korm plastics is proud to present the ninth release in the brombron series. originally a co-production between staalplaat and extrapool, it is now hosted by co-curator frans de waard. in the year 2000 frans de waard and extrapool started the brombron project. two or more musicians become artists in residence in extrapool, an arts initiative in nijmegen, the netherlands, with a fully equipped sound recording studio. these artists can work in a certain amount of time on a collaborative project; a project they always wished to do, but didn't have the time or the equipment to realize.

colley and lescalleet had never met before their grey week in nijmegen. though neither of these melancholic composers were prepared for the conflicts and compromise of this collaboration, they found common ground in rejecting the need for deep meaning or complex concepts.

46 minutes remain after harsh judgement from two perpetually dissatisfied artists.

but what does it sound like?

amidst the detritus of yard sale junk and old, broken equipment, colley and lescalleet engage in the pursuit of resurrecting the essence of sound and exposing beauty that others discard. locked away in the recording studio of geluidwerkplaats extrapool for ten days, they found music in the natural process of decay. these compositions seem weathered and eroded. rather than aiming for excitement or dazzling expression, colley and lescalleet embrace the tedium of everyday life as something beautiful and compelling. this is music with a slow absorption rate and a high toxicity.

an installation document

cassettes of animal distress cries purchased from the vast catalog produced by the johnny stewart company are presented on a table with three cassette decks. the output is sent to an array of sculptural forms spread across the gallery floor. visitors are free to select and change the tapes being played. the forms act as surrogates for the disembodied animals in distress, emitting the growls of predators and their prey recorded in the field at various times from the 1970s to the present. the forms have no eyes, only mouths whose hollowness filters the screaming frequencies and repetitions, broadcasting polyrhythms of sustained fear. implanted speakers become replacement voiceboxes for these creatures relocated to ‘civilization’, among human animals. in the process of capture, control, and taming of this pure fear, wildness is removed ever further from the wild – first by the initial recording, and then by playback into manmade space.

worth it for the wiese, yellow swans, colley, solid eye, and gerritt sides; but actually the sides by the artists i wasn’t already familiar with (oscillating innards, specifically) are pretty rad/boss to boot...

important to note that this isn’t all harsh-noise per se. there’s quite a bit of sound-research antics, some free-skronk, and more than one side-length blissed-out drone ... and for fuck’s sake, the amps for christ side is an all-out free-folk bit (with sitars no less !)

note that this weighs 4 (four) pounds !!!!

each of these contain a suite of music by six separate artists gathered around a unifying theme (in this case :: the turntable) ; first a one-minute piece, then a pair of lock-grooves ... the record itself is a feat of engineering (undoubtedly paul brekus’ work) with nary a lead-in or lead-out groove to be found, forcing the listener to essentially needle-drop until the desired effect is reached ...

haven’t seen an “art record” of this caliber in some time, with the platter housed in a lovely embossed sleeve (with eye-catching coencentric rings) ; a nice record, in every sense of the word ...

i/d/v 01 7” series

a series of 7” records of 1 minute tracks and lock grooves. focus of each volume is on one particular instrument and on the ways in which invited artists address the specifics of duration as defined by the given format. duration here is not considered as a mere quantity of time, but as the subjective relations that we establish within time’s dimension.

twelve participants to the first two releases contribute one minute-long track and two locked grooves (of 1.8 seconds at 33.1/3 rpm). each record has six 1-minute tracks and twelve locked grooves. either approached as open works of art or just as dj tools, the records in this series straightforwardly demand an active mode of listening.

the first release, i/d/v 01, engages the very idea of turntable as an instrument, as defined by a world-spanning selection of avant-garde turntablists. opening track is lary 7’s minute-long piece, excerpt from a performance in which a vinyl cutting machine was fed with the sound of the room’s ambience, in order to generate a feedback loop. the collection features tracks also by joe colley, busratch, toshio kajiwara, tommy birchett and dieb13.
