alan licht / loren mazzacane connorshoffman estates” long playing record

  • block that nixon
  • sad at times
  • wisdom day

  • peace scare
  • turner's murder
  • and everyone 'neath their vine and fig tree shall live in peace and unafraid
november 1998 release; not a selection of guitar duets/duels between alan licht & loren mazzacane connors, but a fully fleshed-out ensemble free-improv record with contributions from kevin drumm, jeb bishop, ken vandermark, jim o’rourke, rob mazurek, michael colligan, josh abrams, and darin gray ...
drag city press release...
o'rourke decided to pair up loren with alan licht. a full day of improvising was recorded, selected, and then arrangements were later added by o'rourke in a sort of gil evans / miles davis move, or more appropriately teo macero meets mazza-licht.

organized like a continuum of music that brings new meaning to 'suite' (or at the very least, a flexible new spelling), the record is at once a psychedelic brew of fuzzed-out free jazz and howling blues that at times will make your head spin. the truly out and shout nature of the music that day took everyone by surprise, and it'll be no surprise when it takes you too. as in 'o-u-t'. comparisons: from the free jazz of pharaoh sanders and bill dixon to the early 70s electric space of miles davis' 'he loved him madly,' to the molasses blues of connors' classics like in pittsburgh.

this record has the distinction of sounding distinctly unlike any of these recordings.

kevin drumm / daniel menchegauntlet” compact disc

  • gauntlet (28:47)
click the play button to hear an excerpt of "gauntlet"
long-awaited new material from kevin drumm, a single piece jointly composed with prolific northwest noise/tribal-percussion producer daniel menche...

gauntlet” starts off with a lone bit of post-hardcore guitar riffing, then builds slowly via concurrent layers of drum-kit/cymbal splash & further direct-pedal guitar tones... before of course heating up into an impressive shitstorm of hundreds of layers of said ingredients, laying out halfway through into a gorgeous void of subterranean electronics & variable-tempo gating, finally conking out into a few minute of kevin’s trademark doepfer comparator/slew chop...

this is miles away from each composer’s solo work... closer to the sound of a coupla 80s sst records being fed simultaneously through some sort of sentient auto-composition framework... some of the direct-to-4-track-mic-input guitar tones remind me of spanish black metal, but otherwise this is on its own path entirely. nothing short of totally impressive, and due to the short-sharp-shock of it; something that doesn’t overstay its welcome. highly recommended.

kevin drumm & daniel menche: gauntlet cd

release date: 24.07.2007

kevin drumm: guitar and noise
daniel menche: organ and noise

recorded fall of 2006 in chicago at uggae’s porta-toilet studio. mixed and mastered at stereophonic mastering in portland, oregon.

one organ, one guitar, several fuzz boxes and two highly regarded purveyors of american extreme sonics are the savoury ingredients that created gauntlet. building on menche’s aural low end physicality and drumm’s exacting attention to high frequency detail - the aptly titled ‘gauntlet’ is sizzling, scorching slab of essential audio. heavy in iron and protein. a lean cut indeed, no fat included.

kevin drummsheer hellish miasma” compact disc

  • cloudy (5:18)

remastered version of what many consider to be kevin drumm’s defining album; 2002’s “sheer hellish miasma.”

markus schmickler has done a bang-up/sympathetic job on the frequency-range aspect/impact, greg kelley’s contribution to the album’s apex “the inferno” now credited.

with all that’s happened in music in the intervening years this still sounds like a flock of mutagen-addled locusts organizing a dawn raid on all that is sacred... if anything; the sonic power of this music has grown logarithmically, threatening to break out of the 1/0 stream that binds it to the compact disc itself and expand into some un-knowable form.

in my mind this is one of the defining moments in the school of electro-acoustic noise “composition” that enjoys so much (if still marginal) success these days; go back to the blueprint here and see how little has changed, and in fact how much regression has taken place. highly recommended.

