jazzkammerpulse” compact disc

bottrop-boy press release...
jazzkammer
pulse
cd / b-boy 017

jazzkammer are lasse marhaug and john hegre from norway. together they have been making music as jazzkammer since 1998. past releases include timex, rolex (a remix album), pancakes and a live album with merzbow. jazzkammer are relentless sound explorers with no set style or specific 'sound' - they move swiftly from hardcore overload electronics and sonic freakouts to lowercase soundscapes and location recordings. once described as 'sonic architects', marhaug and hegre insist they are merely trying to make 'good music'.

pulse was recorded in singapore during the sars-crisis in april of 2003. it was inspired by a theatre piece of the same title that they were working on at the same time, though the music on the cd does not resemble that of the play. the album pulse is a single beautiful 32-minute piece; its basic structure is a drifting electronic drone that slowly unfolds and mutates, with subtle layers of location recordings and vinyl-static adding color and depth. like pancakes, pulse has a cinematic feel to it, a feeling that is further enhanced by the photos of acclaimed photographer yuen chee wai that grace the cover and 12-page booklet.

carbon (usa) #cr 092 cd

frode gjerstad / lasse marhaugred edge” compact disc

  • a dry well
  • red edge
  • falling down
  • the first rule
this is the same disc as the previously stocked gb 55 (gameboy), just got it from a different source/label!...

ah, my old friend the co-release. it’s been a few years (last one i can remember was that nels cline single that was released by a few coley-orbit orgs back in the mid 90s). this one by no less than 5 labels (breathmint, carbon, gameboy, little mafia, and sunship). listed here as a gameboy release as, well, these copies are from mike and that’s the end of that...

sonically... gjerstad’s rifling through some sort of duck-call / tortured emperor-penguin real-book, lasse’s all rumble-pit & hades-brim/sampled fireworks (laptop? i assume he’s playing a laptop computer...).

actions herein are separate, hardly equal, yet compellingly meshed into a single sound-form. a-grade contemporary electro-acoustic improv...
carbon press release...
oh man. must be that these norwegeians get bored out of their minds inwinter. something keeps them rocking out an insane number of releases.

these two boys have joined forces before, but that doesn't mean you've heard anything like this. gjerstad unleashes free noise flotation saxophone licks from somewhere between his lips and his lungs. marhaug backs him up with electronics that range from glitch-like to to lo-fi to just straight rumbling. he manages to run all over the place, but frode's overpowering sax (and his consistency with it) keeps him in line.

co-released with carbon, sunship and breathmint. first gameboy disc to come all shrinkwrapped and fancy-like. it even has an anti-theft device so if you try and lift it from the virgin megastore, you are so busted.

john hegrecolors don’t clash” compact disc

[017] john hegre "colors don't clash" cd

finally, here it is! an album we’ve been waiting for since starting the label a few years ago and it was worth waiting every minute. while maintaining a busy release and tour schedule with jazzkammer (now called jazkamer, a duo with lasse marhaug) which recently included their new glorious metal album for smalltown supersound (aptly titled „metal music machine“), the „panic“ cd on the bottrop-boy label and concerts all over the world (including south america, south east asia, japan, etc.), his marvellous „ballads“ duo album with maja ratkje on dekorder and countless other collaborative projects, he has been working on his solo debut album whenever time allowed.

returning to his original instrument the electric guitar, hegre has produced an extremely diverse album mutating from hypnotic computer-loop drones to some glorious free analogue noise, from abstract banjo-like sketches to thick washes of sludgy doom metal and roaring noise rock, from divine electroacoustic sounds to otherworldly country-esque and classical guitar picking, all within one track, and often all at once, with small and simple melodies lurking within huge drifts of sound. and not one element sounds out of place here, it’s rather like the collages of seemingly inappropriate bits and pieces create a totally unique surreal and creepy atmosphere. dozens of small details suddenly appear from nowhere, transforming even the most brutal noise attacks into complex textural arrangements, making this the most essential guitar album of the year.

the title? it´s a quotation from the late philip charles lithman aka snakefinger. at the end of an interview for the july number of the norwegian music magazine puls in 1987 he was asked if he had any final message for the norwegian people, and he did, his message was "colors don´t clash, don´t worry they never do". he died of a heart attack on july 1st, same day as his single "there´s no justice in life" was released.

