... over the last few decades, its been easy to think of merzbow as masamis solo wall of noise project, but that would be completely disregarding the units humble beginnings as an fmp / incus-style free-improv unit, dealing in amm / mev-leaning comminglings of extended technique improvation, electronic augmentations and found sound (i.e. radios, tapes) ...
heres the first half of a session recorded on june 16th, 1981, featuring masami on tapes, prepared guitar, ring modulator, noise etc & kiyoshi on piano, violin, harmonica, guitar etc ; three takes with mizutanis piano & akitas telemetry-noises dominating the first, a raucous & dareisay bluesy gut-bucket guitar & harmonica blaster, as the second, and a superb dragging wail of scraped strings & heavy ring-modulator overtones as the third ...
needless to say, this is all incredible, eye-opening stuff, issued here for the first time since the original, private cassette versions on masamis lowest music & arts back in 1982 ... acquire all four of these, post-haste ... |