kevin drumm: sheer hellish miasma cd

release date: 12.03.2007

total time: 66:22

originally released 2002

utilising guitar, tapes, mics, pedals, analogue synthesizer and some computer assistance drumm has concocted a sonic beast. in doing so one is taken on an intense journey of storming feedback, open audio onslaught and somewhat savaged sonics. the extreme end of anarchic electronics and possibly a hint of musical violence is present throughout the much of the disc. an essential release capturing drumm at his most ferocious and most inventive. it’s an exhilarating, visceral test of endurance brimming with demonic humor and a tour of drumm’s ever-expanding sonic palette.

for seasoned noise veterans, sheer hellish miasma offers a bracing soundscape filled with exquisitely abrasive textures and more than enough hidden detail to warrant repeated listening – a distinct voice in the increasingly same-sounding world of abstract electronic noise. for everyone else, drumm’s journey through the noisy underworld is likely to inspire fear or, in an optimistic case, fearful admiration. this reissue comes with an additional track, 'impotent hummer', taken from the same period. a 13 minute drone piece which draws the listener into the forthcoming blizzard.

revised artwork by stephen o’malley.
re-mastered at piethopraxis, köln, december 2006.

mimeo / john tilburythe hands of caravaggio” compact disc

  • the hands of caravaggio (49:24)
erstwhile press release...
keith rowe: guitar, electronics

phil durrant: software granular samplers and treatments
thomas lehn: analogue synthesizer
kaffe matthews: computer
jérôme noetinger: electroacoustic devices
gert-jan prins: electronics, fm modulations, radio

john tilbury: piano

mimeo, the music in movement electronic orchestra, is a band composed of twelve of europe's premier electronics improvisers. due both to logistical and financial constraints, they have only performed together a handful of times since the establishment of the current lineup in 1998.

after the remarkable success of their epic, 24-hour long performance in vand'ouevre in may of 2000, the band did not assemble again until almost a year later in bologna, for the angelica festival (thanks to festival organizer massimo simonini). the concert was a singular one, as mimeo was joined by the noted pianist john tilbury, nonpareil feldman interpreter and longstanding member of amm. the performance was built around a concerto for piano and electronic orchestra, titled the hands of caravaggio and loosely inspired by the caravaggio painting the taking of christ, as interpreted by keith rowe.

the piece begins with a low test-tone drone from cor fuhler, working inside the piano, followed by tilbury's entrance a few minutes later. next, jérôme noetinger sets off a flare, signaling the introduction of the electronics. the accumulation of electronics gradually reaches critical mass, at times obscuring the piano altogether. but tilbury is never completely hidden for long; space opens, and the piano emerges. as the piece evolves, the musicians discover a more delicate counterbalance to work within, which ultimately dissipates into silence.

liner notes for this release can be found on the 021 catalog page on the erstwhile web site. these include an essay by michael graubart on the history of the concerto and the hands of caravaggio's place within the tradition, as well as notes from some of the musicians involved, including rowe and tilbury. the stylistic range of the music is echoed in the artwork, which intertwines the original caravaggio, a painting and a graphic score by rowe, and original work from erstwhile designer friederike paetzold.

kevin drumm: guitar and electronics
martin tétreault: turntables

chicago-based kevin drumm (guitar, electronics) and montreal-based martin tétreault (turntables) traveled in separate musical circles, each unaware of the other's work, until a chicago-based organization, lampo, booked tétreault for a concert with drumm and the ubiquitous jim o'rourke in september of 1999. while tétreault was in chicago, he and drumm spent some time in the studio, and this cd contains the results, as recorded by tv pow's todd carter.

drumm, best known for his two superb solo records on perdition plastics, and tétreault, best known for his collaborative series of discs on ambiances magnetiques with the likes of otomo yoshihide and ikue mori, meld their techniques seamlessly to form a thoroughly integrated record. while both musicians are more than capable of playing solo sets filled with compelling ideas from beginning to end, here both seem to make a conscious effort to subsume their identities in order to create a greater work.

