oddly, what i’m reminded of the most are charlie nothing’s spacious side-long extrapolations, albeit a&a’ed here by tons & processing (mostly harmonizer & tape / looping) & rhys’ woozy, lip / tongue heavy embouchures ...

neat stuff, nice to hear a full albumsworth of this side of rhys’ musical personality, which has lain dormant since the late 90’s (when he dropped a 12” of similar works for ... ninja tune i believe) ...

rhys chatham has trail-blazed a course through late 20th century music, equally aplomb in post-minimalist composition as he is in punk. not since roebling laid his span across the east river has there been an artist who builds bridges in both how we hear music and how we can appreciate art. his latest album, outdoor spell, is a further document in that direction. here has has eschewed 100 guitars, or even himself playing a single guitar, for the trumpet and voice, both electrified and dry. it is an earthquake island for the 21st century, tugging at the corners of new ideas, taking in forms endemic to a shared imagination and renewing the beauty there.

january 2009 release ; lovely set featuring the guitar & electronics duo of christian malfray & pierre faure, first together by themselves (a short static acoustic guitar-strum intro, then a superb elongated electric guitar & processing suite that ends in a lock groove) followed by a collaboration with storied french improvising guitarist jean-marc montera (whose “mmmr” collaboration with loren connors, thurston & lee was a highlight of the late-90s free-guitar conflux - here the junction of his sandy bull-esque raga lines & malfray / faure’s bleep-heavy digital accents hits a very sweet spot) ...

this art-gallery edition features a one-sided lp (oddly, longer than some double-sided ones !!!) housed in a picture-disc sleeve ... a bit on the pricey side, yes, but considering the edition & the quality of sound on offer herein ... no complaints from my end. highly recommended !!!

two tracks of nappe (pierre faure also member of sun stabbed and christian malfray) and another one in collaboration with jean marc montera (collaborator with fred frith, barre phillips, loren mazzacane connors, thurston moore, lee ranaldo, louis sclavis, michel doneda, …).

two tracks of minimal music played with guitars and electronics that freeze the sound in an infinite time and one track of experimental raga blues with jean marc montera playing the acoustic 12 strings guitar that show a different way of playing.

brown vinyl, lock groove, limited to 150 copies.
