kirsten mccord first passed before our eyes and ears as a guest cellist, in performance with azalia snail. soothing, strange and classically alien, her playing was a lovely addition to the evening’s music.
we next heard from her regarding a combo of some sort that she had assembled with various characters from the sound @ one universe. the catfish was involved, as was keith connolly, and even david nuss’s name was bandied about. there were rumors that we’d be hearing a tape of this material, but that has thus far proved to be false.
when this new york-based multi-instrumentalist actually sent a tape, it was of the music you now hold in yr hands. a very difficult to peg mix of vocal-less sounds, textures and gestures, with equal debts to the original philip glass ensemble, early omd, and the glass harmonica compositions of benjamin franklin. we couldn’t have been more surprised if you stuck some turkey bones up our collective ass!
anyway, when you get a tape like this, there’s really only one thing to do: put it the fuck out. so that’s what happened. and whatever else comes down the pike, here are five examples of ms. mccord standing alone in the free grass, shaking a miniature world loose from her hair, bit by bloody bit.
1) “mother turpentine” the original cabaret voltaire’s take on kraut rock, taken from a little can and simmered on a summertime stove.
2) “walkabout” roll over stockhausen and tell peter weir the news. rolling away from the quiet pock of bullets into fields of gentle strings.
3) “loose pants take shape” echoes of karma arrayed in the wake of jacques tati, whose moves have never bee fully explicable outside of real café society.
4) “swain in the shadow of maurice” coco’s nanny pedals a bicycle past all the other nannies, trailing cheeb smoke and hints of sperm toxins. what wind resistance!
5) “stan laurel death rictus” after the robots have gone home and all that’s left to do is clean up their mess, the ghosts of insects float on the breeze. loving.
with the visions of a better (stricter) tomorrow, kirsten mccord herewith allows us the opportunity to advance our own causes into the softness of the future’s folds. where a rumble was, it is no longer. not that kind of rumble anyway. enjoy yrself. be patient. life is short. art is long.
