the skull defektsopen the gates of mimer (live at norberg) 2006-01-10” compact disc

  • open the gates of mimer (live at norberg) 2006-01-10
skull defekts freakout!!! debut album on aa (not to be confused with dilloway’s aa; totally diff. imprint) from henrik rylander and joachim nordwall, with special guests lasse marhaug & thomas ekelund...
aa press release...
the skull defekts
title: open the gates of mimer
ref: aa04
format: cd (thick, heavy, hand-printed cover, limited edition of 500 copies)

the skull defekts is a newly-formed outfit from gothenburg, sweden, which features ex-members of union carbide productions, kid commando, cortex, anticimex and lpc. the core of the group is none other than henrik rylander and joachim nordwall (both respected solo artists in their own right). among the countless guests and collaborations, they have worked with such contemporary legends as norwegian noise god lasse marhaug and japanese ex-can singer damo suzuki, with whom they toured scandinavia in early 2005.

the sound of the skull defetks ranges from intense noise to rhythmical hypnotic sounds with heavy drones. this is meaty monotonous math rock and advanced noise experiments at its best.

this is a limited edition live document from sweden's norberg festival and features henrik rylander, joachim nordwall, thomas ekelund and lasse marhaug. this is best described as a 55+ minute performance piece, which comes in hand-printed and numbered covers made by jeff mueller at dexterity press (chicago, il). late 2006 will see a full-band, full-length album on aa, a split lp with wolf eyes and russell haswell for fang bomb and another split lp with the providence avant rockers made in mexico for phono-statique (australia).

  • fungus for fellini (15:04)
...and for his 11th release this year (thusfar), lasse pulls out all the stops and offers what, to my ears, sounds like his most “playful” release yet (listen to that sound-sample; i haven’t heard that sort of pitch-bending or those “wacky” stereo effects from lasse as-of-yet. signs of a new direction? maybe not) ... but even still this is an impressive head-conk-with-monkey-wrench ; glad to see that he’s developing a sense of humor regarding his prolificity ...
anoema press release...
lasse marhaug
quality control
cd nocd040

a giant of scandinavian experimental music, lasse marhaug has been active in sound creation since his teenage years. his interests have spanned a wide range of styles: from improv jams to film sound, from humorous collages to crushing harsh noise works. this non-stop activity has resulted in a massive body of recorded work and numerous live performances all over tellus. besides his solo work he has collaborated with a multitude of fellow sound artists on stage and in the studio.

in the everflowing stream of music from marhaug, quality control leans towards the noisiest end of his output. with an active, hands-on approach to sound making, it rushes forward to present us with a panoramic view of a mock world inhabited by trash electronics battling it out on a barren desert field at the end of the known universe. from short outbursts to extended epics, marhaug cooks up an explosive brew of storming feedback and out-rock guitar overload. quality control portrays a mature artist at the top of his game.

jazzkammerpulse” compact disc

bottrop-boy press release...
jazzkammer
pulse
cd / b-boy 017

jazzkammer are lasse marhaug and john hegre from norway. together they have been making music as jazzkammer since 1998. past releases include timex, rolex (a remix album), pancakes and a live album with merzbow. jazzkammer are relentless sound explorers with no set style or specific 'sound' - they move swiftly from hardcore overload electronics and sonic freakouts to lowercase soundscapes and location recordings. once described as 'sonic architects', marhaug and hegre insist they are merely trying to make 'good music'.

pulse was recorded in singapore during the sars-crisis in april of 2003. it was inspired by a theatre piece of the same title that they were working on at the same time, though the music on the cd does not resemble that of the play. the album pulse is a single beautiful 32-minute piece; its basic structure is a drifting electronic drone that slowly unfolds and mutates, with subtle layers of location recordings and vinyl-static adding color and depth. like pancakes, pulse has a cinematic feel to it, a feeling that is further enhanced by the photos of acclaimed photographer yuen chee wai that grace the cover and 12-page booklet.

frode gjerstad / lasse marhaugred edge” compact disc

  • a dry well
  • red edge
  • falling down
  • the first rule
this is the same disc as the previously stocked gb 55 (gameboy), just got it from a different source/label!...

ah, my old friend the co-release. it’s been a few years (last one i can remember was that nels cline single that was released by a few coley-orbit orgs back in the mid 90s). this one by no less than 5 labels (breathmint, carbon, gameboy, little mafia, and sunship). listed here as a gameboy release as, well, these copies are from mike and that’s the end of that...

sonically... gjerstad’s rifling through some sort of duck-call / tortured emperor-penguin real-book, lasse’s all rumble-pit & hades-brim/sampled fireworks (laptop? i assume he’s playing a laptop computer...).

actions herein are separate, hardly equal, yet compellingly meshed into a single sound-form. a-grade contemporary electro-acoustic improv...
carbon press release...
oh man. must be that these norwegeians get bored out of their minds inwinter. something keeps them rocking out an insane number of releases.

these two boys have joined forces before, but that doesn't mean you've heard anything like this. gjerstad unleashes free noise flotation saxophone licks from somewhere between his lips and his lungs. marhaug backs him up with electronics that range from glitch-like to to lo-fi to just straight rumbling. he manages to run all over the place, but frode's overpowering sax (and his consistency with it) keeps him in line.

co-released with carbon, sunship and breathmint. first gameboy disc to come all shrinkwrapped and fancy-like. it even has an anti-theft device so if you try and lift it from the virgin megastore, you are so busted.

