crouton no.38
jeph jerman and jon mueller
nodes and anti-nodes
dvd + audio file

after years of working with sound and vibrations, and documenting prepared and unprepared situations on recordings, jeph jerman and jon mueller now present a tapestry of visualizations to these sounds with ‘nodes and anti-nodes.’ the dvd shows close-up views of the subtle actions in vibrating bodies, both audible and not. these scenes are glimpses into situations that ernst chladni and hans jenny might have pursued in a more scientific direction. but for the lay viewer, it’s simply interesting to watch the real-time relationship between sound and material, and the juxtaposition of the results of natural movements paired with absolute silence. for those that would enjoy listening to the audio portion on the go, an individual mp3 file of the audio can be pulled from the disc.

the dvd is packaged in a 7 letterpressed and numbered chip board case and is limited to an edition of 300 copies.

about jeph jerman:

began playing drums in 1972 at the age of 13. spent my formative years in various bar bands while simultaneously seeking out more adventurous people to make more adventurous music. formed/joined a myriad of ensembles to that end, including: big joey, blowhole, city of worms etc. in the mid ’90’s i moved to seattle wa and became involved with the local improvised music community, playing with just about everyone. at some point i began to deconstruct my drum kit, ending up with a pile of sonorous things that i gradually replaced with stones, shells, sticks and feathers. i continue to investigate various ways of making/capturing sound and to document my efforts.

about jon mueller:

jon mueller has been an active drummer and percussionist since the mid-80s. whether utilizing bombastic minimalism, dense interplay, or electroacoustic practices, his approach focuses on a physical dialog between situation and material. he has been featured on numerous recordings, and has performed throughout the u.s., japan, and europe.

jon muellerwhat’s lost is something important. what’s found is something not revealed.” compact disc

  • what’s lost is something important. what’s found is something not revealed.
crouton press release...
crouton no.26
jon mueller: "what's lost is something important. what's found is something not revealed."
cd

after seven years in existence, crouton is pleased to announce its first solo release from jon mueller.

for the past two years, individuals have been invited to contribute their beards, which would then be filed and placed in a special wooden case, for no apparent reason. the process, on the other hand, revealed many conversations that would not have taken place; moments of understanding, insight, curiosity, and and overall positive manifestations that possibly would not have happened under 'normal' circumstances. the intent of this recording is to mimic this process. on the surface, it is two compositions for solo percussion, using pieces from a typical drum set. but one would likely not realize this by listening.

jon mueller either spent the necessary time to teach his drums how to actually sustain something, or he found them lying in the same swamp as the warner bros. frog. in any case, he has coaxed a gorgeous cd out of them: complex textures of sustained snares, nocturnal bells, and asymmetrical rhythms arising as if from within the drums; all subtly ordered, sometimes melting from passage to passage, sometimes popping with tape-edit precision. the pieces have the gravity of fine drone work, but they are also injected with a dry wit and assembled with the mechanations of a puzzle master. there are no singing frogs on this disc, no merely novel moments. mueller makes the most of his chorus, and the music resonates as something beyond the sum of its parts, however interesting those parts may be. thus hopefully this cd, like the collection of beards, will also inspire conversations that might not have otherwise taken place, moments of understanding, curiosity, etc.

mueller has worked with pele, asmus tietchens, jason kahn, bhob rainey, hal rammel, lionel marchetti, jack wright, achim wollscheid, steve nelson-raney, matt turner, and is a member of collections of colonies of bees. he has recorded for labels such as auf abwegen, penumbra, polyvinyl, rrrecords, mode, sixgunlover, feverpitch, and stasisfield. performances occur regularly in the basement, as well as public venues around the world.

cd

recorded in a 110 degree room after a nearly sleepless 17 hour drive. yet, the material on this cd has nothing to do with that. here, bhob rainey transforms the saxophone from instrument to species, jon mueller plays snare drums with a home stereo system, and jim schoenecker sits across the room and stares at you, creepily. meanwhile, boston was melting under the relentless sadism of the sun. for the musicians, this recording involved discovery, survival, and dustin hoffman. its organization was the direct result of caffeine and unemployment. for the listener, it might very well be the impossible made possible. for in this recording lies a sense of urgent contact; a message understood, yet surely incredible to decipher. happy faces appear on food items. inanimate objects come actively to life.

