  • meditations 1 (36:30)

  • meditations 2 (28:00)
click the play button to hear an excerpt of "meditations 1"
2001 release ; the only one of these slowscan editions i’d owned prior to acquiring this batch ...

fluxus artist joe jones’s amazing array of solar-powered music-producing apparatus (performing on guitars, bells, and percussion instruments), recorded at middelburg’s de bleehsal, november, 1989 ...

fans of the automatic-music spec (esp. remko scha’s machine guitars, or even rafael toral / the maciunas ensemble’s rubber-band covered motors) w/ really need to hear this one ... once the first (36+ minute !!!) side gets going (listen to the sound-sample), there’s a remarkable array of off-time rhythmic hocketing and harmonic interplay for the rest of the side ...

comes with a pink 11” x 11” sheet w/ jonescv printed theron ; highly recommended !!!

joe jonesfluxus ain’t dead” long playing record

  • (no tracklisting)
not sure if this was also released originally by the harlekin art gallery in wiesbaden (publishers of the excellent art hats catalogue, if you ever run across a copy do check it out) or not, but this re-edition was clearly produced by someone from the contemporary art-punk/psych “xerox paste-on” bootleg scene; and that’s exactly what we get... two xeroxed sheets of paper pasted onto the front/back of an lp sleeve, with a white-label record inside...

regardless of the production values, this is an exemplary set of klang from fluxus artist joe jones, he of fluxus-lineage solar-powered music hats and the tone deaf music co. the cover photo shows him playing piano, but the embedded sound-codes are all of a robot/mechanized nature...

"the music machines of legendary fluxus artist joe jones are a paradox of prepared sounds voicing astoundingly human bursts of free-flight sonic caterwaul. why is it that a roomful of musicians cant muster the sound of these music machines? the sounds herein could make tears flow like rivers from countless communal bangs. the sounds from this tape are so rare that many historians claim they dont exist. jones orchestras were debuted on yoko onos fly and he was a curio to the beatles. joe jones left his home in tucson arizona, bought some california grass. not him? who cares. bring the noise." very highly recommended!

late 90s compilation of recordings made at paul panhuysen & co’s eindhoven het apollohuis artspace between the early 80s & its closure in 1997 ... the tracklisting reads like a veritable who’s who of sound-art and postwar experimental composition, with contributions from such mms perennials as pauline oliveros, arnold dreyblatt, takehisa kosugi, alvin lucier, richard lerman, jerry hunt, eliane radigue, jim o'rourke, rafael toral, et.al ...

something of an overlooked collection, i’d think ...
apollo records press release...
this double cd-set is the companion to the final book reporting on the activities of het apollohuis. the recordings on these cds give an idea of the music and the sound art presented in concerts at het appolohuis in the periods from 1980 through 1997. out of a total of 500 performances i chose 38, from which excerpts of varying length have been included in this anthology. these have been arranged in chronological order. the diversity of the selected pieces is characteristic of the programme of het apollohuis. only a limited number of the composers and musicians who performed at het apollohuis can be heard in brief fragments on these discs.