cat. no. ideal027
year 2005
format cd
info 600 copies in jewelcase

this is without doubt one of the best recorded and coolest sounding advanced-experimental music records we have laid our ears upon. it's a document of the true power in sound and noise recorded at the swedish national radio. in the hands of mats gustavsson, dror feiler and lasse marhaug sound and noise are getting vital again. three true masters that whip the cream and blood outta their equipment, taking us to unknown territories of music, challenge and sound. a modern power trio, and debut album by this proud line up.

about the band members:

mats gustafsson (b. 1964) maybe the most important and well-known improvisational musician in sweden today. since the late 80's he has collaborated with such names as peter brotzmann, sonic youth, otomo yoshihide and ken vandermark on a regular basis but is also known for his exciting solo projects for solo saxophone, most recently the amazing "slide" album for firework editions and "catapult" for doubtmusic. he is also playing with ingebrigt haaker-flaten and paal nilssen-love as the thing and with thurston moore and jim o'rourke as diskaholics anonymous trio, amongst other shapes and forms with different artists.

dror feiler (b. 1951) dror feiler is based in stockholm and have since his arrival to the city in the late 70's become a very important figure for the swedish modern art & music scene. feiler is a very political person and is very outspoken and sometimes controversial. he has been a key figure for many years at fylkingen in stockholm and is working with visual arts, electro-acoustic composition , noise, opera, ballet and compositions for orchestras. as an improviser, he is infamous for his group lokomotiv konkret who has blown audiences away since 1977.

lasse marhaug (b. 1974) lasse has over the last ten years been one of the leading forces in the so-called norwegian noise scene. as a performer and composer he has over a hundred releases to his name, as well as extensive touring and performing in europe, asia and america. in addition to his solo work, marhaug plays regularly in projects jazzkammer, del, rishaug marhaug and a duo with frode gjerstad. past projects include origami replika and lasse marhaug band. he has collaborated with several artists in his own field of music, but has over the years also worked with artists in the improv, free jazz, drone rock and extreme metal scenes, as well as theatre, dance and video.

lasse marhaug has a discography as long as your arm and a list of previous collaborators that would scare the pants off us if they were all in the same room, but that wouldn't matter if he didn't drop the heavy jams. and ketchup cavern number 2 is the heaviest yet! this is a physical record, instead of someone twisting knobs it sounds like someone slapping you around and yelling in your ear for five minutes and five seconds. total radness!

those of you familiar with sundin’s excellent / hilarious “the history of electronic music” book on häpna will immediately be in familiar terrain ; to my knowledge no one else out there is documenting such historical / contemporary experimental music minutiae with such skill & grace ... highly recommended !!!

very friendly #1
cataloguenumber: maginot05
year: 2009
format: 7" single comic mini poster
units: 300

the first release in the komplott maginot series is very friendly by the swedish sound artist ronnie sundin.

very friendly is a comic book project that subjectively collects its material from the world of experimental electronic music and will mix stories of an autobiographical nature with historical accounts. in other words; the reader will get a chance to meet some of sundin's musician friends and colleagues as well as take part of some historical events where a classic recording or performance took place.

the first issue of very friendly, released in april 2009, presents stories on sundin’s first meeting with the legendary norwegian noise musician lasse marhaug in trondheim back in 1998, the outrageous world premiere of desérts by edgard varése in paris in 1954 and a very strange gig by throbbing gristle at the cryptic one club in london in 1978.

this issue also includes 7vinyl with a soundtrack to the trondheim story provided by lasse marhaug himself.

melektronikk's latest gift to you is a split cd entitled "brakhage". noise titan lasse marhaug aka jazzkammer, and debutant andreas meland shares the circle with very different and individual pieces. both pieces was originally performed live in 2003 during a screeening of classic silent movies by the legendary american filmmaker stan brakhage (1933-2003). since then, both artists have reworked and expanded the live material extensively for this release.

lasse marhaug should be known to all fans of leftfield electronic music and noise by now. he has been active on the international tape/noise scene for over 10 years, with a production of frightening proportions counting over a 100 releases as solo artist or collaborator. t's meaningless to compare lasse marhaugs music to others; his musical identity is too strong, he has his own style. lasse marhaug's music is never out of focus, and always keeps you on the edge of your chair; listening!

dror feiler / lasse marhaugno more drama” long playing record

  • he-male (15:20)

  • no more drama (15:20)
december 2008 release ; total fucking annihilation, jointly channeled through the bells/circuits of dror feiler & lasse marhaug ...

seriously, this has to be one of the most impenetrable sides that’s landed here @ mms in recent months, maybe tied only with the recent mattin / junko lp on tochnit aleph for immediate annoy-on-impact tactics (it’s akin to throwing a zippo at a fireworks truck & dancing around while trying not to get burned by m-80s whizzing past your head) ...

if you think borbetomagusnoise-improv spec borders on the “tame” ; you’ve found your next vicarious thrill-ride ...
no fun productions press release...
nfp-37 marhaug/feiler  "no more drama"

edited live recordings, sometimes sounds like a borbetomagus storm, sometimes sounds like being in the middle of a bombing in palestine. a picture of this record should be next to every definition of noise music. lasse marhaug plays in jazkamer and has at least 300 other great projects solo and with other people. dror feiler  served as a paratrooper in the israel defense forces, and refused to serve in the occupied territories in the early 70's. he is now a swedish-israeli musician and artist and has been living in stockholm, sweden since 1973. he is active as a composer of modern music and enjoys giving  ear problems and headaches to classically trained musicians. the most brutal vinyl record you will hear this year.

jazkamer / smegmaendless coast” compact disc

  • heavy fog (11:42)
  • white witch (5:33)
  • portland swamps (5:55)
  • stone eater (3:15)
  • carniviorous bog (8:13)
supersession involving the full smegma lineup (dr. id, ju suk reet meate, conroy, burned mind, oblivia) with an expanded jazkamer lineup (lasse marhaug, john hegre, and carlos giffoni) - the acoustic/plunderphonic cromp of smegma (much ayler-ian funeral-march freedom) meshing perfectly with the guitar & electronics of the norwegian/bushwick contingent.

