fast forward is a composer and performer best known for his compositions for percussion, and music theatre works for diverse instrumentation. his compositions push the juxtapositions of structured rhythms and total chaos to their limit, delivering a sonically dense and theatrically gripping performance. same same is a collection of live recordings from three concerts which took place in new york city during the period 1990-1994.

julianna barwick / ikue morifrkwys vol. 6” long playing record

  • dream sequence
  • stalactite castle

  • rain and shine at the lotus pond
  • rejoinder
may 2011 release ; ... lovely set of site-specific music co-composed by ikue mori (on laptop, mixer) and julianna barwick (voice, electronics) at the recently re-invigorated white columns gallery (the site of the legendary june 1981noise fest”, which featured rudolph grey, ut, don king, rhys chatham, glenn branca, and sonic youth amongst others) ...

... comes in the de rigeurfolkways” -style wraparound sleeve, with a full-sized (8.5” x 11”)zine” with tons of photos of the installation & performance itself (which involved cutting the duo’s music live via a record-lathe) ... the music’s super-minimal, w/ ikue’s burbling electronic percussion & rain-drop filigree acting the perfect foil to julianna’s mellow incantations ... great record !!!

frkwys vol. 6: julianna barwick & ikue mori lpcat #: frkwys06 / wcr004

frkwys vol. 6 features four pieces composed and performed by artists julianna barwick and ikue mori as part of a month-long installation curated by rvng intl. at white columns gallery, new york, ny.

when rvng accepted an invitation by white columns director matthew higgs to display in the all-purpose project space, we envisioned a venue to host a frkwys collaboration. the non-profit gallery's long-standing support for experimental music dates back to the noise fest, a nine day event curated by thurston moore in june of 1981 that featured many prominent downtown new york musicians.

keeping the institution's regard for nyc avant music in mind, we looked to ikue mori, a member of no wave anti-stars dna and pioneer of drum machine and software improvisation, and julianna barwick, an artist recognized for the ethereal loop-based vocal compositions of her 2009 florine ep and 2011 the magic place lp, to forge the focal point on our opening night event.

for the installation, a particle-board cubicle was custom constructed and placed at the center of the project space. the cubicle wall separated julianna and ikue to their respective seated work stations, while web cams captured the musicians at work / play and became interactive projections manipulated by video artist erik mika, illuminating this exercise in simulated engagement.

each of julianna and ikue's improvised performances on october 29th, 2010, were cut live to vinyl via portable lathe. on the album's june 14th release date, the set of four unique lathe cuts and an elaborate art book will be made available for offers on igetrvng’s website. the book features creative direction by will work for good and photographs from the two events by aubrey mayer and jody rogac.

julianna and ikue met a second time three weeks later at white columns, november 16th, 2010. this time the two musicians collaborated without an audience, cubicle, web cams, or lathe, but with past experience and spirit in place, an exercise in actual engagement. the four pieces of frkwys vol. 6 include two performances from the first collaboration and two performances from the latter collaboration.

frkwys vol. 6 is a shared release with the sound of white columns. the lp is available in limited edition, packaged in thick black jackets with a two-color adhesive wrap. all lps come with a 24-page black & white zine; the book features creative direction by will work for good and photographs from the two events by aubrey mayer and jody rogac.

picture disc lp version, finally in stock !!!

right. so... “new york noise”, “new york no wave”, the “downtown ‘81” soundtrack, etc... ad-infinitum; these all exist solely because this, the original “no wave” comp, has been buried deep within the vaults of island records (antilles’ parent-corp), delgations on its reissue ultimately falling on deaf ears, red-tape ending up at the bottom of a well since... well, pretty much since someone had the idea of reissuing it on cd in the early 90s. there was a slightly moreso-than-this gray-area “reissue” on the “japanese” “off-note” “label” a few years back (which you were more than welcome to buy from other music for $39.99) - which is all well and good but...

...enter some brilliant soul (someone in the u.s. judging by the markings on the disc itself), wise enough to ape a perfect late 90s gorbushka-lineage russian bootleg (right on down to the liners in cyrillic!), did so... which means that fans of the whole art-school dropout meets max’s kansas city/mudd club/danceteria/cbgb’s thing can now derive their cues and fashion-sense directly from the source, instead of having all of that critical information (easily lost-in-translation) filtered through the sensibilities of u.k. “hipster 101” outlets such as soul jazz, etc...

putting aside what has become of the “no wave” legacy in the intervening years since its 1978 “year zero”, this still sounds like a gang of angry hornets just waiting for you to open your mouth; the firebrand is as warm as it’s ever been... even if you’re stick of the legions of clones, i urge you to witness the beast first-hand... this edition is not long for this world (for obvious reasons) so... don’t hesitate...
lilith press release...
one of the brightest and most famous projects of the entire punk/new wave scene, no new york was released in 1978 on island's sub-label antilles and became a total cult in the indie scene.

featuring some of the most incredible rule breaking bands of the underground new york art and music scene, the project--strongly pursued by brian eno--is a genuine snapshot of the massively creative nyc scene, from which innumerable trends started and became part of the modern pop music as we know it

influential, powerful and ground breaking, this collection features gotham city no-wave giants like james chance (contortions), arto lindsay and ikue mori (dna), lydia lunch (teenage jesus) and sumner crane (mars).

if you missed the original it's time to get your hands on this reissue.