...

jon mueller has worked within a variety of genres with the likes of pele, collections of colonies of bees, asmus tietchens, achim wollscheid, aranos, matt turner, hal rammel and others. his recordings are available worldwide and he has toured throughout the u.s. and japan.

bhob rainey has collaborated with gunter mueller, lionel marchetti, kevin drumm, ralf wehowsky, jerome noetinger, and jason lescalleet, to name a few. with trumpeter greg kelley, he is the cofounder of the unlikely improv supergroup, nmperign, and is also the founder and director of the premier electroacoustic ensemble, the bsc.

jim schoenecker has released electronic music under the name pressboard for a variety of labels including zod, antiopic, and stassisfield. he has performed in the u.s. and japan, and is 1/2 of the topscore label which releases electronic and experimental music and video.

korm plastics press release...
jon mueller & martijn tellinga - brombron 13
korm plastics kp 3028
minicd only

korm plastics is proud to present the eleventh release in the brombron series. originally a co-production between staalplaat and extrapool, it is now hosted by co-curator frans de waard. in the year 2000 frans de waard and extrapool started the brombron project. two or more musicians become artists in residence in extrapool, an arts initiative in nijmegen, the netherlands, with a fully equipped sound recording studio. these artists can work in a certain amount of time on a collaborative project; a project they always wished to do, but didn't have the time or the equipment to realize.

jon mueller and martijn tellinga have started a collaboration to explore the musical dialogue between the instrumentalist and realtime computer-performer. their mutual interest in the outlining and structuring of improvisation, both in sonic properties and compositional shape, resulted in an ensembled playing that is partly responsive, partly autonomous.

during their residency at the extrapool studio in nijmegen, netherlands december 2005. during this residency they experimented with a system that consisted of live-sampling and processing of jon's playing, on top of a layer of pre-recorded soundmaterials taken from a previous session. crucial to this system, was that the actual triggering of the samples and processing in the computer during performance was also caused by that same playing; i.e., while jon was improvising he not only provided new sonic material for recording, but also triggered previously recorded events. the realtime manipulation and transformation of these events was done by martijn following that same structural order. this experimental system was developed to get to a musical body that can either blend into one (percussion and computer) or exist as two entities that function in an autonomous way (bypassing the triggering and playing the computer as a stand-alone instrument, using the same set of soundmaterials) and perform by listening and responding to each others input. this can be seen as an attempt to get beyond the many electro-instrumental collaborations where the computer-performer seems to function as a huge effect-processor of the instrumental input, and by doing that, reduces the instrumentalist to a soundsource for realtime processing.

jon mueller has been an active drummer and percussionist since the early 90s. whether utilizing bombastic minimalism, dense interplay, or electroacoustic practices, his approach focuses on a physical dialog between situation and material. he has been featured on numerous recordings and has performed throughout the u.s., japan, and the netherlands. he has performed/recorded with: aranos, keith berry, jarboe, tetuzi akiyama, jason kahn, asmus tietchens, jack wright, carol genetti, collections of colonies of bees, tatsuya nakatani, hal rammel, steve nelson-raney, jim schoenecker, bhob rainey, glenn kotche, pele, steven hess, werner moebius, lionel marchetti, adam sonderberg, tim catlin, matt turner, achim wollscheid, fred lonberg-holm's lightbox orchestra and others.

martijn tellinga (1974, netherlands) is a composer and sound-artist in the field of new electroacoustic music and sonic arts. his work shows a great care for textural qualities and eye for compositoric detail and seeks its identity somewhere in the overlap of formalized form and intuitive musicmaking. more than relying on melody, harmony and rhythm, these works are constructed from the fundamental building blocks of music: timbre, texture, volume and time-elapse. tellinga composes for quadraphonic- and multichannel environments, exploring both sonic directionality as well as spatial characteristics of the physical setting the work is performed in. currently he is pursuing a master's degree in sonology at the royal conservatory the hague - netherlands, studying with paul berg and kees tazelaar.

in the past years his work has been performed and exhibited at numerous occasions inthe netherlands and international festivals in belgium, france, germany, finland, uk, austria, swiss, italy, portugal, greece and usa. works have been commisioned by labels such as - korm plastics - (hol), - spekk - (japan), - cronica electronica - (portugal) and - stichting mixer - (hol).

tellinga has collaborated with several filmmakers, video-artists and autonome artists, providing soundtracks for animated - and short films and developing installation-like media environments. he has worked with a.o. finnish filmmaker and journalist sami kallinen, autonome artists jan robert leegte and sagi groner and is currently developing an integrated audio-visual performance with austrian video-artist dextro.

his ongoing project 'boca raton' particularly deals with the synthesis between concrete -unstaged- sound and synthetic sonorities. as it has never shown any steady state what-so-ever, the project develops over time according to the composer's ideas and capacities, within the flexibalised margins of this field of interest. together with dutch composers radboud mens and danny de graan he forms 'elmgar ten', building soundinstalltions functioning as performance-tools. furthermore he has recently started an electro-instrumental collaboration with percussionist jon mueller, to explore the musical dialogue between the instrumentalist and realtime computer-instruments.