... in parallel to panasonic’s “kesto” 4-disc/album set from a few years back, the duo of john wiese and corydon ronnau here unleash, simultaneously, four separate albumsworth of music by their long-running sissy spacek group, featuring guest spots & remix-work from something of a who’s who of contemporary sound (tom recchion, kevin drumm, joseph hammer, damion romero, greg kelley, andy ortmann, smegma’s oblivia, mitchell brown, david scott stone, etc... )

each disc has it’s own feel / tempo ; the first consists of very short / dense blasts of (mainly) harsh noise & busy/active configurations ; the second is all quieter / sparser free improv ; the third two obnoxious extended feedback-worship freakouts ; and the fourth two performances of a through-composed piece of john’s ...

the thing is rife with head-scratchingly odd moments (kevin drumm’s bedroom metal-hero guitar tactics coming scarily close to mick barr’s solo work - listen to the sound-sample) but never stays in one place for all too long (save for the third disc, perhaps) ... highly recommended !!!

sissy spacek
california ax 4xcd
helicopter, h 50

up to this point sissy spacek have only released 4 proper albums, all of which could probably be squeezed together onto one cd. what we have in this release is 4 new full length albums recorded throughout 2007.

tinsel dripping ink (disk 1) is 26 tracks in 45 minutes covering all territory from grindcore, noise, electro-acoustic improv, musique concrete, noisecore, and electronics. it's primarily made up of new work, but also roots through the cutting floor for the best bits that didn't make it onto previous efforts for one reason or another, with a few tracks dating as far back as 1998.

police (disk 2) is 11 tracks in 40 minutes of electro-acoustic improv with girls on drums.

abreq ad habra (disk 3) gets it's title from an arabic phrase pre-dating "abracadabra" that translates "hurl a lightning bolt even unto death" which we'll choose to misread as "hurl an even lightning bolt until death." this disc contains the most raw recordings sissy spacek have ever released, the first being a 40 minute inferno recorded on kxlu and the second from a 20 minute live set in 2002 in st. louis.

13-tet los angeles (disk 4) is a live document of a 13 piece lineup that performed two sets at the smell in los angeles in december 2007 and is also the first live performance of a score by john wiese.

there are also many contributors to this set aside from original members of john wiese and corydon ronnau: mitchell brown, sarah cake, kevin drumm, gerritt, kate hall (mika miko), joseph hammer (solid eye), aaron hemphill (liars, skull sküll), jesse jackson (flaspar), greg kelley (nmperign), tim koh (white magic, ariel pink), danny mcclain (grand ulena), giles miller, oblivia (smegma), andy ortmann (panicsville), sam ott (the fucking angels), tom recchion (airway, lafms), damion romero (speculum fight), jarrett silberman (skull sküll, young people), dean spunt (no age), david scott stone (melvins, get hustle), and shannon walter (16 bitch pileup).

november 2007 release; the debut full-length from the duo of dom “prurient” fernow & kevin drumm - previously available for about a nanosecond on cassette, now in a slightly larger pressing on disc...

alternating between an almost hafler-trio-ian selection of instrumental/episodic mood-pieces and (dare i say it) sections recalling robert ashley’soperas(dom, voice pitched down, recites the “libretto” below over kevin’s static wave-field...), this is arguably the first text-sound piece in dom’s oeuvre (at the very least; the first in which his text is readily intelligible). kevin’s contributions range from floating sine-wave combinations and considerably more abrasive/rectified sections of plundered salon music, analogue synth patterns, and slowly mutating chord-shapes...

evocative stuff; certainly not for the weak-of-constitution...

march 2009 ; surprise repress of this best-of-2008 title !!!

may 2008 release ; unbelievable ... suddenly, with little warning, dom “prurient” fernow here drops kevin drumm’s first solo full-length since 2002’s “sheer hellish miasma” on his hospital productions imprint ...

several years in the making (i remember seeing mentions of this in hospital ads over 2 years ago !!!), “imperial distortion” is, without a doubt, kevin’s masterwork ; six extended takes on statis-heavy drone-sound, high dread-quotient w/the impeccably organized sound-fields positively distended w/woofer-rattling low-end ... claustrophobic music w/no means of escape ; even if there are (brief) snatches of friendlier tonalities littering the sheer morass (listen to the sound-sample) ...

i make my love for kevin & his increasingly sporadic work known all throughout this site ; he’s one of my all-time favorite musicians & the mere existence of this well thought-out & finally tangible work is cause celebre for just about everyone who shops here. i give this my highest recommendation !!!
hospital productions press release...

