black magic disco (mciaa and jackie-o motherfucker) : 's/t'
2 lp set (in luxurious gatefold sleeve, incl. poster)

black magic disco is the new all-star band featuring tom greenwood (jackie-o motherfucker), maurizio & roberto opalio (my cat is an alien) and ramona ponzini (painting petals on planet ghost, praxinoscope). the project was born out of an idea from tom greenwood, founder leader of the avant-folk-blues ensemble jackie-o motherfucker, who invited maurizio and roberto opalio, aka the italian improv duo my cat is an alien (mciaa), and their close collaborator ramona ponzini (also involved with the two brothers in the projects named painting petals on planet ghost and praxinoscope, as well as in the new collaboration with z'ev) to perform with him for two months of touring throughout all europe in may/ june 2005. as one can imagine, the result was killer.

the music which came out of the live performances was totally explosive, combining ramona's japanese vocals & hypnotic chimes with greenwood's psych-blues guitar attitude & wild turntablism, over mciaa's alien cosmic flux of electric guitars, space toys & percussions, creating a still unheard mixture of sounds unifying archaic & post-modern, western & eastern, sky & earth. this debut cd represents a unique chance to experience almost 80 minutes of that pure and magic live action, divided in four long tracks taken from the original live recordings. black magic disco's logo comes from the pencil of roberto opalio; the gatefold jacket cd artwork, curated by mciaa contains some band photos taken during the live performances included in the record.

2005 release ; features the “big band” lineup of jomf (w/ adam “white rainbow” forkner, tara jane o’neil, josh “magneticring” stevenson, honey “valet” owens, theo agnell, tom greenwood, etc ...)
atp/recordings press release...
this is the highly-anticipated fifth full-length jomf release, their first in three years.

jackie-o motherfucker was formed in 1994 by tom greenwood and nester bucket layering guitars and sax over hand-cut analog tape loops and collage, collections of found sound, field recordings, cut-up classic rock, hip-hop beats and 4-tracked drones. assembled and processed, the band rehearsed often in the basement of an abandoned drug store on mississippi st. in north portland. the first live performances featured an amplified reel-to-reel tape machine and electric guitar while additions of live percussion, 8-track tapes, alto sax, and a turntable filled out the sound. after a us/european tour in the late summer of 2003 the east coast configuration of jomf temporarily dissolved, with members returning to brooklyn and montreal.

the group re-assembled in portland and recording sessions began for flags of the sacred harp. honey owens returned to working with the group again, having departed after fig. 5 to work with her other group nudge. the new configuration also includes guitarist adam forkner (yume bitsu, white rainbow, devendra banhart).

over a year in the making, flags of the sacred harp displays the group's patient and evolved songwriting style with historic references to american blues and hymns. one of the most focused and sublime releases from jackie-o motherfucker, the release contains songs that are all manifestations, mutations and re-interpretations of old blues and gospel, specifically from an old hymnal called "the sacred harp." three lush, beautiful vocal arrangements on each side of a 17-minute soaring instrumental making a total of 7 songs unfolding over 70+ minutes.

flags of the sacred harp is an epic recording documenting the group's maturing skills in writing, arranging and production and is a timeless de-construction of american music.

reissue of jackie-o-motherfucker's 2001 liberation, originally released on road cone

this album was highly acclaimed for its superior production, and marks the band's slow move towards more song-oriented and loosely-composed material. it's a dreamier, organic, more transitional record that proudly displays jackie-o's emotional sophistication and ever-expansive chops.

multi-intrumentalists tom greenwood and jef brown and various jackie-o collective members use vibraphone, fiddle, organ, turntables, sitar and reed to augment and illustrate a variant cacaphony, even dipping into free-jazz territory. liberation picks up where fig. 5 left off, except with more lone, anthemic post-rock simultaneously invoking elements of spaceman 3, can, dirty three, derek bailey, the art ensemble of chicago and amon düül.

far more hazy than their previous releases, liberation cemented the band as an ever-revolving cast of collaborators willing to participate in a free-flowing experiment in free-jazz, folk, psych-rock, post-rock, and distorted americana.

this is the 2003 atp recordings 2cd reissue of the masterful wow, originally released in 2000 on fisheye (uk) and the magick fire music originally released in 1999 on ecstatic peace! (us).

since 1994, jackie-o-motherfucker have been a spiraling collective, inspired by an impossibly diverse array of sound and vision -- free jazz and rock, graffiti, space rock, folk music, xerox art, text/sound art, hip-hop, performance and video art, electronic and primitive music, you name it. these two releases paired together exemplify the best of jackie-o's explosive sprawl and electric bombast. textured horns, acid guitars, effects buzz, violins, ambient noodling, flutes, turntables and saxophones, jackie-o bring out all the stops for a combination of releases that truly exemplifies the true nature of their whirling, rotating 10-member miasma.

