earth
ind 098 lp

release date 6 march 2012

de stijl is proud to announce the march 6 release of earth, black to comm’s music for the film of the same name. earth is a 2009 silent film by ho tzu nyen, one of singapore’s foremost artists. the visually arresting film has been live-soundtracked by a number of artists (including oren ambarchi) in several locales, and after black to comm, a.k.a. marc richter’s accompaniment at berlin’s asian film festival and the unsound festival in krakow (both in 2010), he decided to commit it to record. in marc’s own words:

most of the music was composed under the influence of heavy pain killers while recovering from a broken leg. the music (like the film) is about slowness and decay, states of unconsciousness, sleeping and waking up, dying and being reborn. the film basically is a post-apocalyptic collage based on paintings by classical european painters (caravaggio, delacroix, rembrandt, géricault) — the music tries to translate that concept employing similar collage-based sampling techniques using loops made from vintage vinyl and shellac records combined with acoustic and electronic instrumentation and voice.

richter’s already formidable expressive power stretches over all of earth. reflecting the countless cyclical forces that make up, oh, more or less everything we know and are, the music on earth is bracing, lovely, bustling and still, and at times bittersweet, a commingling of sensations and emotions that can’t be neatly separated from one another. (earth is complex, as you know.) guests on earth include david aird, a.k.a vindicatrix (on the mordant music label), contributing startling vocal work; renate nikolaus on an array of instruments and noise devices; rutger zuydervelt (singing bowls); and christopher kline (singing saw). earth is black to comm’s seventh album and his debut for de stijl, following the acclaimed alphabet 1968 (on type) and last year’s vinyl-only collaboration with mike kelley of destroy all monsters (on the en/of label).

ghost lanes
lp

ghost lanes (the a side) was recorded during the first ever duo session that gareth and rutger had, at steim, amsterdam, june 2009. the two hadn't met before, but immediately there was a strange chemistry between them, and without much discussion, it was plug-in and play, and two albums and an ep were recorded. ghost lanes was then released as a very limited 3-inch cdr.

a year and a half later, they settled at steim again, for another fruitful session. that's when mackerel sky was recorded. a perfect match with the a-side of this vinyl and a cumulation of their shared progress.

gareth and rutger's music is all improvised. the slow paced pieces combine the rough loopings of rutger's guitar with the low-end rumblings of gareth's contrabass clarinet. a perfect soundtrack for some weird underwater world.

[029] machinefabriek "dauw" cd

machinefabriek is the alias for rutger zuydervelt currently residing in rotterdam, the netherlands. since 2004 zuydervelt has unleashed an uncountable number of self-released 3"cd's (his format of choice) in lovingly designed sleeves (all made by himself). in the past years some of these releases have been compiled into amazing albums such as "slaapzucht" on the root strata label, "weleer" on lampse, the "cello recycling" 10"/cd on type records and "bijeen" on kning disk. recent collaborations with stephen vietiello (on the 12k label), freiband, steinbrüchel and other likeminded artists have expanded the horizon veritably. machinefabriek's music has been remixed by the likes of xela, lesser, svarte greiner, alva noto, pita, kim cascone, ben frost, black to comm and others.

only few machinefabriek material has been recorded specifically for an album release but these have always been stand-outs in the vast catalogue. both "marijn" on lampse and "ranonkel" on burning world records were classic recordings, squeezing a large amount of what people love about zuydervelt's music into one album, at the same time giving him the space to expand on new ideas. likewise "dauw" is one of zuydervelt's most subtle & quiet yet refined works. mainly built around small but gorgeous melodies of piano and guitar playing and the crackling sound of dusty vinyl samples, these songs slowly build into intensive hymn-like angel choirs of sheer heavenly beauty.

zuydervelt's output often has drawn comparisons to the likes of fennesz, godspeed, arvo pärt, basinski, tim hecker, phillip jeck, mogwai and earth, which is certainly not all wrong and some of these have been influences in the early stages of his career but he has since developed a strong and individual language all of his own.

mastered by giuseppe ielasi with elegant artwork by zuydervelt himself; metallic print on grey cardboard stock.

catalog number: kc04
format: 7"

the same day i bought a second-hand boss dr. sampler i connected my guitar to it and recorded the basic material for these two 4-minute tracks. less drone, more composed. a bit like my huis ep i guess, that's (partly) why the title hints to that. it's machinefabriek's more playful side.

limited to 500 copies , packaged in a full color offset-printed glue pocket sleeve designed by rutger.

