as the final finger in the fist, irr.app(ext.) de.emp.has.(ize) the musical aspect of the source material, instead punching it down to its more spacial, raw and cavernous aspects. the textural shifts are long and building. the fractured fallouts reduce everything to a quietly smoldering hollow...like your devastated heart!

a little lost
cd / b-boy 013

icelandic musician (now based in hannover, germany) sigtryggur berg sigmarsson has been a longtime member of the band stilluppsteypa. since some time he has been releasing solo works as well, with albums on trente oiseaux, ers and fire inc. this is his new solo album, and the best example of the variety of his musical talent. a little lost contains three lengthy tracks, one beautiful piece that gets close in spirit to ambient, one collage piece using amongst else spoken word and a third track which is maybe closest to the familiar sound of stilluppsteypa, on which he got help from irr.app.(ext.).

irr. app. (ext.)
cosmic superimposition
e.i.e cd eie006

cosmic superimposition is the second installment to a planned trilogy of irr. app. (ext.) productions that draw from the philosophical ruminations of wilhelm reich. the first album in this trilogy is ozeanische gefühle, which had been published by the helen scarsdale agency back in 2004. this earlier album is a majestic convergence of a multiplicity of crepuscular sounds and shadowy drones. using this strategy of dynamic confluence, irr. app. (ext.) presents cosmic superimposition to once again infer a particular slant upon reichian logic. the title of this album is also a title to one of reich's treatises upon a cosmological interconnectivity. in particular for this book, reich argued how the superimposition of multiple energies (whether that be meteorological, astrophysical, psychological, sexual, or what not) is the common functioning principle throughout the natural world.

on the single 45 minute track that comprises cosmis superimposition, irr. app. (ext.) presents a revolving set of organic fluctuations that wax and wane in accordance to a well-tuned internal logic. glassine ambient passages of processed environmental noise slide into the sustained harmonics of bowed metals which in turn couples with the off-kilter phase pattern of an exhaust fan whose motor is not quite properly aligned. all the while gurgles from streams, clatter from subterranean actions, singing bowl reverberations, and dark elliptical cycles of blackened electronics pock the stately progressions of cosmic superimposition's dronemusik foundation. yet, none of these elements shatter the spiraling atmosphere of the contemplative, occasionally melancholia album which parallels the spectral sounds of the hafler trio, organum, and christoph heemann.

the principle designer for irr. app. (ext.) is one m.s. waldron, who has toiled at his craft in the foothills of california for well over a decade and has produced a brilliant discography of sidereal collage and drone parataxis. recently, waldron has found himself in the grasp of nurse with wound as one of the auxiliary sound alchemists for steven stapleton's forays into live productions. he has also worked with the icelandic electro-absurdists stilluppsteypa and the damaged minstrels from fawn fables.

m.s. waldron, steven stapleton, sigtryggur berg sigmarsson, jim haynes, and r.k. faulhaber
the sleeping moustache cd

release date: may 2, 2006

let's begin with the introductions.

m.s. waldron may be best known for his work as irr. app. (ext.), an unwieldy moniker that begets uncanny, hallucinatory sound. steven stapleton is the genius behind nurse with wound, the consistently unpredictable project that scrambles musical obsessions for krautrock, surrealism, and avant-garde composition into a brash quest for expressionism through experimentation. sigtryggur berg sigmarsson hails from the icelandic electro-absurdist duo stilluppsteypa, which continues to investigate the finer points of drunken minimalism. jim haynes prefers to merely state that he rusts things. r.k. faulhaber is something of a mysterious figure, looming around mr. waldron's irr. app. (ext.) recordings and performances while keeping his own work a hermetic secret.

each with a peculiar understanding of the audio arts, these five artists came to the proverbial table and thought it a good idea to collaborate. given the predilection for the surreal and the sidereal that each of these five employ in their many audio and visual projects, those agendas oozed from the recordings that became known as the sleeping moustache.

an epiphany of controlled disorder, a convulsion of beauty, a cascade of thought from delirious minds, the sleeping moustache is an exquisite manifestation of sound poetry scattered into a tortuous collage mired in an oblique melancholy. magnetic tones extracted from the ether, mechanical sounds smeared into a lugubrious growls, horns trumpeting straight out of john's book of revelation, ululations sliced into information overload that schwitters himself would be proud of. the sleeping moustache presents a psychically instable landscape, where dreams and nightmares wreak havoc upon the drudgery of daily life. the closest audible territory for the sleeping moustache might be the psychoactive constructions of nurse with wound's homotopy to marie, although the characters in this drama happened upon an entirely different map of that terrain.

the artwork for the first edition of the sleeping moustache features five letterpress prints from each of the artists with an edition of 1700.

  • witcyst - magic moments (4:58)
  • nautical almanac - live at gravy jelly (5:36)
this is the earliest ish i have at the mo... for a long time the only place to hear mimaroglu (remember folks, the “g” is silent) on cd (this was before that frankly horrible disc of his recent work on the southport label that i big-upped on the fe site... sorry about that folks). it’s a later piece but still pretty dam. interesting. plus you get the interview by scott foust of idea fire company / swill radio, which is one of two i’ve ever seen.

great issue all around actually, with music/words on/by solid eye, universal indians (pre-wolf eyes group), nautical almanac, challenge (anthony braxton / david rosenboom / willy winant trio), idea fire company, irr.app.(ext.), and many others...
tedium house publications press release...
since 1986, a time some of your favorite writers were busy discussing the genius of gov't issue and debating the merits of early gang green (although today they'll have you believe silent cds with a single electronic chirp at 35:25 are essential listening), bananafish magazine has been devoted to undermining the dreams and aspirations of fun-killing explainers, rimless bifocal'd complainers, and horrid gothic sourpusses otherwise known as "the experimental music community." as usual, the magazine comes with a full-length cd containing exclusive music and sound contributed by the featured artists.

interviewed in this issue:

japanese droneur diesel guitar;
electronic post-pioneer and composer ilhan mimaroglu;
french publishers of silkscreened books le dernier cri;
homemade electronic noise duo nautical almanac;
los angeles free music kingpins solid eye;
lovers of prince and improv sound collage universal indians;
lovers of fantasy and free electronics angst hase pfeffer nase;
and the hardest working percussionist in new music william winant.

electronic deep theorist irr. app. (ext.), former scissor girl a.z., and new zealand solo freak witcyst each contribute several pages of dante-esque words and bosch-like images. last but not least, new zealand filmmaker, animator, electricity demon nigel bunn gives barbara manning a guided tour of his gadgetry wonderland.
