the skull defekts is a newly-formed outfit from gothenburg, sweden, which features ex-members of union carbide productions, kid commando, cortex, anticimex and lpc. the core of the group is none other than henrik rylander and joachim nordwall (both respected solo artists in their own right). among the countless guests and collaborations, they have worked with such contemporary legends as norwegian noise god lasse marhaug and japanese ex-can singer damo suzuki, with whom they toured scandinavia in early 2005.

the sound of the skull defetks ranges from intense noise to rhythmical hypnotic sounds with heavy drones. this is meaty monotonous math rock and advanced noise experiments at its best.

this is a limited edition live document from sweden's norberg festival and features henrik rylander, joachim nordwall, thomas ekelund and lasse marhaug. this is best described as a 55+ minute performance piece, which comes in hand-printed and numbered covers made by jeff mueller at dexterity press (chicago, il). late 2006 will see a full-band, full-length album on aa, a split lp with wolf eyes and russell haswell for fang bomb and another split lp with the providence avant rockers made in mexico for phono-statique (australia).

ah yes... this one’s a contender... a gorgeous milky-white split lp between current teen-titans wolf eyes (trio lineup of olson / connolly / young) and up-and-coming skandi-skorn unit skull defekts (here working as a duo of joachim “ideal / kid commando / alvars orkester” nordwall and henrik “traditional arrangements of feedback” rylander...)

wolf eyes side: mid-high oscillations encasing some fine, subtle sheet-metal/delay-pedal spazz-out... slowly the goat’s horns begin braying off in the distance before the bottom drops out and it’s all controlled feedback arc-gestures & the occasional click (are those... cd skips? on a record?) the word i would use to descrive the piece overall would have to be mellow - not one normally associated with w.e. but damn if it isn’t one of the most carefully considered bits in their discomnibus...

skull defekts side: an slown-down, almost dancehall “beat” opens the side with occassional harsh noise punctuations (in fact, if you play this at 45rpm you could probably mix it w/some bug riddims) - super minimal/repetitive & engrossing track, reminiscient of a noisier version of the first “various artists” 12” on fatcat. aside from the filtered feedback/noise, this really wouldn’t have been out of place on a mille plateaux lp ca. 1998. plus, i’m using conjecture to glom that the s.d. title is a loose lucier reference, and that’s never a bad signifier...

yes, it’s limited. yes, the wolf eyes side is good, especially if you’re feel the not-just-totally-full-on-harsh-noise phase they’re currently going through. yes the s.d. side is very good. yes, i have a good amount of copies; probably enough to last through the end of the summer (but these days; i’m getting less and less sure of my “predictive buying” abilities - 47 copies sold of the neon gallery marclay lp in one week anyone?)

2006 release ; a great bit of pan-generational magic from elgaland-vargaland’s leif elggren and sweden’s henrik rylander ... some of this feels like pita’s “get out” (pretty, plundered orchestral music run through the harsh-noise / distortion ringer) only with a certain text-sound angle (elggren’s voice, i’m assuming, is all but buried under a wall of processing) ...

rylander & elggren are kings of uneasy listening and chaos! but hidden within is beauty. this is a powerful experience of sound and two of sweden's most uncomfortable artists...

henrik rylander (ex-union carbide productions, also active in the skull defekts and leif elggren (krev, firework edition and the sons of god) at spire live in masthuggskyrkan. curated by mike harding of touch. part of gothenburg art sounds 2005. this long piece was executed at an extreme volume and it was seriously painful to experience the damned thing! but here it has mysteriously become very listenable and pulsatingly rhythmical. it is a truly powerful piece by two of swedens finest cutting age sound artists. the cd also features two remixes by the idealst and sound terrorist c.p.u.

about the artists:

henrik rylander is a gothenburg-based sound and visual artist working in the fields of noise, intense avant garde rock and photography. he was the drummer of the infamous and retarded garage rock band union carbide productions and is currently in the newly formed primal rock band the skull defekts. his photography is clinical and documentative, and as clinical is his feedback solo works - as heard on the "traditional arrangements of feedback" album for ideal.

leif elggren is based in stockholm and king of elgaland-vargaland together with cm von hausswolff, and is running the firework edition for the most brave swedish sound art on tasty cd's and vinyl and is also publishing beautiful books and prints. his own works are extremely focused and is ciruclating around themes as power, religion, life & death. together with kent tankred he is one of the sons of god, a great performance and noise duo.

the ass galaxy is the unholy creative output of ideal's the idealist (ex-kid commando, also in alvars orkester and the skull defekts) and johannes "burner" heldén who is a sound and visual artist and a science fiction poet with his body covered with satellites and messages to not-yet-discovered civilisations. this is pure filth, a slow distorted beat, slightly out of rhythm, with a few samplings thrown in and a viking-style battle-melody. if aliens would find this as a good example of human culture - they would kill us all.

the black hand is the first part of a trilogy on black vinyl investigating the power of deep drone and extreme sound and the beast that is creativity and sound. the beast in man should be exercised, not excorsized. the black hand is like something covering your face. it's getting hard to breathe, man. visions are blurry. but the sound is razorsharp and clear.

the skull defekts were for this recording henrik rylander on no-input mixing desk and feedback units and joachim nordwall on drone machine and effects. cover design by infamous artist fredrik söderberg.

jan svensson (frak, borft records) and joachim nordwall (skull defekts, ideal recordings) have been recording and performing as alvars orkester since the late 80's and have amassed a modest discography in that time, always releasing choice cuts focused on quality, not quantity, in contrast to many of their contemporaries. jan and joachim's versatility has been inspirational around these parts, both of them moving around dance music templates, abstract and cold electronics, drone, noise, rock, ect, all things dear to us, with such ease, it's hard not to be impressed.

on 'profess' alvars orkester take their sound one step further and deliver an impressive song cycle of psychedelic industrial electronic music. throbbing analog synths and hi frequency bent electronics lay the base for this pyscho spiritual journey, filled with fear. the sense of urgency, claustrophobia and paranoia are prevalent throughout giving you moments of release, but only briefly as the derangement begins to take hold yet again. no one chord minor triad pad 'zones' here, not for the weak of heart - if you can stomach it, strap in and get fucked.

edition of 100: pro-dubbed on black type ii high bias cassettes with 2-panel j card>, silkscreened shells & shrink-wrapping.

for the recording, henrik rylander and joachim nordwall of drone operators the skull defekts got together with the legendary performance and noise duo the sons of god - consisting of conceptual artist and self-proclaimed king of the kingdoms of elgaland-vargaland leif elggren and electro-acoustic sound artist kent tankred. the place for the meeting was rylander's studio dental and the album was received in one night. the process developed immediately and there was no struggle to find a common idea of sound. rylander and nordwall on no-input mixing desk and analog synths and elggren and tankred on amplified metallic rakes, an old fan and fx. something was caught on tape. that something is what you are now listening to.
