| 2005 release ; finally available to mms customers far & wide ...
here’s the first of a 3-disc series covering the work of electro-acoustic composer matsuo o(h)no, perhaps best known for his incredibly prescient sound-design work on the “atom” (better known as “astro boy”) cartoons made between 1963 & 1966 ... this disc collects every cue & theme from said show (many actually executed by “assistant” takehisa kosugi) in addition to a few musique concrète pieces from the early 80s & a few pieces made in the 90s ...
i’ve heard first-hand from a many different people just how much said materials warped young minds into the path of abstract electronic music ; i can’t even imagine what this stuff sounded like back in the early 60s as it still, 45 years on, sounds like the future ... highly recommended !!! |
| | matsuo ohno (born in tokyo, 1930)
having been interested in surrealism from childhood, matsuo ohno also got familiar with nietzschean and kitaro nishida's philosophy. after experiencing the work of sound effects and art in theaters and broadcasting station (nhk), he established as a freelance sound artist in 1953 at the age of 23. before the era of synthesizer, he used mainly transmitters and tape recorders, echo and various tape editing technology freely. this was his starting point of the quest for the 'unexperienced sound', one of his most important and ever seeking themes since he was moved by hearing records of karlheinz stockhausen's electronic music. in the process of his sound making, eventuality and 'chance operation' is given priority over design, and operation itself over theory.
in these early years of his career, key influences on him were humio kamei (1908-1987) and michio kato (1918-1953). kamei was a film director ohno studied under, and kato was a dramatist who had a great esteem for jean giraudoux. ohno said always these two persons had great impact on his musical background though he was rarely influenced by musicians through his life.
in 1963, ohno took charge of sound design of japanese tv animation series 'astro boy', created various electronic sounds working all through the everytime. (back then, takehisa kosugi, the musical director of merce cunningham dance company (mcdc), worked as an assistant of him.) then he released his representative solo album 'i saw the outer limits' in 1978.
from 1971 to 2004, he got involved in helping play performance of intellectually disabled people, making several documentary films. in addition, for the film titled 'scenery of wind' (1976 / 1988) on tatsumi hijikata (1928-1986), the founder of the butoh dance, he made electronic soundtrack. (the famous butoh dancer kazuo ohno is not related matsuo ohno.)
after 1980s, he started to direct sound design for pavilions in large-scale exhibitions. also, studying and performance of multi dimensional sound became his next subject. in addition, for other installations, videos, performances, he has made numerous soundtracks.
from 2001 to 2003, he stayed in the hospital for medical care. after that, his enthusiasm for creation was recovered to lead him to make a new album 'memory in the beginning' at the age of 74, in 2004. until now, he has been kept busy in sound creation. this cd set is the first ohno's works released other than 'astro boy'. now matsuo ohno's music full of great imagination and uniqueness is waiting for the chance of global reevaluation.

the original “astro boy” album was released twice as lp, first in 1975 and again in 1978, and as a cd in 1998. unfortunately, both cd and lp were discontinued and the music is not available now except as expensive collector's items. in this release, you will be able to hear about 20 minutes of the sound effects taken from the original 'astro boy' album (as track #1 to #32). please experience ohno's epoch-making work, the world of electro-acoustic sounds created before the synthesizer era.
ohno's work style was so unique. he used marimba sound recorded on an open reel tape to generate astro boy's footsteps. he rubbed the tape against heads of open reel deck, moved it back and forth manually, then put some echoes and other effects onto the sound came out by doing 'open reel scratch'. creating just a few second of the sound required an immense amount of time and effort.
on the other 4 tracks compiled in this album, synthesizer was used for sound material as well as field recordings. 'yamatoji a' was recorded as music for videodisc release in 1882. the disc contains pictures of the ancient japanese city of nara taken by photographer, taikichi irie. to create the track, ohno used traditional japanese sounds such as bonsho - the bell of a buddhist temple, and dokyo - sutra recitation. these sound materials are field recorded by ohno himself. 'ymatoji a' is a very sophisticated piece of musique concrete.
'sea dream' was the track produced for a 3d movie in mid 1980's. 'yuragi - fluctuations #5' is a fairly recent work of ohno, made for art festival held in kyoto (1999) and utilized the same sound materials as 'yamatoji a'. the track was recorded on just two channels. however, ohno enhanced the sound by putting surround-sound effect, which he inimitably developed. 'yuragi - fluctuations #2' was created for a butoh dance and dyeing art collaboration exhibit at an art gallery in kyoto in 1991.
'yuragi' is a japanese word for 'fluctuation'. according to ohno, he used 'yuragi' as a term referring to the energy change imposed at the time the universe was first born.

“the world of electro-acoustic sound and music” would seem to be a perfect title for a record of grass powered oscillators, goat pulled filters, with trees wielding splicing blocks, madly splicing as the wind blows roughly through its branches.
the sounds of matsuo ohno is just as surreal. listening with only your ears, the sounds of intergalactic travel and battle becomes an abstract painting of the past and of the future.
a masterpiece of reverb-tank-soaked splice and dice and cosmic flight.