what does a person do when faced with a work like imperial distortion? there are rare moments in an artist's work where they reveal a greater truth. kevin drumm has already made such a statement with his last major solo work, 2002's sheer hellish miasma. where that record took noise music to a new level of near-impenetrable exactitude, imperial distortion is an altogether different beast.

beauty as an aesthetic can be as terrifying as horror, desire unfulfilled, romance that lingers and never goes away, no matter how disappointing. a preoccupation with death can be the only result. on this extended long-form release, kevin drumm comes face to face with minimal drone music and confronts the genre by providing one of its absolute pinnacles at the forefront; movement. drone music at its most concentrated and ably performed has build and depth in its tones. although there might be the illusion of stasis, the opposite is true.

from the opening 20-minute track 'guillain-barre,' the mood of the album is laid clear. the arrangements are shadowy layers of soundtrack-like tones not entirely unlike the work that popul vuh provided for herzog's films. by track two, 'more blood and guts,' with its ominous bell tones, it becomes apparent that there is a true nothing that's associated with these sounds, other than the mood-inducing hypnosis and the feeling of drowning, yet having no ability to fight the slow pull.

the middle portion of the record is 'snow,' which was released as a limited cassette last year on hospital productions. this material was a teaser for the full album imperial distortion. the tracks have an almost ballad-esque sense of elegance, using tone and frequency as melodic portals to nowhere. the sustain in the piece suggests a weight while remaining alarmingly pleasant to the ears. the tension suggests an anxiety that never truly dies. the alarm comes from the juxtaposition of tones and mood.

while the tones may sound gorgeous in their purity, the mood implies a profound sense of unease and perhaps an acceptance of the inevitability of existential dilemma. this point is most thoroughly evidenced by the albums closer, 'we all get it in the end.' while the piece starts out with lullaby ease, a few minutes in, an equally severe dark drone eclipses the light and the night takes over. here in the enveloped sounds, the clouds pass over the moonlight creating a spectral dark that is unforgettable in its intensity.

to answer the initial question of imperial distortion, this is a work that commands intellectual and emotional commitment on the levels of the greatest works to come from this genre. kevin drumm has accomplished that rare balance to create a masterwork that no one has yet to come close to in this era. your best bet is to surrender.

odd minimal concrète / drone / folk lp widely surmised to be the work of kevin drumm ...

i’ve always felt this was an under-rated record (compared to how much people were fawning over the nuno canavarro & ray russell moikai discs at the time) - there’s a great sense of space at play here; the clock-mechanism sounds (regular/repeating clicks and whirrs) that run through the first piece are somewhat reminiscent of nurse with wound, the digitally-treated folk guitar licks that permeate the second aren’t that far removed from fennesz’ “plays” ep ...

a careful and considered record; much more than a mere footnote in kevin’s substantial discography ...
moikai press release...
triangles offers you more of the powerbook electronics sounds we're all digging on so much, and from speaking comparatively from the field as it stands today, triangles sounds quite good, really amazing, in fact.

despite falling into the, dammit, start saying it -- 'melancholy electronics,' hole that you clearly need filled, triangles stands on it's own. need more? try this -- triangles occupies the space between powerbook extrapolations (quite reminiscent of the sole person in america who can do anything well at all on them silicon bastards, wink wink!), and middle 70's italian melancholy electronics (yes, they did it first again, damn them!), like alvin curran or franco battiato. it hints at robert ashley's automatic writing and david behrman’s on the other ocean. a little bit anyways. but no matter what you think triangles sounds like, it's definitely a 'trip,' as the kids on acid say. yeah, triangles will definitely keep those types busy for awhile.

meanwhile, critics will find it shocking easy to find angles and write reviews for triangles, so expect much punning geometry in our near pulp future. but what of you, the listener? you can throw this disc on (after examining the cover graphics by triangles and swedish artist / soundmonger extraordinaire leif elgrenn) and find some points of your own. who knows? maybe you'll say, triangles -- a hodgepodge of bleeps, scrapes, white noise, motor-like sounds, schmaltzy organ drones, sluggish acoustic guitar strumming, a morose piano note or two, an apoplectic fit of crunching and crackling and a clipped voice occasionally muttering something.

