| | | eventuell (germany) #evtl 04 ep institut für feinmotorik “original b/w fälschung” seven inch single record | i’ve long been a fan of this german all-turntable/no-record ensemble, which at any point can feature between 1 and 4 people performing rhythmic/lock-groove extrapolations on 2 to 8 record players. their set at the uh-fest in budapest this past march was certainly one of the highlights for me... flash back to late 2004; here’s their most recent recording, a 7” on wolfgang “tonschacht” brauneis’ eventuell imprint containing two finely honed examples of their craft...
original - a rhythm is made by feeding a lock-groove click through a resonant/high-feedback delay... layer sand systems are built over the top in a co-ordinated fashion, yielding a dense bricolage of turntable-sourced noises in a rhythmic grid.
falschüng - the same sound-set of original, with a sustaining bit of low-mid feedback occasionally interrupting the flow, plus a much more intricate percussive sensibility. from the title i’m assuming this was constructed digitally from the sounds in original
the grooves on the record itself swirl in at a logarithmic slope (the same effect as on those early brinkmann 12”s on ernst), the sleeve is a repro of an old cracked renaissance-era painting on both sides (or perhaps one of the sides is digitally processed ala the concept.) similar in production values to the tonschacht singles, albeit in color. very nice... |

7" evtl04 limited to 440 copies
first 7" by turntablism-quintet institut für feinmotorik from cologne/freiburg, well-known for their records on staubgold and fusetron.
in 2002 the eventuell-crew organized the first exhibition with the institut für feinmotorik at the exhibition space "kontor" (cologne) to document both - their music and their visual art. although purely done with prepared turnables, the tracks remind of the melancholic atmosphere of gamelan music, but at the same time both "original" and "fälschung" ("imitation") proof that this collective still marks the most playful and elaborate end of minimal techno.
the 7" comes in a stunning cover with a picture puzzle artwork, including ten "mistakes" to be found in the version on the backcover.
a highly entertaining piece of art and music.
limited edition of 440 copies. |
