long-awaited new material from kevin drumm, a single piece jointly composed with prolific northwest noise/tribal-percussion producer daniel menche...

“gauntlet” starts off with a lone bit of post-hardcore guitar riffing, then builds slowly via concurrent layers of drum-kit/cymbal splash & further direct-pedal guitar tones... before of course heating up into an impressive shitstorm of hundreds of layers of said ingredients, laying out halfway through into a gorgeous void of subterranean electronics & variable-tempo gating, finally conking out into a few minute of kevin’s trademark doepfer comparator/slew chop...

this is miles away from each composer’s solo work... closer to the sound of a coupla 80s sst records being fed simultaneously through some sort of sentient auto-composition framework... some of the direct-to-4-track-mic-input guitar tones remind me of spanish black metal, but otherwise this is on its own path entirely. nothing short of totally impressive, and due to the short-sharp-shock of it; something that doesn’t overstay its welcome. highly recommended.

with all that’s happened in music in the intervening years this still sounds like a flock of mutagen-addled locusts organizing a dawn raid on all that is sacred ... if anything, the sonic power of this music has grown logarithmically, threatening to break out of the 1/0 stream that binds it to the compact disc itself and expand into some un-knowable form.

in my mind this is one of the defining moments in the school of electro-acoustic noise “composition” that enjoys so much (even if still marginal) success these days; go back to the blueprint here and see how little has changed, and in fact how much regression has taken place ...highly recommended !!!

chicago-based kevin drumm (guitar, electronics) and montreal-based martin tétreault (turntables) traveled in separate musical circles, each unaware of the other's work, until a chicago-based organization, lampo, booked tétreault for a concert with drumm and the ubiquitous jim o'rourke in september of 1999. while tétreault was in chicago, he and drumm spent some time in the studio, and this cd contains the results, as recorded by tv pow's todd carter.

drumm, best known for his two superb solo records on perdition plastics, and tétreault, best known for his collaborative series of discs on ambiances magnetiques with the likes of otomo yoshihide and ikue mori, meld their techniques seamlessly to form a thoroughly integrated record. while both musicians are more than capable of playing solo sets filled with compelling ideas from beginning to end, here both seem to make a conscious effort to subsume their identities in order to create a greater work.

the ephemeral and seeming lightness of the tones hang with taut balance in contrast to the method in which they are overlapped and rotated with deadly weight. how wildly divergent emotions rise, hover, and fall using so little is a mystery that only kevin drumm can provide. while you may not find an answer, you can certainly get lost in the question.

alternating between an almost hafler-trio-ian selection of instrumental/episodic mood-pieces and (dare i say it) sections recalling robert ashley’s “operas”(dom, voice pitched down, recites the “libretto” below over kevin’s static wave-field...), this is arguably the first text-sound piece in dom’s oeuvre (at the very least; the first in which his text is readily intelligible). kevin’s contributions range from floating sine-wave combinations and considerably more abrasive/rectified sections of plundered salon music, analogue synth patterns, and slowly mutating chord-shapes...

evocative stuff; certainly not for the weak-of-constitution...

easily the most “hi-fi” harsh noise recording i’ve hear all year ; the mastering & pressing quality are stellar throughout (natch i love the satanic cat insert as well ; detail below) ; highly recommended !!!

mika vainio / kevin drumm / axel dörner / lucio capece 'venexia' (pan 28)

the original idea of this project was to allow musicians from different scenes (but who shared common ideas) to work together. in this case, a development of two pre existent duos.

quite often musicians from different sonic languages can be seen being put together, trying to push the artists to develop unexpected works. vainio, drumm, dörner and capece have mainly strong points in common, that have been executed in different contexts. the music map is generally divided into categories that are determined by it's most evident and often banal elements; if it has beats or not, if it is quiet or loud, if it has raw material or a carefully worked aesthetic. these four musicians have been working using all the previous elements, but these elements did not determine the music, they were used at the service of deeper ideas related to time and perception. how the sound of our environment can become music, how can music be attractive without telling a story, the work of sound in it's extreme: noise, granular and delicate, digital, electronic, instrumental extended techniques, preparations.