aside from the fact that jazkamer and smegma are two of my favorite contemporary units; this record has much staying power aside from the initial jolt - both sides let down their guard in spots and the music sways readily from pointilist improv jank to full-bore skree. excellent stuff.

a collaboration between american underground psychedelic/noise pioneers (and still kicking hard now for over 30 years) smegma and norweigan noise/metal masters jazkamer. from two totally different worlds and approaches to sound a totally original abstract language is born creating an imaginary coast that extends from the brutality of the scandinavian frozen seas to the dark and mysterious rock filled beaches of the american northwest - a landscape full of strange creatures and beings, an eternal and endless coast. recorded and mixed at smegma’s legendary home base portland studio.

jazkamer / mark durgansplit” seven inch single record

  • jazkamer - tonal protest (6:59)

  • mark durgan - the roots of beech trees wrapped in moss (5:51)
april 2008 release ; split single by jazkamer (the time-tested lasse marhaug / john hegre lineup here augmented by moha! / noxagt’s anders hana) & mark “putrefier” durgan ...

jazkamer’s side : a crispy room-recording of guitar/electronic banshee-wail - exactly what you love/expect from these guys ... but, for me at least, the real treat / surprise is mark durgan’s side : an almost musique-concrète study using cracked electronics, bird-sounds, and the kind of anti-music moves he undoubtedly picked up whilst collaborated with richarn “tnb” rupenus (aside from the lovely & o/p birthbiter lp, mark was one of the shadowy figures who fleshed out the tnb ranks @ atp a few years back ...)

this no-fi 7” series is one of the best things going @ the moment ... a bit on the pricey side, yes, but so worth it ...
no-fi press release...
jazkamer / mark durgan
split 7”
released by no-fi ~ cat no: neu006 ~ released march 2008
limited to 500 copies

another vital instalment in no-fi’s growing and collectable vinyl catalogue, this 7” sees the head-on collision of two major acts in the european noise circuit.

norway’s jazkamer is the electronics and guitar duo of lasse marhaug and john hegre, best known for their ‘metal machine music’ death metal concept album but also for the searing blasts of electricity that typify their more noise-oriented work. marhaug is a major figure in international noise, well-known for having more releases to his name than many people have in their collections. for this release, they also recruit fellow norwegian and multi-tasking guitar-mangling prodigy anders hana (noxagt, moha!) - as if they needed any help to kick out the jams on this jawdroppingly raucous live recording.

in contrast, the flip side features something significantly more serene from mark durgan (who you may also know as putrefier and who is rumoured to have been part of the mystery line-up of the new blockaders at thurston mooore’s all tomorrows parties). subsonic rumbles and birdsong dominate the surface of this track, but the devil’s in the detail – poke your attention through the thin surface ice and you’ll easily fall through to hidden depths.

this is another of no-fi’s trademark hand-stamped jukebox sleeve 7”s, with stunning centre label art by lasse marhaug.

great to look at, amazing to listen to !

pica disk press release...

jazkamer: metal music machine 2

pica026. cd. released november 2010.

"metal music machine 2" is the sequel to jazkamer's 2006 metal album "metal music machine". it is recorded with the same line-up, in the same studio, and continues the paths laid out by the first album; jazkamer exploring the deep dark fjords of metal. from 80's german thrash to überslow doom and 70's classic heavy metal; "metal music machine 2" is a varied platter of metal mania.

the original album was something of a surprise hit for the band, which lead to creating a live mmm-big band. the live incarnation swayed more in the direction of noise meltdown, but for "metal music machine 2" jazkamer takes a step back to pure metal; the album is perhaps more metal than the first and absolutely no noise or electronic elements can be heard.

jazkamer would like to dedicate "metal music machine 2" to the memory of ronnie james dio; the greatest voice of heavy metal who sadly passed away this year. as a sign of respect "metal music machine 2" is a completely instrumental album with no vokills.

pica disk press release...

jazkamer: failed state of mind

pica024. cd. released october 2010.

"failed state of mind" is jazkamer's 25th studio album. most people know of the infamous "that difficult 25th album", but for jazkamer the landmark number appears to have given no difficulties, as "failed state of mind" is the most mellow and easy-on-the-ears recording jazkamer since 2006's "panic".

the nine tracks that makes up the album is a drifting tapestry of droning guitars, distant location recordings and tasteful percussion work, all woven together in a seamless stream that is subtle and abstract. melody is hinted at, but never achieved, buried beneath layers of sound. one could almost thing that jazkamer is getting mellow in their older years. what sticks in the ear is the clarity with which jazkamer shifts between different swathes and bandwidths of noise. from moment to moment what you catch feels like a pinball machine, a child's electronic toy, a rasping insect, a fax, or simply the abstract whirr of sonic information; all caught up in an articulate but pressured streamline.

"fail state of mind" is a pure and profound release that sticks a new definition to naturalism. argentinian sound-wizard anla courtis contributes with guitar-work on two tracks. cover by san francisco-based photographer and artist suzy poling.

jazkamercover by hair stylistics” compact disc

  • 129 songs, no index (19:25)
july 2010 release ; july installment, a brusquenoisecore” variant with lasse, john, jørgen træen, and iver sandoy ...
pica disk press release...

jazkamer: cover by hair stylistics

pica021. cd. released july 2010.

