coelacanth
the glass sponge
23five004, compact disc

the glass sponge is a subclass within the sponge phyllum, distinguished by their silica spicules that unite into delicate geometric networks. these needlelike structures form the skeleton of this most simple animal, which when dried acquires an exquisite white hue. during the victorian era, these dessicated remains were prize possessions in the finest of wunderkammers; and from what we’ve been told, a pair of glass sponges mounted under a dome could fetch up to “5 guineas.” furthermore, glass sponges have the unique ability to respond to their harsh, deep sea environment through rudimentary electrical impulses that ripple through their bodies which are devoid of nerves and muscle.

these are merely the beginnings of the fascination with the glass sponge for coelacanth, a sound art project whose name is of an ancient fish once thought to be extinct, but in truth has been flourishing in oceanic trenches. authored by the coelacanth duo of loren chasse and jim haynes, the glass sponge takes an abstracted yet empathetic view of its allegorical subject. throughout the glass sponge, coelacanth sets textural flutters, squeaks, and scrabblings in motion. these brittle events punctuate the boundless excursions of minimalism brought to life through elegaic bell tones, ghostly feedback, and tuning fork resonance, all spiralling together into translucent drones. despite the obvious submariner references for this album, it may be a surprise that very little water spilled into the recording of the glass sponge.

loren chasse is also heavily involved in the much acclaimed jewelled antler music, where the multiple personalities of thuja, the blithe sons, the franciscan hobbies, the famous boating party, child readers, and of speak in the tongues of pastorally psychedelic improvisations. jim haynes is an artist describing his craft in the former with the pithy statement, “i rust things.” he might also be known for his writings from the wire. coelacanth’s previous work the chronographis also available through the helen scarsdale agency.

founded in 1993, 23five incorporated is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the development and increased awareness of sound works in the public arena, and to the support and education of artists working with and discussing the medium of sound. for the past 14 years, 23five incorporated has remained at the forefront in bringing the most adventurous elements of sound art to the san francisco bay area. 23five has served as an important benefactor to artists such as john duncan, christina kubisch, francisco lopez, achim wollscheid, matt heckert, zbigniew karkowski, atau tanaka, and many more.

ace017: of "rocks will open" cd

loren chasse is responsible for a whole host of vital albums. he was a founding member of the jewelled antler label and has sparked so many great moments from the likes of thuja, the blithe sons, softwar, and of course his main solo guise, of. for years this project has evolved into something of absolute magical grandeur.

"rocks will open" is the latest opus in chasse's catalog. the music on this album is as organic as it gets. each tone, each sound feels like it has been culled directly from the earth's crust. gentle drones arc toward the hazy sunlight, flickering like distant birds sailing out over the sea. between the ghostly echoes rises a cacacphony of plucked strings dancing toward oblivion. loren chasse's vision is perfectly expressed on "rocks will open."

limited to 500 copies.

fv29 cd

fifth full-length release from the outdoor wandering the blithe sons, the jewelled antler-related duo of loren chasse (of, thuja) and glenn donaldson (skygreen leopards, thuja). performed mostly in coastal california environs on acoustic and battery-powered instruments, the sound of waves, wind, tide pools, seabirds and shifting sand plays an active role in these minimalist folk atmospheres. incorporating 12-string cuatro, acoustic guitar, dulcimer, banjo, harmonium, percussion, toy amplifiers, wood flutes, thai mouthorgan, violin-uke, casio and donaldson's mysterious vocal utterances, arm evokes haunted shorelines, windswept cliffs and vast undersea caverns.

the blithe sonswe walk the young earth” compact disc

  • the book of names (10:45)
  • green patterns (7:25)
  • all children´s faces looking upwards (11:28)
  • the oldest living things (18:04)
  • we walk the young earth (5:16)
it was suggested some time ago (around the time that i started mms actually) that i start carrying (essentially: collecting) the various releases by the various ensembles affiliated with the mythic jewelled antler collective (which, afaict, mainly consists of only 3 people: glenn donaldson, steven smith, and loren chasse). it wasn’t until i happened upon this disc that everything clicked...