triangles use guitars (both electric and acoustic), piano, organ, pzm scrape and scratch as well as analog synthesizer and other modern electronic music producing equipment. cold at times, serene at others, spacey, maybe gloomy for a few moments -- you can throw harsh in there too. all that in just 38 minutes.

a live recording of an april 2000 duo meeting in tokyo between the unlikely pairing of guitarists taku sugimoto (heading from straight improv & noise-psych into increasing reductionism) and kevin drumm (heading from sparse pointillism into sheer full-bore noise and static drones.)

fans of contemporary drumm will undoubtedly scratch their heads at the seeming lack of “jams/z” within, fans of eai ala the erstwhile label will see this as a shining example of what the two were capable of back in the halcyon days ...

weirdo compilation featuring a fairly wide array of contemporary sound-practitioners as forced into communal music-making practice by the folks over at alku... wonder to the concept of a lópez/drumm collaboration, thrill to the sonics of several unlikely combinations...

10 citas a ciegas
10 blind dates
(alku, 17)

‘when the two have run each other through, the path to your destiny will open’(excerpt from ‘resident evil’ for nintendo game cube, 2002).

yops!
this is anna and roc from barcelona.
we reach you cause we'd like to invite you to take part in one of our nextalku projects.

alku's new compilation is called "x + y = xy".
it is a different approach to collaborations/splits, based on the idea of "blind dates".
we arrange you a "blind date" with another artist. kind of a "blind split".
you must send us a piece of exactly 2 minutes, and so has the other invited person (your couple).
we get your piece and his piece (exactly same lenght). then we overlap both.
x (your piece) + y (the other guy piece) = xy (resulting track on the cd)
please send your track in a cd.

the tracks we have got so far are just amazing and the ones we have tried to overlap work fucking brilliantly. the blind date thingee works top.

hope you enjoy the project as much as we do.
please reply as fast as possible
thanx a lot

2002 release ; second comp from atp, covering artists appearing at the sonic youth-curated all tomorrow’s parties festival ... standout contributions include those by satanstornade (i.e. merzbow & russell haswell), kevin drumm, the dead c, the boredoms, bardo pond, etc ...
atp/recordings press release...
originally released in 2001 as the companion to atp 1.0, all tomorrow's parties 1.1 was curated by sonic youth, and was initially created to accompany the all tomorrow's parties events held in los angeles and england.

this compilation definitely has the sonic youth fingerprint with acts as far ranging as noise mavens boredoms to husky crooner cat power. features exclusive unreleased tracks and new song versions by sonic youth, unwound, stephen malkmus, stereolab, bardo pond, cat power, papa m, cannibal ox, dead c, boredoms, kevin drumm and satans tornade.

this compilation captures the very spirit of the atp festival by matching disparate musical elements that together create a cross-section of the very best under-represented music.

the sound projector (uk) #tsp vinyl mag

the sound projector presents... vinyl viands 2006” magazine

  • 100 lp record reviews !!!
with this november 2006special” issue it’s pretty much official; the sound projector is the best experimental music magazine running, at least from my jilted standpoint...

in this issue mr. pinsent selects a stack of vinyl from his shelf, then sits down and concocts witty expositions on their contents, methods of acquisition, etc... the whole thing has this ritualistic flair but never dips into sheer repetition; there’s always something interesting to say, some revelation to be found.

records reviewed in this issue range from recent noise vinyl way on back to 60s esp-disk originals; not your “keeping up with the new release schedules” coverage here, no sir... ed is as likely to review a rare 1970 french prog lp as he is the new fusetron title.

it’s a joy to read and genuinely funny to boot. if you’ve ever pored the shelves of your local mom & pop record shop for dusty experimental gelt, you’ll be familiar with the thrill of the hunt celebrated within these pages. very highly recommended!

collection of answer-pieces on the oeuvre of dave philips’ late 80s hardcore band “fear of god.” damn - look at that lineup... reads like my own personal mix-tape from the noisier end of the contemporary sound-terrorism/experimental music spectrum. few disappoint with their decisively short remix-blasts... just about as good as remix-compilation discs get...