"cover by hair stylstics" is the july edition of jazkamer's ongoing 2010 monthly compact disc series. this month's album finds hegre and marhaug joined by iver sandøy playing noisecore. noisecore is a crossover between grindcore and noise music. one could call it improvised grindcore, as its emphasis is on short bursts of blastbeat drumming backed by screaming vocals and heavily distorted guitar. often the music is improvised on the spot. early pioneers of noisecore were bands like gerogerigegege, 7 minutes of nausea and fear of god, and although the genre never flourished like grindcore, it nevertheless has lead a healthy underground life with bands like sissy spacek and october revolution.

jazkamer ventured into noisecore territory on 2008's "art breaker" album (smalltown superjazzz), which featured 59 songs in mere 17 minutes. many reviewers complained that 17 were even too much. despite this reaction "cover by hair stylstics" ups the ante with 129 songs in 20 minutes. because of the compact disc-format's limited index ability the songs are presented as one continious track. jazkamer also prefers the album to be experienced as a whole, rather than prominence given to individual songs.

for jazkamer's monthly 2010 series they have invited one different visual artist to contribute every month. the artwork of "cover by hair stylistics" is by the japanese actor, author and composer masaya nakahara. nakahara is know for him musical work with projects like hair stylistics, suicidal 10cc and violent onsen geisha. on the front cover nakarhara can be seen drawing the artwork used on the inside of the cover.

"cover by hair stylstics" was recorded during an excruciating two hours in duper studios in bergen. editing and mixing the material took even longer to complete and involved several coffee-breaks. pica disk hopes that jazkamer fans across the world will enjoy "cover by hair stylstics" for a long time.

september 2009 release ; haha, yeah ...

great plunderphonic (i’m hearing snatches of “hairy beast attack”, “a chinese ghost story”, and the like) construct from oren & lasse, based on location recordings (undoubtedly recorded from hotel-room television) during a joint tour of asia back in 2005 ...

absolutely 180º away from anything either have done on their own, much closer to the sound-world(s) of john wiese & aaron dilloway ... fun !!!

september 2009 release ; fourth release in this near-decade-long collaboration between maja solveig kjelstrup ratkje and lasse marhaug ...

nestled somewhere in the nether-regions between harsh noise, electro-acoustic improvisation, and plunderphonic collage-work, the two are obviously having a blast running the proverbial gamut (esp. on the respective cat and dog-themed pieces ; listen to the sound-sample for the former - yeah, like i wasn’t going to put that one up) ... great stuff !!!

oren ambarchi / lasse marhaugworried friends b/w nervous enemies” seven inch single record

  • worried friends (6:40)

  • nervous enemies (6:51)
october 2007 release ; a pair of “piano music” pieces, acting as the debut collaborative single from two of contemporary experimental music’s most prolific/consistently rewarding practitioners; oren ambarchi and lasse marhaug ...

those of you expecting something on par with maurizio pollini’s reading of satie’s gnossiennes might be a little shocked to find instead a fierce 12+ minute inside-piano scrape-fest, hedged with bursts of live-electronic feedback & a “hot” fidelity familiar from any number of david tudor recordings. .. yet at the same time not too far removed from the new blockaders’ whole gesamtnichswerk ; this is anti-music at its finest ...

not something for strict followers of oren’s friendly/subdued sine-guitar throb, nor lasse’s harsh wall of electronic sound; but definitely one for those whose preferences fall in the noisier end of the electro-acoustic composition/improv spectrum ...

2007 release ; the debut title on paal nilssen-love (aka the drummer for scorch trio, school days, the thing, territory band, etc...) ’s “pnl” imprint - a free improv set featuring lasse marhaug & nilssen-love himself, recorded @ spunk’s studio in 2004 (in fact spunk / fe-mail’s hild sofie tafjord not only produced the session but contributes “additional sounds” throughout ...)

if you can picture, in your mind’s eye, the most high-energy free-drumkit imaginable (nilssen-love goes completely batshit here) - then couple that with lasse’s obnoxious wall of free electronic sound - well, let’s just say this is one hell of a racket that doesn’t beg to be heard inasmuch as commands it ...

using tape-machine (cassette, sounds like), computer, synths, and all sorts of internal/external sound-transmogrifying tricks/techniques, lasse created these eleven miniatures, fairly removed from the straight-up harsh-noise he’s been developing over the past few decades, but in fact much closer to the kinds of pause-button tape music of people like howard stelzer, anton bruhin, and the like ... very cool disc.

lasse marhaug: ear era

cd - prisma records, norway - 2008

limited editon of 500 numbered copies. prisma records is the record label of the henie onstad art centre.

on lasse marhaug's "ear era"

in 2008 the henie onstad art centre invited musician and composer lasse marhaug to explore its audio archive. from the opening in 1968, henie onstad was intended as a cross-artistic arena, and soon became the leading arena in norway for experimental art in all genres. the archive contains over 800 tapes of recordings done in the centre's concert hall and in the norwegian studio for electronic music, which was located at the centre between 1975-1978.

the music ranges from recordings by karlheinz stockhausen, jan garbarek, laurie anderson, mauricio kagel, webster lewis, terry riley, svein finnerud trio, heinz holliger, bjørn fongaard, steve reich, karin krog, soft machine, julie driscoll, jokke and arne nordheim. the idea was not for marhaug to make a 'remix' of this unique archive of music history, but to use the recordings as raw material for a new piece of music. therefor musical trainspotters trying to identify the original artists will have a hard time as marhaug has surgically sliced and diced the recordings to (mostly) unidentifiable fragments before constructing his own piece.

the result of marhaug's explorations/exploitations is titled ear era. this is the cd version (500 numbered copies). the piece was also presented in three different concert-versions at the henie onstad art centre in the course of 2008.

jordslev hojaldre released on chrome tape and each cassette recorded on hi-quality cassette deck using dolby b noise reduction system.

