruction.

long unavailable second album by the red (c)krayola - at this stage a trio with mayo thompson, frederick barthelme (whom i only found out recently is the brother of donald barthelme, and a fantastic author in his own right...), and steve cunningham - recorded in 1967 and unreleased until drag city stepped in in 1995 ... arguably the most “out” set in the krayola kanon ; short, entirely improv-based pieces ...

in 1966 the band signed to international artists, home label to fellow psych-rockers the 13th floor elevators that was run by lelan rogers (brother of country musician kenny rogers). in 1967 the label released the psychedelic album, parable of arable land, featuring six songs by the original three members interwoven with a cacophony generated by approximately 100 anonymous followers known as the familiar ugly who appear on a number of noise tracks called free-form freak-outs. the album's title track was a tape loop of electronic sounds with musical improvisations layered on top of it, a sound that foreshadowed the red crayola's second recording.

the minimalist music album coconut hotel was recorded in 1967 but rejected by international artists for its lack of commercial potential because of its complete departure from the full-sounding guitar/bass/drums/vocals rock sound of the red crayola's first album. coconut hotel featured such self-described tracks as "organ buildup", "free guitar" and a series of atonal "one-second pieces" for piano, trumpet and percussion.

the album did not see release until 1995. during this period, the band performed a concert in berkeley, california where they attached a contact microphone to a sheet of aluminium foil that was set under a block of melting ice. the red crayola also performed with guitarist john fahey and recorded an entire studio album of music in collaboration with him, but label head lelan rogers demanded possession of the tapes and recorded documentation of those sessions has been missing ever since.
