ralf wehowsky/johannes frisch tränende würger
kp 3021 - full length cd

1) johannes frisch
works since the late 1970s as a performer, composer and improviser of contemporary music between experimental rock, free jazz and other openminded styles. on his main instrument, the double bass, he works for more than three decades consequently on an individual expressive language. he played with lot of musicians of the international scene of free improvisation and all experimental fields - among others lol coxhill, maggie nicols, johannes bauer, le quan ninh, paul hubweber, michael vorfeld, misha feigin . compositions for theatre, film and dance theater actual projects: kammerflimmer kollektief; home of the beast, with peter hollinger und helmut bieler-wendt; ensemble sondarc, music for six double basses; rat'n'x; trio with paul wirkus & mikolaj trzaska;. concerts & festivals all over europe.

2) ralf wehowsky
founded the group p.d. (in 1981 renamed p16.d4) and the label wahrnehmungen (in 1982 renamed selektion) in 1980. p16.d4 were one of the most influential groups of experimental industrial music. they developed concepts of materialaustausch long before the term remix was even coined. for their live appearances they were equally at home at punk and no wave festivals as at the holy grails of academic avantgarde like the ferientage neuer musik, darmstadt. since the early 90s wehowsky worked under his own name (rlw). the quiet, highly complex style of composition, based on artifacts of instrumental and electronic lateral noises, evolving out of his collaboration with bernhard gnter was influential for numerous artists in the fields of electronic and improvised music. some reflections on his work can be found on tulpas, a 5cd- box-set, featuring more than 50 artists performing their versions of rlw pieces (incl. jim o rourke, brume, achim wollscheid, toshiya tsunoda, john duncan, antanas jasenka, ryoji ikeda, john watermann a.o.). the new decennium started with a surprise for many as first releases showed a new approach of integrating improvised music and composition (as can be found on the cds views and sights, the latter w/ long-time collaborator bruce russell).

3) tränende würger
is based on free improvisations by the frisch/wehowsky duo, reworked with electro-acoustic means. the compositional process did not intend to mask the nonlinear nature of the improvisations. quite on the contrary their organic character has been emphasized by crystal- clear sharpening of details. you ll find complex structures and dark atmospheres, not unlike those on some p16.d4-, this heat- or mnemonists- releases, though absolutely rooted in the 21st century. beauty and posoning are not far from each other.

'tränende würger' comes in a plastic bag, 15x15cm with the artwork on six seperate sheets, dealing with poisenious plants.
design by meeuw.

rlw i.k.k. – purpur
sirr | cd 025

released 02.2006

the i.k.k.-project started in 1794, when christoph schmid wrote the lyrics for ihr kinderlein kommet, using a melody by contemporary composer johann abraham peter schulz. it was performed soon after in thanhausen an der mindel for the first time. in 2001, a few weeks before xmas, i recorded my daughter sonja (aged 5 then) singing some of her favourite xmas tunes.

wonderful recordings. her singing is full of emotional power and she even hits the right notes from time to time. the interesting moments are when her voice is moving around those notes. instead of burying those recordings in the archive i came back to them soon after, because jos moers (the owner of the label meeuw muzak) was asking me to contribute to a series of xmas 7"s he does once every year. so i recorded one for him early in 2002 for 2003’s yearly event: merry merry. side 2 has a funny piece composed from a transformed ihr kinderlein kommet.

when the 7" was done i had the impression that the transformed sounds had a quality of their own, so i used them for further transformations, as well as to compose a new piece of about 15 minutes: i.k.k. – purpurscharlachrot. following my inclination for collaborative works i thought that this material could be of interest, not only for me, but also for other artists to work with. so i prepared a cd-r with the existing versions and some basic material from the piece. pieces have been submitted by dan warburton, andrew deutsch, chris halliwell, strotter inst., stephen vitiello and frisch/rainey/wehowsky.

ralf wehowsky

founder of the group p.d. (1981 renamed p16.d4) and the label wahrnehmungen (1982 renamed selektion) in 1980. p16.d4 was one of the most influential groups in experimental industrial music. they developed concepts of material exchange long before the term «remix» was even coined. for their live appearances they were equally at home in punk and no wave festivals and at the holy grails of academic avantgarde like the internationale ferienkurse für neue musik, darmstadt.since the early 1990s wehowsky works under his own name (rlw). his quiet, highly complex style of composition – based on artifacts of instrumental and electronic sound – is influential for numerous artists in the fields of electronic and improvised music. some reflections on his work can be found on tulpas, a 5cd-box-set, featuring more than 50 artists performing their versions of his pieces (jim o´rourke, brume, achim wollscheid, toshiya tsunoda, john duncan, antanas jasenka, ryoji ikeda, john watermann and others).

his recent work embraces musique concrète improvisée (with bruce russell, and johannes frisch, among others) as well as projects based on extended material exchange (i.k.k.).

staubgold 77 - kammerflimmer kollektief - "jinx" cd/lp

whispering, a laid back pop rhythm and something that sounds like an overwound gramophone – thus begins "jinx", the new album by the kammerflimmer kollektief. recorded by tobias levin at electric avenue studio, it is their sixth longplayer.

this band is still a "collective", although within the last years and extensive touring through europe, a group of three core members emerged from the original line-up: thomas weber (guitar, electronics, piano), heike aumüller (harmonium, vocals, synthesizer, percussion) and johannes frisch (double bass and percussion).

the eight songs on "jinx" leave the wide-screen cinemascope soundscapes of the previous albums behind. with their serenity, these songs sound almost like a sediment of the band's earlier approach. this becomes evident in a track like "nest" (which is reminiscent of the folk-jazz-approach of early pentangle albums), or the beautifully minimalist yet very touching country-epic "live at the cactus tree motel".

faced with this music, the usual groping for stylistic comparisons and genre attributions appears more helpless than ever. this is mainly due to the focused use of instrumental improvisation on this album. in their dialogue with the sound impulse, the musicians re-endow data folk with a body and electronic music with its metaphysics. this becomes evident in both the title track and in "both eyes tight shut", where in a repetitive swing heike aumüller's voice persistently fishes half-words from the vortex of sound particles.

in "gammler, zen & hohe berge", a tiny echo from the beat on a small wood block which is electronically slowed down, dies away. time drips through the spheres, quietly. this is not an escape into esotericism but rather the attempt at reflection and clarification, a catharsis somewhere between a constructed reality and karma.

jinx – the mythological bird that heralds bad luck - comes to you when you return from the quest for happiness in the computer game world of virtual identities. with "jinx", the kammerflimmer kollektief has created a touching soundtrack for these moments – when you leave the simulated wonderworld of commerce like "second life", when you log off your atavar and suddenly find yourself confronted with the disdainful universality of your own thinking.