morning star / evening fix
lp

please get ready for a true heavy weight team-up on this split lp. testicle hazard (lasse marhaug + tommi keränen) deliver a side-long orgy of blistering fuzzed-out heaviness. this is a duo that has very quickly proved that they are indeed capable of producing some truly ear-shattering noise bliss - two noise maestros doing what they love and live for, and you can feel privileged to indulge in the result of their hard work.

golden serenades (john hegre + jørgen træen) immediately locks into a devastating groove (for lack of a more suitable term), and a terribly convincing assault of metal clattering and a non-stop moving mass of forceful sonic onslaught of the highest order. when these norwegian lads team up, you can expect nothing less than noise nirvana. if you have yet to experience the thrill of golden serenades, this is where you get *on*.

origami replika
kommerz - merzbow in the hands of origami replika
cd

this cd sees origami replika (a now defunct part of the ever changing origami cultural collective/phenomenon) made up by three of norway's most diehard noiseheads -- lasse marhaug, tore h. bøe, and mads staff jensen. recorded in 1997, this effort is entirely based on sound sources from the back catalogue of merzbow. with no back-bending, knee-scraping humility, and with a pure love for all source sounds, origami replika have shaped classic merzbow sound into all-new compositions. these are innovative and highly potent re-workings of the harsh soundwaves, recommended to all those who still have a healthy addiction to the merzbow sounds of yesterday. thick and meaty, the blasts emanating from the speakers is filled with lusty, fetishized, organic heavy noise and experimental dadaism, ready to be devoured by the faithful disciples.

originally planned for release on another label, and now finally unleashed on segerhuva, this is a cd that has been tried and tested over and over again. these recordings, created almost a decade ago, have been remastered by lasse marhaug, and it is safe to say that this cd has stood the test of time. after nine years, it sounds remarkable -- a solid chunk of the classic, living breathing noise object that some call religion.

bottom line -- the noise fetish is still very much alive and well. this time it comes from a somewhat unexpected source. indulge!

new release: book and four cassettes
6.3.2010

camellia sinensis” is a 4 x cassette / 64 page book deluxe box-set by norwegian noise artist lasse marhaug. this release marks the 20th anniversary of marhaug as a recording artist (in reference one of the tracks is titled “20 years of nothing”), and features all new studio material recorded over the last two years in oslo. the eight 15 minute pieces that makes “camellia sinensis” are all full-on harsh noise, using different techniques and instrumentation (guitar, turntables, scrap metal, objects etc), to create a varied selection of material.

but the music is only half of “camellia sinensis”, as the box comes with a 64 page book of illustrations, photographs, drawings and texts, designed by marhaug. the book is loosely divided into chapters that mirrors the themes of the titles from the cassettes. there is also an interview with marhaug conducted by dogfart aspa, dealing with cassette culture, originally published in the special interests fanzine #1. the four cassettes are pro-duplicated with label printing, and the book printed on glossy paper. each book is numbered and signed by marhaug. there will be no reissue of this material.

only 100 copies will be made.

sämtliche musik von jazzkammer 2001.
zusätliche sounds auf seite eins von alexander rishaug.

knitter is the first 7" from this norwegian duo - guitarist, improviser and composer john hegre (also in der brief) and lasse marhaug, one of the most productive musicians in the international noise/experimental underground of the last 10 years (also in del and owner of the jazzassin records label) – this time with alexander rishaug who already participated on the last jazzkammer– longplayer "pancakes" (smalltown supersound).

this swedish label also released rolex, a remix-album of their first two cds with contributions by merzbow, thurston moore, pimmon and mayn others. jazzkammer combines timbre sound textures, drones, chrashing noise, digitalia, field recordings, turntables, static electric atmospheres, samplers sine waves and location recordings, all used in free improvisation to create fragmented, eclectic and relentless yet focused and massive collages. a-sia might remind you of mixture between the hi-speed electronics of belgian irregularities scratch pet land and the microsound-turntablism like otomo yoshihide or martin ttreault, b-sia begins like pop defined by the tochnit aleph crew, but slowly between layers of distortions there rise sweet, fenneszian melody as if they were re-arranged by rudolf e.ber.

lasse marhaug: electronics
nils henrik asheim: organ

lasse marhaug and nils henrik asheim started their collaboration in 2004 at the all ears festival in oslo, norway. this turned out as a fruitful meeting between two musicians of very different backgrounds. marhaug's feedback to asheim's organ sounds in the oslo concert started to reflect how the work was to develop. asheim is working with half-stops and subtle playing techniques that create multiple layers of sound with a vibrating or fluctuating character, as well as with the power of the full organ. marhaug's tools belong to the world of sine wave oscillators and noise generators. the aim was to set a sonic frame into which they could both gradually tune.

the two musicians met again in june 2006 just before oslo cathedral (which contains asheim's favourite instrument) closed down for a few years of renovation work. one day of soundcheck and musical work and one night of recording produced an improvised flow of one hour, afterwards structured into five tracks.

the recording was made in a live setup on the organ loft. nils henrik asheim was sitting at the organ console and lasse marhaug right behind, playing his electronics through a loudspeaker system in order to make the electronics and the acoustic organ sound blend as close to each other as possible. sound engineer thomas hukkelberg used two custom-built condenser mics for the organ, two shure ksm 44 for the electronics and two neumann u87 by the altar for the ambience. he used a millennia media hv-3 preamp and an apogee ad-16x converter. the recordings were made at night to avoid unwanted ambient city sounds. the final mix was made by marhaug in january 2007.