freiband / machinefabriekoahu” compact disc

  • martin luiten - oahu 1 (1:23)
  • freiband & machinefabriek - oahu 2.1 (21:52)
  • freiband & machinefabriek - oahu 2.2 (19:56)
... i have to admit that i’ve been (unfairly) avoiding mr. zuydervelt’s work in relation to the mms stock-pool ; mainly as, in the grand scheme of “the prolifics” - he’s right up there w/the merzbows & lópez’s of this world (& the next) ... but then recently i’ve had the chance to sit down & investigate his work and, lo and behold, for the larger part, it’s pretty great ; near-static walls of digital sound w/hints of fennesz-lineage chord-shapes almost post-rock progressions ...

this collab. w/frans de waard is certainly no exception, a pair of extended “remixes” of a 1-minute solo hawaiian slack-key guitar piece by martin luiten - touching on similar themes as the recent (and just as excellent) m.b. / jozef van wissem duet ... very nice stuff ...
low point press release...
freiband & machinefabriek - oahu

oahu’ is a collaborative release between dutch sound artists freiband (the latest project of frans de waard, founder of the korm plastics label and member of kapotte muziek, beequeen and goem to name but three) and machinefabriek (the prolific rutger zuydervelt).

the genesis of the project was a 90 second recording of improvised acoustic lapsteel (the oahu of the title) played by martin luiten. from this initial recording, segments of music, each lasting 30 seconds in length, were created then passed back and forth between de waard and zuydervelt over a period of four months for further processing, editing and refinement.  finally, with a collection of 20 of these segments, each artist composed their own 20 minute mix using these pieces.

though the nature of processing and reprocessing applied to the initial recording of the lapsteel makes it at times almost unrecognisable, the harmonic and melodic essence of the instrument is retained and utilised throughout.  and whilst unified by the source material at their disposal, these two tracks have a distinct feel and identity that manage to perfectly encapsulate the work of both artists.

cd packaged in a matt printed digipak case. ltd edition of 450 copies.

aaron martin / machinefabriekcello recycling / cello drowning” compact disc

type press release...
aaron martin & machinefabriek : cello recycling/cello drowning

a blistering collaboration between two experimental music behemoths. jet engine drone and symphonic ambience combine in one of our most gorgeous explorations of the genre to date...

rutger zuydervelt, a man better known to the experimental music world as machinefabriek is somewhat prolific; a fact you might have gathered from his steady flow of super-limited edition 3” cdrs which seem to slip out relentlessly month after month. american multi-instrumentalist aaron martin is possibly less productive only having one full-length album to his name so far, but he is no less intriguing and between them the duo have come up with a project which is far more than the sum of its parts.

the ‘cello recycling’ project was originally commissioned for use in an art gallery; zuydervelt took cello improvisations from aaron martin and built them into the slow-burning post-ambient monster that is ‘cello recycling’. however here we see the original piece accompanied by aaron martin’s take on rutger’s work, where he ‘drowns’ the original piece in a bath of murky water taking into submerged directions it has never before drifted. the two pieces together are perfectly complimentary showing two sides to a tarnished coin – one giving us pent up emotion, fizzing and shuffling awkwardly until it explodes majestically, the other giving us peaceful reflection as seen through the eyes of a serial killer who has just completed his final gift to the world. an inventive and incredibly beautiful look at the cello as an instrument and noise making tool; this is an absolute must for fans of post-classical music, the droning beauty of stars of the lid or even the moody post rock of godspeed you! black emperor. moody, kinetic and hugely enjoyable stuff, this needs to be played loud and absorbed totally…

october 2009 release ; neat fold-out double-disc edition covering a series of pieces curated by martijn hohmann for a “listening room at art gallery lokaal01” in breda, nl ...

the set ships flat (actually smaller than your average dorado gatefold) but opens up like so ::

some great work here, including all-exclusive pieces from machinefabriek (crackly, cheap-reverb plugin rework of aaron martin’s cello), janek schaefer (neat, plunderphonic flamenco piece), runzelstirn & gurgelstřck (classic, aktion-heavy rudolf), merzbow (washing-machine rhythms into a synth blow-out) ...

... then (ad)vance(d) (formant-filter drones & assorted static), justin bennett’s students (ground-hum rich field recording overlay), steve roden (automatic-feeling mystery clank & reed drones - get lost in the long sound-sample), francisco lópez (rainforest hiss), and staplerfahrer (grainy, noisy grisple) ...

most pieces hover around the 10-minute mark, as such there’s enough room for them to say what they need to without feeling hurried ... as site-specific compilations go this one’s a keeper ; highly recommended !!!
