entr’acte press release...
scott taylor & srmeixner
please keep clear at all times (e34)

a collaborative album between scott taylor, whose previous releases can be found on the sijis, touch, and con-v labels, and srmeixner, once a member of the influential uk group contrastate. 'please keep clear at all times' consists of three tracks, combining musique concrète, field recordings, and other source material (the piano of kenneth kirschner and recordings by m.a. tolosa on kirschner wind, and vocals by jonathan grieve on the sound of x) into dramatic soundscapes. the latter track, composed by an additive process of file exchange, is a radical re-working of a live srmeixner concert recording made by scott taylor. aside from recording work, scott taylor and srmeixner also run, respectively, the lapilli and black rose recordings labels.

first edition of 300 copies.

camera lucida
line_030 dvd

line is proud to announce the release of its first dvd, camera lucida. the project by russian/american installation and video artists, evelina domnitch and dmitry gelfand and developed in collaboration with scientific laboratories in japan, germany, russia and belgium.

camera lucida (chamber of light or lucidity) is a 3-dimensional sonic observatory that directly transforms sound into light by employing a phenomenon known as sonoluminescence: ultrasound, propagating within a liquid, triggers the formation and implosion of micro-bubbles that reach temperatures as high as are found on the sun, and emit light in the shape of sound waves. the authors of the installation, evelina domnitch and dmitry gelfand, joined forces with multiple sound artists to create the sonochemical compositions presented on this dvd.

this dvd also contains a data partition with uncompressed high resolution audio files of all the works.

evelina domnitch and dmitry gelfand create sensory immersion environments that merge physics, chemistry and computer science with uncanny philosophical practices. having dismissed all forms of fixative and recording media, domnitch and gelfand's installations exist as ever-transforming phenomena offered for observation. because these rarely seen manifestations take place directly in front of the observer without being distorted and flattened onto a screen, they often serve to vastly extend the observer's sensory envelope.

their works have been exhibited worldwide, including shows at v2 institute for unstable media (rotterdam, netherlands), nijo castle (kyoto, japan), museum of dreams (st. petersburg, russia), i-20 gallery (new york, usa), die schachtel (milan, italy) and tesla (berlin, germany).

"camera lucida is a highly introspective immersive spatial art work creating a fleeting ephemeral materiality by intersecting ultrasound with hyperlight... in essence the creation of a sonic aurora. domnitch and gelfand's piece rejects any possibility to be fixed in space and time, but rather offers up the very definition of an unstable work of art, existing entirely for and within the perceptive realm of the viewer." - stephen kovats, director of transmediale 2008

due to the detailed and subtle visual nature of this work and phenomenon the artists have chosen to use pal over ntsc encoding to maintain the maximum resolution possible for the movie and sound files. this dvd is region free and can be played on any computer dvd drive. no region switching is necessary for television screen viewing, it can only playback on a pal or multi-system dvd player. playback in a darkened space with monitor brightness turned up is encouraged.

room40 (australia) #edrm418 cd

taylor deupree / kenneth kirschnermay” compact disc

  • may 9, 2008 (36:18)
room40 press release...
taylor deupree & kenneth kirschner
may

may is the latest collaboration between new york composers taylor deupree and kenneth kirschner. recorded on may 9, 2008 at the offf festival in lisbon, portugal, the album represents the first available live recording of deupree and kirschner's concert performances. continuing in the direction of their acclaimed post_piano series, deupree and kirschner's live work explores the intersection between piano and digital music technology.

for this performance, deupree and kirschner took an even more experimental approach than they have in past concerts: sitting side by side at a single grand piano, they both played piano and both played laptop, with kirschner playing the keys of the piano and deupree directly manipulating the strings inside, even as they both shared the duties of electronic processing and sample manipulation.

the result is a rich and complex mixture of digital and acoustic timbres that breaks new ground in their ongoing exploration of the role of the piano in contemporary electronic music.

graceful degradation : variations” compact disc

  • heribert friedl - rehsa (8:07)
  • john hudak - snd8 (8:55)
  • steve roden - gration degradaceful (5:16)
  • jason kahn - am wasser (5:05)
  • ubeboet - untitled #305 variation (17:26)
debut release on this new label run by up-and-coming composer / sound-designer asher thal-nir (known to most simply by his forename, asher) ; based right here in good ‘ol somerville ...

essentially this is a “reworkings” collection of materials by asher himself, sourced back to a cassette his early minimal loop-based compositions ... and i must say, given the material, he’s chosen a fine range of subjects to transform his music, ranging from steinbrüchel’s grainy, lo-bit digital smear to heribert friedl’s almost raga-ish drone (listen to the sound-sample) to perhaps ubeboet’s most faithful reading, leaving the tape-hiss of the original materials intact ...

a very nice disc & an auspicious start for this new domestic imprint ...

sd-001: graceful degradation: variations
2.2008
cd limited to 500 copies
featuring: heribert friedl, john hudak, jason kahn, kenneth kirschner, steve roden, steinbrüchel and ubeboet.

the source recording for the compositions featured on this album still exist on a single 90 minute cassette, made by the intermagnetics corporation from santa monica, california. there are still some bits of led zeppelin here and there which remain among my recordings, but mostly the tape is full of recording i made. i remember working with this tape for several months over the summer and into fall of 2005, in my apartment in brooklyn; i would spend hours going through the material and trying to find different combinations of the recordings of the sounds which are stored on it. after a certain period of time working with the material i put together some pieces for an album release and thought i was done. but in the end i went back and continued working, it is the material from this second period of work which has been used by the artists featured on this release.

the concept of graceful degradation in relation to memory as well as system failure, seemed quite fitting to the work i was doing, as well as to the work of other sound recording artists. there is a relationship that develops between our own memories and recordings made and archived using various data storage and retrieval technologies which i am very interested in; i initiated this project with this interest in mind.

as a continuation of the graceful degradation of my original recordings i asked seven artists to use the material in their own ways to create a new piece. each artist put the material into their systems of working with sound and came up with the results featured on this album. i am very honored to have their contributions and pleased to present them on this first release on sourdine.