biographies of the artists:

lasse marhaug (b. 1974) has since the early 90s been one of the most active artists in the so-called norwegian noise scene. as a performer and composer he has contributed to well over 200 cd, vinyl and cassette releases over the years, as well as extensive touring and performing live in europe, asia and america. in addition to his solo work, marhaug plays regularly in projects jazkamer, nash kontroll, del and testicle hazard. past projects and bands include origami replika and lasse marhaug band. he has collaborated with several artists in the noise, improv, jazz, rock and extreme metal fields, as well as working with music for theatre, dance, installations and video.

composer nils henrik asheim (b.1960) combines his work with a career as a performer, as well as regularly collaborating with other artists on projects integrating spatial and theatrical elements. asheim started out as a pupil of olav anton thommessen and made his début as a composer at the early age of fifteen. in 1978 he was awarded the ebu rostrum prize for his work ensemblemusikk for 5. he subsequently went on to study organ and composing at the norwegian academy of music and the sweelinck conservatory in amsterdam.

from about the year 2000 onwards asheim’s music displays a stronger focus on texture and the physical and tactile qualities of sound. his music presents parallel temporal proportions; asheim works with layers of closeness and distance. recurring material undergoes variation, thereby creating a form that appears open and self-generating. in the course of this same period asheim makes his mark as a performer with his free-improvisation disc 16 pieces for organ and its sequel 19.03.04, oslo cathedral, and a collaboration with soprano anne-lise berntsen resulting in the recordings engleskyts and kom regn. asheim also appears as a pianist in various projects.

nils henrik asheim has written several chamber music pieces including vannspeil, navigo, chase, nicht and broken line; his output for orchestra includes the works speil, turba , wind songs and degrees of white. he has also written a number of large-scale sacred works. since 1991 asheim has lived in stavanger where he is active as a composer, performer and organizer, and not least as the principal initiator of the founding of tou scene, an alternative centre for contemporary arts.

november 2006 release from rosy parlane - i’ve been eagerly awaiting this moment for many years now as rosy’s first album “iris” has become something of a high watermark in contemporary digital-music circles, and is among my favorite albums of the last 5-odd years - he most certainly does not disappoint with this opus...

photography & design: jon wozencroft

rosy parlane [nz]'s previous album for touch, 'iris' [2004] was hailed as a masterpiece by the red hot chilli peppers guitarist, john frusciante, who wrote: "...it’s such an incredible, beautiful energy inside of it that to me, it sounds like listening to a great pop record or a great rock record or a great classical record or whatever."

jim haynes in the wire wrote: "jon wozencroft's impeccable photography and design packages rosy parlane's 'iris' inside a predominantly blue package, inextricably linking the music to the emotional resonance of the colour... he flushes his soundfields with cascades of digital fragments which he separates into two distinct compositional categories. on the one hand, parlane stretches sounds from guitar, piano and organ into unrecognisable drones that swell into dense layerings, every once in a while coalescing into fluttering half-melodies. on the other, he emphasises the textural qualities of those digital fragments, simulating the natural acoustics of ice crackling from trees in winter or the gentle patter of rain on a windowsill. when fusing these together by placing the textures against the backdrop of the drone, parlane effectively builds pointillist sound environments with a profoundly human melancholia."

with 'jessamine', rosy develops these themes, and continues to incorporate new musical elements from unconventional as well as orchestral instrumentation. to him, everything is an instrument: from household objects to nature sounds, thus placing him firmly at the centre of the avant-garde. but it is the human element, as with all touch artists, which gives his work such a distinctive sound. ranging from ambient to noise, he gives full rein to textures of living; to start, languid and mournful; later harsh and assertive.

'jessamine' is a magnificent follow-up to a classic touch debut.

lasse marhaugspaghetti western rainbow” compact disc

  • spaghetti western rainbow (redux)
  • i quattro dell’apoclalisse oro hondo
  • the endless gundown
note: this is a proper, replicated cd-edition, re-issuing this now-classic lasse marhaug session with bonus materials (including a piece done in something of a mail-collaboration with... myself... late last year)

here’s the blurb i originally wrote regarding the cd-r edition:

here’s a nice edition of a september 2004 wnur-fm radio set from norway’s leading bringer of doom, lasse marhaug. lasse completists (of which there are many, certainly enough to justify a larger pressing of this than 50) will want to note that this is, as far as i can tell, the first solo live marhaug release (there have been a few jazzkammer live things, notably the one w/merzbow recorded @ a molde a few years back). taking a step back from recent brutal/all-sound ventures, lasse here dips into a collection of found-sounds and fx, mish-mashing them this way and that, rendering what could be considered a “musical” piece (esp. given the context). i haven’t had this fun listening to what is ostensibly a “noise” record since the merzbow/cock espmusic for man with no name” 7” on fusetron (which shares a similar love for leone/morricone-lineage twang). more proof that mr. marhaug is and continues to be one of the most vital voices in contemporary sound ...
utech press release...
artist: lasse marhaug
title: spaghetti western rainbow
format: cd
edition: 1000
length: 55'
trx: 4
catalogue number: urcd002
released: october 21, 2006
recorded:
chicago / boston / bergen / oslo.
final mix > oslo > june 6, 2006.

hailing from the land of the rising snow, lasse marhaug has become one of the most commanding and respected sound artists in norway. as a musician and composer he has contributed to cd, vinyl and cassette releases for labels throughout europe, asia and america. aside from solo work, marhaug contributes to several ensembles including nash kontroll (ideal) and a large jazkamer unit (smalltown supernoise) with black metal legends enslaved. having collaborated with artists from varying fields of musik (sunn o))), aaron dilloway and maja ratkje) marhaug's reach extends into musik for theatre, installations and video.

