anomalous press release...

"three aural interpretations of a drawing by eric lanzillotta" 7" ep
anomalous records nom28

limited edition of 250 copies pressed on clear vinyl and packaged in double-sided 14.5" by 10.5" poster sleeve.

this 33 rpm ep include three sound artists playing a drawing by eric lanzillotta. each artist has a unique, though abstract take on the drawing, which is included in the inside of the poster sleeve. the sounds include the calm physical motions of jeph jerman, the static activity of leif elggren and noise music of ralf wehowsky (sounding a bit like p16.d4 here).

jeph jerman gained attention under the name hands to, but has created his most refined work under his own name. he performs mostly with natural objects (stones, plant parts, feathers, etc) and has collaborated regularly with wally shoup, greg davis, sean meehan, tim barnes, mike shannon, dave knott, eric lunde, and many others. he has had several previous releases on anomalous records, and a new cd of his work will be released by little enjoyer this year.

leif elggren is a pioneering sound, performance, book and installation artist from sweden, as well one of the two kings of elgaland-vargaland. in the last 30 years, he has released a great deal of material on labels such as radium 226.05, anckarström, flykingen, ash international, korm plastics, some, absurd, meeuw muzak, kning disk, ideal recordings, touch and his own firework edition, which has also published many of his book works, such as the legendary "experiment with dreams" done in collaboration with thomas liljenberg.

ralf wehowsky started making music in the neue deutsch welle period of germany history with his band p.d., which later became the group p16.d4. since the dissolution of these groups, he has been recorded largely as a solo artist, though in truth always incorporating collaborations with various friends. over the years he has worked with andrew chalk, bernhard günter, kevin drumm, lionel marchetti, bruce russell, david grubbs, jim o'rourke, and many others.

jeph jermantrees & shrubs - 2000” compact disc recordable

  • (29:39)
autumn press release...
when i first moved to cottonwood in 1999, i spent a lot of time walking around with my recorder, sampling the sonic surroundings. i was surprised at the difference in sonority compared to seattle, where i previously lived. the dryness here lent everything a crispness and fragility that i had forgotten. i experimented a lot with contact mics and my stereo cassette recorder, spacing the mics far apart and attaching them to two (or more) things, mostly plants. these recordings are from my yard, and include a catclaw acacia and several other plants which i've forgotten now. the recorder i used would not allow me to monitor the recording as it happened (who designs these things?!?!?!), so i had to wait until it was over to hear it. i am often amazed at the wide array of sounds and timbres registered by these cheap devices. jeph jermanarrastre” c42 cassette

  • arrastre 8

  • arrastre 9
december 2010 release ; it’s been a good long while since we’ve had anything new by the now-arizona-based composer jeph jerman, so the arrival of this set of humming, hysteresis-laden metal-resonance studies is a major event ...

two sides of multi-trackedbowed pot lids” that sound like a frozen gamelan orchestra buried deep underground in the australian outback ...
autumn press release...

ar022
jeph jerman - arrastre cassette (c42)

release date: december 2010
150 copies
professionally duplicated cassette with laser printed j-card

we have a set of surprisingly resonant pot lids in our kitchen, which i've used in various recordings in the past and one night while doing the dishes i had the idea to try playing them in the manner of tibetan singing bowls, by dragging a thick wooden dowel around their rims. i found that with a little practice this worked well, so i made a multi-track recording of four of them. i then, as i am want to do, became obsessed with this idea, buying up piles of pot lids from local second-hand shops and making more recordings, some using as many as ten different lids.

after two months of this activity i was left with over two hours of recordings of resonant metal drones, which i enjoy so much that i thought i'd share them all. comprising nine pieces of music ranging in length from 5 to 20 minutes, these recordings are available on three separate releases, on three different formats: a full-length vinyl record, a 45 minute cd-r and a 40 minute cassette.

arrastre is the spanish word for drag, and also the name of a 19th century mining apparatus, wherein large boulders were drug around an ore-filled pit by means of a large spindle and arm, driven by pack animals.

this cassette release is 1/3 of the arrastre triptych.

crouton (usa) #crouton 38 dvd

jeph jerman / jon muellernodes and anti-nodes” digital versatile disc and audio file

  • dvd: nodes and anti-nodes

  • audio file: nodes and anti-nodes
crouton press release...
crouton no.38
jeph jerman and jon mueller
nodes and anti-nodes
dvd + audio file

after years of working with sound and vibrations, and documenting prepared and unprepared situations on recordings, jeph jerman and jon mueller now present a tapestry of visualizations to these sounds with ‘nodes and anti-nodes.’ the dvd shows close-up views of the subtle actions in vibrating bodies, both audible and not. these scenes are glimpses into situations that ernst chladni and hans jenny might have pursued in a more scientific direction. but for the lay viewer, it’s simply interesting to watch the real-time relationship between sound and material, and the juxtaposition of the results of natural movements paired with absolute silence. for those that would enjoy listening to the audio portion on the go, an individual mp3 file of the audio can be pulled from the disc.

