singer is the rock band peopled by robert a. a. lowe, todd rittmann, adam vida and ben vida. their music has two guitars, bass and some drums, plus four lovesome voices that may or may not have given the band their name (we don’t know for sure, they’re kinda tightlipped when not singing).

the unhistories sound is psychedelic, but not in the paisley way. more mind expanding / modern ... get it straight, singer isn’t referencing any past trend in music. their original idea involves their (very) original compositions tangling with voices stumbling, clucking, heaving, whipping, shrieking and sighing in a graceful jumble. this is a crux.

they’ve played around a little bit and there’s a convivial breeze that blows the air on show evenings. singer stride forth from the crowd and strike their variations on the pose. then the semi-describable wham of their show, a friendly sidling that shatters into lurching, explosive entertainment without fail. a stiff-legged stomp with that argument of harmony voices uncoiling throughout.

what do you expect? it’s kinda tense or it’s nothing.

but it’s not a nightmare, just a weird dream. don’t be afraid!

this is only the beginning. singer are going to take the show on the road, but the craft of transport comes first. this is unhistories. by way of introduction, the record is packaged in a way that brings the fun and the fury of singer into your hands, your home, your lap, your eyes, ears and headphones with life, weight and a glossy polish. as you work your way through the tactile designs of the music and its housing, you’ll incline to ask:

were they laughing their asses off when they did this?

nobody writes or wraps ‘em like singer. nobody ever has. why do you think the called it unhistories?

white/lichens is the collaboration between matt clark and jeremy lemos' heavy guitar drone group white/light and robert lowe's lichens, who adds his voice, guitar and piano.

while white/light's name was inspired by the velvets' feedback-drenched "white light/white heat," they also claim as influences earth 2, fripp and eno, and the guitar solo on the title track from maggot brain.

the album's five tracks are named after demons from the goetia, evoked and compelled into obedience by king solomon, contained in a bronze vessel that was sealed with magic symbols. as a result, the music is alight with giant, pulsating fire storms of oceanic sound and shorter pieces that are the sonic equivalent to opening cans containing mechanical dreams.

there is a magic to these sounds that surely goes back to that first electronic musician in egypt over 2,000 years ago. the tools might be different but the spectacular results are the same.

the second long player from lichens, like his first, the largely improvised the psychic nature of being, is an ascent to a higher plane. rob lowe's sound recordings are of a distinctly personal nature, works turned inward as much as they are projected outward.

this new album was conceived with the idea of it being a continuation of the first, while using slightly different techniques in recording and editing; from multitracking individual passes, and pulling single tracks in and out of the mix ("vevor of agassou" "faeries"), to opening up into a completely different process by overdubbing multiple tracks ("m st r ng w tchcr ft l v ng n sp r t"). all this while remaining firmly within the realm of improvisation, augmented with the use of skeletal frameworks.

the accompanying dvd video contains a single live 28 minute performance from chicago's empty bottle that was recorded in 2006. all lichens live shows are individual events and are not mere duplications of previous performances. thus, the performance here is a unique snapshot of the lichens live experience. the film was directed and produced by mary scherer and edited by todd mattei.

on fazo iv: la kvalito de speguloj, robert aiki aubrey lowe (lichens, singer, 90 day men) constructs haunting, beautiful, at times hypnotic rhythms and melodies using synthesizers. his love of the warm, bubbling, physical sounds of the synthesizer permeates these seven songs, which seem simultaneously strangely familiar yet also somehow distant and alien.

fazo iv: la kvalito de speguloj (phase 4: the quality of mirrors) is a further extension of lowe’s exploration of sonic vocabularies and emotional landscapes. because the modes lowe utilizes are tonally and melodically universal to his ear, he has titled the album in the language of esperanto -- the universal language constructed to foster international understanding and peace. this notion of univeral understanding comes through in waves on fazo iv. there is a certain tranquility in these tracks -- something very meditative and therapeutic; a calming honesty that leads the mind inward and transcends language.