this both promises and delivers everything that is holy and sacred at the crossroads of acoustic instrumentation / distant outsider songcraft and droning / site-specific sound research. it would be neither clever nor accurate to lump the blithe sons in with sea-level dwellers from the “new weird americana” set (to me, their music has more in common with the distant, clanging in an empty water-passageway tunnel of david jackman’s long-running organum project). clearly this is a band of troglodytes, as these transcriptions were apparently made by dipping a single large-diaphragm condenser microphone into the uppermost chamber of their lair, hovering 60 feet above the band, as in rehearsal-preparation of pending equinox.

i’m deriving a certain grand (and frankly, voyeuristic) pleasure out of these wayfaring oddities, which are unlike just about anything i’ve heard from the contemporary sound-spectrum.

we walk the young earth
fv21 cd

the third full-length release from the blithe sons, the duo of loren chasse (coelacanth, thuja, of) and glenn donaldson (skygreen leopards, the birdtree, thuja). compiled from performances that took place under a creek bridge in san gregorio and inside wwii-era bunkers on sea cliffs in the marin headlands, california. with acoustic guitar, harps, bells, harmonium, toy-amplifiers, gongs submerged in a creek, cymbals, battery-powered keyboards, vocals, banjo, birds, pipes, bell-blocks, drums, branches and the location itself as an instrument, these album weaves minimalist hymns with stark drones. the blithe sons conjure an imaginary wilderness through the sounds made within these mysterious locales, combining chasse's leanings towards tones and percussive textures with donaldson's folk-inflected melodies.

thuja - thuja - lp
imprec173 - lp

this is a limited edition of 500 copies on lp.

improvisational bay area quartet thuja create aural landscapes that capture the reverberations of wood and wire, the sounds of breaking sticks and scraping stones, and the ambience of their surroundings into a shifting, dynamic musical framework. the members of thuja play off each other and the space they inhabit with a natural instinct, succeeding in conjuring spectral compositions which are at once abstract yet inviting.

for this self-titled release, their sixth full-length and first for important records, thuja have assembled recordings from various live performance spaces (the hemlock, the oaklandish gallery, pehr space, kains greenhouse) and have welcomed a variety of guests into the fold to help assist and expand their microscopic psychedelia toward a new plateau. after eight years, the semi-annual gathering of the members of thuja is almost traditional, but new clearings are still to be discovered in its thickets of sound.

this self-titled release is yet another essential artifact from thuja's ongoing explorations.

the child readers music heard far off · sab 021

the child readers tread the implied ground that lies somewhere between a music heard far off and a music finally pulled together. active since 2000, loren chasse and jason honea, the child readers, present the disparate dualities of metaphysical improvisation and meticulous composition in their otherworldly recordings, an adventurous & dense take on art-pop songwriting unheard since the heyday of cherry red and 4ad (imagine eyeless in gaza nicking from the xiu xiu or richard youngs songbook).

rather than solely draw from any musical discourse, the child readers found inspiration in the creative adventures of rockwell kent, lawren harris, charles burchfield and sherwood anderson in making their fourth & best album, music heard far off. presenting music bathed in the beauty of everyday things, the crs’ avant-pastiche approach touches upon musique concrète, pastoral pop, new romanticism, fractured folk & minimal techno with equal prejudice. sonic prayers to country, wastes of sea, songs, drawings, particular times of day and different furs are all presented here as esoteric sing-a-longs.  aiding honea & chasse’s vision are three short films (the video album ‘superstition island,’ contained on the disc), eye-popping album artwork, and contributions from mark williams (mirza), rob reger (thuja) and christine boepple (ov).

music heard far off was recorded, played back, re-recorded and collaged in various locales, including the california redwoods and coastlines, estonia, berlin, madrid and portugal.  the true stories contained therein unite listener and creator for a unique musical experience; the duo’s confessional torch songs offer an intimacy that may embarrass the untrue of heart.

sab 018 ov noctilucent valleys

there exists a sense of optimism in ov’s humming analog drones, a floating light within a pack of ominous clouds. building from their brilliant debut cdr, nocilucent valleys takes ov's expansive palette, blurrs and disguises instrumental thresholds, and presents sheer sound augmented by mysterious and mesmerizing gentle clamor. initial impressions slowly morph into demonstrative bliss, synthesizing the organic and the unknown.

