the first, and highly likely, the only live date from the plotkin (khanate) / runhild (thorr’s hammer) / wyskida (khanate) trio. multicamera live footage from 2006 hydrahead cmj showcase in nyc. edited and prepped for consumption by mr plotkin. comes housed in a ? fold heavy matte stock cover adorned with paintings from stephen kasner’s reckless mind dropped into a 10mil. custom sized pvc outer sleeve. all text on outer and inner covers silkscreen in metallic silver by broken presses. mirror faced pit art dvd comes slipped inside a hand stamped black sleeve.

pressing of 500 copies.

james plotkin and brent gutzeit met in japan in 1994. plotkin was touring with scorn, gutzeit was living in tokyo. they began a collaborative project.

plotkin recorded a guitar track, gutzeit destroyed it and rebuilt it.
gutzeit used handmade instruments, boom box, stereo and four-track tape deck to create 5 different tracks.
plotkin remixed those tracks and sent gutzeit 40 minutes of music.
gutzeit did another round of mixes, burned them to cdr and sent them to plotkin.
by that time gutzeit had moved to chicago.
plotkin mixed more tracks.

the final round of mixes ended up in kranky's hands in the fall of 1998. each "remix" that became mosquito dream took a year to complete. mosquito dream is expansive yet attentive to details, reverberant but granular.

this is the first collaboration between these two well known sound mainipulators. a peripheral blur is well named: something always seems to appear briefly at the borders of auditory perception.

mark spybey contributed toy sounds and vocals as source material while james plotkin used guitars. sounds shift focus and density in a way that escapes exact definition and encourages listening investment.

james plotkin began his musical career as the guitarist for metal band old with vocalist alan dubin. the two would cross paths again under the guise of khanate. in the interim plotkin would become involved in projects ranging from guitar bent soundscape and grind to free improvisation. his body of work spans format and label, recording for avant, hydra head, asphodel, earache, southern lord and archive among others. whether writing, performing, or producing, his output has been invariably unique and extreme.

kurtlanmak/damascus is no exception. recorded live in new york and buenos aires respectively the tracks show a side of james plotkin rarely seen. that of the solo artist. plotkin utilizes two distinct setups for each performance and channels the sound of acoustic instrumentation through the hum of electronic sorcery.

released on utech records [022] as kurtlanmak in the fall of last year, the limited cdr was sold at dates on the khanate "it's cold when birds fall from the sky" tour. the music on this edition has been remastered and the packaging expanded. a second, unreleased recording from argentina is added to complete the disk.