2007 release ; believe this is still the most recent album from this pdx group led by tom greenwood, produced by white rainbow’s adam forkner & featuring guest-vocals from evainca oresalens ...

i’ve never been too much of a fan of these guys, but this has some really great moments, from the straight-up space-rock of the opening “sing” to the free-form electro-acoustic collage of “we are / channel zero(listen to the sound-sample) ...
textile press release...
jomf - "valley of fire"

valley of fire contains 3 brand new finely crafted songs on side one, and on side two, a 20 minute classic psychedelic, dirt road journey the record represents two equally facinating aspects of jomf sonwriting, and musical arrangement. over the years, jackie-o motherfucker have spent equal time writing and arranging classic american folk and blues, and long, free-form compositions, drawing comparisons to 1960’s and 70s ensembles like ash ra tempel, amon düül, amm, faust, can, and the art ensemble of chicago, while at the same time, developing a song crafting style that has drawn on a musical language passed down through generations.

from classic arrangements of traditional spirituals, and work songs from the american south, “go down old hanah”, “amazing grace(fig. 5) to modern arrangements of greenwich village folk from the 1960’s, “somethings on your mind” - dino valente / karen dalton (liberation), to completely original jomf classics “everyday”, and “hey! mr. sky(change, flags....) jackie-o motherfucker have trawled the dusty corners of history, and absorbed the languages of past generations, twisting the elements to form a new style which has been appropriated by musicians all over the world.

valley of fire begins with “sing” an original composition with vocals by eva salens (inca ore) recorded in charlottesville virginia, written in collaboration with a local street preacher, the song addresses the importance of the individual voice, rising above a rotten political structure ...lift up your voice and sing....!

track two, titled “valley of fire”, another jomf original composition, was recorded in leeds, england over the winter of 2006, with further production in portland by adam forkner.

track three, is a jomf arrangement of a beach boys song called “the tree” from their lonesome and wasted record, “surf’s up”. also recorded in leeds england, in the living room of lauren naylor, with further production in portland by adam forkner. it is an incredibly dark and minimal arrangement of the song, with an awesome vocal contribution from forkner.

side two is a side long composition titled “we are” with vocals by eva salens and tom greenwood, and in typical jomf style, takes the listener on a lysergic ride through the misty atmosphere...

valley of fire picks up on the trail of flags of the sacred harp, and wanders down a similar path, adding elements of krautrock, and classic west-coast american production to create an incredible, original album.

the cover of valley of fire is an original watercolor painting by american artist jo jackson, who creates mystical paintings, and shows her work around the world.

uzu audio press release...
jackie-o motherfucker - assignment: jackie-o motherfucker (aka freaker pipe) - lp
(uzu001/usound35)

what started out as an effort to issue some live recordings from the fig. 5/liberation era slowly turned into what is the most recent live recordings made available. the free jazz tinged freak-outs you were going to hear have been shelved so we could bring you these three swirling moments in time. almost an entirely different line up on this jackie-o than previous releases, tom greenwood brings along nick bindeman, danny sasaki, and eva salens, joined by fellow sonic adventurers, jessica rylan (aka can't) & corey fogel (gowns) on one track, while on the last track they are joined in italy by the moglass and my cat is an alien.

the entire first side features a séance sure to bring out all the ghosts in your home as the percussion builds and the guitars, synths, and saxophone create a shimmering, sparse back drop for the spirits to frolic to. while the second hints at the jomf of yester year with a moaning trombone, a noodling blues tinged guitar and the cries of a lone saxophone on the first track. and to close it all off a dense dreamy endless mess of drones, moans, bells and such recorded in italy.

released in conjunction with tom greenwood's u-sound archive, this lp is one time pressing of 1000 copies into heavy 180 gram vinyl and enclosed in a custom gatefold jacket with four color printing, hand screened right here in the great white north.