[015] john hegre / maja ratkje "ballads" cd

"ballads" ist the first collaborative album by two key figures of the norwegian noise, improv, experimental, whatever-you-call-it music scene. anyone expecting a rackety wall of distorted feedback guitars and voices will be gently surprised though by the sparse and intimate sketches to be found on this wonderful record. songs are stripped down to their raw bones using only the most essential elements to reveal the soul behind every single sound. superfluous effects seem to be completely absent, creating an open space for miniscule details, always ready to implode into noisier tracks such as "private matter". the album culminates in "hammock moods", a quietly mesmerizing epic finale with maja ratkje humming a beautiful melody over hegre's gorgeous near-psychedelic guitar playing. let's all hope for a sequel to this album!

maja ratkje is a member of spunk (rune grammofon) and noise duo fe-mail. her solo album "voice" (produced in collaboration with jazzkammer) got an award of distinction at prix ars electronica in 2003. in 2001 she was the first composer ever to receive the arne nordheim distinction award. she has collaborated with jaap blonk, ikue mori, otomo yoshihide, wolf eyes, matmos, lasse marhaug, jason forrest, kim hiortoy, ulver and many others.

john hegre is a member of jazzkammer / jazkamer (smalltown supersound), kaptein kaliber, golden serenades, new boiling near the fjords (with members of alog) and others. his first solo 3"cd came out on dekorder in 2003. jazkamer will release their aptly titled new album "metal music machine" in spring 2006 and hegre is working on an as yet untitled solo album for dekorder.

“fifth time i've worked with lasse on a release and third time with john hegre, but the first time with their long-standing jaz(z)kam(m)er duo. this disc documents the highlights of their 2004 us tour - both on and off stage. abrasive guitar-driven noise augmented with audience banter and merch booth ponderings as the mics continue to run.”

"one eye and watching"
melk 002 - 7"

lasse marhaug should be known to all fans of leftfield electronic music and noise by now. he has been active on the international tape/noise scene for over 10 years, with a production of frightening proportions counting over a 100 releases as solo artist or collaborator. t's meaningless to compare lasse marhaugs music to others; his musical identity is too strong, he has his own style. lasse marhaug's music is never out of focus, and always keeps you on the edge of your chair; listening!

pica disk press release...

jazzkammer: peanuts

pica023. cd. released september 2010.

"peanuts" is a mixture of location recordings and percussion, and can be seen as a continuation of the music jazzkammer explored on the albums "timex" (2000) and "pancakes" (2002); carefully constructed transparent sound-surfaces. one track also features turntable surface crackle, which could bring the listener's thoughts back to the "turntable surface fireball" lp (2001). although "peanuts" is not a noise record, it could hardly be called ambient music. it might work well as background listening, but listen carefully and realize the many details in the music. strangely jazzkammer's 'quiet' albums have previously been described as their most difficult. hegre and marhaug are rather puzzled about this themselves, and hope that "peanuts" will make its listeners feeling enlightened and joyful.

the "peanuts" cover photographs are by spanish photographer valeria picerno.

  • golden serenades - evening fix

[seger 18]
testicle hazard / golden serenades
morning star / evening fix
lp

please get ready for a true heavy weight team-up on this split lp. testicle hazard (lasse marhaug + tommi keränen) deliver a side-long orgy of blistering fuzzed-out heaviness. this is a duo that has very quickly proved that they are indeed capable of producing some truly ear-shattering noise bliss - two noise maestros doing what they love and live for, and you can feel privileged to indulge in the result of their hard work.

golden serenades (john hegre + jørgen træen) immediately locks into a devastating groove (for lack of a more suitable term), and a terribly convincing assault of metal clattering and a non-stop moving mass of forceful sonic onslaught of the highest order. when these norwegian lads team up, you can expect nothing less than noise nirvana. if you have yet to experience the thrill of golden serenades, this is where you get *on*.

soundbites from john hegre and lasse marhaug (and a little help from alexander rishaug), fresh from their collaboration with merzbow...
tonschacht press release...
artist: jazzkammer
title: knitter
format: 7"
cat #: tons013

sämtliche musik von jazzkammer 2001.
zusätliche sounds auf seite eins von alexander rishaug.

knitter is the first 7" from this norwegian duo - guitarist, improviser and composer john hegre (also in der brief) and lasse marhaug, one of the most productive musicians in the international noise/experimental underground of the last 10 years (also in del and owner of the jazzassin records label) – this time with alexander rishaug who already participated on the last jazzkammer– longplayer "pancakes" (smalltown supersound).

this swedish label also released rolex, a remix-album of their first two cds with contributions by merzbow, thurston moore, pimmon and mayn others. jazzkammer combines timbre sound textures, drones, chrashing noise, digitalia, field recordings, turntables, static electric atmospheres, samplers sine waves and location recordings, all used in free improvisation to create fragmented, eclectic and relentless yet focused and massive collages. a-sia might remind you of mixture between the hi-speed electronics of belgian irregularities scratch pet land and the microsound-turntablism like otomo yoshihide or martin ttreault, b-sia begins like pop defined by the tochnit aleph crew, but slowly between layers of distortions there rise sweet, fenneszian melody as if they were re-arranged by rudolf e.ber.
