| first time on cd for marty’s 1980 debut solo album (originally released on lust/unlust for those who know why that’s a big deal), shamefully paired with a not terrible but... why? set of tracks recorded in 1991. not that its relevant to this recording in particular, but i honestly can’t think of a time where i was happier than when i was sitting at the edge of backstage at the cooler on june 2nd, 2001 whilst michael karoli was just ripping shreds over alan & marty’s extremely amped incoherent nonsense. i had always liked suicide, but after that point i LIKED suicide, kind of made it a... (what’s a solo, positive synonym of vendetta?) quest to seek out just about everything those two had recorded. which led me smack down to this record, found for a very reasonable price at an alexandria, va collector’s shop.
when played blindly to those aware of modern electronic music trends one could easily mistake the first track ‘mari’ for something done by a more whimsical-minded practioner... global goon or someone such perhaps. but it’s not new, nor was it made even 10 years prior to the whole idm junk setting sail. which is kind of an incredible thing really. not as much on the rest of the original record (which covers the first six tracks here), but still a good chunk of it is remarkably good. not to mention really, really great. especially if you’re into suicide, in which case its essential. |