ov is the new project from prolific, longtime collaborators (and recent newlyweds) christine boepple and jewelled antler’s loren chasse, both of san francisco. ov pushes the duo’s established scopic pallette further into the void. touching upon traditional minimalism and psychedelic free-form folk music, nocilucent valleys plays like the soundtrack to an otherworldly fairy tale, with foggy oscillations guiding the extrinsic myth.

abstract in presentation yet concrete in execution, the limitless creations that form nocilucent valleys harken to the amorphous eternal music of angus maclise, william basinski’s wondrous expanses, the sounds synthesis of richard pinhas or francisco lopez, alastair galbraith’s ur-drones, and markus popp or matthew bower at their most transcendental.

loren chasse & michael northam
the otolith
cd

release date: october 2008

the recordings of loren chasse and michael northam begin and end with the great outdoors. yet, the well-documented wanderlust of these two kindred sound artists is only part of the equation. field recordings of wind, water, and stone intertwine and hybridize within private rituals of droning psychedelic ragas that return as a folklore reiterating the mystery of the natural world around us. through his numerous contributions to the multi-faceted jewelled antler as well his solo work, chasse has long postulated the microphone as an extension of his ear, which magnifies and probes the surface of the earth for a tactile grit that permeates all of the sounds that he generates. northam claims his inspiration from vast geographies, microscopic detail, and severe weather, which he compacts through various techniques to explore what is between improvisation and acousmatic composition. both chasse and northam entertain such notions through an alchemy of arcane instruments: autoharps, ouds, flutes, bells, gongs, bowed wires, harmonium, and northam's magnetic table harp.

the otolith is the result of several years of work, with sounds gathered collectively in the san francisco bay area and throughout europe. the album speaks as a bramble of fence wire and chaparral scrub oak, acquiring an unkempt collection of rubbish, cobwebs, insects, and soil within its tangle. as the wind pushes in one direction, this mass emits a quite if scratchy melody as if the ghost from a forgotten song; but when the wind changes directions, it bellows a rasping din of metal and vine cracking against itself. this sodden calliope tumbles into a miasma of droning atmospheres, softly rasped distortion, and very subtly rendered lulabies lurking deep within the overgrowth.

december 2008 release ; holy grail time here folks ...

by the time i was made aware of just what a treasure trove the “jewelled antler cd-r library” series (released, one a month, during 2003) was, the discs in question were long unavailable, banished to the realm of myth & mystery, their hand-drawn artwork(s) relegated to .jpg files on assorted discography pages ...

lo and behold, the wise ones over at porter records (a young label, known primarily for their free jazz releases by the likes of henry grimes, odean pope, and khan jamal) saw some unjustice in this inavailability & set out to once again make this series, largely responsible for launching the career(s) of kemialliset ystävät, fursaxa, uton, dead raven choir, claypipe, and any number of the various combinations of the key jewelled antler players (loren chasse, glenn donaldson, steven r. smith, and rob reger) available to the discerning connoisseur who, like me, was largely unaware of this music as it was unfolding ...

the label has done a bang-up job, squeezing the entire contents of all 12 mini-cdrs onto four discs (with bonus material(s) from the shadowy the ways of god to man exclusive to this set) and housing everything inside a foil-stamped box along with a series of 14 double-sided, full-color cards (detailed below) reprinting the original designs and themes ...

easily one of my top releases of 2008, a life-saver for the latter-day jewelled antler fanatic ; highest recommendation !!!

2004 release ; first global transmission from the kuala lumpur-based “experimental musicians and artists co-operative malaysia” , whose various members contribute 5 of the 25 tracks herein ...

the other 20 are from a who’s who of the int’l sound-research circuit and are of phenomenally high quality (the exoticity of the label’s point of origin must have been a contributing factor in getting all involved to contribute vital examples of their work instead of 2nd-tier comp-track dreck) ...

what i’m finding the most enjoyable about this set is the curatorial aspect ... the wide variety of approaches and fidelities on display somehow all blur boundaries in a highly listenable fashion (i.e. instead of segueing the work of like-minded auteurs into dovetail-like situations, the digital pieces morph into the analog into the lo-fi into the composed into the improvised ... many labels could learn volumes from the sequencing of this record alone), making this amongst the first comps to have a “soul”, so to speak...

completely essential listening, one of my favorite comps from recent times ...