in 1999 he started the platform for contemporary electro-acoustic music stichting mixer, having organised numerous events and released over 25 titles today. finally, he is programmer for the dutch new music radiostation 'de concertzender', being one of the 4 programmers for '230 volt', a weekly program focussing on historic and contemporary electro-acoustic music.

melissa st. pierre tosses classicism and post-classicism overboard, utilizing the prepared pianojohn cage's notorious instrument of choice – and electronic enhancement to sail resolutely in the direction of rock & roll. peppering the strings, hammers, and dampers with a variety of objects, she transforms the piano's typical timbre: sparkling gamelans chatter; harrowing voodoo drums call out in the night. specimens, st. pierre's debut ep, features production and performances by collections of colonies of beeszeena parkins as conservatory arsonists with a decidedly hendrixian flair.

specimens is an enhanced cd with exclusive video content.

  • guitar trio pt. 2, milwaukee (19:04)
  • guitar trio pt. 1, chicago (30:23)
  • guitar trio pt. 2, brooklyn (16:27)
... as psyched i am for this mammoth set of alternating renditions of rhys chatham’s “guitar trio pt. 1” and “guitar trio pt.2” - i can’t help but be a little bummed at the omission of either of the boston takes (which, to my amp-damaged ears, sounded quite fine w/chris brokaw, david daniell, winston bramman, myself, and the devil music guys essentially playing a single-chord to a sold-out allston-rock-city crowd for over an hour) - but that’s neither here nor there ...

what you do get from this excellent triple-disc box are takes from the brooklyn, buffalo, chicago, cleveland, milwaukee, minneapolis, montreal, and toronto stagings of the piece during february 2007, performed with ludicrously high levels of energy by chatham himself, along with such notables as andrew broder, tony conrad, david daniell, kim gordon, alan licht, robert longo, rob “lichens” lowe, doug mccombs, thurston moore, jon mueller, harris newman, jeff parker, lee ranaldo, chris rosenau, adam & ben vida, etc ...

if you don’t know the piece ; it’s essentially an exercise in yielding what chatham himself describes as “choiring” - a heavy, upper-register buildup of harmonic movement that results when so many guitar players, over 20 minutes, slowly work across an open e minor chord from the low e to the high e, at deafening volume, while a single drummer keeps time on a hi-hat (pt. 1) or contributes with a “driving backbeat” followed by a long fill / freak-out (pt. 2) - it’s the ultimate in high-gain rock ‘n’ roll minimalism, really, and because of the open interpretation, the piece can swing pretty heavily in a number of directions given the players - hence this collection offering 5 different realizations of each part by 8 different groups ...

highly recommended as a historical document and as a testament to the piece’s lasting relevance ...

rhys chatham & his guitar trio all-stars
guitar trio is my life !

utilizing multiple electric guitars and a single chord, 1977’s “guitar trio” is composer rhys chatham’s signature work, and a euphoric, minimal-punk classic. it’s an inspired amalgamation — the droning, shimmering harmonics of john cale and tony conrad fused with the power and fury of the ramones — that had a meteoric impact. it placed chatham at the forefront of the burgeoning no wave scene; its influence then spread further, as protégés and participants in chatham’s ensembles — including glenn branca and members of sonic youth — folded the sound into their own. “guitar trio” remains a composition with a half-life, an adventure in sound that continues to radiate influence and inspiration.

now, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of “guitar trio” on an epic scale, chatham musters an all-star guitar army for the 3xcd set, “guitar trio is my life!” the sprawling collection features members of sonic youth, swans, tortoise, godspeed you! black emperor, hüsker dü, modern lovers, silver mt. zion, town and country, die kreutzen, 90-day men, collections of colonies of bees, and many more; even tony conrad gets in on the act. together these artists celebrate chatham’s wordless anthem, with its minimalist origins, rock & roll rhythm, ecstatic whorl of harmonics, and ever-evolving, ever-expanding nature.

so, take a listen, and hear what one man can do with hundreds of guitars, 30 years, one chord, and a skyscraper of amps set to liquefy. “guitar trio” endures.

jon muellerstrung (clear vinyl)” one-sided long playing record

  • strung (17:26)
june 2008 release ; the third in the ongoing guitar series vols. 3 & 4 ...

this installment, by the insanely prolific all-of-the-sudden jon mueller (no, not a “guitarist” per se, i know, but bear with me) works an almost pan(a)sonic-esque streak of pulsing white noise, all sourced to electric guitars ; recalls some of glenn branca’s early work (i.e. stephan wischerth’s anvil replaced by an electric guitar on a stand ...) ... pretty damn mesmerising ...

