may 2010 release ; ... only a year after the “collection” session in june 1981, the merzbow duo changed gears entirely, focusing on the harsh, grating textures & gain-baths that we all associate with the name with today ...

by now masami has switched over to “drums, distorted drums, rhythm box, tapes, noise etc” and kiyoshi “organ, violin, feedback microphone etc” ; the fidelity has switched from clean & detail-oriented to the classic harsh noise “tape-blur” ... the drum machine bits (listen to the sound-sample) are especially ace, recalling miles’ “electric” era use of them more for texture than rhythm ...

may 2010 release ; ... continuing on in the june 16th, 1981 session, here masami goes to town on “tapes, drums, percussions, synare-3, prepared guitar, ring modulator etc” along with kiyoshi on “piano, flute etc” ... the pacing is definitely influenced by 60s/70s euro-improv, with both players sticking to a single instrument per take (masami’s expert wrangling of the synare-3 drum synth is particularly nice - listen to the sound-sample for a taste) ...

may 2010 release ; first in this spring 2010 series reissuing crucial early recordings from masami akita & kiyoshi mizutani’s merzbow ...

... over the last few decades, it’s been easy to think of merzbow as masami’s solo “wall of noise” project, but that would be completely disregarding the unit’s humble beginnings as an fmp / incus-style free-improv unit, dealing in amm / mev-leaning comminglings of “extended technique” improvation, electronic augmentations and “found” sound (i.e. radios, tapes) ...

here’s the first half of a session recorded on june 16th, 1981, featuring masami on “tapes, prepared guitar, ring modulator, noise etc” & kiyoshi on “piano, violin, harmonica, guitar etc” ; three takes with mizutani’s piano & akita’s telemetry-noises dominating the first, a raucous & dareisay “bluesy” gut-bucket guitar & harmonica blaster, as the second, and a superb dragging wail of scraped strings & heavy ring-modulator overtones as the third ...

needless to say, this is all incredible, eye-opening stuff, issued here for the first time since the original, “private” cassette versions on masami’s lowest music & arts back in 1982 ... acquire all four of these, post-haste ...
