march 2010 release ; lovely set from doubtmusic actually offering two separaterecordings(let’s still call them “records”) by the quartet of axel dörner, takayanagi alum nobuyoshi ino, east bionic symphonia / taj majal traveler kazuo imai, and noritaka tanaka ...

first, a disc of free improvisations by the quartet (loose & free in a decidedly european mould) then another of axel’s compositions (largely rehashing his pieces for die enttauschung) ...

this is the masterpiece of 2cds, splitting the music into improvisation (momentary composition) and / or composition.

disc 1 is the improvised music by axel, ino, imai. guitar sound of imai is hot and tingling, ino plays careful his choice pizzicato and arco exquisitely, and axel's original sound bring 'out' into their music. their atmosphere of music is special one, cannot be similar from every music.

disc 2 consists of all axel's composition. he play several tunes also on "die enttauschung" (with rudi mahall, etc) but every tunes' structure is very vivid. note drum playing by nori, who is invited to play by axel !

if jazz is survive in present day, this work is the real contemporary "jazz" today.

october 2008 release ; great set of caustic, noisy electro-acoustic improv by this contemporary ensemble, led by takayanagi student / taj mahal travellers & marginal consort member kazuo imai ...

... a bizarre guitar / optron / electronicspower trio” consisting of imai, ito atsuhiro, and suzuki manabu, the three go to town on a set of standards culled from the peacock, monk, konitz, & porter songbooks ; the heads played in a barely-recognizable manner before peals of gnarly electronic hysteresis & scrabbly guitar chonk are channeled-in (listen to the sound-sample) ...

deluxe edition comes with the studio recording as a cd & a bonus dvd offering a static in-studio shot (see below) of the action as it unfolds (the “optron” has as much to do with it’s visual appeal as the sounds it emits) all inside a japanese mini-lp gatefold sleeve. highly recommended !!!

imai kazuo guitar,
ito atsuhiro optron
suzuki manabu electronics

this trio was formed by imai kazuo (guitar), suzuki manabu (handmade electronics), and ito atsuhiro (optron) in july, 2005. i'm using a controllable instrument along with uncontrollable electronic sound devices that may make the music somewhat difficult to remain stable, yet its context of where i am now is the one that is similar to jazz.

imai kazuo, from linernotes

imai kazuo is the one and only graduate of takayanagi masayuki's private guitar school. he played with kosugi takehisa's "taj mahal travellers" or takayanagi's "new direction", and what's more, he played with lee konitz, arther doyle, irene schweizer, barre phillips, and so on. he also organize "marginal consort" and "imai kazuo trio" recently.

ito atsuhiro plays optron. he use a handmade fluorescent light as a instrument. he named it "optron". optron strike the intense noise. he control it as feedback noise or low frequency. he was also a owner of the legendary art space called off-site. off-site familiarized "onkyo" music as otomo yoshihide, sachiko-m, sugimoto taku, nakamura toshimaru, and so on.

suzuki manabu is actually a engineer of electronic instrument for artists but recently he plays his own handmade electronics. his handmade instrument is very interesting and exciting. the sound is strange and hypnotic, not any old noise, it's his style. he collaborate with various artist, musician and dancer.