jon mueller
strung

table of the elements celebrate its 15th anniversary with the third disk in its guitar series vols. 3 & 4, a 12xlp romp of deviant fretnoise by some of experimental music’s most prominent players, including christian fennesz, thurston moore, and sunn o)))’s stephen o’malley.

peripatetic composer, performer, improviser, and designer jon mueller is a busy guy, and both the rock and experimental music scenes are the richer for it. as a drummer he propels the ecstatic whorl of collections of colonies of bees and the occasional guitar army of rhys chatham; alternately his solo project, metals, is the most harrowingly intense percussive barrage you’ll ever encounter. he also finds time to collaborate with artists ranging from wilco’s glenn kotche to swansjarboe. whether it’s minimalist bombast, free-improv interplay, or electroacoustic finesse, mueller’s got it covered. but what can he do with a guitar?

in strung, mueller doesn’t play the guitar; he scrambles its molecules. laying down a photon-blast of sound, he initiates a relentless, rapid-pulse attack signal that summons wave upon wave of white noise. think inexorable alien invasion – the day the earth stood still, with lou reed as klaatu and metal machine music as the message. earth doesn’t stand a chance.

format: lp

total running time: 33:39

release date: 5 february 2013

find yourself. impatience. death blues. acceptance. impermanence. iron string. the six songs that comprise jon mueller's death blues are each their own doorway to both a bold new musical statement from the renowned drummer / percussionist and an unprecedented journey into a conscious contemplation of death -- and the life that surrounds it. released in tandem with a multi-part manifesto, death blues transcends its own existence as 34-minute, earth-cracking rock album. much like mueller, whose landmark solo work stands alongside his role in notable bands volcano choir (and previously, collections of colonies of bees), death blues embodies the acknowledgement that there's more to experiencing music than simply just listening.

conceived and largely executed in its recorded form by mueller himself -- adding hammered acoustic guitar and bold vocal patterning to his ever-evolving mastery of percussion -- death blues is audibly (and intensely) personal. however, the very act of recording was the first step in a discourse that mueller began over a year ago, forming a band of brilliant performers from his milwaukee, wi hometown that would go on to perform death blues at hopscotch music festival in raleigh, nc and at two sold-out death blues events in milwaukee, where a labyrinth led the audience into a multi-sensory and participatory experience culminating in a climactic performance of the album. it was as close as one could get to being next to mueller at that moment of discovery: of the inevitability of death as the impetus to become more present in each moment and of the necessity of building his own path to sharing that idea.

death blues is being collaboratively released by taiga and hometapes and is available as a limited edition lp packaged in a deluxe litho-wrapped jacket that includes the death blues manifesto; 500 hand-numbered copies of the highest fidelity pressed on 200g virgin vinyl.

july 2012 release ; ... having just caught these guys at one of the scant few (criminally few) dates they played in advance support of this record, i have a bit of insight to their working methods than the context-free (if lovely) artwork provides ...

... jim plotkin, guitar in hand, seated behind a laptop running a software package of mysterious origin, proceeded to coax a series of attack-free tones out of his axe, feeding them through a long, multi-tap delay line, eventually yielding a seamless array of micro-textures, over which jon, seated behind a traditional drum-kit, first provided a textural wash of gong & cymbal textures ... eventually punctuating the stasis with a series of quickening perturbed accents ...

... this exact dynamic can be heard as track #2 here (hear-able via the sound-sample to your left) ; on record it works just as beautifully, merging two quite disparate aesthetics / approaches into some fairly chasmic common ground ...
taiga press release...

jon mueller and james plotkin first combined forces on physical changes, scorching the leading lp side of mueller's 2009 multi-format collaborative investigation. forging mueller's blistering percussion and rolling hills of drums with plotkin's searing guitar and melting electronics, a sturdy alloy was formed. when both musicians were asked to perform at the utech records music festival in june 2011, at which they appeared as a duo, the pair spent the proceeding days spontaneously unfurling terminal velocity.

recorded in rural wisconsin just outside of mueller's native milwaukee, terminal velocity is an effort of concentration. on the brink of implosion, the duo reduces dense washes of percussion and guitar to thick crusts, at times deceivingly with a whispered intensity. sizzling drums meet electronic warbles as two great forces restrain each other to a constant speed.

mastered by plotkin, cut direct to metal and pressed on 200 gram virgin vinyl, terminal velocity is presented in an edition of 500 copies. packaged in a heavy stoughton tip-on gatefold, the jacket is hand-numbered on the spine and features a textured paper to enhance karlynn holland's graphite drawings the album accompanies.

