sateenkaarisuudelma is my fourth solo album under the name es. the double lp is a trilogy containing three independent parts: sateenkaarisuudelma, maailmankaari and pianokaari.

sateenkaarisuudelma contains songs i’ve played live since 2002. these songs were composed and recorded during the same period i made kaikkeuden kauneus ja käsittämättömyys cd. at some point it became obvious i was doing two albums at once. also i soon realised that these songs would benefit and work well in vinyl format allowing me to divide songs to different sides and also give them an aging and changing format.

with sateenkaarisuudelma ready for pressing already in july 2004 i started my journey to canada, toronto where i studied fine arts for four months. during this time i also made a ten day tour in usa with miriam goldberg on cello, jeffrey alexander on guitar and effects, tara burke on vocals and keyboard. shary boyle did live drawings on overhead projectors. it was an excellent collaboration and the fruits can be heard on the second lp’s side c. maailmankaari i and ii were recorded in boston at the wmbr radio station.

side d finishes of the trilogy with two songs composed as early as 2002. i’ve recorded the first song universaali totuus at least five or six times. this version was recorded in june of 2005 just before sending it to pressing. pianokaari was mutilated, cut and changed for three years. these two songs span the whole duration of the recording and creation of this double album.

all this time juri puhakka was working on the drawings on the sleeves. featured on the cover is me with rainbows ponting directly at my hands. it represents hope for understanding dreams are within ones grasp. other musicians featured on the covers are suvi mäkinen who has been a part of the es live line-up many times. jan anderzen and i have collaborated on so many occasions that the facts get blurred. elissa määttänen has appeared on all but the first album and continues to contribute her vocals to es live shows as well as the recorded releases. other musicians on the album are jeffrey alexander and miriam goldberg from the black forest / black sea duo and laura naukkarinen (aka. lau nau). all my gratitude goes out to these people who have been an integral part in the birth of this double lp.

made with teenage passion

sometime late last century two shy youngsters came face to face with each other and the world. mikko, a reincarnation of elvis from rovaniemi on the arctic circle, and laura, a former slayer fan, soon discovered that they shared a similar outlook on life. ethereal and warm, the pair of them drifted closer and closer to each other until they ended up living under one roof. together, in a universe of their own, they found various instruments – and the musical projections onto cassette tapes achieved through these – to be one of the most natural methods of communication available to them. these are the origins of chamellows, a band which based its activities on actively concealing its works from the audience.

in 1999, i was presented with a rare opportunity to obtain a relatively comprehensive collection of their recordings. i immediately felt an affinity with the music. chamellows first appeared peaceful and good-natured, occasionally extremely infectious and easy to approach. this was merely a first impression, though; gradually the music began to reveal other dimensions, layers that were darker, more anxious and more difficult. i have continued to listen to the band fairly regularly ever since. as is the case with classics, the music still suggests new ways to interpret and approach itself. to my mind, its most obvious quality is a creative passion, as well as a kind of sincere tension between the tranquillity offered by the living rooms used for the recordings and the roofs above them, and the world outside. at times, chamellows seem to integrate into the rest of it, in a way of their own, at other times they simply want to disappear from sight. mostly, however, they remain on the outside, so to speak. they often escape analysis but invariably sound good, to say the least. and, deep down, this is the definition of the music of chamellows: it is rewarding, dark, unadulterated, bloody, tender, ethereally floaty and unique.

chamellows no longer exist in their original form. i feel the mark they left was sizable, especially now that sami has released this anthology. mikko and laura have drifted apart, gone their separate ways. this album is therefore also something of a large memory – a sample of the reality shared by two people in the 1990s and at the turn of the millennium. i also see it as evidence of the fact that something finite or temporary can be just as significant as something still in progress or an infinity defined by some fateful idea. the album's air is one of unforcedness: chamellows are their true – more or less inhibited –selves, they show themselves in their true nature and thereby really reveal something of their world to us. in other words, this collection is also a kind of document; even so, it is not the truth. but who cares about truths when holding one of the most important finnish albums ever released?

the music of kiila has undergone something of a metamorphosis during the past three years. on the new album silmät sulkaset, the band gently conjures up mildly otherworldly tunes with a peaceful air and feathered eyes. what was once free pop played by two is now free folk played by seven. the language of the songs has reverted back to finnish, and the human voices rest on a warm texture of sounds from an array of acoustic and electronic instruments. carefully arranged songs alternate with those improvised on the spot, all bearing the mark of a handcrafted article.

much has happened since kiila’s 2001 album heartcore, then. the band spent nearly two years feeling for a direction and, once confident enough, completed silmät sulkaset in less than a year (apart from the improvised piece kiviä ja taivasta which dates further back to a wintry evening in ulvila). the change in direction can be partly explained by the addition of new members. in the course of three years, five of our friends became bandmates. juho kaitajärvi, markus mäki, laura naukkarinen, juri puhakka and sami rouhento all brought many influences with them; thanks to their contributions, the new album is the fruit of a collective effort above all.

the established yet highly flexible line-up has encouraged kiila to play out considerably more often than in the past. our area of operation has also extended well beyond our native shores: in march 2003, kiila appeared live in sweden, denmark and belgium as well as finland. we slept little and drove lots, played some nice venues and met the nicest of people. in october, we celebrated the tenth anniversary of kiila by recording a session for vpro radio and appearing at a soirée held by the station in amsterdam alongside three notable american acts.

silmät sulkaset is jointly released by fonal records and k-raa-k3. later this spring, fonal records will also be releasing a collection of kiila music videos on limited edition vhs. contemporaries-vhs features eleven directors presenting their visual impressions of songs on heartcore and the free will is hard to kill ep. some of the videos have been shown in europe and south america before. in early march, two kiila videos were featured in the music video screenings at tampere film festival.

in 2004, we look forward to travelling around, making new friends, playing lots of music and having fun together while doing it. chances are our next album will not take as long to appear as this one did. – give them our fastest steeds!

heartcore
cd

the first full-length by the finnish duo kiila. this album has been in the making for two years and now it's finally out. packed in a beautiful 6-page digipack it contains nine tracks and total of 39 minutes of music.

kiila makes music with everything thats around, a massive array of instruments have been used here, clockwork, bowed saw, bowed guitars and bassguitars, drums, percussions, computers... you name it.

the album is full of heart and has received many warm words from all over the world.

"heartcore has preserved a lot of sustained work and spontaneous expression. we have spent time and energy on listening to music, talking and thinking about it. we have listened to these songs as to our favourite records: critically, carefully and with devotion, often and for long periods of time, in many situations and states of mind. the main difference between these processes - listening to our favorite records and listening to heartcore - has been that we have changed the sounds on heartcore whenever necessary. we have omitted sounds, played new ones or modified existing ones. we have thought about arrangements, searched for sounds and altered structures. the whole time, however, making music has been subordinate to listening to it."

- niko-matti ahti (from the linear notes)

last year saw an explosion & all too welcome interest in a vital, tightly knit scene of artists from finland. out of the communal circle of prodigious finnish musicians comes this lovely 10 song debut solo outing of abstract folk, stray kiss lullaby & plucked blues by laura naukkarinen

sung in her native tongue, kuutarha intimates a secret language outside traditional word speak into something utterly beautiful & unrestrained. melody is suggested through the contours of voice, guitar & violin and arrangement has less to do with the placement of things than with lau’s comfort in letting sounds fall where they may.