a salvo to ennio morricone, spaghetti western rainbow stands testament to the italian composer's enduring influence. morricone collaborator sergio leone established the spaghetti western genre in 1964 with a fistful of dollars. the director used morricone again to score the remaining two films in his three-part account of greed and violence (for a few dollars more and the good, the bad and the ugly.) leone's critics were struck by his brutal depiction of an unromantic west, but his singular style, camera angles and extension of time made his work different from any western that had come before. lasse marhaug exacts leone's slow, beautiful power and love for expanse with shades of morricone's subtle witchery to create what will inevitably be considered one of his masterworks. harsh, dry passages blend with drifting soundscapes, bird calls and an asseverate guitar figure that promotes an invigorating context for film musik.

issued on utech records [001] as a micro pressing of 100 cdr copies in the winter of 2004. lasse marhuag first performed this music as an improvised laptop work for chicago radio station wnur. this edition finds the original piece remastered and divided into two tracks that open and close the album. two unreleased pieces recorded in boston, bergen and oslo have been added as bonus tracks. various source material contributed by keith fullerton whitman. artwork inspired by the film "the great silence."

audio warfare and crowd control studies. edited by alku.

less-lethal, vol. 1
alku 63. various artists. 5" compact disc. 11 tracks. 16-page booklet. total program length 51:06

a compilation cd about sound-based nonlethal weaponry featuring tracks by carlos giffoni, dave phillips, francisco lópez, gæoudjiparl van den dobbelsteen, justice yeldham, lasse marhaug, mark fell, powerbooks for peace, torturing nurse, weasel walter and zbigniew karkowski.

keywords: less-lethal, nonlethal, torture, warfare, noise, crowd control, psychoacoustics.

less-lethal, vol. 1 is a sarcastic approach to the use of commercially available music in the military context (see waco, noriega, etc.) it includes a 16-page booklet with an essay by german researcher paul paulun about nonlethal force and its historical relationship with sound and music.

the foundations for this project were laid around 1999, with a long period of research into the equally blurry and fascinating fields of nonlethal weapons (also known as less-lethal weapons) and the behavioral sciences. over the course of this time, we found that one of the most interesting aspects of this phenomenon – full of mythology and speculation – was the use of commercially available music in the context of armed conflict, torture and crowd control. particularly the sheer lack of imagination on the part of military experts who resort to the use of pop music as a weapon, by playing it back for painfully long periods of time at very high volumes.

the direct relationship between sound and behavior has been documented outside the military over the centuries, from the musical treatment of mental patients in the ottoman empire to muzak's stimulus progression theory. with this in mind, it was the psyop’s complete lack of research which provided an excellent starting point for a challenging musical exercise. eleven artists were invited to contribute a sound piece that could be used as a weapon in an armed conflict.

the resulting tracks approach the subject matter in radically different ways. amplitude, duration and repetition may indeed constitute key elements of discomfort, but these tracks all go well beyond that. exploring dynamics and frequency range, structure, latent content, or various aspects from the realm of psychoacoustics, these pieces pose a stimulating (and less lethal) alternative to the average weaponized aor.

spring 2007 compilation of “idiosyncratic” music curated by yannick franck... includes music by a pretty damn excellent selection of contemporary drone/repetition practitioners ranging from the minimalist swell of charlemagne palestine to the munged roar of lasse marhaug & jon hegre’s jazkamer to steffen basho-junghan’s ringing steel-string figures...

just about everything is exclusive to this reasonably priced and quite lovely set (featuring tatiana klejniak’s scribbled-out paintings...) with a nice blend of darker & lighter tonalities. something for every fan of long-form sound. properly chilled.

various artists : idioscapes 2007
digipack / 1000 copies

“the idea was to ask some of our favourite sound artists to take part in a compilation... and, to our surprise, they accepted. the only concept was that they had to provide a specific / particular / idiosyncratic piece. qualified as a “drone paradise” by lasse marhaug (of jazkamer), the result is a fine and coherent whole, full of extended textures, contrasted acoustic surfaces, subtle and strong. idioscapes contains 70 minutes of authentic acoustic researches, with glitches, loops, noises, deep and glittering textures, subliminal frequences and narrative inserts, punctured with sensible musical moments. idiosyncratics is honoured to present these sound masters on idioscapes. infinite thanks to all of them.” y.f.

may 2003 double dream date with a good chunk of the more ‘relevant’ akts in contempo-tronica taking on one of mr. akita’s better ‘digital age’ efforts. frighteningly high signal-to-noise-to-signal ratio when pitted against other recent all-star remix efforts. very odd lineup given the source material (bola?) but a substantial work transcending mere remix-compilation status...
important press release...
artists were asked to use merzbow's album amlux (imprec-02) as an instrument in an original composition, rather than to perform the conventional remix. we hoped that this would allow the artist to flourish with greater creative freedom and a less restrictive context. we didn't want to fit this project into any sub-genre of music. we wanted it to simply exist. perhaps the beat oriented tracks, record scratching and vocals will annoy some noise purists, and perhaps the noisy sound collages will irritate others, but hopefully this collection of tracks from some of the best electronic artists working today will enlighten the listener. music is sound and sound is everywhere, regardless of classification.

qpop cd040
cd in digifile

…a thousand girls, a thousand thrills, a million ways to spend your time when we get back, i'll drop the line…

cd compilation “million ways to spend your time” is dedicated to 5th birthday of ukrainian label quasi pop. it represents new & rare works works by label mates and exclusive tracks from quasi pop's friends from different countries:

black to comm — fantastic deep gentle track made with vinyl loops, sounds like “old kraut-drone-psychedelic stuff”. this project runs by dekorder label owner marc richter from hamburg, germany.