jon muelleralphabet of movements” long playing record

alphabet of movements” by jon mueller

a devastating exploration into percussive drone from expert drummer jon mueller.

with the music of milwaukee-native jon mueller, patience is the key. his radical snare workouts are meditative master-classes in drumming, but require a distinct offering of time and attention to truly enjoy the dense clouds of sound his music creates. after crafting last year’s critically acclaimed ‘the whole’, mueller decided to put together a live set that, while not reflecting the over-dubbed nature of the album itself, reflected the philosophy held within. the result was ‘i almost expect to be remembered as a chair’, and mueller proceeded to perform this piece at various venues across the usa. utilizing a unique snare drum setup, which finds the drums mounted on small amplifiers, mueller’s enviable focus is put centre-stage and his resolve transferred absolutely into this dense, moving twenty-minute piece. here, the composition has been recorded to tape with a tireless attention to detail by greg norman at steve albini’s legendary electric audio studio. the haunting, resonant drones spring to life with a surprising clarity, and the silo’s natural reverb gives the percussion a deeply human quality.

on the first piece, mueller sticks to his chosen snare, slowly ramping the buzzing rhythm into near-cacophony. by the time the piece is fully formed you barely notice the change you have witnessed, but are surrounded by a cloud of thick, resonant, cavernous drones. the second rendition moves the composition to gongs and sees the dense resonance enhanced by the instruments’ singular plethora of harmonics. it is hard these days to emerge with music that could honestly be described as original, but ‘alphabet of movements’ is a truly singular piece of work. the focus that mueller injects into his composition is unmatched, and his interpretation of drone and noise is absolutely on its own. listen, absorb, and let the sounds permeate; you’ll be coming back for more in no time at all.

the whole” by jon mueller

a beguiling percussion-led exploration into history and the heart that beats beside it.

the whole’ might be avant-percussionist jon mueller’s first album for the type imprint but it’s far from his scene debut. working in a plethora of bands for many years (including ‘collections of colonies of bees’ and ‘volcano choir’ with justin vernon aka bon iver), mueller has honed his sound to a distinct peak, and over the course of umpteen solo albums and collaborations has cemented his status as one of experimental music’s most revered drummers.

following his epic works ‘metals(a collection of classic heavy metal rhythms) and the expansive and surprisingly beautifulphysical changes’, both for the esteemed table of the elements label, mueller embarked on the heady process of creating a ‘defining’ work. intrigued by ideas of simplicity and acoustic sound, mueller’s research drew him to shaker crafts and quilt making, both deceptively simple practices rooted in the transmission of ideas. over time these experiences were interpreted in many different ways, almost certainly inaccurately, and this miscommunicated simplicity is at the very centre of ‘the whole’. through a rolling, unamplified snare drum (a piece of kit perfected over a year of intense practice), booming low toms, hammered dulcimer and his own voice, mueller creates a sound that is wholly original and totally beguiling. there are traces of folk traditions and lines drawn to the avant garde idiom but mueller’s sound is so singularly perfected it is hard to connect him to specific peers.

the whole’ is an album that sounds like both a relic of the past and an echo of the future. the ideas are anchored in memory and tradition, yet the sound is alien and sometimes impenetrable. over time, as the messages are stripped back, an unabashedly gorgeous piece of work is revealed. like a good book, it requires patience and contemplation to show its beating heart.

june 2008 release ; co-production between tote sub-label xeric & jon mueller’s own crouton (with packaging / design sensibilites ala kahn’s cut imprint) this covers the duo’s trip up & down the east coast last spring, w/a brief trip back to mueller’s hometown. on a cursory listen, it’s hard to believe this flowing, drone-oriented sound was derived in any way from percussion instruments ; but that right there’s the crux of this particular formation ...

jon mueller / jason kahn
topography

percussionist jon mueller continues his amazing run of releases (he appears on eight table of the elements titles in the first half of 2008!) with topography, a collaboration with zürich-based sound and visual artist jason kahn. as a drummer, mueller propels collections of colonies of bees and the occasional guitar army of rhys chatham; he also finds time to collaborate with artists ranging from wilco’s glenn kotche to swansjarboe. kahn draws on electronic and acoustic sound sources to create slowly developing compositions imbued with a sense of timelessness.

topography addresses the entity of sound as both a physical and psychological factor shaping our consciousness, and is a remarkable display of electroacoustic finesse. it’s a joint, limited-edition release with mueller’s own crouton label, exquisitely packaged in a debossed, white-on-white jacket.
