... sticking by their computers for the masses, not the classes slogan, jack tramiels commodore moved updwards of 20 million units of its then flagship model, whose whopping 64k of memory & vast library of software (a rumored 10,000 titles) were its main selling points ... but deep inside its beige, rounded exterior lay the real heart of the machine :: bob yannes (later the founder of ensoniq) mos technology 6581 sid (sound interface device) chip ...
... boasting three dcos (each with four selectable waveforms), an analogue multimode filter, three adsrs & three ring modulators, external audio input & assorted idiosyncratic properties (for example, a manufacturing defect allowed software designers to directly modulate the bias of the output stage, resulting in the ability to play back raw 4-bit pcm data as audio - or samples) the sound engine of the c64 was light years beyond anything that came before it, and composers such as martin galway, jeroen tel, chris huelsbeck, and dozens more, for a good half-decade, thrived by composing & programming increasingly complex music scores & sound-effects that made full use of the chips unique feature-set ...
... this comp offers but a sampling of the amazing work done during this brief creative flash (which, in terms of combined musical & engineering ingenuity, is on par with that of dance musics brief flourish into barely-controlled insanity / hyper-programmed excesses in the mid-late-90s) ; its a magical confluence of brilliant early digital synthesizer design & quite a forward-thinking set of compositional sensibilities ... highly recommended !!! |

revolutionary composers such as martin galway, rob hubbard, david whittaker and ben daglish rose to prominence during the 80s for their technology defying masterpieces whose sounds ranging from simple clicks and beeps to complex musical extravaganzas. included on this compilation is some of their most celebrated work including music from games arkanoid, comic bakery, last ninja and sanxion. |