continental fruit is the member of bergen's experimental scene, but he hasn't got huge discography yet. continental fruit have been released only 7" vinyl on smalltown supersound, but we got really rare new track from him!

peel off the bass — our favourite ukrainian rock group recorded especially for this cd first track (in romantic garage kraut-style) for the last few years.

monofilament — the first recorded track after 10 years break by this experimental duo from bergen, norway. monofilament are: andreas brandal & espen sommer-eide (phonophani, alog). crazy tape manipulations!

tv pow — deep environmental piece from this chicago-based free-improv trio. tw pow are well-known artists after their successful releases on labels such as box media, bottrop, erstwhile, staalplaat & gentle giant.

lasse marhaug — surely, the main man of norwegian noise. lasse is an active solo-artist, also he is a half of outstanding duo jazkamer. besides he owns the label, working as designer and takes part in projects origami republica and del. here he presents psychedelic-noise-collage stuff.

andrey kiritchenko — quiet electro-acoustic piece with beautiful guitar drones and overtones. probably, andrey is the most prolific & successful ukrainian electronic/experimental artist. he is also the core founder of experimental ukrainian label nexsound.

origami epileptika — norwegian multi-culture, cross-genre art-unit origami (replika, republika etc). one of his faces is weird psycho-country drone composition which is represented here.

8rolek — cracking and swinging electronic record by one of the leading artists from great polish label mik music.

jorgen knudsen — inexhaustible norwegian inventor, dreamer and experimentalist recorded for our release congratulant ecologic froggy jazz. pop, noise & circus-maximus!

olivier lamm — “j-pop style” song from one of the leading and most interesting artists from french super avant-pop label active suspension.

the complainer — another powerful beat-based outfit from poland runs by wojtek kucharczyk, he is also the main force of mik music label.

andreas brandal — “analogue wizard” and our good friend from norway presented us probably the loudest, most abrasive and intensive track on the compilation. pretty good record in “old good industrial style”.

alexey petrov — he is the author of this minimalistic, but great-sounding piece for laptop and 2 samples. he is most likely our favorite electronic artist for the moment. actually, he is one of the most talented young audio experimentalists from ukraine.

batcheeba — the newest composition from very talented singer/songwriter janne waage berset from bergen, norway.

charsky — the new and exclusive song from mysterious & charismatic ex-leader of the cult ukrainian group nekraina.

biblioteka prospero — single-minded but spontaneous live improvisation for saxophone, vintage soviet synth, prepared piano and bass. also you can hear the short «festive» text in russian.

great thanks a lot for all contributors!
this cd comes in high-quality digifile with nice “sexy jazzy gdr” style.

august 2009 release ; just wow ...

possibly the penultimate release in a series of locked-groove releases instigated by rrronemil beaulieaulessard back in 1993 with the “rrr-100” 7” single record (feat. 50 locks per side by folks like jim o’rourke, idea fire company, borbetomagus, skullflower, chop shop, new blockaders, et.al) then again in 1998 with the “rrr-500” lp (250 on each side by ... one a piece by pretty much a who’s who of late-90s experimental sound) ...

and now, 11 years later, we get the next logical evolutive step ; 1000 locked grooves (500 per side !!!) ; 50 each by 20 artists picked by rrron based on the following algorithm ::

this time i decided to focus on only 20 artists and give them plenty of room to stretch out - really glad i did because this one is much more solid than the other two, noisewise

before i invited the artists, i had devised a simple formula for myself
50/50 = noise/electronic (experimental)
50/50 = new/old school
50/50 = usa/intn'l
50/50 = people i always work with/people i've never worked with

the unsung genius / hero here is undoubtedly aardvark mastering’s paul brekus, who must have spent countless man-hours getting the metal mothers cut just right (i can only imagine the number of time he got halfway through cutting a side before making a single mistake & having to start over from scratch !!!) ... despite the fallout from such a thing a thing (i.e. the deluge of blackened noise tapes & cdr’s i’m going to be handed at gigs over the next year or so comprised of “prurient loops” will undoubtedly be bafffling) the quality & attention to detail put forth by just about everyone is seriously impressive ... easily on the records of the year thusfar & a testament to the staying power & endless, mutating possibilities of the vinyl lp record ...

highest recommendation !!!

the sound projector (uk) #tsp 12 mag

the sound projector 12th issue 2004” magazine

  • articles & interviews with those mentioned below
  • hundreds of record reviews
the sound projector is a steam-powered tank rumbling through the suburbs in the dead of night, hell-bent on sorting all this u-bahn musical activity STRAIGHT. edited, laid out, designed, printed, and almost entirely written by one ed pinsent, a +/- 150~ page issue comes out once a year... the whole thing’s chock with pure information laid out in a practical manner, very much a joy to behold (the enthusiasm mr.p shares for the subject in question comes across in droves). highly recommended for those of you on the rise within the experimental underground ranks and/or the aging denizen who (like me) pines for the era of fanzines (don’t you spend enough damn time in front of your computer screen as it is? i hear paper’s making a comeback).

each issue is divided into a series of themed review columns with titles like “in the art gallery” (modern composition), “atoms of pure noise” (noise), “cakehole activity” (rap and hip-hop), “the crackling esther” (electronica), “the discurator's den” (comps), “the droning ones” (drones), “environmental and documentary recordings” (self-explanatory), “mutating into a microchip” (computer and laptop music), “tape maschines maken” (manipulations of a greasy source sound), “free jazz” , “the gorgeous harmonic”, etc...

as you can gather from that list this comes the closest in concept to exactly what i’m trying to do with this shop here... to simply document and cherry-pick the interesting bits non-denominationally from the trail-vapors of music-at-large. we all need to chip in and buy this guy a cake, the best way for you to contribute would be to simply buy an issue here...