kevin drumm and axel dörner started working together in the late 90's as part of a trio with paul lovens, as a duo they released an influential album on erstwhile records. vainio and drumm met in 2005 in australia, both as part of the touring festival what is music?. even if both musicians declared to have a great time touring in australia, they did never played together. drumm's and vainio's music is often compared by critics. capece has released a duo cd on l'innomable label with axel dörner and a trio one with dörner and tubist robin hayward on azul discográfica label from new york. dörner and capece worked in several projects together, including a residence with keith rowe working on " treatise" by cornelius cardew. mika vainio and lucio capece have released together the album "trahnie". an album they worked for three years on, and also did several concerts as a duo.

in may 2008 the quartet made a 6 days residency and concert at vooruit, in gent, followed by a 5 concert european tour, that took them to venice. in 2011 the group played at konfrontationen festival in austria. in the meanwhile capece and vainio have been part of the vladislav delay quartet. capece has played, and toured with kevin drumm in a trio with radu malfatti and dörner has played with drumm in a trio with paul lovens, at the meteo festival, in france. the recording in venice is a multitrack one. it was mixed by capece with minimal edits, basically panning and volume adjustments.

the lp is mastered and cut by rashad becker at d&m, pressed on 140g vinyl and comes in a poly-lined inner sleeve. it is packaged in a pro-press color jacket which itself is housed in a silkscreened pvc sleeve with photos by traianos pakioufakis & artwork by kathryn politis & bill kouligas.

upon its release (and even now, still, to some extent) this was a divisive title, not quite fitting in w/ the time’s reigning “lowercase” aesthetic, nor the harsh noise, metal, or digital music scenes with which kevin eventually found allegiance ... consisting instead of scrabbly figures run through an upper-threshold gate, then processed with heavy filtering and gain-based effects. there are certainly parallels between some of the harsher segments (listen to the sound-sample for a terse segment - book-ended by silence for at least a minute in either direction) of “sheer hellish miasma” ; the final track’s 17 minutes of glacial drift hedged with at first subliminal, then overbearing dat-tape distortions reminds of some of his more recent collaborative work ...

a great disc, a challenge for sure, but i’m amazed at how much more permissive we’ve all become to what was undoubtedly the most “out-there” thing i had ever heard back in ‘97 ... highly recommended !!!

may 2010 release ; wow. didn’t see this coming ; a five-disc set compiling a bunch of of “small run” full-length titles issued over the past few years with kevin drumm’s name on them (including the hospital “malaise” tape, the “s/t” lp on dilemma, his side of the 2673 split on kitty play) along with several discs of until-now unreleased music dating back to 1998 ...

while much of the material here is in & of the “noise” idiom(s), i was surprised to find much in the way of sparser materials (certainly the early-electronic feel of “old shit 1” was a revelation ; listen to the sound-sample) & high-frequency, keening “inside-your-head” pieces ala maryanne amacher’s “sound characters” ... plus the full version of kevin’s defining “organ” (cut down to 17 1/2 on “comedy” but here restored to the full 55 minutes) is incredible, filling the room with a void of air-pushing bass that rivals anything in the sunn o))) canon ...

comes as 5 separate discs, each in their own full-color slip-sleeve, along with a 24-page booklet of dismal photos of presumably kevin’s wicker park lair (pre & post renovation / abandonment) ... i can’t see how anyone that’s been following kevin’s arc since his mid-90s solo guitar statements through the harsh noise & plaintive long-form drone work won’t be bowled over by this veritable treasure trove of material ; highly recommended !!!

just received an email from manu at savage land - he's shooting for a june release date for the tom smith / kevin drumm album, reconquer sleep or disappear. yee-haw! the mockups hardly do the artwork justice, as they were produced on a non-pro printer. still, they should give you an idea of the layout - multi-fold cardstock sleeve, full color, in a limited edition of 300 compact discs (not cd-rs). as for the muzak? thirty-four meandering oboe solos. try not to saw off your ankles while in the thrall of anticipatory bliss!

may 2010 release ; out-of-seemingly-nowhere & absurdly production-value-oriented double-vinyl reissue of kevin drumm’s watershed debut full-length, replete with a newly-discovered set of era pieces released here for the first time (an entire new sidesworth of pointillist crackle !!! listen to the sound-sample for a taste) ...

regarding the music ::

... classic 1997 release, featuring “guitar”, “recorded directly to tape in fall, 1996” ...

upon its release (and even now, still, to some extent) this was a divisive title, not quite fitting in w/ the time’s reigning “lowercase” aesthetic, nor the harsh noise, metal, or digital music scenes with which kevin eventually found allegiance ... consisting instead of scrabbly figures run through an upper-threshold gate, then processed with heavy filtering and gain-based effects. there are certainly parallels between some of the harsher segments of “sheer hellish miasma” ; the final track’s 17 minutes of glacial drift hedged with at first subliminal, then overbearing dat-tape distortions reminds of some of his more recent collaborative work ...

a great album, a challenge for sure, but i’m amazed at how much more permissive we’ve all become to what was undoubtedly the most “out-there” thing any of us had ever heard back in ‘97 ...