the dvd is packaged in a 7 letterpressed and numbered chip board case and is limited to an edition of 300 copies.

about jeph jerman:

began playing drums in 1972 at the age of 13. spent my formative years in various bar bands while simultaneously seeking out more adventurous people to make more adventurous music. formed/joined a myriad of ensembles to that end, including: big joey, blowhole, city of worms etc. in the mid ’90’s i moved to seattle wa and became involved with the local improvised music community, playing with just about everyone. at some point i began to deconstruct my drum kit, ending up with a pile of sonorous things that i gradually replaced with stones, shells, sticks and feathers. i continue to investigate various ways of making/capturing sound and to document my efforts.

about jon mueller:

jon mueller has been an active drummer and percussionist since the mid-80s. whether utilizing bombastic minimalism, dense interplay, or electroacoustic practices, his approach focuses on a physical dialog between situation and material. he has been featured on numerous recordings, and has performed throughout the u.s., japan, and europe.

i went through a great deal of effort in order to acquire the entire discography of the köln-based quiet artworks label. active from the late 80s through the early 90s, qa relelased, imohowiqv, some of the finer sub-conscious listening platters of the era (and beyond). most records consist of side-long tonal drones with just the slightest nuance-shifting imaginable, really quite sublime.

carsten schulz & mr. hajsch (real identity?) were of course the brains behind said braun. and here is the last item they laid claim to (publicly, at least), a beautiful collection of slow-motion studies for diverse instrumentation ...
sonig press release...

hajsch: organ, synthesizers, guitars, field-recordings, feedback, window shades, percussion, concrete sounds, melodica, vocoder.
c-schulz: harmonium, accordion, piano, clarinet, window shades, radio, percussion, concrete sounds.

monika westphal: field-recording on 1 and 9, fire on 6.
jeph jerman: field-recording on 5.
daisuke suzuki: field-recording on 4, bricks on 6.
andrä klaukien: window shades on 9.
hein bruehl: recording of voices on 8.

c-schulz and hajsch are no strangers to the international experimental music scene, having spent the last ten years developing "the cologne sound." this their latest recording is one of depth and daring with clearly structured arrangements, clever instrumentation and striking dynamics. in the vein of zoviet france, coil and nurse with wound. acoustic instruments, field recordings, concrete sounds. surprisingly deep music.

anomalous press release...
"an uncommon nature" lp

coinciding with the 10th anniversary of anomalous records' existence, we are releasing a compilation album based around recordings from the outdoors, and featuring artists we release or are going to in the near future. featured on this lp are new recordings from: jeph jerman, mirror, agog, climax golden twins, jonathan coleclough, mike shannon, monos, richard lerman, and dave knott. throughout the packaging, and on four enclosed postcards, are beautiful black and white photographs taken by rachael jackson in the olympic national park in washington state.

while unified by a common theme, the tracks are quite varied including desert contact mic recordings of rain and wind on a tree [jeph jerman], processed sounds of a gate [jonathan coleclough], erhu played on a beach [mike shannon], mysterious singing 'water babies' [agog], a mixture of wild celery stalks, tundra grass, a cord made from sinew, a whalebone roof support and the seals [richard lerman], and the straight recording of an approaching thunderstorm [dave knott].

this attention to detail in audio is matched by the close up photographs of fungi, dripping sap, and trees which surrounds it.

2003 release ; this is... by far... the most interesting record-object i’ve been able to stock via mms thusfar (buddha machine :: ha!) ... what ships as two cds and a three-inch cd-rom inside a resealable plastic display-bag (left) in fact opens up to be an inflatable möbius-strip / objét d’art that you assemble and inflate yourself (with the included red straw no less), then display prominently on your mantlepiece ... voila ::

on top of all that, the two audio-discs are rife with excellent, exclusive material from a who’s who of the international sound-art scene ... plus the 3” cd-rom explains the project in more detail and contains artist bios & links & whatnot ... just plain amazing ... no collection should be without !!!

2004 release ; first global transmission from the kuala lumpur-based “experimental musicians and artists co-operative malaysia” , whose various members contribute 5 of the 25 tracks herein ...

the other 20 are from a who’s who of the int’l sound-research circuit and are of phenomenally high quality (the exoticity of the label’s point of origin must have been a contributing factor in getting all involved to contribute vital examples of their work instead of 2nd-tier comp-track dreck) ...

what i’m finding the most enjoyable about this set is the curatorial aspect ... the wide variety of approaches and fidelities on display somehow all blur boundaries in a highly listenable fashion (i.e. instead of segueing the work of like-minded auteurs into dovetail-like situations, the digital pieces morph into the analog into the lo-fi into the composed into the improvised ... many labels could learn volumes from the sequencing of this record alone), making this amongst the first comps to have a “soul”, so to speak...

completely essential listening, one of my favorite comps from recent times ...