... as psyched i am for this mammoth set of alternating renditions of rhys chatham’s “guitar trio pt. 1” and “guitar trio pt.2” - i can’t help but be a little bummed at the omission of either of the boston takes (which, to my amp-damaged ears, sounded quite fine w/chris brokaw, david daniell, winston bramman, myself, and the devil music guys essentially playing a single-chord to a sold-out allston-rock-city crowd for over an hour) - but that’s neither here nor there ...

what you do get from this excellent triple-disc box are takes from the brooklyn, buffalo, chicago, cleveland, milwaukee, minneapolis, montreal, and toronto stagings of the piece during february 2007, performed with ludicrously high levels of energy by chatham himself, along with such notables as andrew broder, tony conrad, david daniell, kim gordon, alan licht, robert longo, rob “lichens” lowe, doug mccombs, thurston moore, jon mueller, harris newman, jeff parker, lee ranaldo, chris rosenau, adam & ben vida, etc ...

if you don’t know the piece ; it’s essentially an exercise in yielding what chatham himself describes as “choiring” - a heavy, upper-register buildup of harmonic movement that results when so many guitar players, over 20 minutes, slowly work across an open e minor chord from the low e to the high e, at deafening volume, while a single drummer keeps time on a hi-hat (pt. 1) or contributes with a “driving backbeat” followed by a long fill / freak-out (pt. 2) - it’s the ultimate in high-gain rock ‘n’ roll minimalism, really, and because of the open interpretation, the piece can swing pretty heavily in a number of directions given the players - hence this collection offering 5 different realizations of each part by 8 different groups ...

highly recommended as a historical document and as a testament to the piece’s lasting relevance ...

utilizing multiple electric guitars and a single chord, 1977’s “guitar trio” is composer rhys chatham’s signature work, and a euphoric, minimal-punk classic. it’s an inspired amalgamation — the droning, shimmering harmonics of john cale and tony conrad fused with the power and fury of the ramones — that had a meteoric impact. it placed chatham at the forefront of the burgeoning no wave scene; its influence then spread further, as protégés and participants in chatham’s ensembles — including glenn branca and members of sonic youth — folded the sound into their own. “guitar trio” remains a composition with a half-life, an adventure in sound that continues to radiate influence and inspiration.

... lovely little book / mini-cd package featuring the illustrations / narrative of rose lazar accompanied by the music of rob “lichens” lowe (more recently heard in the chicagoland “supergroup” signer) ... rob’s sparking arpeggiations are a nice/friendly listen, but the book itself is the draw here, full of detail-heavy continuous-line episodes ... lovely stuff.

robert lowe was a member of the band 90 day men and currently plays music under the name lichens. he is an absolute fixture in the chicago music and arts community. rose lazar runs her own hand-printed goods company called the great lakes goods.

gyromancy looks at future past, neo antiquity, ritual magic, and patterning. the book represents a dream walk through nature and all of its influences. repetition of imagery keeps you aware of the cyclical patterns that nature presents us with. we get caught up in these patterns without noticing them, to the point that you have to stop and take a harder look. gyromancy is an attempt at taking a harder look.

the music composed to accompany the images in the book is there to do just that. to add yet another dimension to the world that inhabits its pages.

with this november 2006 “special” issue it’s pretty much official; the sound projector is the best experimental music magazine running, at least from my jilted standpoint...

in this issue mr. pinsent selects a stack of vinyl from his shelf, then sits down and concocts witty expositions on their contents, methods of acquisition, etc... the whole thing has this ritualistic flair but never dips into sheer repetition; there’s always something interesting to say, some revelation to be found.

records reviewed in this issue range from recent noise vinyl way on back to 60s esp-disk originals; not your “keeping up with the new release schedules” coverage here, no sir... ed is as likely to review a rare 1970 french prog lp as he is the new fusetron title.

it’s a joy to read and genuinely funny to boot. if you’ve ever pored the shelves of your local mom & pop record shop for dusty experimental gelt, you’ll be familiar with the thrill of the hunt celebrated within these pages. very highly recommended!