... comes in a (frankly, incredible looking / feeling) embossed glossy gatefold sleeve with new artwork (wax-damaged macro-images of the guitar used to ... generate this music) with two separate double-sided inserts (detailed below) ; plus, and i know this is like stroking a charged mare at this point, but the reference-quality cut c/o dubplates & mastering’s rachad becker is beyond good, revealing detail that i hadn’t even noticed in the digital 1/1 cd version ...

high praise to both c. spencer yeh for the vision to press this “un-cuttable” music to wax & peter kolovos for the epic “archival quality” realization ... highly recommended !!!

thin wrist recordings presents the expanded and definitive double lp edition of kevin drumm's groundbreaking first album, originally released in 1997. featuring some of the most fiercely abstract and organic guitar work ever heard, drumm's debut is both jarring and completely alien. dubbed by some as the greatest prepared guitar record ever recorded it prefigured (and continues to trump) almost an entire decade or so of contemporary "out" music that would follow. beautiful and completely essential.

this edition includes an entire fourth side of previously unreleased recordings from drumm's personal archive, all recorded in the same era as the original album. it also includes entirely new artwork featuring the body of the actual guitar used to record the album.

the album comes housed in a heavy textured gatefold jacket and includes two full color inserts. high quality 2 x 180 gram vinyl pressed at pallas germany and mastered by rashad becker at d&m berlin.

looking back at kevin through his formidably individual tunnel of works, it's hard to remember that his first official recorded statement would be caught sneaking into bed alongside history's milestones of "solo instrument improvisation." or that, in turn, it also would be caught trying to sneak out of the house built by father jazz, into a backyard that still hasn't quite been fenced off yet. those running around chicago chasing down the sound in the mid-90's should've already known about this guy and his contributions both in and out of the relative spotlight. for those far from the city winds, thankfully they might've gotten the message in the form of this missive. in the afterglow of later love letters titled “sheer hellish miasma” and “imperial distortion”, it's absolutely overdue that this first musty green postcard be dug out, polished off, and framed.

judged by its understated title, "self-titled" aka "guitar" is incredibly literal -- what you hear is what you get. in the simplest considerations, the ensuing connotations and possibilities are wide open; the real-time velocity of urgent decision and movement are wrapped in a clearly-mapped compositional endurance that continues to stand firmly in the relative spotlights of this day. no surprise then, that even all these years later, we would still be trying to figure out exactly at which table kevin should squarely sit.

they say that every kid who heard this record immediately went out and grabbed a busted guitar with a scratchy selector switch, ready to subject their friends to fuzzy pauses of amp hum. i know of at least four.

whereas the other two comps are concerned with... japan and europe (respectively), this is the “american” one.

but actually, geographical affinity or not, this is probably the best out of the three, simply for the fact that there’s an earth track. their particular blend of molasses and bee stinger fits in quite nicely amongst the a-list skree provided by the rest-lot.

with this november 2006 “special” issue it’s pretty much official; the sound projector is the best experimental music magazine running, at least from my jilted standpoint...

in this issue mr. pinsent selects a stack of vinyl from his shelf, then sits down and concocts witty expositions on their contents, methods of acquisition, etc... the whole thing has this ritualistic flair but never dips into sheer repetition; there’s always something interesting to say, some revelation to be found.

records reviewed in this issue range from recent noise vinyl way on back to 60s esp-disk originals; not your “keeping up with the new release schedules” coverage here, no sir... ed is as likely to review a rare 1970 french prog lp as he is the new fusetron title.

it’s a joy to read and genuinely funny to boot. if you’ve ever pored the shelves of your local mom & pop record shop for dusty experimental gelt, you’ll be familiar with the thrill of the hunt celebrated within these pages. very highly recommended!
